Maize has a wonderful ambiance, especially on a cool winter evening where you can gaze out to the train tracks and snowy Westfield downtown. Though residing in a small former train station, it doesn't feel overly cramped, and the service was attentive enough to keep people moving. The meal itself felt a little over the top, with lots of flavors that didn't always meld well. We started with Nachos with Manchego Queso, which were not worth $18 even though the flavor was good. The order wasnt quite enough for two hungry people, though we also didn't opt for additional protein on top. We went with tacos for our main dish, and there we found the chicken to be the clear winner. The meat was hot, juicy, and complete with a hint of spice that brought the heat in all the right ways. Unfortunately, the brisket felt like the opposite experience, suffering from a sauce that had far too earthy of a flavor, which wasn't well-balanced with the cilantro that covered the meat. I needed to douse these ones in the spicy side sauce to make them palatable. Finally, we tried maize fries out of curiosity. I am no longer curious about corn fries - they were bland, with a texture and look of a French toast stick but with none of the satisfying taste. If I returned, I'd do it for drinks in the beautiful bar area. But when the drinks are done and it's time to eat, I'd recommend hitting the tracks.
Very good globally inspired Mexican restaurant. We were greeted by the host as soon as we entered. There is a large bar area with tv's. The cocktails were very unique and all were super delicious. The homemade chips with dipping sauces ranged from spicy to mild tomatillo. The crab tostada was very good, super crispy. The guacamole was spot on with plenty of chips. The empanada appetizer was stuffed full with plenty of shredded chicken.The coconut shrimp skewers weren't as coconutty as you would normally get but still grilled to perfection. The Tinga taco's were fully stuffed and not spicy despite having chipotle in them. The Guava BBQ brisket tacos, and grouper tacos were also very good. One critique would be that the tacos come with one shell each rather than 2. This makes them difficult to eat without using a fork and knife. The churros were amazing and all 3 dipping sauces were fantastic. Hint: If you've never had a Carajillo, get one! There's some parking available but it's mostly train station parking, there's also a municipal lot across the street and to the right. Overall well worth coming back to this restaurant.
Had a good first visit here! The staff was attentive and nice - our bartender recommended an entree from the seasonal menu while we were waiting for our table at the bar. Our dishes were cleared quickly after finishing up and they came around a few times checking on any drink top ups. There was a small mix-up from the kitchen on one of our dishes, the carrot tacos (not pictured) but, the servers apologized profusely and allowed us to keep the appetizer they cooked by mistake to try and compensate. The duck breast dish was a good call from the bartender as it was flavorful and tender. The risotto it came with was creamy and delicious. We also ordered a smattering of appetizers including a tasty guac and an order of Epazote esquites corn that ended up being my favorite. I wasn't as into the maize fries, as they were a bit too doughy for me and did not include enough sauce, in my opinion. The location is a bit unique, with the façade being the historic Westfield train station. Because of this you're close to the actual Westfield NJ Transit station, so close you can see some of the commuters as they are exiting trains, but there's very little noise or distraction when trains come and go. The inside is surprisingly cozy for being a medium-sized venue and beautifully decorated. Overall not a perfect visit, but I think if I return it'd be for the duck breast!
Maize has fun drinks and has a somewhat convenient location. Right next to the public parking lot and the train station. However, the food is overpriced and many of the dishes missed the mark for me. The chicken in the empanadas was very dry and I couldn't really taste the bacon. The croquettes were good which made up for the empanadas. Unfortunately, the chicken tacos had the same dry chicken as the empanadas. The sauce that came with the tacos made the dish. The roasted chicken was better than the chicken in the tacos and empanadas. By the time I got to the entree I was already disappointed. This place seems like a good spot for drinks but not so much for the food in my opinion.
