Johnnie Special #10
Jamin S.

While staying in Sioux City on our way west, we decided to hit up Johnnie Mars for breakfast. Food: we ordered two orders of the Johnnie Special, with eggs cooked differently. Both orders were correct and the food was good and plentiful. Service: we were seated quickly, water & coffee brought out quickly as well as the orders taken immediately after. Ambience: the place was packed, but not too noisy. I don't recall any music playing, but it definitely wasn't noisy

What a GREAT diner! I stopped for dinner on a Tuesday around 6 pm and the place was packed. It was not that large, but there were a lot of people there. I was brought a menu and my drink order was taken right away. She took my order when she delivered my drink and after a short time my mail was served. This looked really good. The turkey was hand carved and very moist and tender. The mashed potatoes were good as well and everything was smothered in a wonderful gravy. I really thought that for the money, this would be a small portion of turkey and boy was I wrong... This place has GREAT value for the dollar. The service was fast and efficient and overall, this was a wonderful dinner. I will definitely be back when I'm in town.

Just 1 hot cake! Huge and delicious!

I've never been until today. (02/03/20) My husband has been several times and thought I would like it. He was absolutely correct! I ordered 1 hot cake (pancake) and I am SO glad I did. It was the size of the plate! I'll include a picture with this review. I put peanut butter and syrup on it...delicious. It was fluffy and warm. So good. I also got a side of sausage links. I loved them because they weren't spicy or mushy. Had a great little snap when you bit into it. Also got a small glass of OJ and the juice was great. No pulp and didn't taste like poo. Hubby got the #10 which was a lot of meat and hash browns. He scraped his plate clean. He also mentioned the coffee was good. And he drinks it black. Our waitress was a very nice older woman. She was kind, quick, didn't overly bother us, and was accommodating when I sat at the wrong booth. LoL Bathrooms are just for 1 at a time. Very clean. Started to get pretty busy around 9:15. We got there about 8:45am. You pay at the counter. Private parking lot. Place is super cute. I wanna go back and try their homemade pies & cheesecakes!

Driving from Minnesota to Blair, NE, stop in Sioux City, IA, at Johnnie Mars Restaurant. It is a place where the locals for good home style cooking at very reasonable prices. Kim, our waitress, who's been with Johnnie's Mars since it opened 27 years ago, seem to know all the locals and had a dry sense of humor. I decided to have the Greek Salad with Gyros meat added. It was huge! I ate until I had just enough room for dessert and the leftovers filled the carry out box. I asked for some Tahini sauce and it was thick, creamy and delicious. My bride had the Teriyaki Steak with baked potato. The meal comes with soup, salad and steamed vegetables. A lot of food! SIL had the steak tips and baked potato. The soup they chose was a Hungarian goulash and very good The only complaint was the vegetables could been warmer and they served butter spread. For desert, we all had the apple crisp, which Kim told was the first time they'd had it in 27 years, with ice cream and was excellent. All and all, very enjoyable dining location and you shouldn't go away hubgry.

I ordered the Greek salad. I wouldn't recommend getting that here. The American food items looked ok. Kinda disappointed but ya can't win them all. Staff were quick and friendly.

There is a very homey atmosphere at this diner. There was no wait on a Saturday morning and we were seated immediately. The service was nice and quick. The omelettes are huge and it came with 2 slices of toast. If you like to order any other sides they are separate but at a reasonable price. The cheese and sausage omelette was yummy and very cheesy. The blueberry pancakes are really really yummy and huge! They were very buttery, rich, and they used fresh blueberries! The pancakes definitely tasted home made. I'd recommend trying this spot out!

I ordered a Gyro salad, and paid for extra meat. And added feta, and it end up being sliced which was different. All in all everything was pretty decent. It was a bit greasy as another Yelper pointed out. I wish they would have had a little bit more ingredients, like olives and onions and whatnot, that weren't an upcharge but it is what it is. I asked for extra dressing on the side, but didn't get it, BUT I didn't even need it. It was a perfect amount of dressing. The dressing and tzatziki sauce were a little different then What I'm used to, and what I've had all across the country, but it will still good. They actually read my notes and requests, and sent me with utensils and napkins, and omitted the pita bread via my request! Pretty good little spot. I would probably order from them again the next time I am in this region. ***DISCLAIMER*** This pure, uncut, honest review is federally protected under Federal Law by way of Bill #EO14149. March 2027 Sioux City, Iowa…read more Very nice interior. Large bar in the front center that seemed to be popular with guests. A few tables wrapped around the bar. We took a table in the back of the restaurant. Simple table with black cloth napkins. No candle , no flower, just a small salt and pepper set with a few menus. The menu offers a variety from expensive seafood and steaks to sandwiches. I chose the seafood Mac and cheese. My husband had the pork chop with sweet potatoes and a side of grilled cauliflower. The other couple ordered Mediterranean pasta with shrimp instead of chicken which came with a slice of focaccia bread. His wife had the chicken margherita sandwich which came with sweet potato waffle fries. My husband said the pork chop was dry and overcooked. My seafood pasta was served warm. It looked like it sat under the heat lamp while other food was prepared. Oddly enough, my meal did not come with any bread. But the other pasta dish had focaccia bread and even the kids meal that had mac & cheese had a big chunk of bread as well. Was it an oversight? Also missing from my dish was the Panko crumbs that were to top the dish. None to be found! My pasta had really great flavor. A complaint is that every third bite I was pulling a shell out of my mouth. It's good to know that the seafood is fresh, but I should not have to bite around the shell of the seafood. Also, because it was served warm, it made it less than enjoyable. The Mediterranean pasta I was told was delicious and it looked so. A lot of sauce as well. The chicken sandwich was quite large. Although it was tough and not tasty. It came with a side of sweet potato fries, which came out after we started our meal. It was forgotten the first time around. Overall, I would give the ambience an eight. Service was good and it deserves a seven. The food however, which I think is very important when you go to dinner, would get a solid five. I think the flavor was good, but again, because the food was served cold, and the pork chop was overcooked. I would most definitely take points off.

I have visited this restaurant on a regular basis since I wrote first review…read more Today? I went to get my usual take out and saw two boys working, whom i have never seen. I did ask where the usual gals were. Jessica, one of the boy's mothers came out. I ordered usual. I took it home. Bag with gyros in it was soaked with oil. I took the gyros out. Oil was saturated through two things of foil, dripping onto my floor, and my hands were saturated. I had to wipe them off with paper towels. I called to speak to Jessica, reported the situation. She just said she would tell them to use less oil. She did not seem to care. I tried to eat one, soggy, oil soaked, and not much in it, nothing like usual. For a price of 33$, one drink, two gyros, one fry, two deserts? Not worth it, Ambiance was the same, a few people and nothing special. Obviously these kids did not know what they were doing. I will NEVER return again, I threw both gyros away. Waste of money. I ate a few bites prior and feel sick. I would no longer recommend. They are searching for manager and assistant. I am very disappointed. No understanding, caring or empathy involved. Smh, money is tight. Ps: A few bites and two hours later sick, cramps and nauseated. Never again!!!!
