Unfortunately I would never recommend Dr. Mao as a surgeon to perform blepharoplasty. If you are considering blepharoplasty you should see an oculoplastic surgeon/surgeon board certified in Ophthalmology. Dr. Mao's oversight cost me $40,000 in surgical repair fees ($15,000 if done through a less experienced surgeon) from THE BEST surgeon in the country that corrects these issues (lower lid retraction and entropion). The repair surgery involves a graft from the roof of my mouth being used on the back of my eyelid. It's not guaranteed it will even work because the damage to my eye is so extensive. I had been living in horrible discomfort as my lower eye lashes have been turned into my eye. Dr. Mao wasn't able to recommend a protective contact lens to ease the pain. Another surgeon I consulted with recommended it. It was a lifesaver. Immediately following my first surgery with Dr. Mao, I can see the lower lid of my left eye is pulled down. Sadly, nobody caught it at followup appointments until I brought it up. I was consistently told by Amanda that I looked good. Dr Mao performed a second surgery 3 wks post op to correct it, unfortunately only made it worse. One time I woke up and my eye was bleeding in the middle of the night. It was terrifying. After a 3rd surgery with no improvement, I decided to seek a specialist. PLEASE do not have anyone other than an experienced oculoplastic surgeon perform surgery on your eyes. And never have implants inserted into your tear troughs - no oculoplastic surgeon would recommend them. Initially I felt that Amanda was helpful and compassionate but in hindsight I believe she was gaslighting me. She kept telling me I looked great despite specialists telling me I needed grafts to fix the retraction. I never had access to Dr. Mao post op - only Amanda or Arissa. Everything went through Amanda. Dr. Mao's office has not offered any financial assistance towards the specialist repair surgery despite the damage done to my eye. I don't want anyone else to endure this extremely traumatic & costly experience. From my perspective it's important to choose a surgeon to perform the surgery that knows how to correct it should something go wrong. read more

I have decided to write about my experience after seeing my surgeon's response to other patients where he blamed them for his mistakes. I had the worst experience and results possible with Dr Johnny Mao. I paid him almost $17,000 to ruined my face. I wanted a subtle lift to my lower face. He didn't listen to anything I wanted and instead did what he wanted which was to cut me to above my eyebrows. My face is a wide, distorted version of what it was before. I have terrible eye bags with ridges next to them, pixie ears, horrible scarring and am in pain daily from being pulled too aggressively. I'd do anything to go back. My experience with Dr. Johnny Mao was not a good one. I had lower eyelid and rhinoplasty surgery April 2022. I made it very clear I didn't want to change the shape of my eyes and I wanted a natural looking nose. I am Hispanic and wanted to look as natural as possible. Unfortunately, I didn't get what I asked for. I loved my eyes and now have two slightly different shapes, are more rounded, and have been shortened. When smiling, the muscle around my eyes goes inward so they appear hollow. I experience chemosis which Mao stated is normal, but I found out chemosis after blepharoplasty is very rare. I guess the one thing I am grateful is my lower eyelids aren't pulled down where I can't close them. MY NOSE HAS BEEN THE WORSE TO ACCEPT! I no longer have a columella, completed retracted, so my nose looks like it's been chopped off. Every incision made is noticeable. He also performed weir incisions (alarplasty). and scars go across my nostrils instead in the alar base. Some nerve damage because the numbness has not gone away. I have addressed my concerns to Mao from the very beginning. He told me he needed to overcorrect my nose due to the droopiness and thick skin. Both Mao and Amanda continued to say for months "it's normal", "you have a lot of swelling". "We know from experience it should come down." "Be patient". I have cried for days while alone and on phone with his asst Amanda. I completely isolated myself. I was wearing masks way after mandate was lifted because I had to work. Oct 2022 the depression was taking over my life! I begged Mao to do something. He stated he would do whatever I want. He said will go in, release the tongue and groove suture, and suture it a little lower but that I may go back to what my nose was prior to surgery. He also stated in an email, and I quote "Keep in mind that we do charge a small fee for sutures and instruments and time in procedure room, $250." I was really upset by this comment as why do I have to pay an additional fee for his mistake of over-correcting my nose? I was very confused as to what to do. In the end, I took the advice of a couple of surgeons I had spoken to, my husband and children, and I decided to wait the full 12-18 months before attempting a revision. I just still hoped it would come down as Mao stated it should. Jan 26, 2023, I went to see Mao and again I addressed my concerns and he was brushing me off. He made me feel like I was no longer important, a priority. I started to cry, and he looks at his cell phone and says I must take this. At this point I call my husband and I am inconsolable. Mao comes back to the room after 20 mins and says make another appointment and we will try to address some of your issues. I was devastated and felt defeated. Mar 22, 2023, he attempted to address scars with corticosteroid injections around the incisions to inhibit further scar formation. The injections hurt a lot and did nothing to improve my scars. At this same visit he agreed he didn't think my columella would come down much. His words were "It won't come down to your liking". I honestly was annoyed by this comment and told him, it would be to no-one's liking as who wants a nose that looks like it's been chopped off. He then went over how we would fix the retraction of my columella which gave me much concern as he mentioned removing even more tissue on the tip and that is something I don't want. After speaking with other surgeons, I decided it was best not to have Mao do a revision. It's hard to trust him when he didn't get it right the first time. I know all surgeries comes with risks but having this many issues seems absurd! So here I am 14 months post op. I am emotionally and mentally drain from this surgery. Nothing has changed but the swelling on my tip. I'm hoping to get a revision in the future but unfortunately, I must wait until I can save up again. Until then I will have to live feeling insecure. I had no idea that having this surgery would make me feel less pretty. I honestly wish I never had it done! read more

