I kept driving by the place after work but one after the gym I was really hungry. The sign says grass fed Beef Burgers, so I stopped by and ordered a Double patty burger, onion rings and cheese sticks. I was amazed how big, guicy and meaty this burger was! The owners are pretty disappointing. I have loved this place for 25 years. Many have loved it longer. For a drive through, the food is great and the burgers are top notch. The service? Oof. Return visit today for a drive thru and ordered the Classic Big Cheese Burger. It came with everything except pickles which, I requested to be added but unless they were chopped finely like the onions, I couldn't detect even one. I didn't realize the pickles were not there until I got it home and rewarmed. Great tasting anyway. First visit = wish I would have drove on to Steak n Shake as originally planned. I stopped through the drive thru for a quick lunch. I ordered my meal and repeated it several times to make sure she understood. When I got to my destination I opened my bag only to realize they got my order wrong. I like to hunt down the places that look like total dives from the outside because sometimes you can find the absolute best food there. This is not one of those places. Been here twice and regretted each time. First time I had the "Italian steak" and the second time the "spicy" chicken. Not sure I would be able to tell the two apart on a blind taste test. Don't waste your time, tastebuds or money here. Ordered two sandwiches, drink & tater tots. Before pulling out of the lot, we checked the bag & found only one burger and tots were in the bag. Turned around in the lot and went back to the drive through & explained at the speaker that one was missing. Was told to pull around to the window. When I arrived at the window, I handed the lady my receipt & then she said she would need my bag as well. So, I gave her the bag. After several minutes, another lady comes to the window and in an accusatory manner, informed me that my order was packed & watched by the owner via camera and that the owner witnessed 2 burgers put in the bag. I asked to speak to the owner at that time. Another lady came to the window with the owner on her cell phone telling me that two burgers were put in the bag & that she would be glad to call the police for me blocking the drive through. What?! I was not offered a replacement burger, or even a decent attitude from the employees and owner via phone. I handed them back everything that they had given me and drove off. Big Burger? The bun was considerably larger than the 2 premade sliders. The bacon was bland and not worth the upcharge. Everyone raves about their onion rings, they say if they are hot they are great and cold/lukewarm suck. We got just above room temperature. They got a second star because the burger was hot. The old lady running the drive through was short in dealing with her and had the attitude that she was doing us a favor for spending our money there. First time here. JR double cheese. Under five bucks. The burgers had a good crispy crust on meat like a good smash burger. Meat nicely seasoned. I always do the double for better meat to bread ratio and the junior was plenty big. Not sure on the ratings the lady was very nice when I asked what the "sauce" was that. Ones on burger because I do t like sweet pickle relish type sauce. Basically ketchup mustard mix. I added Mayo. Definitely will go again great value. Great taste read more

When she made a bee line for Big Burger when we were in the neighborhood, I was shocked. My friend also never eats lunch and this was lunchtime. I thought I had fallen into the Twilight Zone. My super skinny friend craved onion rings for lunch. : This place has a simple menu and that's just fine with me. I was not really hungry but thought I would try the food anyway. I am sucker for those mom-and-pop burger stands and this looked like it was just my kinda place. I ordered the onion rings and a cheeseburger. My friend ordered LARGE onion rings. I knew then this place had to be good. She gobbled her onion rings up in no time. I wanted to wait until they had cooled off. She kept imploring me to eat them as soon as possible. She insisted they did not taste as good when they were cool. I resisted and waited until we got to her house. Yum, yum, yum. My friend was wrong. They tasted just as good slightly cool then they would have warm. These were the best onion rings I had ever tasted. Cannot begin to tell you how crunchy and delicious these were. These were not your typical standard cookie cutter franchise breaded onion rings. I immediately saw what was driving my friend crazy about this food. My cheeseburger was divine. Fresh, handmade. It was absolutely luscious. It was everything a cheeseburger should be. The ingredients were fresh and nothing was pre-made. The second vice was prompt, friendly and professional. I will definitely go back again and again. What a wonderful gem of a restaurant. Do not be alarmed by the appearance of this place. Apparently, it has been in the neighborhood forever. It looks it, too. There is nothing modern, fancy, trendy or sparkly about this restaurant. Some of my favorite restaurants have been those whose outward appearance looked out of date. We received a gift certificate in July from my husband's employer and drove 1 1/2 hours to this place today--only to find out that it is drive through only! The dining room has been closed for two years and it is under new ownership! Their website does not say anything about it is drive thru only! I don't know why we were given gift certificates to a place so far away, especially since it is drive thru only! We can't rate this place because we did not even eat there. If your from Independence you have Hi-Boy, from KCK you have Paul's, Platte county you had LC's... well Big Burger is the equivalent for those of us that grew up in Clay county. Standard burgers grilled thin, tenderloins, Italian steaks and of course tater tots and onion rings. Plus a full range of ice cream treats. Not a place you would drive across town for, but the type of place that should be on more corners than the fast food corporate giants that congest the suburbs now. We were a little worried going in on why a place that's been around so long only has a "3" star rating. I read reviews and don't pay much attention to stars. First of all, not sure what more people are looking for in a burger place. I ordered the double cheeseburger with tots and thought they were both very good. Burgers were thinner patties which I like and there was plenty of cheese which I also like on a greasy burger. My wife and shared some onion rings and they were breaded crispy deliciousness. Lady that helped us at the counter was super nice and overly apologetic for not being at register right away but that was ok because we were studying the extensive offerings on the overhead menu. I saw their menu and was hoping for something good. A large selection for a small place. We ordered from GH delivery. Prices seemed a little high but I know how the market is right now. I had a double burger with tots and a soda. Everything was as expected, burger and fry kind of place. I had the sauce on the burger, which is a mix of mustard and ketchup (tasted like a little more ketchup than mustard). The burger had very little lettuce on it, but was "big". They are much like Sonic's burgers. My wife got a cherry shake, which was very good, and had real bits of cherry in it. Overall, it was good and something we would do again. read more

