What a lovely theater. We saw THE WEDDING SINGER and it was a first rate production. Views are terrific from any seat and the staff is super friendly and polite. Seats are also comfortable. They have a nice bar and snack area and clean restrooms. It's located right on MAIN STREET so you have many options for lunch or dinner nearby. They do offer valet parking which is nice. The area has lots of municipal parking but they can get full pretty fast so parking may be an issue if you don't use the valet. Definitely a great place and we are looking forward to going back again. read more

This is actually a decent theater to go to for local shows. I like the setup - appears any seat is a good view of the stage but will always recommend center :). They have a bar offering drinks and snacks - heads up...a water was $4 lol. The parking is crazy in that area but they do offer free valet parking which is nice. Simply wonderful. We saw a great show - Waitress. Broadway quality talent, Right in our own backyard!! And what is more exceptional, I purchased tickets months in advance, and due to a personal conflict - could not attend the Saturday afternoon show. So I called the theater - And they happily exchanged for tickets the next day!! My front row seats were phenomenal - just two seats over from my original seats!! The talent is amazing. Went to see Flashdance before it closed down The performance and sets were amazing This place is one of Long Islands Gold mines . The actors are frequently Broadway caliber . The theatre itself is beautiful and there is a bar and a concession . Unlike NYC theaters the seats are roomier with more space for your legs which is a big plus when you are tall ! Whitney One Moment In Time starring Chrystal Stark (A songbird) in absolute Bling. The girl has a range as her voice plays like an instrument. Sweet stories about Whitney Houston. I like how she incorporated Dion Warwick and Aretha Franklin. She only was accompanied by one instrumentalist on an Organ. And Oddly the full set for Come from Away finishing November 2 was in full view with no curtain. PS view from second floor ( mezz) was very good, and ladies room there was very nice. read more

All the shows they put on are very well done and we have seen a lot of them. What stands out about this theater is the staff. From the valets who are the 1st to greet you to the bartenders who are always happy and very quick with service to the ushers and all the other staff, they all just create an amazing environment for a great night out. I have to say that Jill went out of her way one night as my wife had a minor coughing fit so she left the theater as to not disturb the show. When she didn't come back in about 4 or 5 mins I came out looked at the ladies room and Jill immediately said I'll check on her for you as if she read my mind. Of course she was fine but for Jill to be so aware to all the guests needs like that to me is over the top impressive. Even though Jill is amazing, she truly represents how everyone at the theater care about their jobs and more importantly all of their guests. Like I said too this isn't for one night it's time after time whenever we go which is quite incredible. read more

Every single show that I have attended has been fantastic. such talented actors and a great venue. I recently took my grandchildren to see Madagascar. The show was amazing and the audience loved to"move ". My only negative comment were the snack choices at the concession stand. At 10am the offerings included candy, potato chips, chocolate covered pretzels. oh did I mention candy, candy and candy?. Luckily I was able to avoid a meltdown by the grandchildren because the choices were totally unacceptable. I hope the venue considers some other healthier snack options so early in the day. read more

Many actors that perform on Broadway are also performing at this particular theater so to be honest, with all the shows I've seen here, I never once felt like I wasn't on Broadway. Except for the price. Much less than NYC that's for sure. I love the traditional beautiful bar and theater look as well. Very comfortable. I wanna rock!!! Saw Rick of ages here last night. Word! It was totally awesome. The venue is convenient to everything. Lots of restaurants in the area. The staff was friendly and got us in and to our seats quickly. Stadium seating so every seat was a good seat. Intermission was quick so the bar was packed by the bartenders were working their tails off. I was driving so I only ordered two waters but left a tip anyway. Which he fought me on until I forceful walked away. Then when I went to buy some snacks the bartender must have noticed and ran over and tried to comp me for that which was only twizzlers but he didn't know that. So I dropped a 20 and ran off. They are all super nice there and deserved more that I could probably afford to give. The show was excellent. Great talent. And the crowed was really engaged. Saw the kids show Madagascar this morning. Something for all ages! No Broadway packed in seating ,well spaced and comfortable . The cast was top notch and professional. The response from the kids was spontaneous and enchanting. Enough inside adult jokes to elicit lots of laughs. A happy birthday wish to a four year old at the end was very nice his parents were glowing and he had a great big smile! Many of what I remember from the old theater remain ,the stained glass lights ,the wall murals , lobby and marquee are just as remembered from the mid sixties. Highly recommend for the kids shows and adult productions. read more

