So this barbecue place was interesting to me. As soon as I opened up the box, you just got hit with the smack of smoke flavor more than any of the other ones. The ribs were different than the other ribs I had at the other places as well the smoke flavor hit you from the first bite, which was great. So I think these are my favorite ribs. I eat this week as far as the sides go. The baked beans reminded me of the baked beans I had as a child, the better, so I love the flavor of them if you don't know, but they were my favorite from the other places I went to. The coleslaw, the the regular one was the best law I had in town. The hot coleslaw which I've never had before and never seen was hands-down, my favorite I have never had a coleslaw like that in my life. I loved it and I love the heat. This is also my second time having Brunswick stew it was different than the first Brunswick stew I had were this was more of a stew. The other one was a little bit more of a soup. This one was awesome though I liked it. The only thing I didn't like was the pulled pork for two reasons. One it was already sauced I'm more of a dry pulled pork, 2. I like when you get the pieces of pulled pork that have the rub on it like bark I couldn't taste any of the rub, but it was still solid pulled pork just not my favorite the staff here was amazing though they hooked me up and I will be back next time. I'm from North Carolina where BBQ is everywhere. The feud between Western (red sauce) and Eastern (vinegar based sauce) is real and constant. I like both so I don't feud about it, I just eat it. This place just missed the mark all together on BBQ. The pork was oddly textured. The sauce was weakly flavored. It was piping hot though. I had fried okra to go along with it. The okra was VERY good. It was also piping hot and had to wait a moment for it to cool before I could eat it. Their pork and beans tasted like they came straight out of the can. It wasn't a bad experience, but I wouldn't order BBQ when I go back. I'll see if they do better with some of their other vittles. read more

Ive eaten here for many many years i love this place. Before they put the ramp in i would have to go into the back door and trough the kitchen to get to a table so i can confirm the food is fresh the kitchen is clean and its made there not pre packaged. And they are the only ones i have seen that knows how to make cole slaw. I have to keep my sodium down and all i have to do is request no added salt and they always listen. If you are wanting bbq then go somewhere else. It looked like the meat was out of a bag and was drowning in sauce to the point that it should have been soup. I make a living traveling the country and this is the worst bbq place I have ever been to. read more

The worse BBQ I have ever had. Personally I don't know how they stay in business. The baked beans were poured out of a can. The potato was terrible. The bbq sauce there was only one and it was poured out of a container into a big pump and it was runny . read more

In trying to come up with positive points a couple things come to mind. The interior design had a nice homey country atmosphere. The pie was obviously homemade and delicious. And the staff was very friendly and seemed to enjoy their jobs. Now the food portion of our experience. The barbecue chicken plate seemed like a fair price. After receiving the chicken plate it tasted very monotone and watery with slight vinegar and a hint of sweet. I love okra but it was fried way over what it should've been, some were very hollow on the inside and my baked beans tasted out of a can. I really wish they would've Spruced up the baked beans with some onions and chunks of bacon or some maple sausage. The barbecue pork wasn't really tender at all. And, it had a strange bitter flavor kind of like liquid smoke. It tasted like it was ordered pre-fabricated and not homemade. I wish they had different barbecue sauce, and hadn't put the sauce on it. And, while the barbecue sauce did taste homemade, I would've much rather of had some Sweet Baby Ray's. The macaroni and cheese was good, but it tasted like it was powdered cheese. And the mashed potatoes were good as well, but again I'm pretty sure they were instant. Overall, it was a subpar experience and I do not think we will be returning to John's barbecue in Dalton, GA. read more

Johns BBQ is a local treasure to the Dalton area. Four generations of my family have enjoyed their consistently delicious food. The serve sliced/chopped pork, chicken and beef BBQ along with nice selection sides. Hamburgers & Cheeseburgers are wonderful too. They also serve a great southern classic Hamburger steak. The pork sandwich w/hot slaw is the stuff of legend, I have yet to find its equal. Homemade chocolate, coconut and peanut butter pies are sublime. What's most appreciated is that the quality of food is great and it hasn't changed a bit since my Grandad used to bring me here 30yrs ago. read more

I can remember eating Johns Barbecue since I was a little kid. Now, I've had the privilege to eat barbecue from all over the country, but to me nothing compares to Johns pork sandwich with slaw, slathered in their house-made sauce. They have my all-time favorite bbq sauce -tangy yet not too sweet. Top it off with a slice (or two) of homemade peanut butter or coconut pie and you'll be good to go. read more

I can't say this was the worst barbecue I've ever had, because to put it straightforward and simple, this restaurant doesn't serve barbecue. Part of it is on me, I guess; there was no smell when I pulled into the parking lot, no wood pile, no visible pit or chimney. I was hungry and didn't want to drive all over town, though, so I decided to be optimistic, and hoped they had smoked earlier in the week, and their pit and woodpile just wasn't visible from the front. I should have trusted my instincts, but didn't, and I ordered the BBQ pork plate. I gave it the one star I did, because they were friendly, the service was quick, and the French fries were good. That's it for the plus side, though. The "BBQ pork" was just some slimy Crockpot-cooked pork that had been warmed over several times, and served with some sweet tastleless sauce. The "baked beans" were right out of a can, and definitely some cheap, generic store brand. 2 bites of pork and a bite of beans, and I was done with both of those, so I had French fries and iced tea for dinner. I can't speak for the rest of their fare, and the place was about half-full, but when I looked around, I noticed no one else was having "BBQ", so I guess the word has gotten around among the locals. This place SERIOUSLY needs to quit serving that stuff, take "barbecue" out of the name, and just call it "John's Restaurant" or "Johns Diner" or something.
