Winstead's used to be the local fast food chain with locations around the Kansas City area. It was, Still is, no burgers, shakes, fare. In an age where fast food restaurants have dozens of options once that still has a fairly small menu with a few hamburgers sandwiches and a couple of salads in the usual sides. Breakfast items are only available until late morning . Our service was terrific for a party of nine, helped by the fact that on a Friday night this location was not very busy in the dining room. One family with us had not had Winsteads before and was very happy with their home cooked burgers and sides. All of us were very satisfied. Short staffed, the sole server for the restaurant did a terrific job juggling several tables, including our party hours with a variety of child ages. read more

I haven't really been here before to tried their menu or inside, so this is a review based on the drive thru. From the outdated exterior and road to the menu, you can tell they need an upgrade. But the food was good however, they messed up on the order. We had a hamburger with everything and one did not. Which we didn't ordered. The star of the show were the limeades. So good! A diner that makes you feel like you jumped into 1950s as soon as you step inside. We went in the off part of the day and had several tables there. The one waitress I saw was on top of things and had waters too use super fast. We did have to wait awhile on straws, but she was actively working the other tables, so no big deal. We ordered and our food was delivered quick! I ordered the double cheeseburger and a side salad, while my girls got single cheeseburgers and fries/onion rings and of course, a chocolate shake. The prices for the burgers and shakes seemed like a good deal, but the fries and onion rings were overpriced in my opinion. I was there for lunch I would probably give this a higher rating however, I am not sure that there has been any interior updates since this place opened. The carpet showed heavy wear from years of use, most of the booths chairs had holes and were very out dated. Getting to the restaurant was also a bit hard to get to because you have to go through someone else's drive to get there. The staff was very friendly and checked up on my on a regular interval. Food was good with a through back to the old mom and pop style diner. There is a driver through that was constantly busy. The food was worth going back, interior is a bit off putting. read more

Truely, one of my favorite places to eat because it is affordable and such a vibe! The atmosphere is that of a 50s diner. My favorite thing on the menu is the cherry limeade because they add a scoop of lime sherbert to the top. The service at this location is great too, always super friendly and fast! OK, this review is for the milkshakes only. Chocolate was amazing and vanilla even more so. You could tell these were real milkshakes not fake stuff plus if you look at the price points for the small and medium, they're a pretty good deal compared to other places, I was afraid of the large because I've heard a huge. This is not quite the Winsteads we grew up with. Seems that the chain has declined over the years. I was underwhelmed by the fries, tots and cleanliness of the place. The service was a little slow and spotty. Put the burgers are still amazing, and that's why I keep coming back. Next time I'll probably just get a triple and no sides. Where have all the Winsteads gone? Not sure how many are left in KC but I do know they used to be everywhere. After eating here I can see why. The food is actually pretty good. especially their limeades. But the decor is like eating in a 1950s space diner for depressed people. Like if there was a restaurant in outer space and you were flying around in your spaceship and really didn't care where you ate because you just finished a long haul across the galaxy and you are on your 3rd marriage and your kids live on different planets and you just want the pain to end but you don't know what to do, so you think to yourself "Hey, maybe a hamburger, tots and shake will cheer me up." But it doesn't; because outer space isn't what you thought it would be. You are at this restaurant because in space no one can hear you crying into your vanilla shake. Was tempted to give this 4 stars instead of 5 for the atmosphere but you don't go here for atmosphere, you go here for the food mainly. If you're wanting to eat Winstead's, go here, it is so much better than the plaza location. I would suggest going during their happy hour which is 3-6 pm every day, as they have half price on all drinks and shakes/malts, can get a large shake (32 oz) for under $5, food here is also priced great and all tastes good too. Triple burger for under $7 is amazing in today's economy, food is also always really great and served hot as the service here is also really great. Atmosphere isn't anything to brag about, it's an 80+ year old establishment that has been handled poorly from the Haddad Restaurant Group, but their food is great nonetheless and same with the prices too. read more

Lacy crispy wonderful patties. This place has been open for 80 years and the decor is frozen in time. My grandpa used to come here 75 years ago and it's so unique being able to have a similar dining experience today. The burgers are awesome - highly recommend throwing on grilled onions. The cherry limeade is a must try it's nostalgic and absolutely delicious. It comes with a little scoop of a lime sorbet that you mix in and it's so so so good. read more

