Dr. Jenkins informed me I had a chipped back molar that would require a crown. I tried to talk him out of it. He persisted. Said if I didn't get it taken care of, greater problems may develop. It could be more serious health wise with a greater impact on my pocketbook too. I came to my senses. I made an appointment for Dr. Jenkins to do my crown. It's not a fun process, people, yet necessary. Dr. Jenkins has a wonderful bedside manner, and his top-tier assistant, Miriam, was gentle, encouraging, and skilled. Three days later, the temporary crown popped off! Damn! I immediately called Johnson Family Dental, Goleta. They told me to come on in, which I did. Miriam took great care prepping my molar stub and re-gluing the temporary crown. I had a fine time seeing this dentist office when I lived in goleta. I was a patience there for several years, and while it was often expensive, the work I received and the care seemed good. However, last time I left their office, I paid my account in full - several hundred dollars for a crown - and then I moved away from the area. Months later, they send me a bill for $55. I reached out via phone, leaving messages, and I emailed their office several times to try to understand where this charge originated. Rather than emailing me back or contacting me, this office sent my supposed $55 to a debt collector, who is now harassing me for the cost. I am disputing it with the collector, and it isn't that I can't pay $55 -- but I have a right to know how and why I am charged this much, months after settling my account. I found it to be a petty, unprofessional practice to ignore my messages and send such a meager amount to a debt collection company. So beware of their business practices. read more

Called last minute as 1st time patient and they were able to fit me in same day after a broken crown. Staff was incredible as I had to bring in my 1.5 year with me. I was worried and a little embarrassed but Brenda the dental assistant was so nice and caring while Devin and other staff members entertained my baby as I got x-rays done. Dr. Kim was great and listened to my concern. He was even apologetic for being "behind" even though I waited for like 5min. I used to like this place but its getting so much worse lately. Dentists are nice but many of them have left. It seems right now there's only Dr. Kim who's still taking patients. He is quite caring but he's pretty busy. I can't count how many times I've waited in the office for more than 30mins just to see him. Last time I waited for more than 40 MINS just to get a single X ray, which is absolutely insane. Like other reviews mentioned, dentists here are fine but management really sucks. Also, the front desk messed up my bill and overcharged me twice. There are so many places around the area that do better work. Will never come back. read more

These people are very unprofessional and downright scammers. I had them check my insurance before my appointment to find out what was covered. When I left i had them check again to make sure that my appointment was covered by my insurance. They assured me that everything was 100% covered by my insurance. Two months later I got a bill for $100. They did a procedure that I did not ask for that was not covered. They didn't tell me that it would not be covered. I told them that I didn't feel this was a ligitimate charge and that I would not pay it. They threatened to send it to collections. I told them to go ahead because I would file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and fight it in small claims court. They were so rude. They said it wasn't worth it to them but continued to say it was my responsibility. If I hadn't done my research before hand or didn't bother to ask what was covered I would not have been so upset but they assured me that everything was covered. I am confident that they knew that procedure would not be covered and they didn't inform be before hand. They are rude, they are lousy dentists (they missed a cracked tooth) and they are really bad business people. read more

Dr. Jamie and dental assistant Brenda were amazing. I came in for a check up on a crown I had placed a couple years ago from a previous dentist. Dr Jamie was able to fix the issue the crown caused on the surrounding teeth. Brenda was very hands on and involved during the entire process of filling, shaving and replacing the temp crown on. While I had the temp crown in, I had about three-four days of excruciating pain. I called and was told to come to office within ten minutes of me placing the call. I saw Dr Kim and he checked on the crown and made some adjustments and was sent on my way. The pain went away the day after. When I came back for my permanent crown, I was in and out within 45 minutes. My tooth is smooth, fit close to perfect (some small modifications) and I have no sensitivity now. They even shaved down one of my front teeth that was uneven with no additional charge; also a cleaning. read more

