Beyond upset at how my boyfriends pants came out. We went in, asking for his 100% linen pants to be hemmed 3 inches. When we picked the pants up a few days later, a full polyester liner had been sewn into the pants.... Never did we request this, nor were we consulted if this is something we wanted done. I brought the pants back and requested the liner be removed and was told that they were not able to due to how the polyester liner was sewn in. Now a perfect pair of linen pants ruined and we had to buy a complete new pair of pants. Oh and not to mention that we were also charged for the unwanted polyester liner. 3 stars because although very disappointed in this situation, the work done was done well. read more

I came here for the first time a couple weeks ago after scouring through reviews for various tailoring locations in Boston, looking for the best tailor to hem a pair of unique 70's vintage flare jeans that were far too long for me. I've had uncomfortable experiences with pretty much every tailor I've ever been to, but the second I walked in, Ugur greeted me with such warmth that I instantly felt at ease. She is so patient and sweet! After putting on the jeans, I showed her how I was hoping it would be hemmed, and she told me that her opinion was that it should be much longer. She ended up pinning it there after showing me how it would look with and without my shoes. I was a bit skeptical, but I ended up taking her advice, and the finished product was even better than I could have anticipated! The cost was $20, and it took roughly a week to complete (she was very busy, and I told her this wasn't urgent). She even recreated the look of the original hem AND matched it perfectly with the embroidered rainbow stripe that zig-zagged across the jeans. Truly incredible. These jeans are now my absolute favorite bottoms in my closet. Earlier today, I just dropped off two new pairs of pants with Ugur. Immediately after walking in we chatted for a second and I was trying on my dresses to be hemmed. We went over how long I would like them and it took her all of 2 minutes to pin the dress as they should. She quoted the hemming (pretty good on the wallet!) and I mentioned I needed them in 2 weeks. Urgently needed tailoring of my bridesmaids dress which arrived too small, I could barely get in and out of it! Ugur was really great - she set clear expectations, was very kind throughout the process, explained what can/cannot be done, and then did an extraordinary job just in time! Went shopping in LA for a dress for Boston College Senior Ball. Found one at Bloomingdales but it was too big. The lady helping us gave me the number to order it online. After a very unsatisfactory experience where the dress went from back ordered to the order being cancelled AND Bloomingdales telling us it wasn't in any stores close to Chicago or Boston, my daughter visited a store near her school and found the dress. She's short and the dress was too long and the dance was in 5 days. My daughter found this place on Yelp. The seamstress not only got the dress ready in time, she did a fantastic job. To be honest, the dress was on sale and I spent about half it's cost to alter it BUT the dress was beautiful. About a year ago, I purchased a custom dress from an Etsy seller. I sent the designer my measurements and my money. A few weeks later, the dress arrived in great condition. Except, it didn't fit. This is where John's comes in. I don't know who John is, but the woman who altered my dress did great work on a somewhat complicated undertaking. Last week I took three dresses in for hemming. Today I picked up my garments and they look better than new. Nestled in a row of shops on Mt. Auburn, John's is easy to find. You get what you pay for. This place is cheaper than a store (Nordstrom & Bloomingdales), but slightly above other tailoring spots, however, I guarantee your work will end up EXACTLY as you want. She told me she was "very busy" and still had my stuff done within a week! I went to another tailor who didn't do a proper hem on any of the 7 items I took. I took my three favorite pants to John's Tailoring in hope of salvaging my pants. John isn't in the store, but his wife is. She treated me like family and did an INCREDIBLE job. I'm elated! Love this place! It's so cool that there are still dressmakers out there who will custom-tailor and repair your clothes for a reasonable price. I had a new zipper inserted in a down parka. At first the woman there told me it might be impossible due to the fabric allowance and the length of the zipper, but she said she'd see what she could do. She called me within a day and had located a zipper that would work. The (beautiful) finished product was less than she had estimated and absolutely fair. The original zipper had lasted one winter; her replacement has already gone two more. Highly recommended for alterations or repairs. She also clearly makes and sells ready-to-wear in the shop and some of it looks prety cute and very inexpensive. I love the window displays, too, which vary seasonally and are always fun to look at while waiting for the bus. read more

This place was ASTOUNDING! I had been taking my time trying to find a good tailor for a bridesmaid gown I needed alterations on. So I put a lot of time into researching all tailors in the area. In the end I went to John's because of the great Yelp reviews, and because it was right down the street from me. A little bit about the dress and the need for alterations... It was a beautiful Vera Wang cocktail dress that I planned on wearing again after my friends wedding. The thing was I bought the dress at a time when I had been very sick and dropped 30 pounds. Knowing I was getting better and gaining weight back, I bought the dress in a larger size (like 2 sizes bigger) in order to make sure that no matter what it would fit with only the need for adjustments before the wedding months down the way. I went in on a Thursday without an appointment and the brunette woman I worked with was quite pleasant and charming. Very positive attitude and you could tell she knew what she was doing. She was even very thorough when I said things I was hoping for adjustments on, and she was honest with why certain things would and would not work. She told me it would be a week for the alterations, which I was pleasantly surprised to hear. Then she told me it would only be $60!! $60 for adjusting the straps, and the fit of a two layered dress. Now I was really getting excited. Even more amazing... my head nearly exploded when I got a call just 3 days later saying my dress was ready. I have to say I was a little cautious at how fast they did the dress. However when I went in to try it on, it fit perfectly! There was no need for further alterations and I took it home that day. I have since recommended them to everyone I know, and will definitely be bringing more of my clothes there for alterations. read more

Excellent tailoring and alterations at incredibly cheap prices!! They charge a fraction of what other shops charge and the woman who owns it and her mother are terrific tailors. In addition to doing a great job on everyday items (mending and hemming all my pants, yup I am short) they know how to tailor fancy clothing. They took in a leather skirt and fitted and hemmed a 1920's vintage beaded dress for me for ridiculously little money. Their work is flawless; on the beaded dress you can barely see all the work they did. You can take clothes to them and they will tell you what you need to have done to achieve the best look and fit and they also will do a rush job if you need your clothes right away. Don't let the look of the shop put you off. They sell sample clothing and some used clothing (apparently they used to own a clothing manufacturing business) and the place is kind of run down. As others have mentioned they do not take credit cards and sometimes they close during the day but usually not for long. Try John's --- your wallet and your clothes will be very happy you did. read more

Great experience here! I brought in a coat that had a single button + single snap closure on Monday afternoon, and asked if they could add buttons down the front (who makes a Winter coat with a single snap on it?!). By Friday, the seamstress had added 3 buttons identical to the one on the coat's collar, and only charged me $20! My coat is now actually wearable! Amazing place for bridal alterations! I brought my wedding dress here one month before my wedding after a different tailor had taken it in incorrectly. I got 5 pairs of jeans (yes I own a lot of jeans that need tailoring) altered there for under 70 bucks! It was a deal compared to the place I used to go to in Lexington. The woman did a great job. While some might frown upon the ramshackle used clothes for sale on display, and the unassuming interior design of the establishment, this tailoring-and-repair shop beats the competition hands down in service, speed, professionalism, quality and convenience. I despaired at the extremely large rip in my (only good) suit on the day before an important client meeting. After having been turned down for same-day repair by 3 dry-cleaning shops on the way to the office; I started to lose hope. But when I walked in under the unassuming marquee of JOHN'S (complete with flickering old-school shop window neon proclaiming 'ALTERATIONS') my faith in the integrity of American commerce was restored. The lady took the garment, immediately slapped it on the sewing machine, and after several expert passes and a few snips of the tailor shear; handed me back the item, smiling 'No charge'.