Nestled right at the train station of Westfield. We came here for tacos and cocktails on a Tuesday night and we enjoyed our time here. I had the grouper and the chicken tinga. Both were good, but also on the smaller side per serving. We also had the side of elote which was a good portion and flavorful/ the corn kernels were toasted as well. Also had the tuna aguachile app which I think was my favorite dish for the night. It had a bite to it and it was a generous serving, easy for 2 to share. My friend had the Coca Cola Negroni which she enjoyed and I had the cubam cartel which was more sparkly and tart/sweet side. The corn ice cream dessert was good! I'd like to taste more of the corn but it did the job! We were seen on time, restrooms are clean and service was friendly. Dressy/casual, casual and relaxed atmosphere. Public parking. We stopped by for dinner on a rainy Saturday evening. Was running 15 mins late n informed restaurant . But when we got there we had to wait for another 30-45 mins. The girls in the front had no clue n were not bothered. Quaint rustic restaurant in the Westfield train station. Finding Parking can be a lil hard on a Saturday evening but we were lucky as someone was leaving. After 30-45 mins we were sat at our table w view of trains pulling in n out of station. We had the soup -hot honey kabocha pazale soup - w beans cabbage avocado chile crisped rice. It was different but delicious n hot for cold rainy night. Also had the classic guacamole which was good. For entrees we had the guava bbq beef brisket , crabmeat tostada n whole branzino adobo. The crab meat tostada was different n tasted v good w generous amount of lump crab meat , caramelized onion butter aioli pickled onions pepper n cucumber. Very refreshing, the guava bbq beef brisket was moist n flavorful. The branzino was different but tasted good w herbed salad, chimichurri aioli n poblano lime creama. We topped our meal w tres leche n sweet corn ice cream . They were ok. Thank u for a great meal. Gave 4* cos we had to wait to be seated for 30-45 mins w the front desk who didn't care . Sorry.
Beautiful restaurant inside a restored train station -- the setting is definitely the highlight. The staff was friendly, but service was slow for both food and drinks. The salsa trio was solid, but the guacamole could've been more flavorful. The eggplant rellenos was filling and seasoned well. Cocktails were also hit or miss; was happier with an off menu spicy mezcal margarita vs. the speciality cocktail options. Parking was easy and free on the weekend; not sure how it would be during the week.
Went for dinner on Tuesday with a friend. We enjoyed the ambiance of the old station and the service was prompt. Started off with the Drama Queen cocktail, which was the perfect amount of sweetness for me. The nachos with pulled pork were delicious, although expensive. We really came for the $6 mix and match tacos they offer on Tuesdays. I enjoyed the Guava BBQ taco the most! The meat was tender and flavorful. I definitely recommend going on Tuesday and taking advantage of the taco deal. Otherwise, expect an expensive dinner.
This is my second time at Maize, and it's a solid date spot. Good ambiance and the staff is friendly. Food is good too, but way overpriced unfortunately. My wife loved the duck and I loved the nachos. The empanadas were definitely not worth it and our cocktails were pretty mid as well. Service at the bar is also slow. Would recommend this spot if you haven't been, bur definitely not a spot I will be going to regularly due to the prices
We had a nice dinner at Maize in Westfield and it definitely delivered on flavor and atmosphere. We kicked things off with a couple of margaritas that were really well made, balanced, refreshing, and strong enough to start the night right. To start, we shared the ceviche and nachos, both excellent. The ceviche was fresh and bright, and the nachos were layered with flavor without being overloaded. For mains, my wife had the shrimp tacos, which were flavorful and well-portioned. I went with the beer tacos, which were good,maybe not mind blowing, but solid and satisfying. Overall, Maize is a pretty decent spot. Good vibes, tasty food, and great drinks. Worth checking out if you're in the area and in the mood for Mexican-inspired dishes with a fun twist.
I was really excited to try this place. I made reservations for 2 at 6 pm Parking was pretty easy to my surprise We were seated right away . Was surprised how packed the bar area was at 6pm. A lil chilly seating in the area around the windows - I would bring a sweater or something warm especially in the winter. Our waiter was friendly and attentive We tried the nachos with Manchego cheese and brisket and it was pretty good! We also tried another appetizer which I forgot the name bit it was Tuna tartare but spicy. Not bad but not my favorite . We also split a serving of Guava BBQ tacos which were yummy and a side of Brussel sprouts which I loved . After that we were full- no room for entrees or dessert The only thing disappointing was the cocktails . We did not love them at all. I tried a signature cocktail and then a standard one . If I ever came back to try other food options- I will opt to get a glass of wine
I'd been anxiously awaiting trying out Maize since I saw their Instagram before their opening. Worth the wait! Went for dinner on a Wednesday and it was consistently crowded (I made a reservation). Even prettier than the photos, they did an amazing job restoring the historic train station building. Started with the Drama Queen cocktail - refreshing blend of sweet lychee vodka and Smokey mezcal (my favorite!) shared a few items - the Nachos with Manchego Queso (added brisket) , octopus Al pastor, shrimp tacos. Everything was cooked well and seasoned and presented beautifully. But the real star was the brussel sprouts - the hot honey and salsa marinade made these an 11/10 - I could eat a bowl of these as my whole meal! A little pricey, but overall worth it. Will return to try their brunch!

