I guess don't ever go here if it's within 30 minutes of the place closing :(. It should be pretty obvious to the workers when they are serving a halfway cold cheeseburger and mozzarella sticks that are BURNT and not edible. I hate to leave a bad review for a local business because I love to support local businesses but if this is the kind of service they are going to provide I will stick to chain burger joints. After seeing the reviews on this place, I was really excited to try it! Even word of mouth from friends compared this place to Unk's just a couple miles away (also in LS). I ordered the double steak burger with lettuce, tomato, and onion, along with a side of Susie Q curly fries. Sadly, this burger was mediocre and dry. There really wasn't that much flavor to make the patties stand out. In addition, the Susie Q curly fries had no seasoning or breading to set them apart. To tell you the truth, Arby's has better curly fries than Johnny Ray's. I actually poured Lawry's Seasoned Salt on the fries and shook them in a bag to season them myself. The meal filled me up, but it didn't satisfy me. For that reason, I won't be returning to this burger joint. read more

This burger place is a blast from the past. It's not fast because it's cooked to order. Be patient. It's so worth it. Ice cream shakes are real old fashioned. Italian steak good. Burgers good. While most restaurants measure their food by weight, Johnny Ray's can be judged by its half-life. For example, I can eat one of their single steakburgers and subsequently feel it resting in my stomach for the next two days. One of their chocolate malts will inform you it's inside of your body for about 10 hours, while a regular order of fries might raise your awareness for six hours. If you go hog-wild and order something outrageous like a double steakburger, fries, and a chocolate malt, your body will require nearly a month of downtime before you can visit again. Johnny Ray's is like an extreme version of Winstead's; much more flavor, character, and history. As I've inferred, their food is deep south greasy, which results in what I call the "food hangover effect." You're sitting around, ecstatically shoving dripping burger wads and fries into your mouth until you've consumed everything but the empty ketchup packet. Around five minutes later, when your stomach and brain suddenly get in sync, the parade of gut-bulging regret begins. You swear to never again eat at Johnny Ray's for as long as you live, and proclaim your life's greatest mistake was ordering their triple cheeseburger. If we are in Lee's Summit and want a Burger we generally head over to Johnny Ray's Drive In. My favorite burger at Johnny Ray's is the Double Steakburger with Cheese. It is about a three napkin sandwich (the minimum number of napkins needed to keep from wearing your food on your face and clothes). However, if you like them loaded up with all the fixings -- including lettuce, tomato, pickle chips, onion, mustard and ketchup -- you will easily need seven napkins, maybe more! That's the way Hubby and I like them! It may be kind of sloppy to eat but in my estimation Johnny Ray's is the best burger in Lee's Summit and it has been doing this for years and still has original ownership. It's a small place with only a few booths around the walls and the counter is a big U so the waitress can keep you supplied with shakes & malts, spicy fries, onion rings and refills on your fountain drink. There is a jukebox by the door. And if the place is full, there is a drive through. The menu has most of the fast food standard items you will find everywhere - they just do them very well. I know that lots of places serve Burgers but Johnny Ray's Drive-In does them the best in Lee's Summit. Maybe The Best of the Independently owned joints in the Kansas City area? read more

I grew up eating this at this place for my whole life and it still has the BEST burgers in the world as far as I am concerned! They have an aged grill that seasons the burgers just right, and oh my goodness, I could go on and on about how good they are! Then, there's the shakes and fries! OH so good! C'mon folks. It's not that good. The burger may be made from fresh meat but it's tasteless, fatty, squashed thin and burned on the grill. Frozen krinkle fries, frozen breaded onion rings; none of the sides are fresh. Vanilla soft serve with chocolate syrup is what they call a "chocolate shake". Some reviewers mention that it is crowded as if that reflected its popularity. It only has five booths and a dozen seats around the bar. Of course it gets crowded! You don't go here for a Michael Smith Rare Kobe burger with a side of wasabi yam fries, rather for a greasy, yummy, all-American steak burger and normal fries. As much as this pains me, I feel it necessary to write this review. I have lived in Lee's Summit for 5 years and have always been fairly satisfied with everything I have ever ordered from here so this evening my fiance and I decided to get a burger from Johnny's considering it's National Burger Day and I was super excited as we have been trying to watch our pennies with everything going on and my job is on hold until further notice, but I was going somewhere that I know I'll get the best for my money. Imagine my surprise when we pull up to the drive-thru and start to order and realize their hamburgers were EXTREMELY expensive. One of their burgers was priced at $17.95...a burger, yes, 17.95...needless to say, I didn't get my Johnny Ray's Burger, instead opted for a Hardee's burger which ended up being very tasty and both of us had complete meals for the price of one burger at Johnny Ray's. They've lost me forever as a customer. The fact they raise their prices that high when people are struggling says a lot.... read more

I love going there on the third Saturday of every month for the cruise nights. A couple hundred cars show up and the folks are great. Everyone walking around and visiting. It is good. Burgers aren't the tastiest I've had, but they're solid. They definitely are unique patted down pretty thin with the patties overhanging the bun or perhaps that just happened this once. (I've been twice, but the first time was a long time ago) Good malt and I had the Suzie Q fries which have the same color as normal fries. Do have a good deal of fried food and fries were a little greasy, but they're fries so I don't understand the comments about the grease. Has some character, but not like Town Topic in KC. read more

This place is horrible. First time I've been here. My burger was burned. All I tasted was burn in the former of a patty. The bacon was fatty. The onion rings weren't that great either. Needed to change the grease or something. The prices are way to expensive for the quality of food they serve. Not worth it at all.