TL;DR : It took this dentist office 3 tries to fit my crown, and now I am terrified of the dentist. Stay away from this dentist office unless you want to unlock a new fear in life. I seem to have had the opposite experience here compared to other Yelpers. Really great admin service, TERRIBLE dental work experience. First, the positives. I went in for a last minute appointment because a filling I got from a different dentist office had fallen out. The front desk staff scheduled me promptly, and was friendly, courteous, and professional. They remained this way for the THREE follow up appointments I had to make. So those three follow up appointments: I ended up visiting this office a total of four times (including that first initial visit) and saw three different dentists. They all seemed friendly enough, but the quality of service I received was severely lacking. VISIT 1: The first dentist told me I needed a crown to replace the filling, and cleaned and prepped my tooth for the crown and put a temporary crown in. I was scheduled to come back a few weeks later. VISIT 2: A different dentist, same assistant. I was not given any painkillers for this second visit, because it was supposed to be a short visit, just popping off the temp and cementing the new one in (emphasis on "supposed to be").They try to put my crown in, keep grinding it down saying it doesn't fit, over and over again repeatedly. It finally goes in, so they take an xray...and then they say that it is now too SMALL, that it doesn't have enough contact!!! They say the crown needs to be sent back to the lab to add contact back, and that I will need to come back to get my permanent crown. No apologies from the assistant nor the dentist, just that they will put the temp back in and so I should come back in two weeks. I'm upset, but let it go, thinking mistakes can happen once. It hurts like hell when the temp goes back in, especially because I had no painkillers. I tell the assistant this and they tell me just go home and take Motrin. (Side story, the dentist also asks me where I am from, which, as an Asian American, feels like micro aggression to me. Do you ask this question to your white patients too?) VISIT 3: same dentist as visit 2, new assistant. The visit takes over 2.5 hours this time, possibly because they had an emergency patient at the same time, so they kept on leaving my room to also care for that patient (they also discuss this patient while working on me, which causes other alarms as well). The assistant and dentist intermittent come work on me in between that other patient, trying to make the crown go in. After over an hour, the dentist says that actually, the foundation work on the crown done during visit 1 is so bad that it needs to be redone. I ask if this means I need to come back and the dentist says yes, and that he will make sure the front desk compensates me for my troubles ('like a whitening or something,' he says offhandedly). I have the crown fitting foundation work done on my tooth again, receiving local anesthesia again and losing another day's work. I was stressed during this entire time, dreading that I will have to return yet again and be in pain AGAIN, not to mention the financial strain of missing work for another dentist appointment in two weeks. When I go to schedule my next appointment, no said compensation is offered. I don't explicitly ask about it either, because frankly, the last thing I want to do is to have to come back to this office again for another service, complimentary or not. (Side story: about a day and half after this visit, I threw my back out, completely seizing my back and unable to move. At the ER they asked me if I have had to stay in the same position for a while recently, or if I have experienced increased stress. This question makes sense to me because the previous day I had sat two hours in the dentist chair having different people come shove a crown in and out of my mouth multiple times. Yes I know back injuries can happen for many reasons. But mine came the next day after this dentist visit, and the back injury occurred as I was just bending down to pick up a piece of trash. No other stressing incident had occurred in my life recently except for this dental visit) VISIT 4: a new dentist again, same assistant as visit 1. The crown has to be shaved down a little bit once again, and I'm nervous because I think it'll become too small again. Thankfully it goes in, X-ray looks okay, and they say it is fine, that I have good contact now. When I come home and floss, I don't feel like the floss is super tight back there, but whatever, I am just happy that I won't ever have to go back to this dentist office again. read more

The staff were kinda, but everything else was really not great. I went in because my gums were bothering me in the back of my mouth. I also let them know my dental deductible was maxed out for the year. They took two xrays and let me know i could pay a flat rate of $29. They didn't find anything wrong at all and basically just told me to rinse with salt water. At the end of the appointment, they told me it was not legal to charge the flat fee to someone with insurance and they HAD to bill insurance. I got a bill for $130! When i called and said I would not have allowed the xrays had I known this would be the cost, they said that they had made a mistake and they could just charge me the $30. But had I not called, they would have just charged the $130! Ridiculous. It took 10 days for the bill to look any different on my end, even though they said the adjustment would come through immediately. Anyway, just paid it and happy to be done with the situation. Also there was something stuck in my gums, and I dealt with it myself after the appointment! read more

I had a WONDERFUL experience at Johnson Family Dental working with Dr. Doane, Susana, and Sophie! I had a pretty large filling in one of my molars, and a piece of my tooth broke off so I've been trying to find a dentist to fix it. The area where my tooth broke was extremely sensitive. I went to see one dentist, who (despite me expressing how painful any temperature changes felt) went ahead and put in a temporary filling WITHOUT ANESTHESIA and without telling me. Needless to say I was in excruciating pain, and swore I'd never get work done with him again. Unfortunately, the temporary filling fell out, so I had to go see another dentist. This dentist did use anesthesia, and even so, the pain I felt when he put in the filling was extreme - y'all can imagine just how bad it was the first time, when after TWO shots of anesthesia the experience was still so painful that my body had involuntary responses to the pain. I decided I needed to find another place where I would be heard. This time, however, I hit the jackpot! The staff at Johnson Family Dental were extremely kind and listened to my needs instead of just trying to push through the pain. Dr. Doane was very attentive and made sure I felt no pain as he was working on my tooth. I was really lucky that I was able to get an appointment within two days, and they got to work on starting my crown work. Throughout the whole process, the staff explained what they were doing and made sure to check in with me to make sure I was comfortable. I cannot recommend these folks enough! read more

