My brother and I picked up a few pies for the family while visiting. This place is a hidden gem. My brother and I often complain we can't find a good pizza place like we had growing up in New York. This was it.. We had a margarita, a Sicilian and a half cheese/half pepperoni. Let's just say amongst the 8 of us there were no leftovers. I have stopped by Johnny's a couple of times and passed on the hour plus wait. This time I decided to place an order and take a walk. The place was crazy busy with pizza makers turning out square and round pizzas and another team making cheesesteaks a dozen at a time. After killing time, I watched them work and realized the square pizzas are the way to go when it comes to speed. I then grabbed a table in the back. Mistake. The upstairs is not clean and the restroom is awful. I headed out the door when my pizzas came up. The crusts were great..just a bit too much char..but the crust sauce and cheese offered great bites. By far the best cheesesteak I've had in years and possibly ever. Incredibly long wait- we waited 41 minutes for our food. Their flattop stove is way too small for the amount of volume they make. They get packed as soon as they open. Call and order ahead rather than ordering there and waiting if you're able. They open at 11 and weren't taking phone orders. Cheese steak- worth the wait. One of the best I've ever had. Great seasoning and flavor of the steak. Very cheesy Crunchy roll, doesn't get too soggy fast. Square pizza- was meh ok, not anything to rave about. Perfect marbleized cut after cut of that rib-eye will give you that great flavor with every bite. Now that I gave you somewhat of a visual of the quality type of meat to expect , lets go a little further. What makes a great sammy? Some say it's the ingredients and prep work. Others say its the establishment and traditions behind it. My friends it is all about that bread, the foundation behind it. That is where you start this masterpiece, and Johnny's has it my friends. Yes the tradition is important, and they follow it to the "T" but it starts with the choice of bread. Now onto that pizza that has me screaming obscenities', literally I'd smack a nun in the mouth for this. Obviously I'd put powdered sugar in my hand to give her that sweet blissful experience. I've heard about this place for about a year now, but made my way there a few times. From pizza to cheesesteaks, I've had it all and it's all worth it. It's a place I've brought plenty of co-workers and even my wife. On one occasion, we got there too late and they ran out of those amazing rolls from Merzbachers... So we got an amazing pizza instead. So good, done right. The cheesesteaks are among the best I've ever had and I'll say my favorite, because it's easier to get to than Philly. The roll helps to make it, but the key here is all of the ingredients. They are better ingredients than other places. We should all be fans of places that run out of food. You know you are getting quality when that happens. You can't just have amazing dough laying around. Who wants a roll from a few days ago? Better quality ingredients that take care. We got takeout from here a few weeks ago and wow were we impressed! The cheesesteak was hands down one of the best we've ever had. The portion sizes were huge. There are many pizza places in the Bryn Mawr area. This was our first time trying Johnny's. It's located on Lancaster Ave with metered street parking and a municipal lot nearby. They have Coke products. We planned to eat there. We ordered at the counter which overlooks the bustling kitchen area with several people making pizzas and cheesesteaks. There is a seating area in the back. By the time our order was ready, we decided to just take it home. We split a regular size cheesesteak with Cooper sharp cheese. The bread is outstanding- good crunch, not too thick or doughy, and sesame seeds. The meat to cheese ratio is excellent as is the filling to bun. We also tried the round white pizza (without carmelized onions). The crust is thin with a good crunch. They put sesame seeds on the pizza crust, too, which I really like. Both the cheesesteak and pizza were delicious. I highly recommend Johnny's. read more

Five star cheesesteak, three star pizza. I've read a ton of reviews for the grandma style pizzas here--I'm unsure exactly what the fuss is about. It was fine but there are so many good pizza places around, why pick the one you have to call 18 hours in advance? It's difficult to order from here. Most times they'll tell you they're booked solid or it's a 4 hour wait. I called at opening and had a very difficult time getting the person on the phone to understand me. Cost of a pizza + cheesesteak was $46. Best of luck to the business owner, I hope he succeeds, but I'll be going to Felicia's, Crust, and Pica's. read more

Stopped in on Saturday of Dad's day weekend right after opening time. Ordered a round pie with pepperoni. Also added a cheesesteak with Cooper sharp and onions. Now, onto the main event - the pizza! I opted for a round pepperoni , and it did not disappoint. The crust was perfectly thin and crispy, with just the right amount of char from the oven. The tomato sauce was rich and flavorful, topped with generous slices of fresh mozzarella and fragrant basil leaves. Each bite was a delightful combination of tangy tomato, creamy cheese, and herbal notes. Clearly the best pizza in Western 'burbs. The cheesesteak is similarly phenomenal. Loaded and tangy with that sharp American cheese and seeded roll. I don't eat as many cheesesteaks as I might have at another time, for comparison, but this is near the tippy top. read more

