Some may call it a hole in the wall but I am so happy I stumbled upon this place. The menu offers so many different options from sandwiches, wraps, salads, burgers & even breakfast. I ordered the Vesuvius which consisted of an eggplant cutlet, a chicken cutlet, fresh mozzarella, tomato peppers, spinach and pesto mayonnaise. I got this on a wrap but you can also get it on a sub, sandwich or on a salad. As a side I got the tortellini salad which is weighted by the pound, fresh and absolutely delicious! read more

Had a good chicken parmigiana. Size was pretty big for the average price. Was served quickly and the server was warm. This location has good food but is in a low rent facility. Though it is in a warehouse section, it is close to the interstate (95) and close to downtown New Haven. French fries were average. Where else can I get a good hot sandwich and fries at 8 AM? While the ambience and the decor is minimal, the ingredients used in all of the food options are usually very fresh, unique and delicious. The variety of combinations on the sandwiches are clever, creative and mouthwatering. The owner likes to do things his way, and can be rather prickly to deal with regardless of the time of day or the quantity of people in the restaurant. The other workers are very accommodating, friendly, and make it a fun spot for a scrumptious lunch. There is outdoor seating and plenty of parking. Got the Gold Coast Sandwich, turkey, lettuce, tomato, pesto, and cheese I think. Pesto turned out to be pesto mayo - that should have been made clear. Pesto is pesto, does not contain mayo, so pretty much ruined the entire sandwich. Also this is a no frills sandwich shop. I was looking for prosciutto, not a sandwich shop sadly. read more

I've had both the sandwiches here as well as some of the "under the counter" offerings. Haven't had a bad sandwich here, and the dirty rice/spicy chicken combination has always been a winner. The owner can come off as a bit gruff, but that doesn't bother me in the least, he still seems like a good guy. Only dings against the place is the size (small = crowded) and in the summer heat, the next door chicken business gives the area a, uh, "distinct" odor. I was hungry for a good Italian grinder and did a food search for Italian deli. Johnny's Salami popped up!! I admit that initially I went purely because of the creative name. When I found the Salami on the loading dock I knew it was going to be friggin amazing! I know that hard working men gravitate towards good food! And this place was busy with just that! I ordered the "Godfather" a grinder which was one of the best I've ever had! The meats were fresh, the amount on the sandwich was perfect, and the bread put it over the top! I simply cannot wait to try this place again! God bless them, and ALL the hard working people that keep this country running! As for the negative comments... I went into the deli with a very pregnant woman of darker complexion and we were treated with courtesy. We felt no uncomfortable feelings in any way. She ordered an opened faced bruschetta that was over the top delicious! The food is fresh and portions are generous. Our experience was GREAT! A no-frills kind of place in a completely non-descript location (New Haven Food Terminal), but they serve what are probably the best sandwiches in the city of New Haven. Great chicken cutlets. Unique specials (if they have the Sicilan Pork Sandwich that day, get it.) All served on excellent bread - which can make or break any sandwich. Highly recommend! read more

