After a horrible previous experience at another dentist office, this was a breathe of fresh air. I was welcomed by a friendly receptionist. They keep their office very clean and tidy and comfortable. I felt very taken care of and made a priority. Everyone I met was friendly and helpful and smart. The cleaning was gentle, I'm used to a little more intensive cleanings but I think they took care of what I needed. read more

I first found Dr. Stratford-Jones in 2005 when I went in for, what I thought would be, a teeth cleaning. At the time, I had HMO insurance and was told it only covered an assessment- not a cleaning. I was very disappointed. I moved back to Santa Barbara a couple years ago and decided to try Dr. Stratford-Jones again- 3 times. First thing I noticed: he isn't there. His name is on the door, but he seems to have a revolving door of temporary dentists. I was told he works two-days a week, although my husband and myself haven't had any interactions with him, despite different appointment days. I have been to Dr. Stratford-Jones's office several times for teeth cleanings. My experiences with my hygienist have always been positive. She is knowledgable and thorough. The dentist on site, on the other hand- she is not impressive. I now have better dental insurance and, at my most recent visit, the dentist attempted to upsell me to Invisalign (the mouth-guard type of braces for adults). I had braces as a child and my teeth are in pretty good condition. When I asked how much the braces would be, one of the admin team members, Chris, misrepresented the total. I cannot remember how much specifically (it was between $3000-5000), but for the sake of indicating what I mean, instead of saying, for example, $3,013, he said said, "it's only thirty-three thirteen."Also, $3,000 is a lot of money, so the word "only" isn't appropriate. The whole presentation of financial specifics was done poorly- he didn't have the amounts available with insurance and told me he would call in a day with that information. My appointment was on a Thursday and he said insurance was east coast time, so would take one day. He should have said that he wouldn't have specifics until the following week to save me from following-up on Friday and Monday requesting information. Admittedly, Chris is a new employee with the facility. I find him very challenging to communicate with, particularly since he leaves out pertinent information. Also, I don't need Invisalign and was surprised at the dentist's insistence that I get them. I "settled" on the recommendation of a bottom retainer and new mouth guard. I missed my 5-minute fitting appointment, and my husband was charged a $50 fee two-weeks later, even though I don't recall being advised of any kind of cancellation/no show fee. Meanwhile, my husband went to the dentist to have a tooth with an area of discoloration fixed. He was not advised that the dentist was filing his tooth down, and if he HAD been told, he wouldn't have provided consent. He didn't realize she was filing it down until she said "oh, it's going to look like you went to the beach!" pointing out the particles of tooth remnants on his shirt. My husband was very disappointed about the shoddy dental work done on his tooth, particularly the loss of his tooth from her filing it down. The discoloration remained. To add insult to injury, he was charged $60 for a job poorly-done, but when the bill from insurance came, it indicated: the facility tried to claim $255.00, of which the accepted total fee was $117.00, delta paid $93.60 leaving a balance of $23.40. My husband paid $60, not $23.40. The dentist not only failed to fix it, but she tried to upsell him on veneers. Excuse me? He doesn't need a new mouthful of teeth. His teeth are perfectly fine. Why in the world would that have been a recommendation? We were both really upset about the modus operandi of this business: they are only looking to upsell. My follow-up 5-minute fitting appointment to get the new mouthguard fell within a couple days of my husband's very upsetting visit. While I love my hygienist and appreciate the front staff, Daniel, I find the business model to be directed towards financial gain. I fear for patients who are more vulnerable to the successful financial wheedling of this dentist. I am not into that. We will be finding a new dentist. read more

I've been going to Dr. Stratford-Jones for 16 years. In the whole 16 years, I have had nothing but great experiences there and would totally recommend him to anyone looking for a dentist. The only "gripe" is the limited parking. You just have to go at a good time... usually early AM. However, thanks to COVID, I've been able to find easy parking.. but I know this will change once everything is back to "normal". read more

Digging for Gold. I believe they give inaccurate and embellished info. This office is more interested in making a sale $$$. They upsold my wife before the dentist even saw her and convinced her she needed a $150 shot. The dentist told me I had a bunch of cavities and needed two crowns. I got a a second opinion and the new office doctor told me it wasn't necessary. I think Jefferey should take his name off the office door as he is not present any longer. Furthermore, they seem to take full advantage when you have dental insurance (methinks) because they assume you are locked in and won't seek a second opinion and so they try to financially take advantage. read more

