Had dinner at Roots Seasonal Cuisine and it was absolutely delicious! From the warm, welcoming decor to the amazing customer service, everything was wonderful. I had the Flat Iron Steak with chimichurri sauce, and it was so tender, flavorful, and cooked perfectly! But let me tell you about the baked potato topped with artichoke and spinach dip... OMG! Seriously, one of the best potatoes I've ever had! We also enjoyed the crab-stuffed salmon with asparagus, pork chop with sweet potato fries, and ahi tuna salad. Every dish was delicious and packed with flavor! And of course, we had to end the evening with the butterscotch cookie topped with toffee ice cream and a salted caramel drizzle. Absolutely heavenly! Service is really great, Ambiance is good. My wife and I love the vibe... here comes the but... the food, after giving the place a half dozen tries, just hasn't been good. I could describe every experience with this restaurant but I'll leave you with the previous few. And I know what you're thinking, if the food was so bad, why do you keep going back? Well, hope and optimism. Rooting for Roots! We want the local place to succeed, but we've come to the conclusion that what they really need in order to improve, is honest feedback. But part of me hopes that it changes nothing. And here's why... my wife and I love this place. But in a weird way... allow me to explain, imagine the place as a Saturday Night Live sketch where the staff, the menu and ambiance are unapologetically pretentious, but the food doesn't deliver on any level. It's pure entertainment. We have dinner and an inside joke. First of all, for the price, you naturally expect elevated dishes and excellent service. We both had a cocktail, a glass of wine with dinner, an appetizer, entrees, salad and desert. Around $250 with tip. Pricey, but reasonable if the place delivers. On one visit we had the duck, which was served undercooked and when we mentioned it to the waiter, she scoffed, "that's the way it's supposed to be served." So feeling duly chastised for our ignorance, we shut up and ate the duck. I don't know the organism involved, but my wife and I were up all night vying for access to the bathroom. Enough said. Things were dicey, but no trips to the hospital. Six months or so had passed and finally, last night we rolled the dice and tried Roots again. My wife said her dinner was fine. She had stuffed salmon, adequate, but not great. For me, It was between the steak and the pork belly. Now I had the steak before once and it was... well it was definitely a steak. I'm not going to say much about it except for this... if you like the taste of a good glass of water, order the steak. So having experienced the steak already, I ordered the pork belly, which is an extremely tasty and forgiving cut of meat in my experience. But somehow at Roots, they figured out how to prepare it poorly. Yikes! It was dry as a bone, but only in the places where it wasn't tough as shoe leather. It had to have sounded like a rock when it hit the plate. The naturally rich flavor was cooked completely out of it, and any surviving seasonings were successfully burned away during the cremation process. I was starving so I made a valiant effort at finishing it, but it took several glasses of water and an inordinate amount of chewing. My wife laughed at me the whole time. I offered her a bite but she demurred, quipping that it had been a long week and she simply didn't have the energy. It was served with a "slaw" that consisted primarily of a plain sliced onion and slices of flavorless apple devoid of seasoning or dressing. I honestly don't know how this dish made it out of the kitchen, let alone a chef's imagination. It has become a quest for my wife and me. Like the holy grail of dining experiences, only a few minutes from our home. Ever the optimists, we will just keep trying Roots again every six months or so and hope for better on each trip... or not. If you're looking for a unique dining experience, please try Roots. We want them to succeed so we can keep coming back and having these comically terrible experiences. If pretentious irony is your spirit animal, please try roots. And Roots, please keep trying. We will keep spending $250 bucks for "dinner" and a show. PS, to add to your experience, ask for a booth when you arrive for your reservation, they will look you up and down and politely say "no" as they walk you past 4 empty booths. Roots Seasonal Cuisine is one of my favorite spots in Lee's Summit, and my latest happy hour visit reminded me exactly why. I stopped in with my girlfriend Lisa, who loves this place so much they basically have a little corner reserved for her. She likes to work from there because the Wi-Fi is good, the vibe is comfortable, and the food is consistently amazing. We sat at the bar, had a couple glasses of wine, and Austin took great care of us. Lisa had the steak special, which was the ribeye, and I had the salmon. Both were really, really great. The salmon was cooked beautifully and the whole meal was exactly why I keep coming back. One small callout: there was a $3 difference between what the salmon was listed for on the menu and what I was charged. I let Austin know so they could catch it for future guests. It did not change my overall experience, but I appreciated being able to mention it. Brandon, one of the co-owners, is amazing. He came out and spoke with us, and that personal touch is part of what makes Roots feel special. You can tell they care about the food, the service, and the people who come in. Their happy hour is amazing, and their seasonal menu changes are superb. I love coming in and trying