Not going to lie I was a little skeptical of going to local theater, but I was thoroughly impressed! I went to see Matilda with some friends. They had a great, talented cast and the whole production was very well done! Great dance numbers, expect up all singing, comedic scenes and even some improv during the intermission. It's located right on Main Street in Northport next to a large church which I believe is where they do the valet parking. Multiple workers available for valet which is great. We found a parking spot on the street because we were early, which was helpful because waiting for your car after the show would take a while. The lobby was small but they did have a bar serving up drinks which seemed very popular. We were using a friend's season tickets and had great seats in the second row of the upper section which was a perfect level for the stage. It's all stadium seating with a couple hundred seats. No seat is bad in the house because of that except maybe the first couple rows in the lower section because you are literally sitting below the stage and would be looking up the actors' nostrils most of the time so opt for the upper section if possible! The rows had okay leg room.. not too big, but not too tight either. There was plenty of booster seats available for children which I found great, especially for a show like Matilda which had a lot of children attending. I didn't see a handicapped section for wheelchairs, but I can't say for certain a section didn't exist somewhere. read more

A definite treasure in this area of northwest Suffolk, much like Huntington's Cinema Arts Centre. The theater itself is lovely and the view and sound are perfect. The bar is a cut above, and I love how they offer three cocktails that are themed to whatever show is playing, and you can sip them at your seat. This theatre holds a special place in my heart. Back in the day my wife & I would go on dates here when it was a .99 cent movie theatre. Then, my in laws would tag along with us and we'd make it our Friday night thing. When the movie theatre closed, we kind of forgot about Northport altogether. June 2006, they started the revitalization and wanted it to be a theatre again, just like when it opened in 1912. I have to say, the designers really captured the New York Broadway experience. The theatre seats about 700 and every seat has a nice view of the stage. I chose our seats directly in the middle of the performance. The seats were comfy for a 2 1/2 hour performance. The seats even have cup holders! What brought us tonight was seeing the performance, In The Heights. This play was Lin-Manuel Miranda first play, I love the fact that it's pre Hamilton prices. From the stage to the actors and the singing, this experience felt like I was on Broadway. When the John W. Engman Theater puts on a Broadway performance, its not going to be second rate. After seeing this wonderful performance today, it shows the theatre is committed to the arts. The lobby has a well stocked bar well as snacks for purchase. There is valet parking if you need but I'd rather park on the street. We just left the theatre, I had to rush how and write a review, still happy from our experience. John W. Engman Theater is named after Long Island hero Chief Warrant Officer John William Engeman, who was killed in Iraq May 2006. read more

I love supporting local theaters especially when they perform Broadway hits. I came here to see Kinky boots and wow I was blown away. The cast was amazing and the show was spectacular. The theater is really nice. You can valet park which is great because it can be a nightmare to find parking. Otherwise you can park near the water and walk to the theater. read more