These guys seem more interested in just getting you into a chair and taking your money. So many times I showed up for my appointment and I had to jus wait, 15, 20, 45mins one time. They do 30mins of work and charge me $1000. What did it for me was when I had a filling done, and it wouldn't stop hurting. I told them over and over again and they said it was normal, that it would go away, it didn't. The filling came out and caused me a lot of pain. They took care of it and said they would not charge me since it was their mistake.... that was a lie. They are trying to charge me, and threatened to take me to collections for their mistake. I haven't met Dr. Jeffrey, but Dr. Daniela is wonderful and so is all the staff. I am getting Invisalign treatment through them and so far I have only great things to say. Be prepared to pay for just walking in. Recently moved from L.A to SB and it was time for my cleaning, I get one every six months. I know that with my insurance, my cleanings are covered 100%. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I went in for a preventative basic cleaning and was expected to pay over $100. Something that is clearly covered every time from my dentist in L.A. This is the second time this place wants to charge me for a service. Glad I asked before I walked in this time. I'll just keep going to my wonderful dentist in LA, until I can find a trust worthy one in SB. read more

I came to this office to get a decent amount of work done, but overall I've found them overworked and unresponsive. Appointments are achingly slow to schedule, and then one if often left waiting for a while anyway. Today, for example, I was left waiting for 20 minutes in the chair before finally having to go ask someone what was going on. The dentist (not that one who owns the practice, natch: I saw him a grand total of one times, when I first signed up), was pretty clearly rushing and had way too many other people to get to. Seriously, go elsewhere. The doctor can't even be bothered to show up to his own practice. read more

I've reviewed this office before. But they deserve a revisit. Because dentists give me the heebie-jeebies. You really have to twist my arm to get me in a chair. However From the front desk to the hygenists to the dentists, the team at this office orients themselves around the patient's experience and overall dental health. They never try to upsell me some product I don't need. They never make me feel bad about the fact that I DON'T ALWAYS (EVER) FLOSS. (Last time, the hygienist was like, 'so, you might want a hydro-floss thing. I think Costco has them.' And I was like. 'Yeah.' Full stop. 'Not, hey guess what, your teeth suck.' Because what mother-of-three has time to floss?) The atmosphere at Stratford-Jones is positive, affirming, and knowledgeable. I've been ripped off by a lot of dentists in the past. This office has never recommended a treatment I don't need; they always explain what they're doing as they're doing it; they never make me feel bad about my teeth. If I could, there would be negative 5 stars. Their comunication is below average. When I called to make my appointment and gave them my insurance, I asked what portion I would be responsibile for. (I have been surprised way too much by my insurance and bill after bill to not ask beforehand). After a 10 minute hold, Amanda told me nothing "it was totally covered by insurance." When I sat down for 80 minutes of x-rays I repeated the question. The dental assistant left the room for 10 minutes. When she returned she said "no". Before I left I was given a document for a cavity and a filling, with what I would be responsible for. It was $61. I was told to sign it and I did. Two days later I got a bill for $168 for my annual checkup. I was furious. Not because I was responsible and had to pay them, but because they didn't tell me this upfront when I asked. Twice. I called the dentist and after a lengthy fully back-and-forth on email, he took nearly half of the bill off and was kind enough to explain that the staff was new, and to be patient with their mistake. I called to pay that bill and to set up an appointment for the filling, and was told by the receptionist that bill would be over $150. I was again furious because I had a document that I had signed saying that I would be responsible for the $61 to cover the filling. I asked to speak with the manager so that I could have my records forwarded to another dentist. I'm going to have to pay for new x-rays prior to my filling and I am fine with that. I am not fine with the disorganization, poor communication, and bad customer service of Dr. Jones's office. I would not recommend them to anyone. read more