different things. The salmon tacos are delicious, the birria fries are a must, and I always look forward to seeing what new crostini they are featuring since those change every few months. Last fall, I read a very upbeat review of Roots in The Kansas City Star highlighting the two local chefs who came together to open the restaurant about four years ago. The concept immediately caught my attention -- a menu that rotates quarterly, with roughly one-third new dishes, one-third returning favorites, and one-third permanent staples. Since we were in Lee's Summit this evening, the three of us decided it was a good opportunity to try Roots for the first time. Our meal came to $178 before tip, and unfortunately our experience didn't quite match the expectations set by the press coverage and the many five-star reviews on Yelp. We started with two appetizers our server described as menu favorites: the Dirty Martini Mussels and the Chimichurri Potato Skins. Service was friendly, but timing was slower than expected -- it took nearly 25 minutes for the appetizers to arrive, and the dining room was only about a quarter full around 5:30 p.m. The mussels were an interesting interpretation. The broth leaned heavily toward olive flavors and carried a noticeable level of spice, which was quite different from the more delicate white wine and butter profile we typically associate with this dish. The grilled focaccia served alongside, however, was excellent and perfect for soaking up the broth. The chimichurri potato skins were generously topped with roasted chicken and cheddar cheese, though we were surprised to receive four skins for the $17 price point. They appeared baked rather than deep fried, giving them a softer texture than we expected. Entrées delivered mixed results. My daughter ordered the Monday fried chicken special -- a half bird offered at a $10 discount -- and it was a highlight of the evening. She noted the chicken arrived piping hot, with a distinct pickle-brine flavor and a nicely crisp crust. My wife's experience was less successful. Her $39, 8-ounce flat iron steak, ordered medium rare, arrived closer to rare. Since the steak was already sliced, we were surprised this wasn't caught before being served. She also mentioned the risotto carried a chimichurri flavor that felt unexpected alongside the steak. I ordered the 10-ounce grilled pork chop. While the portion size was generous, the dry rub and candied chili relish overpowered the natural flavor of the pork. That said, the sweet potato fries served with the dish were exceptional and one of the standouts of the meal. Roots clearly has an interesting culinary vision and loyal following, and I genuinely wish the restaurant continued success. Based on this visit, however, the experience wasn't quite strong enough for us to plan a return. read more

We stopped by for brunch, and I'm so glad we did. With our reservation, we were seated right away, and our server was friendly and attentive. There was live music in the bar area that we could hear from our dining area, and our waitress shared that it happens every Sunday. They even take requests, and she offered to pass along ours. Since it was Restaurant Week, we ordered from the special brunch menu, and the $20 price point was a great value. I started with a mimosa and the peanut butter filled doughnut holes. I wasn't sure about them when I ordered, but they were delicious, and I'd definitely get them again. My son had the cinnamon roll, which was loaded with icing and perfect for his taste buds. For our main dishes, I had the chili crisp omelette, and my son ordered the cowboy breakfast burrito. Both came with potatoes and were satisfying. I also ordered the creme brulee cheesecake to go. When our check came, there was a small mistake when my credit card was ran, but our waitress was very apologetic, fixed it promptly, and even gave us a coupon for a free dessert on a return visit, which will definitely come in handy. Impromptu Sunday Brunch with the Wifey, and our first time at Roots...glad we did it! Our waitress, Sarah, was Fantastic. Full of energy, information, attentive, and super-super nice, she was the perfect person for us to have on our first visit. I'm a coffee person, SUPER-important to me () and was happy that their coffee was on point...good flavor and strength. We got the deviled egg appetizer, which was Amazing, and our entrees were the Avocado toast and Bacon & Brie omelette (I added crab), with a salad. Everything was tasty, and satisfying. I'm new to Missouri from California! So this is right on par with the quality I enjoy back home. It was quite the treat. Reservations are somewhat advisable- I had none but they got us in after 15 mins. We were seated in bar area and asked if live music would be a bother. Of course not. Yet another element missed from my west coast life. We were seated with Mara who was a sweet as could be and happy to fully give us feedback on menu and specials. She was a bustling around as full server for area and bartending as well. I was really impressed to watch her dance around serving and bartending with such ease! Management she is a treasure to your business!! She was well in tune with my vibes and I trusted her to make a adult version of the zero cocktail. Which was a great secondary drink. First being the pretty pomegranate martini drink served tall glass style but definitely strong - martini style! Had the tuna Tataki sashimi style with a beautiful mango jalapeño salsa. Delicious! A cup of potato scallion soup and the special with steak noodles! Definitely curated with a great array of herbs and houses to make them unique and fun