I stopped into this restaurant for dinner and when I arrived I parked on the street nearby. I walked into a cute, busy restaurant! I was greeted and sat! I was served by Ders and he was great! I had: Furiosa Pula (La Pulga Mezcal) Skinny Tequila Flight (Lalo Blanco, G4 Reposado, Cascades Anejo) Crab Meat Tostado Bao Bun Pambazos (Hot Honey Chicken) Tamarind Glazed Duck Breast Tres Leches The food was really delicious! Everything we ordered was very tasty. Great atmosphere as well. Made reservations on the restaurant's site. Our server could've been more attentive & friendlier though. If you pay by credit card, be sure you check your credit card account a couple of days after, as one of the employees added $20 to our bill- even though we tipped more 20% in cash. They did refund me the $ when I alerted mgmt and attempted an explanation, but this is unacceptable & very concerning behavior. read more

The service has always been pretty good, a little slower when they are very busy. The drinks are overpriced considering they fill them with a lot of ice, not worth the cost. Food was very good, I have tried their tacos and an order of a side of rice. I would go back again for the food. They do get busy so I would recommend a reservation if you want a table, or sit at the bar if you don't have a reservation read more

Good drinks , need reservations but they intend to rush you when you're dinning in. Food are such small plates. My appetizer came out warm but main course side fries plus tacos were neutral not warm meat inside of the tacos. They need more vegetarian options. For the plate size pricing is a lot. read more
Inspired food and cocktails in a stunning space. We sat at the bar as all tables were already reserved. Great and attentive service. Loved trying cocktails from their custom list. Overall very good meal with a few misses but mostly very good and will go back again. We started with the Crabmeat Tostada which was very crispy with a generous portion of well seasoned crabmeat served with spicy, tangy tomato-based pearls they call valentina caviar. I recommend it. The Skirt steak & Maize fries entree was excellent. The steak was tender, cooked perfectly and well seasoned. The maize fries were unique and crispy. The Guava BBQ Beef Brisket taco were a disappointment. Unfortunately, not all the beef was tender, as there were some pieces of the shredded beef that was too dry. Also, the guava did not come through in the bbq sauce. It was a typical tangy sweet sauce, not exciting. The two soft mini totillas came with a spicy dipping sauce that was very good. The Bruleed Rice Pudding was also very interesting with strawberries and pumpkin seeds. The bruleed sugar on top added the sweetness and texture rice pudding needs. That one was a win. We also tried the Sweet Corn Ice Cream, which was unique. It is served with some blueberry compote which it does need. The ice cream was good, but needed to be slightly sweeter. I added some cracked bruleed sugar shards from the rice pudding on top of the ice cream and that elevated the sweetness they way I wanted. Next time I'll try the churros. A little pricy at $117 before tax and tip for 2 of us, but the service was good and they are clearly trying to serve thoughtful dishes that are enjoyable. read more
I really wanted to love this place as its hard to find good Mexican food in the area. I will give credit where credit is due, the server was attentive and kind which we appreciated. The main bar room has a stunning chandelier I wish we got to ate in there! The nachos were not bad, but they were not anything special. The concha sandwich made me think of my time in Mexico city bit I found the concha itself to be a bit too dry. Lastly, I didn't like the waffles. Even with syrup, they did not taste good. Inside was also big corn chunks, which wasn't very appealing to look at it. read more
The food was delicious. The service staff was very helpful and working really hard. The restaurant is nicely appointed, but can be a little noisy. The only downside for me is that keto options were limited if any all. Also, you can subtract from a dish, but there are no substitutions or additions. But, like I said, it was really good food. This review is a bit tough. I came on a Wednesday to celebrate my anniversary with friends and family. We had a 5pm resy and while parking we got a call at 5:05 asking if we are showing up. I let them know yes and was confused at the quick call. When I got to the hostess and she had our menus it was 5:09 and she let me know I needed to be done by 640. It was just an awkward start to the evening considering the immediate rush. I didn't think we would be extra long, but it was a celebratory dinner. Noted within my reservation, but regardless I felt the rush the entire meal. Now I will say we had friends show up late but we ordered fast and did the bare bones because we received very rushed energy from the server that turned everyone completely off. This could easily have been a huge dinner. We decided on ordering as little as possible because we just felt like they wanted us out to flip the table. Most of the food we enjoyed for the most part. We really couldn't explore it much. I will say we all enjoyed the Brussels and the ceviche was just ok. We didn't feel like it would be enjoyable to have dessert and left. Overall between the gruff service and the loud boomer music we left within just an hour. I personally don't think I'd return to spend money here due to the service specifically. read more