I can now go to Broadway, without actually having to go to Broadway. This was my first trip to this theater and clearly will not be my last, especially since we bought a subscription for next season's show. The theater is 45 minutes form my house, by car and I do not have to deal with subways, trains, parking lots and traffic. They also have valet parking to make your life just a bit easier too We walked into the entrance and were immediately greeted with a smile and offer for help. The box office personnel were terrific answering questions (when do I pick up tickets, how early should I get here, and even, Can I get some quarters for the meter.) The overall décor of the waiting lobby was wonderful and included a very well stock bar with very nice folks manning it. The theater was restored with the original artwork on the walls and very comfortable seating, with ample leg room. It is obvious that during the remodeling project, they were concerned about their patron's comfort and it shows. (The seating to me is the MOST IMPORTATANT PART as if you're not going to be comfortable in your chair, everything else is meaningless.) Our site lines were perfect and the volume, quality of the music along with the properly wired performers was nothing short of perfect. We saw "Thoroughly Modern Mille." In a word... OUTSTANDING. The singing, and dancing was absolutely five star... The young lady who played Mille, Tessa Grady and Trevor Gradon played by Tim Rogan were amazing... They reminded me of Sutton Foster and Marc Kudisch, who I saw in these roles on Broadway. I could not believe that I was in Northport, not on West 48th. The quality of the entire cast was fantastic. I can go person by person, role by role, but at this point, you'll know what I am going to say. This group was 'out of site' incredible. As a long time theater goer and coming from a musical background, I may be overly critical of what I see and hear, not a problem here though. The musicians did an outstanding job on the score written by Jeanine Tesoro and lyrics by Dick Scanlan. There is so much great talent out there, and clearly, the John W. Engman theater knows how to put together the right people. So much so, that I really can't wait for our next performance. Make sure you patronize local theater, some of you will be surprised at what you see and hear, and you'll also be supporting the local arts. If we don't know one will. read more

Love this place!!! This is the second time I have seen a show at this theater and both have been amazing ! The ticket price is $75, which is great compared to what you pay for Broadway! And most of the actors and actresses have been on Broadway or have toured nationally ! They are elite ! They have free valet service since parking is a pain in Northport. They also have a coat check. They have a full bar available and during intermission they come around selling snacks for $2 each and waters for $3.... a steal, compared to Broadway prices! We didn't have an alcoholic beverage here, so I'm not sure of that price ! The theatre and bathrooms are clean - it's a decent size theatre! Saw a wonderful show , "The Buddy Holly Story" at this theater The seating is a little tight for walking to the pcenter off the aisle , but the stadium seating makes every seat have a great view! They have cocktails, beer and wine for sale plus snacks. I didn't see an elevator, so there would be limited seating for someone in a wheelchair. How wonderful to be able to see Broadway quality shows in a beautiful theater on the North Shore of Long Island. The quality of performers makes the shows fantastic. I've been a season ticket holder and each show met or exceeded my expectations. The decor of the theater is beautiful. The lobby and bar are very appealing and there is a piano player playing before the show. Drinks are pricey but the ambiance is wonderful. Once you enter the theater, the decor is beautifully refurbished, the seats are very comfortable with enough leg room and the sound system is excellent! All this and valet parking too. Patronize your local theater. The actors come from NYC as do the musicians and are fabulous! During the summer the theater is used by a children's theater group that is also wonderful! read more

Have to say this is one of the best, most stunning theaters on Long Island. Broadway caliber performances for a fraction of the cost of a Broadway show. And, I've been looking at Broadway talent for quite sometime. In fact, some Broadway actors have appeared on the Engeman stage. I seriously can't recommend this theatre enough. I appreciate the friendly, helpful staff also. Parking could be a hassle which is truly the only drawback; it's on a very busy main street. There is complimentary valet. However, only 3-5 people work the valet podium at a time, so it may be a while for your car. If it's warm weather, park at the marina and stroll down to the theatre. Otherwise plan to get there early; they have a beautiful, fully stocked bar. read more

Misleading Emails and Poor Customer Service This used to be one of my favorite venues. I was a season ticket holder. Decided not to sign up for this season. Then I got an email saying tickets were waiting for me for Grease on 7/7. Nowhere did it say the tickets were part of a season ticket package. I thought it was the free tickets I was supposed to get but never did. Imagine my surprise when I got to the theater and was told I could only have the tickets if I bought a season pass. Ended up buying two tickets for my kids. When I wrote to complain their response was that it was my responsibility to inform them I didn't want the tickets. Apparently not paying for them wasn't enough of a hint. Too bad that a theater that puts on such amazing shows has such lousy customer service. read more