Finally had a chance to eat here. Let me tell you the food is tremendously good. This deli does a booming business. I tried the chicken cutlet classic. It was a huge chicken cutlet with lettuce tomato and a generous slice of American cheese. It came on a delicious seeded kaiser roll. It was fantastic. The chicken cutlet was so large it stuck out of the roll by 4 inches. They have daily specials and also do catering. I had a chance to talk to the owner whose name is Russell. He told me most of his customers get their food to go. The place is not big but the grinders are huge!!!. They have some indoor seating. I noticed that Johnnie Salami has won a few awards. Excellent tip on the Panini Angeli -- toasted/pannini'd perfectly on a super fresh roll -- flaky/crispy on the outside and tender, chewy, dense inside; lightly breaded eggplant and fresh mozz. One of our favorite places to go grab a sandwich. Great selection for hot or cold. Ask them and they will make it. Now it is in a very industrial park and looks less than inviting. OMG. I just cannot get over this man's eggplant. How does he make it so good? Try the Eggplant Angeli--Eggplant, Fresh Mozz, Roasted Pepper and balsamic dressing. Some people don't care for the owner's "sense of humor" BUT, who cares! The food is awesome! Huge menu, lots of specials and awesome Chicken Scarpiello! There is something for everyone from burgers to burritos, salads and homemade soups. White trash cheeseburger and the big fat fish sandwich are on the top of my list but you can go there and never get bored with the selections. Russel (Johnny) is a cool dude. He appears very gruff but is very friendly. He loves to bust chops but in a good way. Oh the sandwiches? Yes! Let's face it. It is located in a loading doc in New Haven. Like he is not going to have huge 1st class subs with the distributors he is located near? Prices are good and the satisfaction is great. A blue-collar sandwich place in the truest sense, located in a complex of loading docks, a no frills interior, but, most importantly, serving very good sandwiches. I've had only steak sandwiches from Johnny Salami's and I have not been disappointed. Quality ingredients are definitely used and the portion is generous but not ridiculous. Although only having ordered a steak sandwich, I watched the preparation of numerous other items and can say that everything looked excellent. On my next trip I'll have to try a burger because they appeared to be huge and looked excellent. I wish they were open on Saturdays. read more

Had an absolutely delicious turkey reuben and even tastier seafood chowder. This is place is great, very reasonably priced and has a large variety of sandwiches, salads and subs, not to mention the fact that you can customize your own if you prefer. And it's right in the center of Long Wharf New Haven. Staff is courteous as well. Highly recommend it. read more

Not a place you would run to looking at it from the outside, but take the risk. Daily specials are amazing, dirty rice is always a solid choice. Sandwiches are generously made. Always taste great and you're never left hungry. Staff also is very entertaining. read more

I have been a loyal customer to this establishment for over a decade now. The food is tremendous (Best deli in New haven, period) and Russ is quite possibly one of the most honest, entertaining and comical people I know. I think most come here to deal with a person who calls it like it is. If your feelings are fragile there is a Dunkin donuts around the corner, I think they have a designated safe space. read more

I've had two sandwiches from Meat and Co. on two separate visits in 2025. The first was the Haute Tuna Melt. The tuna salad itself was good. It has some hot pepper and chive flavor. The tuna sandwich was on a panini-pressed ciabatta roll. I prefer some type of grilled sliced bread, which I think is more common, for a tuna melt. But that's fine. The biggest miss for me was the cheese. The American Cheese was not at all melted. So it's really just a tuna fish sandwich with American Cheese, Lettuce and Tomato. Good for what it was, but it wasn't a Tuna Melt. The second was The Rick Reuben. It must be more "Rick" than "Reuben". because it is the least "Reuben" Reuben sandwich I've ever had. It had pastrami, which is acceptable for a Reuben. That was about it. Instead of kraut, they had a mild red cabbage slaw. Instead of Swiss, they had cheddar. Instead of grilled rye bread, it was on a long panini-pressed pretzel roll. Admittedly, I didn't pay careful attention to the menu description because Reubens usually fall into one of a small number of types, and I like them all. Although, the online menu I saw did not reference the pretzel roll. This sandwich was too far away from any accepted form of Reuben to be called a Reuben. If it had been called a Pretzel Pastrami Melt, which is far more accurate, I wouldn't have ordered it. It was fine for it was. The pastrami was average though. Food is good, but he lost a customer due to his consistent spouting of his homophobic, racist, and misogynistic views. One day when i was in there, he ranted about Mexicans and Spanish speaking people. Then, when people were speaking in Spanish in the shop, whistled over them. Another day, he ranted about gay people and prostitutes. It's his right to have whatever discriminatory beliefs he has, but it's my right to inform others about them and spend my money elsewhere. I ordered an "Italian Dream" (prosciutto, fresh mozzarella, roasted pepper, Stella table cheese) for myself and an "Italian Combo" (ham, salami, pepperoni, provolone) for my wife.