what a great addition to westfield! a beautiful train station turned into a restaurant. it is absoutly stunning with a huge bar and seating areas. So my buddy Seth, who works there, told me about this place and I just had to try it out. Very nice clean and fresh feeling atmosphere. We made reservations for high top but were seated in dining. The dining area was nice but we like high top bar vibes haha. Our hostess kindly moved us. Drinks: The Beth - haiken lychee vodka, union mezcal, soursop, hibiscus, lemon juice Hi-May-Ca - caravedo acholado, hibiscus syrup, banana, lime, egg white We liked the drinks but realized we really aren't into mezcal as much haha, which is ok! The Hi-may-ca was tasty, I do like me some pisco. The flavors were interesting with the banana. Appetizers: Octopus Al Pastor - pineapple puree, roasted plantains I COULD EAT THIS DISH OVER AND OVER (drooling). I hope this could be a keeper on the menu. The octopus was so soft, every bite was delightful. Black Garlic Aguachile Scallop Crudo - with sesame seed, pickled onion and corn husk charcoal First off, the scallops melted in our mouths. This dish was good but there was a seasoning on there that was a bit overpowering for us. Delicious! But maybe a little strong in that particular seasoning. Just needed something else to balance that out I feel. But overall delicious, amazing portion too so thank you! Sides: Brussel Sprouts - hot honey salsa macha queso fresco I NEED THIS IN MY LIFE EVERYDAY. Honestly, not much to say other than it's a MUST side. Tacos: Chorizo Spiced Shrimp - avocado, salsa criollo, crema So you get 2 tacos and two shrimps on each. They are nice plum shrimps though. Very enjoyable bites. I add the salsa on top which made each bite nice and spicy. Guava BBQ Brisket - curtido, aged manchego, tajin This is a very special taco. I took a bite and said out loud "wow." Mouthwatering, I didn't want that experience to end, to be honest. Whoever thought of the guava, perfection! Dessert: Now I told my friend if they have flan, I have to try it. However, I think our server said it was a chocolate flan? But I completely forgot about it the moment they said CORN ICE CREAM. Like what?! Yes, I have to try. It was served with blueberries and graham like crumble on top. I've never had anything like that and it was scrumptious indeed! Honestly, the ice cream alone without the blueberries was also just sooo good. Can I bring a tub home? Hahaha I think my only "negative" remarks would be our drinks seemed to take a while to get and all our food came out at once which was overwhelming but I am also not sure if that was something maybe we should have mentioned to bring one at a time? For a soft opening, it was beautiful, delightful. Everyone was super kind. They even pulled another empty high top table for us to put all our food haha, we felt bad but that was really thoughtful. We had a great time at Maize tonight. Made a reservation on Resy and the hostess took us in right away. We were greeted by our server Yohann who was very nice and informative. He explained a special sangria that's not on the menu and told us about several items we asked him about. We ended up ordering the nachos for an appetizer, the chipotle glazed salmon, and a special of chicken Milanese. Everything was very good and we didn't have anything left over to take home. The only negative thing I'd have to say is that it was quite obvious that there was a manager and I believe the owner floating around our area and no one table touched. The area we were sitting in wasn't even busy at the time. Being that they have only been open for like 2/3 weeks now you'd think that they'd want to make an impression. I was so excited to try this spot but I was very underwhelmed. Let me start by saying the cocktails were delicious! We had the Manhattan, Negroni, Old Fashioned, and Cornstar Martini and they were all great. Our waiter was attentive, though it felt like they were a bit understaffed and seemed to have 1 bartender making all drinks for the restaurant plus for the bar area. The guacamole was pretty good but I've made it just as good at home. I will say it was very onion heavy for a guac. The tacos came out cold and the meat (I got chicken, husband got brisket) was a bit dry. The guava bbq sauce and the tortillas were very good though. The Maize Fries were crispy and tasty and the best bite of the meal for me. I got the chocoflan for birthday dessert and it was a no. Both the flan and cake were heavy and dense and the cake tasted almost stale. It may be that it was kept too cold. The vibe in there is very nice but I was definitely a little surprised that we were sat at the very last table next to the bathroom and bussing area for a birthday dinner. It looks like all the 2 tops are on that side and we just got unlucky with that being the open table. Overall, I hope some of this is just new restaurant growing pains.