Came in for a quick exam/check up Brenda the assistant took my X-rays she was quick and gentle I had Dr. Kim do my exam he came in very respectful great personality and took time to explain every thing to me he also told me I had a few cavities and lucky they were able to fit me in for same day treatment.! Dr. Kim and his assistant Brenda are the best got me in and out less than a hour.! I would recommend Johnson Family Dental out here in Goleta to my friends and family members and ask For Dr. Kim he is the BEST.!! He didn't guilt me or make me feel intimidated by him like other dentists I've been to! However, the front assistants made me feel unwelcome. They greeted others with a smile but I only got a glance before they returned to their conversation. The dental assistant who was assisting me also talked about my 'diagnosis' at the front desk to me AND in front of others while I was figuring out my next visit. It made me feel humiliated and disrespected as a patient. I don't know if that goes against HIPPA laws but I didn't say anything. The Super Cuts of dentistry. I just needed a cleaning. I called and easily made an apt for 10AM 6 months in advance. At 10:15 they call me back for an exam. I'm 7 months pregnant and they were really annoyed and rude about me not wanting X-Rays saying they can't do an exam without X-Rays. I've literally never gone to another dentist that has had an issue with me not wanting an X-Ray; they just do exams by poking and looking. So they sent me back to the waiting room before my cleaning. I didn't get into my cleaning until 11:15am, FOR A 10AM APT! The cleaning was fine and the hygienist was nice, but I was there 2 hours for a simple 20 minute cleaning. Won't be going back. read more

The receptionist was so sweet, she took the time to explain how the process would be, and called to check my insurance and make sure everything was set! The doctor was also really nice and took the time to explain everything! She also made it really easy to ask questions. Highly recommend Dr. Kim and this office in general for anyone in the area- especially if apprehensive about dental work! I know I was when I came to the office last year in need of fillings, possible root canals, a crown, and in hopes of starting Reveal clear aligners. Dr. Kim and the office staff have since assisted with all of these and more while always making sure I am comfortable and well informed about my treatment/options. A far departure from my previous dentist, Dr. Kim is very skilled at what he does- gentle even during long procedures and shows genuine care for his patients wellbeing. Dental care was okay but the service is ABYSMAL. My wife and I both had multiple appointments canceled or pushed back and cancelled because hygienists keep leaving. This office is flaky at best and I recommend finding a dental care provider who respects your time. I'll start by saying I hadn't visited a dentist in 3 years. Not because I have an irrational fear of them but mostly because I've moved around the last few years and only recently settled in Goleta and had been putting off the inconvenience of looking up my insurance information, choosing a dentist within my network, and setting up an appointment. What initially attracted me to this office was it's proximity to my home in Goleta and also that I knew that the facility was brand new with the convenience of plenty of parking. I also noticed that they are open beyond regular business hours (till 7) which is fantastic for working professionals that don't want to take time off of work. When I finally got ahold of my insurance info, I was pleased to find out that Johnson has providers within the Delta Dental network. I forced myself to make the call to schedule a new patient consultation/exam as well as a cleaning, and was pleased how quickly and efficiently the staff was able to find me two back to back appointments after 5pm that same week! I showed up and the office is really inviting, staff was very clear in explaining the process of filling out the new patient paperwork. The front had a little area with coffee, fruit, and cookies (kind of counter productive though?) There's a mini fridge with juice boxes, and water which is great since sometimes you rush to or from your appointments and need a quick snack. The restroom also had mouthwash and there's a tooth brushing station in case you had to eat right before your appointment. I was seen right on time and had complimentary x-rays done. I was then promptly seen by the dentist who answered all of my questions. I asked about a tooth that that I was concerned about and she informed me that it was a "watch" area and didn't need to be treated right away, but I could if I wanted to. It was helpful to know that this dentist wasn't trying to push any unnecessary treatments. I then saw a hygienist for my cleaning. She was also very clear in explaining everything she was doing and made the process quick and painless. She even took a look at what my insurance covered and offered me the included fluoride treatment. The front desk staff was once again very helpful in explaining the billing process and what my insurance would and wouldn't cover. I scheduled my next cleaning and am looking forward to that visit! I recently moved from Colorado and needed a dentist. I hadn't gone in about year due to finishing up college. I was also nervous because I knew my teeth had shifted since I never wore my retainers. I voiced this to Dr.Janelle and she provided an alternative, Invisalign. (I didn't want braces as an adult so thank goodness). It was a quick , easy process! Silvio (i believe that was his name?) helped take my impressions and within about 3 weeks I received my case. They suggested I get a cleaning prior and my hygienist was very friendly and informative! Office is overall clean and welcoming. The only thing I would say is stay away from their cookies! I can't wait to see how much my smile improves. read more

