Johns used to be my go to spot for good soul food. I remember him working the grill in mornings and getting a friendly hello. The servers were all friendly and it had a warm vibe. After the renovations, I no longer get that warm welcome when I walk in. It's now just another place to eat. The menu is on the wall and next to it the items they don't have. A soul food place with no potato salad, mashed potatoes or baked chicken, and blackeyed peas, really??? I was embarrassed when I brought a friend. I told them about a great soul food place. Was very fond of restaurant until new mgmt and new remodeling. Evidently its now is no longer as welcoming. There is now a wall blocking the view for the food. I ordered 2 meals. After waiting and the food was taking a longer that usual. I and another customer was discussing the wait time. The manager became a little rude and told me if it wasn't coming fast enough I can get my money back. Appalled by her rudeness and a little embarrassed by her tone I asked for a refund. In leaving another customer said I'm going to have to start looking for another different restaurant this is awful. A few weeks later I decided to give it another go The quantity has definitely decreased. I ordered a dark and a white bake chicken and a 3 pc wing dinner to go. Upon arriving home the dark had a leg and thigh quarter. The white had a small chicken breast and no wing. The wings were extra small in the dinner. I couldn't believe this was John's. My mom found this place which is close by her job. We dropped in on a Tues after work to grab dinner. Soon as we got out the car I could smell the bbq so i immediately was like hmmmmmmm. The line wasnt to bad & we placed out orders. She selected ribs, mac n cheese, collard greens & yams. I opted for the catfish since its been a while since i had some. I got catfish stuffing (mom wanted that not me) & greens. For dessert we got cake; forgot what she picked but she said it was good & I picked some nana pudding it was a hefty portion and it was good so they get bonus points for that. I hate those lil snack size portions especially when its good. Now Im used to mixed greens w smoked turkey in em so they wasnt what I was used to but still good. The yams I can agree w another yelper didnt give home made it was missing something yet they were edible and the catfish was good. I did sample some of moms food and them ribs slaaaaapppppp the mac n cheese was good too. I wish we had ordered the food to stay but i know next time we go. We were told this was the place to go for southern cooking. It was incredible. We had fried chicken, country fried steak and chicken livers. It was all incredible. We also had Mac and cheese, green beans and cornbread stuffing. The Mac and cheese and corn bread stuffing were incredible. The green beans were good. We also had the banana pudding which was perfect. The restaurant is handicap accessible. We had someone with us who uses a rollator and he was able to move freely through out the restaurant. read more

I came here on Thursday around 6pm. I ordered the fried chicken plate with Mac and cheese and cabbage, and the baked chicken plate with greens and dressing. Both chicken plates were good but it was the end of the day for them and you could tell the food had been sitting out. The Mac and cheese was just ok. It's definitely homemade the black people way just wasn't flavorful enough to me. The cabbage was cool the greens were more like mustard/turnip greens with the small potatoes. Not a traditional with smoked meat, which is a nice options for those looking for no meat greens. The dressing was pretty good too, and I also think was meatless. Everything was lightly seasoned, not over salted but still had some flavor. It is cafeteria style like most takeout soul food restaurants. The food is already prepared and you choose from what's available. They do have some made to order options like the fried fish. There are a few tables to sit down and eat at and there was a nice mix of people sitting and taking food to go. It's a solid option for soul food on the Southside if you don't feel like going to riverdale. I'd try them again a little earlier in the day when the food is fresh. read more