I have a feeling this is one of those "you have to have grown up here" type places, and I can respect that. I just didn't grow up here. Seeking the first generation burger nirvana that is Hayes, I took my life into my hands and journeyed up to the wild suburban north, only to find that Hayes was closed. Closed! I didn't think the place ever closed, but apparently they took a week off. Huh. I guess everybody needs a vacation. So, I pulled out my trusty phone and yelped for a burger place near me. I wasn't expecting much on a Sunday at 9:30pm, but lo and behold, the existence of Big Burger was revealed unto me by the burning bush of AMOLED and 3G. Hallelujah! In terms of burger history, Big Burger's product is what I'd call second generation: the large, thin patty style which probably originated around the 1940s and became emblematic of 1950s drive-in, as epitomized by local chain Hi-Boy. It's hard for me to say anything too bad about the place, having made just one visit--and that mere minutes before closing on a Sunday--but the fact is, their burger was the very definition of "meh". I usually expect this style of burger to be well-seasoned (in this case, "well-seasoned" is a euphemism for "liberal application of Lawry's seasoning salt") but I got no such love. It was, on measure, a very bland burger, with frozen off-the-truck fried sides. Worst of all, they upcharge for unseasoned curly fries! I can only assume that this is because the curly potato cutter machine in whatever huge processing plant makes them is so much more expensive to operate than the straight potato cutter machine. read more

We have been going to big burger on Vivian Road for over 35 years always get their ice cream cones no matter what we eat there but the last Couple of years we have been there and order their waffle cone it is getting smaller and smaller and smaller and smaller my ice cream barely came to the top of the cone yesterday and I gave the lady a funny look and she just shrugged her shoulders and I guess that'll be the last time we will ever go there for an ice cream cone . And besides that the waffle cone is over $3.50 and there's nothing inside the cone . I guess I don't know that Freddys has a Soft serve cone Culver's has soft serve crowns Sheridans has soft serve cones McDonald's has them there's plenty of other places to go but big burger and I will from now on read more

This is the best burger place north of the river. You get great quality food for the price. It's very affordable and everything is cooked when you order it so you actually get hot food. Another perfect example of a Kansas City 'hey-day' restaurant that you really have to grown up around to fully enjoy it. Upon entering, it would seem like any other fast food joint. A little dated, this place is DECKED with random Elvis memorabilia posters and, for some reason, Nascar stuff all over the walls. Plain tables and chairs were neatly organized in the small dining room and the girls working behind the counter seemed to be in pretty good spirits. I had the people who I was with (loyal customers for over 20 years) order for me because I wanted something that they knew was 'good'. I ended up getting an oversized, deep-fried steak thing on a bun...with nothing else. It was strange, but they assured it was good. It was, what I had assumed, strange to say the least.