Dr. Stratford-Jones came highly recommended by several of my co-workers. One person even told me she found him after another dentist tried to over-treat her, and Dr. S-J told her she didn't need the work that was recommended by the first dentist. My experience wasn't that great. Quick summary: I got a weird vibe from the staff, the cleaning wasn't thorough, I suspect the work that was recommended may not be necessary, and they forgot to write down my follow-up appointment and weren't very apologetic about it -- I left feeling like they all thought I was lying about having made the appointment. Details: I felt like the hygienist wasn't as thorough as past hygienists in other offices. Then, Dr. S-J said that 2 of my teeth were cracked and showed signs of decay. He said they needed to have the fillings replaced, but that he thought once he got in there that they might actually break off and need crowns. It seemed weird to me that he didn't know, and there's a pretty big difference between a filling and a crown from the patient's perspective. I know my teeth are cracked, but I have no pain and am content to wait until I do. When I suggested this, Dr. S-J didn't respond, he just gave me a serious look, shook my hand, and said it had been nice meeting me. I felt weird after that. Why didn't he discuss my options with me? Did he just think I had only one option, to get the work done, and there was nothing to discuss? He had initially seemed friendly, but I left feeling like I had done something wrong. Yet I also felt like it was weird for a dentist to wait until a patient was in the chair to decide between a low cost fix (filling) and a crown. I am not made of money, and a decision like this needs to be made with complete and accurate information. I went to my office, then called and made an appointment to get the filling/maybe crown work done. When I showed up for the follow up appt., they had no record of my appointment. While I was there being told they had no record of the appt., a co-worker of mine came in to the office. He's young, maybe 25. I asked him why he was there. He said Dr. S-J said he had a tooth that looked like he needed a filling but that once in the chair, it could turn into a crown. My co-worker had gotten the work done a month prior, and since then, was experiencing pain in his bite. He had been back twice to get it adjusted. He had not had any pain prior to treatment. A couple weeks later, I checked in with my co-worker, and he said the Dr. S-J said they had done all they could. My co-worker still has pain in his bite. I decided that the office staff messing up my appt. was a blessing in disguise, and I won't be going back. read more

Everyone I interacted with was very friendly and knowledgeable, and I didn't spend more than a minute in the waiting room both times I was there. Everyone that works here is super friendly. The Doc is very good at what he does. I cracked a tooth last night and due to my traveling schedule ahead of me, they were able to get me in the next day (today) and I'll be back next week to get the official crown put in. For years, I'd go to 'Johnson Family Dental' in La Cumbre but that place could never tell me exactly how much a procedure was going to cost me. The staff at Dr Stratford-Jones is nearly always able to tell me exactly how much the bill will be before I get the work done. And the Doc always seems to provide multiple options, one that will cost a little, and one that is optimal but will cost more. If there are options, the patient should always get to choose, and 'Johnson Family Dental' never gave those less expensive options. I definitely recommend these guys. read more

Just had my first visit here and am very pleased with the service and friendliness of the staff. The steps they are taking for COVID safety were explained when I scheduled the appointment, I received reminder texts prior to the appointment which I appreciated. I do experience some anxiety when going for a cleaning but found some relief as all the steps of the appointment were explained to me before anything happened. The receptionist ruined the experience for me. She was telling me about the option of CareCredit. I speculated and asked her if it was a credit card. She said "it's a payment plan".... Wrong-- it is a credit card. This is when the spiral of disaster started. So I am very careful about opening credit cards in conscientiousness of my credit score. But I figured since she had told me it wasn't a credit card and just a payment plan, I would look further into it. She asked if I wanted to see if I would be approved. I said, "I'd like to see if I would be approved but not open an account just yet, is that ok?" She said, "yes". She failed to inform me that "seeing if I would get approved" is the same thing as OPENING AN ACCOUNT. Now I have another credit card account that I didn't want to begin with, because the receptionist was unclear and misleading. And now I have to deal with the headache of the credit bureau to close the account while trying to not hurt my credit score. This could have all been avoided if the receptionist was more clear and understood what CareCredit actually was. I felt I had been misled and pressured to sign a form opening care credit when I actually did not want to open one. In other aspects: - the dental hygienists are very sweet and thorough. - the actual dentist lacks some bedside manner skills, and I did not feel compelled towards choosing him as a dentist. - Please go elsewhere. read more

He is the worst dentist in town. He is extremely unreliable and unprofessional. I've been trying to get him to fill a cavity since February 4th (almost two months now). He will cancel apts the day of the apt then he will "reschedule you" which means basically he'll have you drive across town just to tell you that they're low on staff so they can't do anything today anyways. Then they'll reschedule you again for 8 weeks later (you can never get in sooner than 8 weeks). Also they also never answer the emergency phone in emergencies so I guess that number is just for show. But if you do happen to finally find another dentist on your insurance and you ask him to transfer over xrays he will call that dentist and try to convince them not to work on you because he's going take care of it eventually. I really wish I could give less than one star. Obviously never going back here again. read more

Dr. Stratford-Jones recommended an inlay to replace an old filling. The old filling was not causing me any trouble but because of some cracks he suggested this as the best avenue of avoiding a root canal in the future. It has been two months since the inlay was done. Immediately after the procedure, I had pain and discomfort in the tooth and returned to Dr. Stratford-Jones. He adjusted the new filling saying that it was possibly too high. Most of the pain subsided but I still have considerable discomfort. Needless to say I have lost confidence in this dentist, and am looking for another professional to help me. I would suggest looking elsewhere for dental care. read more
