Some may call it a hole in the wall but I am so happy I stumbled upon this place. The menu offers so many different options from sandwiches, wraps, salads, burgers & even breakfast. I ordered the Vesuvius which consisted of an eggplant cutlet, a chicken cutlet, fresh mozzarella, tomato peppers, spinach and pesto mayonnaise. Had a good chicken parmigiana. Size was pretty big for the average price. Was served quickly and the server was warm. This location has good food but is in a low rent facility. Though it is in a warehouse section, it is close to the interstate (95) and close to downtown New Haven. French fries were average. Where else can I get a good hot sandwich and fries at 8 AM? While the ambience and the decor is minimal, the ingredients used in all of the food options are usually very fresh, unique and delicious. The variety of combinations on the sandwiches are clever, creative and mouthwatering. The owner likes to do things his way, and can be rather prickly to deal with regardless of the time of day or the quantity of people in the restaurant. The other workers are very accommodating, friendly, and make it a fun spot for a scrumptious lunch. There is outdoor seating and plenty of parking. Got the Gold Coast Sandwich, turkey, lettuce, tomato, pesto, and cheese I think. Pesto turned out to be pesto mayo - that should have been made clear. Pesto is pesto, does not contain mayo, so pretty much ruined the entire sandwich. Also this is a no frills sandwich shop. I was looking for prosciutto, not a sandwich shop sadly. read more

I've had both the sandwiches here as well as some of the "under the counter" offerings. Haven't had a bad sandwich here, and the dirty rice/spicy chicken combination has always been a winner. The owner can come off as a bit gruff, but that doesn't bother me in the least, he still seems like a good guy. I was hungry for a good Italian grinder and did a food search for Italian deli. Johnny's Salami popped up!! I admit that initially I went purely because of the creative name. When I found the Salami on the loading dock I knew it was going to be friggin amazing! I know that hard working men gravitate towards good food! And this place was busy with just that! I ordered the "Godfather" a grinder which was one of the best I've ever had! The meats were fresh, the amount on the sandwich was perfect, and the bread put it over the top! I simply cannot wait to try this place again! God bless them, and ALL the hard working people that keep this country running! As for the negative comments... I went into the deli with a very pregnant woman of darker complexion and we were treated with courtesy. We felt no uncomfortable feelings in any way. Finally had a chance to eat here. Let me tell you the food is tremendously good. This deli does a booming business. I tried the chicken cutlet classic. It was a huge chicken cutlet with lettuce tomato and a generous slice of American cheese. It came on a delicious seeded kaiser roll. It was fantastic. The chicken cutlet was so large it stuck out of the roll by 4 inches. They have daily specials and also do catering. I had a chance to talk to the owner whose name is Russell. He told me most of his customers get their food to go. The place is not big but the grinders are huge!!!. They have some indoor seating. I noticed that Johnnie Salami has won a few awards. If you ever get a chance, give this deli a play. You won't be disappointed. read more

A blue-collar sandwich place in the truest sense, located in a complex of loading docks, a no frills interior, but, most importantly, serving very good sandwiches. I've had only steak sandwiches from Johnny Salami's and I have not been disappointed. Quality ingredients are definitely used and the portion is generous but not ridiculous. Although only having ordered a steak sandwich, I watched the preparation of numerous other items and can say that everything looked excellent.