I'm a patient of Dr. Mao since 2017. So far, he's a very responsible doctor and takes pride in what he does. When I have any concerns, I talked to him and he has always been very kind and considerate to address the concern without charging me. I don't expect him to know what's going on if he's in the dark. I have to be pro active in letting him know. He's very accessible. I often felt that patients who has real concerns should consult the doctor rather than vent online to destroy the doctor's reputation. It's very irresponsible and unkind act when your ultimate action should be to consult the doctor himself to fix the issue. Venting here does not fix anything. read more

OMG I'm shocked at the negative reviews for Dr. Mao. I had a third rhinoplasty revision and upper blepharoplasty with amazing results. After being told by Other plastic surgeons that my nose was "impossible" to repair, Dr. Mao spent all the time needed to review my case and figure out how to correct the awful job that the previous surgeon botched. I had a full 2 years of post opp appointments - of which I kept religiously. My eyes look terrific and I accidentally pulled a stitch on the weekend and panicked..but Dr. Mao called me immediately and put everything to rest. Plastic surgery is a commitment on both ends and I have nothing but the utmost respect for Dr. Mao's commitment to his patients and his skills as a surgeon. If I can fall through the cracks for that long, that just shows me how much I actually mean to the practice as a patient. I also continuously see how on positive reviews, you did "computer imaging" with them. Funny enough, you never once did computer imaging with me, nor did you bring it up. So do only do it with certain patients or when requested? Or do you not do it at all, and those reviews are making that detail up? I am extremely impressed with Dr. Mao. I left my appointments with a "not rushed" feeling. He took the time to explain what was and wasn't possible as a revision rhinoplasty and septoplasty patient. Because I was so nervous initially, Dr. Mao even met with me twice to review my case so that I did not have false expectations. I'm so pleased with my results!! Dr. Mao is Triple Board Certified! You're not going to find another surgeon in this area who has the same qualifications. He works solely on the face and neck and he is, simply put, an artist! In addition, I found him to be kind with an excellent bedside manner. Each member of Dr. Mao's office staff goes out of their way to be pleasant, kind, and accommodating.