The John W. Engeman Theater of Northport is what this town needed, a place for citizens from other towns to come and support the local economy. The theater is named after the brother of the current owner who was killed in Iraq, while on military duty, on May 14, 2006. (Read the entire theater history plus John's biography at the theater site). The theater has gone through major renovations and now is a place to have a great time before and after the show. A full bar service, named "The Green Room", opens an hour before showtime and stays open after the show with a piano player (a young kid who needs quite a bit of practice but fun to listen to in the background). Here is my suggestion to you: Come early and go to the bar!!! We really enjoyed the bar and talking to all the other patrons and bartenders. While having a glass of wine, I met the make-up artist for the stars of the movie "Rolling Stones" and the owner of the bus company that shuttles the actors from Manhattan to Northport on a daily basis. But be ready to shell out top dollars for a glass of wine... I am not lying to you when I tell you that a glass of red wine costs $17.00! Yeap... Amazingly enough, there is plenty of mixed drinks and beer menus on the tables, but the wine list is nowhere to be found... because maybe no one will buy a glass of wine knowing that they cost more than a bottle of wine! $34 plus tip for 2 glasses of wine... ridiculous! But they will have mix drinks named after characters of the show playing which cost between $8-9.00 and beer of tap or bottles cost between $5-9. Better go with the well-mixed drinks or a beer... However, the bartenders are super friendly! They are very chatty, nice and they let you do a little bit of wine tasting if you are undecided on which one to order. In addition, they fill your glass pretty high. But $17 for a glass... I can just buy a bottle for less! Since I am so cute, we stay after the show to have another glass and the bartender 'took care of that bill'.... she got a good tip! As for the theater, there is a great bar-seat service... a server comes around taking your drink orders and she will deliver them to your seat before showtime (you are welcome to bring your drinks with you inside the theater, glass and all) and this is the best part... you can pre-order the drinks for the intermission and the server will bring your drinks to your seat!!! Cool!!! They swipe your credit card, keep your tap open and keep ordering... As for the theater, it is very open, spacey, seats are very comfortable and amazingly, there is plenty of leg room too! Every seat has a glass holder and bottle water fountain available with glasses to take with you. The sound system is fab too and the decor, ambiance and atmosphere of the theater is high quality. The actors are all from the Broadway pool... the auditions are run in Manhattan and the actors are shuttled on a daily basis from the city to Northport. The acting, singing and production of the show is Broadway quality. If you stay after the show to have a 'night cap' as we did, you get to meet the actors, musicians and production team at the bar on their way to the bus to Manhattan. The only time I don't bring my camera and it is the time I needed it most! Darn... Most of the restaurants and bars in town now stay open after the show for anyone who is in the mood for a late night dinner and/or drinks. Valet parking available for the theater but there is plenty of parking, specially on the Municipal Parking Lot across the street and at the waterfront, which is my ideal parking spot; because then you can walk up to the theater via the nicely kept Main Street, looking at all the store front windows while enjoying the town's architecture. I highly recommend this theater for the high production quality, fab sound system, convenience, ambiance, Broadway acting quality, comfort and friendly staff. read more

I will never again go to Manhattan to see a show. We went with a gift certificate to our first show. We were hooked. We are now subscribers and see every show. I have never walked out of there dissatisfied. Beautiful and comfortable theatre, polite staff, and amazing performers. Often they have actors from Broadway working there. First time at this theater to see "Saturday Night Fever" and what a dynamic, high energy, entertaining show !! Got tickets on-line for Sat @ 3. Parking in Northport town on the week-end is challenging. We got lucky and got a spot by the water. We had 1:00 reservation for price fix lunch ($19) at Bistro 44 (highly recommend). The theater is down the block. I did see a parking lot across the street and up the hill, not sure how large a lot it is. There is also free valet parking for the theatre (not sure what time that starts or how long you have to wait after). I like to sit close when I go to Broadway shows so I got 2nd row for this theatre. However, that was a mistake, hence taking away 1 rating star. The stadium seating starts on row D. Row A is literally quite close to the stage so Rows A,B, C you have to look up. In part of this show, you are looking way up as there are stairs to an upper portion of the stage. So next time, I will get from Row D and behind. It is a small theatre which is nice and you can bring a drink to your seat. Seats were comfortable and more front leg room than at Broadway theatres. The actors, choreography, scenery, costumes all first rate. This show was thoroughly enjoyable and I highly recommend !! The music was great also, apparently there is an orchestra, although audience doesn't see them. read more