If you see a Freddy's and Winstead's across the street from each other ALWAYS choose Winstead's, especially if you can sit down for the full 70's diner experience. Usually people don't like "outdated" decor, but I hope they never switch it up. From the bar to the booth, all the way up to the lights this place definitely brings nostalgia for anyone 25+. First the limeade is freshly squeezed, it honestly doesn't get any better than that; BUT IT DOES because it comes with a scoop of lime sherbet. The tater tots are crispy and fried fresh. The burger tastes freshly smashed and cooked as well, but I can't verify like the limeade because it wasn't made in front of me. Just trusting my instincts here(: Everyday they have happy hour from 3-6 which is half off all drinks and shakes and we got here right at 3! An amazing homemade meal for 2 under $20 you really can't beat that nowadays. The service was also impeccable and her name was Joselyn! If there's one thing about me, it's that I am a Winstead's girlie for life. They have THE greatest milkshakes. If you're an icey, classic-style milkshake fan, Winstead's is the only place that really satisfies. None of that nasty creamy and thick stuff that tastes super fake and basically like pure preservatives-- no. These milkshakes are banging. It's actually insane. Chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, CHERRY?? BUTTERSOTCH??? are you kidding me. They are all so good. The food is great, greasy as fast food should be, but not overly so. The employees at the Roe location are always great too. Really excellent service from a hard working group of people. This is only one of two remaining locations in the world, and I will always drive out of my way for both of them. If they ever close I don't even know what I'm supposed to do with my life. Winstead's has been a KC classic for as long as I can remember. My grandparents used to bring me here for their famous steak burgers when I was a little girl. When visiting for my grandma's memorial, my husband and I needed a quick breakfast before a busy day ahead. Of course, he was scrolling through Yelp and came across a nearby Winstead's. Yes, please! It would bring back so many childhood memories. They serve your basic, diner breakfast for a CHEAP price. I feel like the prices haven't changed in years!! My ham, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwich was a little over $3. Really?! That is even cheaper than McDonald's. It was so yummy too, I almost wanted to order a second. My husband ordered their basic breakfast with 2 eggs, ham, hashbrowns, and 2 pancakes. LOADS of food for a little over $8. We left happy campers! The service was friendly and quick. We'll definitely be back on another visit! PSA: This is an old school diner, don't expect anything fancy (pretty sure the decor hasn't changed since the 80s), but do expect a yummy diner breakfast for a great price. read more

I recently tried Winsteads. I didn't hear about it from anyone I just happen to drive by it and went in and tried it. This is not a burger joint. These are steak burgers, very thin patties. The burger itself was good, however fries and the drink were not included, the are separate. A burger for $6.50 is actually about $12.50 to &15. If you like that sort of thing this is your place. For me I would prefer thicker, burgers bigger burgers and more bang for my buck. I probably won't go back simply because there are better options. read more

This place is very run down and service was terrible. I noticed how bad this place looked from the weeds outside to the dust and dirt inside. The windows are dirty, the window blinds are nasty and there are dead flies on the window sills. The flooring is carpet which has likely been in place for decades. No restaurant should have carpet anyway- gross. Most of the seats in the booths are torn and peeling apart. The employees are not concerned with service from my experience. The food was poorly prepared, not fresh tasting. It was not even close to its former glory. I used to love Winsteads but I have had my last meal there. This place is poorly managed at best but without a doubt on its way out of existence unless it makes immediate changes in every way this establishment operates. read more

We went here on our last day of visiting the KC area and our hotel was relatively close to this place and where I live there aren't really any more steak burger joints around. Saw this place has been around since 1940 and it did not disappoint! Love the old school diner style it has! Prices were pretty cheap compared to most places now even with inflation being a thorn in everyone's side. The burger I had was delicious and the grilled chicken was as well. The drinks were great as well. Had pretty good service it was pretty quick and efficient and our waitress was very nice and didn't mess anything up. There was only one waitress working and it was noticeable that she was overwhelmed during a lunch rush. She was very friendly but struggling to keep up with 10+ tables. I would happily give this place 4 stars if they cleaned it up. There was chocolate milkshake splatters on the walls, the blinds and booths were broken, and it was generally dated and not clean. While the food was yummy, the dining room dirt makes you wonder about the state of the kitchen. Prices are fair but portions are small. Everything is a la carte, so don't expect fries with your burger, you have to order them separate. read more

Ate at this location tonight. The food was what I expected (I've been a patron of various Winstead's since the 1960s), but the cleanliness and upkeep of the place was awful. The parking lot is rough; potholes and broken pavement. The overflow eating area was blocked off by a pile of chairs. Lights were burned out. The carpet was filthy. The men's bathroom was foul. That said, the service was okay (but, we were finishing our meal when our malt and limeade arrived), the waitress was polite and attentive, and the food was pretty much what it has been for decades. I mentioned eating there to some out of town guests we hosted at Xmas, but I would be embarrassed to take someone to this location. This place has deteriorated significantly under the Haddad Specialty Restaurant ownership and is an affront to the community that has patronized it for decades. I'm very reluctant to give a local place such a bad review but it's deserved. Haddad needs to invest in this location. read more