After lots of chatter on the Facebook groups about how good this place is, I finally found myself in the area and was able to try it. Called 10:45am on Sunday morning I got through right away and place an order for large square pepperoni and cheesesteak. It was kinda tough to hear over the phone as some loud punk rock playing but ultimately was able to get the order through. I arrived 25 minutes later and paid cash close to $40. Food met every expectation I had. Was delicious and along the lines of power players in the pizza industry: Crust (Havertown), Goats Beard, Pizza Jawn, L'Angola, and Pizzeria Beddia. Have not been back for pizza, but have had the cheesesteak on multiple occasions now and it is amazing! I get the 16", which is about $25 but will easily feed 2-3 people. The seeded roll is lightly toasted, the fried onions cooked perfectly, copper sharp, and a nice chop on enough fresh ribeye that it will have a nice heft when you pick it up. Service has been great every time, the counter and grill people are always quick and kind. Plenty of seating in the back if you want to eat in. I have to try the pizza again but the cheesesteak is so good I have trouble trying anything else. Only issue is the parking. You can sometimes get a lucky street spot or try the lot across the street by the tin lizard. read more

Pizza is delicious. The thin crust is rolled and tossed out just right. They have seating to sit in and eat but it's set up better for to go orders. The hot wings were fried crispy before being tossed in the sauce which made them really good. I wish they had more beverage options but the bottled root beer I had was tasty. The seating area is adorned with signatures and messages from patrons on the wall. It's a cute concept for the space. Cheese steak Guru's on Facebook have mentioned this spot on several occasions and took some of their (bloggers) advice. If you blink you drive right by and parking can be dicey! But it's worth the trip. Steak chopped but not mush, onions caramelized for nice sweet taste and mushrooms added a bit of earthiness. The cooper sharp just rounds out the flavor of the toasted roll and sesame seeds. 10 inch seeded roll, plenty of meat and it made the 35 minute trip home and was still warm and delicious. My pictures don't do the sandwich justice but it was spot on! Wish I lived closer. I have Gazzos, Gentili's and Pudges near by so I am content! Check them out for sure!! read more

They totally screwed up my order putting hot peppers on everything that I asked for on the side. Even when removing them, sandwich was too hot for the family of 4 kids. What I did ask for was onions. Where there any, nope! and when my wife asked for an extra bag because the french fries dripping with grease soaked through the bag. You would have thought I put a gun to his face! They kindly told me my square would be done in about an hour (on a Tuesday evening). Slid thru to pick up and it's your normal pizza spot. The cashiers were really nice and the price wasn't half bad. Wow. Forget the overhyped spots in the city, Johnny's is the place to go for all your cheesesteak and pizza needs. I was first introduced to their pizza through a pizza bracket party that I hosted, where Johnny's made it to the semifinals and probably could have won had it not been for crust pizza (Havertown), another heavy hitter. But the pizza was delicious, with a crisp, tasty crust and great sauce and ingredients, so I knew I had to go there and try more. I was feeling more cheesesteaky today, so went and followed reviewers' advice and got the cooper sharp cheese and fried onions, and when I say this was one of the best cheesesteaks I've had, I really mean it! The sesame roll is crisp and lightly toasted, thick but not too thick, and the meat is the perfect texture, thoroughly coated in their delicious cheese. At other places, I often add ketchup because their steaks are a little bland, but no ketchup was needed in this case--the flavors shined on their own! The quality of the cheesesteak and its individual ingredients was impressive. If I ever have friends visiting from out of town, I will recommend this place to them! None of those tourist traps. Service was friendly and pretty fast (I ordered in person right when they opened on a weekday). There's some seating and a smallish bathroom and crayon/marker all over the walls, and one old school fighting arcade game, so if you wanna sit and eat, you can, but you probably wouldn't go for the ambiance. I'm writing this review reluctantly, though as I wish the place success, social media has resulted in this hidden gem being "discovered." Don't even bother calling. They stop answering the phone an hour after opening. It's not that they don't deserve the attention. Both the pizza and the cheesesteaks are comparable to the legendary Angelo's of 9th street (which is cash only and has lines with hour-long waits .. and no seats. Johnny accepts credit cards, has seating, and can generally get a cheesesteak to you within 15 minutes (or 30 for a pizza.) He doesn't bake rolls in house, but uses the expensive (and worth it) rolls from artisan bakery Mayerbacher of Germantown. Sturdy, crusty and chewy, they are up there with the best of Sarcone's, but with their own flavor. Default American is Cooper Sharp, and a new hot-chili version (cheese sauce) has been added. Pizza is made in a couple of ovens, with the owner juggling pies between the screaming hot top one and the cooler bottom. 00 flour gives a superb char that LOOKS burned but tastes fantastic. Fresh Mozz, hand crushed plum tomatoes finished with freshly grated Pecorino and torn basil result in a pizza that would not be out of place in Naples. read more