to enjoy. We split the walleye piccata with whipped potatoes! It was really good just needed and easily added a touch of lemon which I like for my piccata- zesty capers and butter sauce! The lore flavor the better. Unfortunately we had no room for desert but look forward to in future! The music and ambiance as well as pleasant attitudes of all staff made this an excellent visit! Dinner here is always good. Tonight, our server was Grace. She was lovely. She's the best server we've had at Roots in all our visits. We met friends for dinner as 2 of them turned 55 yesterday and my wife's birthday is in 2 days. I had the Duck Porchetta, which was lovely. My wife had the Shrimp Creole and she very much enjoyed it. I finished what she could not eat (mostly). It was really delicious! We also had the lobster deviled eggs appetizer. That's my go-to here as it's excellent! Everyone loved it. They have a nice wine selection and good bar. Grace forgot to bring the chili I ordered, but I didn't need it. We were all full. We will most certainly be back, as we live 8 minutes away and have been here several times. Our friends from KC and OP drove out and they all enjoyed Roots too. This place is so delicious, luxurious, and fresh. We came here for a work brunch, and I think every person was blown away by the menu items. It was almost hard to pick, because every dish looked delectable. The only problem with falling in love with a particular dish, is that the menu is always rotating and changing, as it is seasonal! Wow! This place is amazing! We were looking, specifically, for a restaurant in Lee's Summit and wanted someplace nice but not fancy, local and that we hadn't tried before. Roots Seasonal Cuisine fit the bill and got great reviews. We went in the middle of the afternoon so it wasn't super busy which was perfect for us as we had a couple of people with diminished hearing. The dining room is comfortable and the service is very attentive and helpful. The food is the star here, though! We had the goat cheese fritters and Philly potato skins for appetizers. The fritters were unique, full of yummy cheese and complimented perfectly with their pear rosemary chutney (Yum!). The potato skins were perfectly crispy and tender and with only four to a plate there were not too many for us. The side salads are quite sizable and very fresh with lots of toppings. Two of us got the butternut squash soup which was wonderful. We got several different entrees: shrimp po'boy wrap with dirty rice (full of shrimp and andouille sausage; rice was very flavorful); chicken & Brie sandwich (also included the yummy pear rosemary chutney on wonderful bread - seasoned fries looked great!), Gourmet Grill sandwich (fancy grilled cheese) and hangar steak and coconut fried lobster tail with a twice baked potato (steak was perfectly cooked, lobster was unique and very good and potato was loaded). Our entire visit was comfortable and not rushed at all and I don't feel like it would be any different if we had come at ,inch or dinner times. Dinner tonight was at Roots Seasonal Cuisine. It is our first time dining here. Our reservation was at 6:30pm and we got seated right away when we arrived. The restaurant inside is modern with natural wood deco. We were waited on by Noah, who was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu when I asked for recommendations. He also mentioned that they change out their menu every quarter and add in seasonal menu. Tonight, I started off with a cup of soup while my friend had a house salad. For my entree, I went with the crab salmon with asparagus while my friend had the pork chops which was one that Noah had recommended. Both entrees was excellent. The pork chop was flavorful and the risotto was rich and filling. My salmon top with Parmesan crab served with asparagus was perfection. We ended the night with Lemon Raspberry layered cake. Large enough to share. Overall, we had a great dining experience. Noah was an exceptional waiter and provided a great dining experience. For that reason, I am giving them a 5-stars. We definitely want to come back and try their cocktails when they changed their menu in a week or so. They also have great space for outdoor seating. read more

Tried Roots during Restaurant Week and felt like their food could have been better-- 2/5 at most. Their crab dip was soupy, the side seasonal salad was forgettable, the pasta was nothing to write home about, and the s'mores dessert tasted very strongly of just cream cheese. To top it off, during our experience, the fire alarm went off from the start of our second course ALL the way until our last course. I understand that Roots had no control over the alarms, but I would have expected our meal to be taken care of when the alarm was so loud that some people had to leave in the middle of their meal. The tomato bisque was delicious, I could definitely taste the tomato cut it was not too acidic. The sandwich was amazingly creamy and delicious. We visited during restaurant week and enjoyed a late lunch. Even though it was 3:00 in the afternoon, the place was busy, but they had plenty of staff and everyone seemed to be well taken care of. It feels very much like a neighborhood spot with a lot of regulars. We tried the Roots Burger and the Dill Dijon Salmon Wrap. The portions were a good size for lunch and we both enjoyed our choices. We came for brunch today and the Grilled Banana Bread was a great starter and glad we got it as the kitchen was running behind a bit. We ordered our meals. I asked for salt and pepper and it seems, they were unable to find them for us. Another table had some but they couldn't find anymore.
