Lovely, dark wood interior which was very cosy on a rainy, raw afternoon. The service was welcoming and attentive. The food is very good. Having eaten here a few times since my student transferred to the university, I have to admit I am now addicted to the truffle kale Caesar salad, with a fried chicken thigh added. And the anchovies on very thoughtfully served on the side. We all really like the fried calamari but if you don't love garlic, beware. The garlic olive oil pepper topping is not for the weak. read more

First: service at the bar was gracious, engaging, and smart. We didn't have much time and the bartender helped us choose items that could come out of the kitchen in short order. They did. Second: the food was delicious and creative. Calamari was so good it ruined us for other versions. Pork dumplings made by hand: yes, please. Burrata was good if the accompaniments were utilized in proper proportions; the garlic balsamic jam was too much for me, adored by dining companion. We're in town for the NLF lacrosse tournament. I wasn't able to get reservations but thought we'd try anyway since it's only 2 of us. The hostess was really sweet and move around some other reservations to accommodate us. Our server was Shelby. She was very friendly. She brought us delicious crusty bread with an olive oil dip. There was a rowdy group of men at the bar. She was very apologetic and tried to get them to tone it down. We had spaghetti bolognese and sweet corn rigati. The pasta is homemade and really tender and delicious. There's a lively atmosphere with sports on TV in the bar. Parking is in a pay lot or on the street at meters. read more

It was Valentines Day weekend and the bf and I decided to be brave and try a new place on such an important holiday however Johnnys Tavern did not disappoint and we see ourselves going here again! The first thing I will say is that i was very grateful I thought to make reservations in advance, because the place was PACKED and there was a 40-45 minute wait without any reservation. We got in right away, and we both started with glasses of red wine. I found their wine list to be a bit expensive; both of our glasses ended up being around 12 each. I don't really see a reason for that: hence a star taken off. We deliberated between buffalo wings and meatballs for an app...surprise surprise wings won, and they were tasty! Nice and crispy, and piping hot. After the wings were taken away our waiter gave us house crusty bread with a spicy dipping oil that was very good. Both our dinners were delicious; however the bf won dinner with his braised short rib. I tried a bite, and it was right off the bone, so tender! I loved my steak. I asked for medium as I always do when I order steak, since I figure if they undercook it a bit I don't mind medium rare...and it definitely came out more medium rare than medium. The whipped blue cheese served with the dish was pungent and a delightful pair with the steak! We contemplated ordering dessert, but didn't see anything that interested us. However we had a very nice time and look forward when we can return and try some of their other meals! read more

Bottom line first: busy place with good food. Be prepared to wait. We made a dinner reservation for a party of 3. Was surprised that the wait was already an hour at 6:30 but went with it. Showed up on time at 7:30, but we still had to wait another 15 more minutes, and possibly more if I didn't let the hostess know we would be in a time crunch if we waited much longer. Once seated, we still had to flag down the waitress to get the orders in. However, she made good recommendations, and the food was pretty good. We started with the calamari and carbonara risotto, and the former was surprising with an Asian flare. We were satisfied with the hanger steak, frutti di mare, and braised beef pappardelle. Of the last, the pasta was al dente, and while the beef was braised well, it was slightly too sweet for me. Overall, a satisfying meal and got out on time. We didn't even know this place was started by an Asian owner until we saw the article on the wall as we exited. Bonus tip: plenty of public parking that has to be paid until 8pm, but some of the machines are twitchy. read more

Johnny's tries to be a fancy, upscale Italian restaurant with hints of nuveau cuisine. It succeeds somewhat. Johnny's is a worthy parents-visiting destination or date night with someone quite special; prices are nearly as upscale as the pretension. There is a very nice atmosphere, classy ambiance around the bar and nice vistas over a park-like setting from the big windows in the dining room. The rustic bread basket as a nice start - would it have been warm would have been nicer. Our waiter suggested we start with "very yummy" tomato soup and it was. My swordfish special was severely overcooked and this is New England - do seafood right or don't do it. I swallowed my tongue, but also two stars. Johnny's does something else right too: portion sizes. Just the right balance between ample (not to come off as cheap) and grossly too much, which we see most everyplace we dine. Congrats to the economists running the back of the house. Johnny's certainly is worth a revisit when next in town. Bring Mom and Dad, college kids. Or at least their credit card. read more

I have loved this place for years and it's sad to say my last visit today. Served a duck dish with half of it overcooked and dry and the other half totally raw. I asked our waitress {who was great!} And she had it cooked. We got the bill and there was no mention of the raw food or any comp. We walked right in when we showed up on time but line was out the door with folks waiting. My son got the tavern burgers with truffle Fries and loved it. My wife got the chicken pesto pasta and couldn't stop raving. I tried them all but nothing could touch the papadelle mussels which I couldn't stop eating. After a couple of iffy times going to Johnny's, we had some great food. Service was a bit slow to get us drinks but overall, we enjoyed our night. The food never disappoints. The dip they give you with the fresh bread is amazing. I think it's tomato, balsamic vinegar, olive oil and a lot of garlic! YUM! We started off with the baked Brie in puff pastry. Drool-worthy! They should leave out the crackers. The pastry is perfect enough. My husband had the New Bedford Sea Scallops for umpteeth time and this time it came with a green pea risotto. I suggested giving up the risotto for mashed potatoes but he wouldn't give in. The risotto was delicious. I was deciding between the special NY Striploin or the chicken tortilla salad. As it turned out, the striploin was sold out. My salad was wonderful!! I'm honestly happy the sirloin was sold out! Great job overall!! read more

The calamari were unevenly seasoned; one piece gave me a sensation of just salt in my mouth, another was too oily. I didn't finish them. My first bite of the smoked meat sandwich was a glob of fat. After that I carefully looked for a safe place to bite into but the heat/spice was so intense I didn't taste anything but the over-seasoned sauce that was on the bread. So I stopped eating.