We were shopping at Scott's Antique Market and one of the venders was eating lunch. It looked awesome. We asked where he got, it thinking it was in the building. But, he said it was up the street so we decided to take a mile ride to go to John's Fine Food. I'm so glad we did. It was the highlight of our day. My friend got the fried chicken livers, stuffing & gravy & cabbage. I got the veggie plate (4); mac & cheese, navy beans, green beans and collards. Cornbread came with each of our lunch. I tasted my friends chicken livers and they were the best we had ever eaten. I'm always cautious of going to places like this. I am a southerner, but please don't add sugar to my food and don't over salt. They did not and I was over the moon. I hope to bring my Mom. She would love it. On July 22, 2025 I was a patron of this restaurant. The new look is uninviting. The service line is unappealing in that you can't see the food before ordering. I ordered my usual -country fried steak with dressing, candied yams, and cabbages. The country fried steak was inedible. So I went to this restaurant yesterday ordered macaroni, bbq baked chicken and black eyed peas. So I noticed the macaroni was unseasoned with white stuff coming out. The bake chicken smelled old. So I went back to the restaurant to request a refund, the cashier laughed and stated thats why she doesn't eat there and no refunds. I was offered another side, I declined. also for a manager, but no one came out so I left. I actually forgot about this place. Many years ago I had taken my mom and dad here once and they loved it. They loved it so much they would drive over an hour just to come here to eat. My niece and I went on Saturday after I told her about it. She too loved it. The food is so good and homemade. The place was clean and the staff were super friendly. Potion size was great. Recently moved to the Atlanta area, and checking out the local spots in the area. Really love the restaurants that reminds me of those simple times back in my middle and high school days: Homecooked. The Ambiance is like the school cafeteria with the lunch lady serving, but without the attitude along with it being the south, the servers are good people. The menu is all old school soul food. Chicken, ribs, pork chops, stuffing, mac n cheese, greens, beans, potatoes, tomatoes. YOU NAME IT! Excellent food! We had baked chicken, fried chicken, smothered steak, ribs and ham. Peach cobbler and chocolate cake were delicious. Portions were large. Probably not the safest area but there were two police officers on duty so we felt safe. I was expecting a soul food restaurant where everything was fried but what i got was some of the best comfort food I've had in a while. The ambiance was not so much homey as it was "homie" but the cafeteria like service works for them, but I did enjoy myself with the very Thanksgiving like meal I picked out. I was disappointed in the corn bread it was just to plain for my tastes. You have to get the Red Velvet Cake it had some kind of cheese cake center layer it was really goog. Down home southern comfort food. Love their food. Cafeteria style service and line normally takes about 15-20 min to get through. Worth it.

First, the good news: During lunch hours, you get a free drink with your order, regardless if you take out or eat in. Also, they've got a very nice staff. Now the not so good: When you walk in you'll see that John's has had several ceiling issues, with huge water stains on the tiles, and after eating, i'd noticed in the corner that they scored a 78 rating, which isn't failing, but well, it's not stellar. On to the food. This is the typical meat and 2 sides country cooking place. I ordered the 4 veggie plate at just over $5 and took my free unsweetened tea. The greens and steamed cabbage were really good, however the green beans were mushy, and the side of dressing I ordered didn't taste completely done. Their meats included baked/fried chicken, meat balls and turkey/dressing from what I remember, so there is some variety, including the fact that they serve breakfast too. The food is good but the Manager\Owner is a moran. I ordered a Thanksgiving dinner, Turkey sliced, Spiral Ham, Dressing, mac and cheese plus extra gravy, I paid $182.15 on my debit card, so everything was paid in full, I get there early to get my order the staff asked me to sit at a table to go over everything. It was o.k. they checked off the items as they bring it to you, the lady that was helping me then says to the moran, wait he ordered slice turkey, the moran comes over and looks at my receipt and says you didn't order sliced, I'm not slicing it and we don't do slice anyway, I looked over and see other customers getting sliced pans of turkey. I paid extra to have it sliced, she looks at my receipt again adds everything up, turns out I was right, she runs outside to get a security guard he comes in and she says you better keep an eye on him, then walks away, the security guard says sir, is everything o.k? I visited, the restaurant the latter part of February 2022... I just admit I was disappointed after them not being open (because the buildings fire) for such a long time and to drive from Griffin, Ga to Forest Park,Ga because I thought I could get another great meal there, I was disappointed that they were serving canned collards and other vegetables. They'd seasoned them ok, but I didn't expect to drive that far for canned goods and to be charged as if it was real greens. I was pissed but, I believe in second chances and will give them a couple more weeks to realize we don't want canned goods.
