Good diner on a highway (hwy 75) we were recommended for their biscuits & gravy, they were on point, corned beef hash (needed more corned beef) but with a couple of eggs was enough food. And also on point, western omelette, pancakes all good diner food and very good, too. Not large portions but enough for the price. Everything was $10 to $12 bucks for breakfast. What a GREAT diner! I stopped for dinner on a Tuesday around 6 pm and the place was packed. It was not that large, but there were a lot of people there. I was brought a menu and my drink order was taken right away. She took my order when she delivered my drink and after a short time my mail was served. This looked really good. The turkey was hand carved and very moist and tender. The mashed potatoes were good as well and everything was smothered in a wonderful gravy. I really thought that for the money, this would be a small portion of turkey and boy was I wrong... This place has GREAT value for the dollar. I've never been until today. (02/03/20) My husband has been several times and thought I would like it. He was absolutely correct! I ordered 1 hot cake (pancake) and I am SO glad I did. It was the size of the plate! I'll include a picture with this review. I put peanut butter and syrup on it...delicious. It was fluffy and warm. So good. I also got a side of sausage links. I loved them because they weren't spicy or mushy. Had a great little snap when you bit into it. Also got a small glass of OJ and the juice was great. No pulp and didn't taste like poo. Hubby got the #10 which was a lot of meat and hash browns. He scraped his plate clean. He also mentioned the coffee was good. And he drinks it black. Our waitress was a very nice older woman. She was kind, quick, didn't overly bother us, and was accommodating when I sat at the wrong booth. LoL Bathrooms are just for 1 at a time. Very clean. Started to get pretty busy around 9:15. Driving from Minnesota to Blair, NE, stop in Sioux City, IA, at Johnnie Mars Restaurant. It is a place where the locals for good home style cooking at very reasonable prices. Kim, our waitress, who's been with Johnnie's Mars since it opened 27 years ago, seem to know all the locals and had a dry sense of humor. I decided to have the Greek Salad with Gyros meat added. It was huge! I ate until I had just enough room for dessert and the leftovers filled the carry out box. I asked for some Tahini sauce and it was thick, creamy and delicious. My bride had the Teriyaki Steak with baked potato. The meal comes with soup, salad and steamed vegetables. A lot of food! SIL had the steak tips and baked potato. The soup they chose was a Hungarian goulash and very good The only complaint was the vegetables could been warmer and they served butter spread. For desert, we all had the apple crisp, which Kim told was the first time they'd had it in 27 years, with ice cream and was excellent. We were on our way down from Sioux Falls South Dakota when we wanted to catch some dinner. My wife found this place on a Google search and we decided to try it. There was hardly anybody there at first so I wondered how good of a place it was. It definitely did not disappoint! The speakers had some music going on, but this was definitely one of your old Mom and Pop places We were seated promptly and the waitress was very nice! My wife got the Tom Turkey dinner special, which had stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, dinner roll, side salad, and a cup of soup. She had the vegetable beef and said it was fantastic! I got the pork tenderloin. It was a good size had mashed potatoes and brown gravy. That also came with corn, dinner roll, side, salad, and a cup of soup. I had the chicken and rice and it was wonderful, also. And for all that food, the bill was less than $40. We live an hour and 20 minutes away, so if we were really hungry, we would definitely go back up there because it was a pleasant surprise!!! read more

There is a very homey atmosphere at this diner. There was no wait on a Saturday morning and we were seated immediately. The service was nice and quick. The omelettes are huge and it came with 2 slices of toast. If you like to order any other sides they are separate but at a reasonable price. The cheese and sausage omelette was yummy and very cheesy. The blueberry pancakes are really really yummy and huge! They were very buttery, rich, and they used fresh blueberries! The pancakes definitely tasted home made. Our family has been eating at Johnnie Mars for years. The food has always been good--a few misses here and there, but mostly good. Sadly, I feel this place is going downhill. Ate there tonight. I wanted the soup that was posted as the special, but they didn't have it. We ordered pancakes, chili cheese fries, and a hot turkey. Waitress asked if we wanted the fries as an appetizer to which we said yes. She comes back with our whole order and says the cook didn't read the ticket right and made everything together. Proceeds to give us the food. Chili cheese fries were soggy, congealed and had obviously been parked under a heat lamp for a long time. Calling BS on that story. Don't throw your cook under the bus by blaming him for your lack of attention. Pancakes were rubbery and tough. The most disappointing was the hot turkey. I have had this in the past and loved it. Tonight it was so salty, I couldn't eat it. We asked for boxes so as not to hurt their feelings and brought it home to throw away. Fantastic greasy spoon serving yummy greasy spoon fare. Had the blueberry pancakes, bacon, and home fries, which were delicious. Ordered coffee and was given a carafe full of it, which I was allowed to enjoy for about forty-five minutes after completing my meal without any pressure to pay up and get out. Name of the restaurant comes from a portmanteau of the two owners, John and Mary, and is not a reference to English guitar god Johnny Marr. As of the last weekend in July 2019, they will have been open for 32 years. That kind of longevity says something about their food and service. read more

I stop here sometimes. My parents frequent this location a lot, mostly on Sundays after Mass. This brunch restaurant has outstanding service, great high-quality food, and a nice and warm ambience for a casual restaurant. While my parents usually have breakfast, I often eat lunch, and my favorite from here is the chicken strip platter. Usually busy on weekends, especially during noon. My only issue is that the atrium where customers line up to wait to be seated is rather narrow, but otherwise courtesy is to allow space for people whom are leaving, too. I came in with high hopes, sadly they did not really deliver. They have biscuits and gravy but it is only served till 11. That is actually a good thing. So instead I got the blueberry hot cakes. At what point heading west do pancakes turn into hot cakes? I am not sure but I am sure that the waitress did not know what real maple syrup is. On a positive note the hot cakes were huge, now I see why they had the option for only 1. I also got a side of burnt bacon, which to be fair only 3 of the 4 pieces were burnt. My friend and I were having a rare Sunday breakfast together. I suggested Johnnie Mars; breakfast is always "homemade good" I told her. She ordered rye toast, it came burnt; very burnt. She told the waitress who informed us that it would be burnt again if remade. That's the way it comes out or you can have "raw". It was too burnt to eat so she settled for raw. In the meantime the waitress goes back to the kitchen and says "this lady says this is burnt" to which the cook says "that's the way it comes". Are you kidding?