Highly recommend Dr. Doane and his staff for any dental work. I came after being botched by a previous orthodontist and he set up an entire plan on the first visit to get my teeth back to normal. I just had my wisdom teeth removed by him last week and the procedure went very smoothly. Prior to the procedure he explained exactly how it would go and answered all my questions so that I was comfortable, which eased my nerves a ton. He was very attentive post-op, even calling me from his cell to check up on me in the days following. I had no complications and recovered very quickly. The entire staff is very approachable, kind, and attentive to your needs. It's clear they care about your best interests and not just money you are bringing in. As someone who has had a difficult past with dentists, I am glad I found Dr. Doane. I will only be coming here from now on! read more

These people are extremely nice, but I wouldn't recommend coming here. I was new to the area and this location was in my insurance network and close by, so I set up an appointment. I should have been warned by the fact that I had to call three different times for various reasons before my appointment, and they never had my name spelled correctly and I had to respell it for them each time. When I went in, I got some xrays and was given an exam by the dentist. I should mention here that I noticed on my file that my name was STILL misspelled. It's not that I'm offended by the misspelling of my name, but how can I trust them with my medical information and health if they can't get that right? Then, the person who did my xrays came back in and said that we could schedule my appointment for my cleaning because the hygienist got backed up. I was super confused because, as many places as I've lived in the past 10 years, I have never been to a dentist appointment and had separate appointments for the exam and cleaning. I was also a little mad because I took off work already for this appointment, now I have to do it again?? Anyway i tried not to hold it against them because if their patients are backed up then they just are - they can't just make an extra hygienist appear out of nowhere. But still...isn't that the point of appointments, so you don't get backed up?? I double checked with her that I would do the cleaning separately and she said "yes, you have to let us know if you want to do the exam and cleaning at the same time". 1) What?! That has never been a thing anywhere and 2) didn't you just tell me it was because the hygienist was backed up in her appointments?!?! Wild. So I decided to go to a different dentist because these people couldn't get it together and just lied to my face. Had to call, again, SEVERAL times to get my xrays emailed over to the new dentist. Worst of all, and this wasn't specifically their fault, since I went to them first and had to redo the exam at a new dentist, when I needed emergency palliative care later in the year for a broken tooth, my insurance had already been used up for the year since I had technically already had two exams. Again that part is not their fault, but it added insult to injury since I had to find someone competent after going to their office. Anyway, if it wasn't obvious from my review, I wouldn't trust these people with my health if I were you. Avoid at all cost as their service has severely deteriorated compared to what it was in the past. Where to begin with this place, and I mean all JFD locations. First and what's the biggest concern, I was prescribed penicillin when it is documented that I am allergic to this. I requested IV sedation for my dental implant and when I called the same day to ask what I need to do to prepare for this, they tell me the doctor wasn't aware of this and isn't prepared for the IV sedation during my procedure and we would need to reschedule. Their hours are not updated anywhere. Google, their website, and their voicemail recording all they open at 8:00 a.m. but when I show up at 8:00 nobody's at the office. Their recording explicitly states they are open every first and third Saturday of the month and again when I show up on the third Saturday they are closed. Don't even bother leaving a message because they won't call you back. I've had multiple appointments for different types of procedures rescheduled at the last minute even though I received a text confirmation the same day they rescheduled. Zero reliability. I had my Invisalign appointment cancelled at the last minute for them to say my only option to see my orthodontist that I've been seeing for 2 years is to drive all the way out to Solvang. I call the Solvang office to get this sorted out ,and they say they'll call me back, but guess what I never received a call back. read more

Ok, after my one terrible billing experience, I ended up going here two more times over the course of a year, and Nicole and Dr. Tanya have won me over. These two are so professional and I feel like a valued patient in their care. I appreciate their kind, informative demeanor when they summarize their observations after my cleaning/exam and I especially appreciate how they present options for potential future work, but never push nor pressure me into any procedure. The receptionist staff has been very friendly and helpful. They informed me that everything should be covered by my insurance but if for some odd reason I get a bill, then I should bring it to them and they'll take complete care of it. Did they read my last review and then radically change their approach with me? Or was I just unlucky with one outlier experience in 2018? I swear! they mislead you with their marketing strategies. they had a "Free Examination and X-rays for new patients" Advertisement not knowing they'll charge your insurance. they said it's for free because they didn't charge you personally but they did charge your insurance. and Plus Christina was yelling over the phone until I said I'll just make a bad review at yelp, and she did calm down and acted like she's "nice" and she's on my side. but I know she's not sincere with that. she even told me she's gonna call back but she never did. never coming back to this. clinic.
