I had seen Dr. Calvin Kim one time a while ago for a consultation regarding major bridgework; the visit was okay but I didn't feel comfortable with the open multi patient areas (just a partition on the sides of each patient area; open above all the partitions) during COVID. I ended up postponing the major work for a variety of reasons. I then called the office in November regarding the insurance plans they accepted as I was going through open enrollment options with my retirement plan. I left a message. No one called me back. I then sent an email through their website, explaining that I had contacted them regarding insurance but they never returned my call and now my open enrollment had closed . I expressed concern with their lack of follow-up. I never received a response to the email either. While Dr. Kim may be a proficient dentist, the office response to inquiries is poor. There are many highly recommended dentists in the Santa Barbara area...thankfully. read more

Nice clean office. Wanted to try a new dentist because of the good reviews and ample parking vs my regular dentist. But what I didn't like more than the tight parking spaces of my regular dentist was the pressure tactics I felt they put on me to go back for added services. Plus I feel like my cleaning was a bit rushed. I was in and out of there much quicker than a cleaning usually takes for me - which was odd. I plan on going back to my regular dentist. I went in to get some cavities filled with the Kim's. Now, before I had this procedure done I had talked with my insurance and with the Kim's and a price was decided as the final price for it. It was Sonia Kim that worked on me, she did a great job and was very kind. Some time goes by and I receive a bill in the mail, 3x the amount we decided on. I was pretty upset about this especially when it was made so clear to me that it was going to be the other amount. After several days of phone tag with the person that is the head of billing they did end up dropping the amount, not to the amount that was originally agreed on but still less. So overall the service I received was good but unfortunately the billing was not done well and I felt I could no My advice to new patients: Make sure you know 100% what you will be paying before the procedure is done. Make a note of this so you have it documented/on record and can present it later if they try to over charge you. Advice to the Kim's: If you tell your patient's a certain amount, keep your word and make sure that is all they are charged. You will have much happier clients and can avoid the headache of all the phone calls! : / read more

Watch for the extra fees! We have two dental insurances and got charged $40 after a cleaning appointment. It was later credited back, but the two insurance actually paid $50 more than what's on their bill. Then, during Covid-19, we were also charged $50 for a cancellation fee. No one said about the $50 fee when we called and cancel, but later they told us it's on the policy that we signed up as new patient. We'd appreciate an reminder if that's the policy when talking to the receptionist on the phone to cancel. read more

Its ridiculously expensive and I never quite floss as much as I should However, it is absolutely necessary if you still want to chow down use your natural teeth when you are old. Kim dentistry is run by a husband and wife team, along with 3 hygienists and a couple of office workers. Everyone is polite down to the receptionist. The lady who take care of the insurance billing is organized and knowledgeable. Its a small practice and Dr. Kim is a soft spoken guy with excellent bedside manner. His wife is also a very good dentist. The office is spotless, and since the practice is relatively new, all the equipment are also new and state of art. What a contrast to my awful dental experience in Virginia, where I was seen more as cha ching than a patient. I have had the worst luck with dentists. Luckily, I looked up this practice on Yelp and was glad to see that they lived up to their good reviews. There are two dentists here, Dr. Calvin Kim and Dr. Sonia Kim. I've been twice now. The first time I saw Sonia for a regular check up. She was super friendly and made sure I knew what was going on with my teeth. She spotted a cavity, so she took a picture of it with their fancy mouth camera and showed it to me. I got a lot of face time with the actual dentist, instead of just the assistants...but even they are awesome, too! I came back to get my cavity filled, and this time saw Calvin. He was also very nice, and explained everything as he went along to make sure I understood. Everything went smoothly and I could hardly even tell that I had a filling! Overall this office is great. Everything is bright, clean, and modern. The receptionist is very nice and makes sure everything is running smoothly. I also like that this office is "high tech" by using e-mail and text messages to remind you and confirm your appointments. I will definitely come back as long as I am in the area!! read more

They were really a fantastic dentist and I really wish I could have continued to use them as they were always really gentle and efficient (I have a lot of cavities). Dr. Kim is the best dentist I have ever been to. I have no complaints. The waiting room is very comfortable and classy, with plush furniture and a flat screen TV playing on a low volume. The check-in process was painless and I was called in very quickly. They do all digital X-rays, which means you don't have that painful little plastic piece between your teeth and your cheeks, and you get to see the X-ray in real time on the screen right in front of the chair! After the X-rays they played a video on proper brushing and flossing. Then, Dr. Kim came in, examined my teeth and talked to me about how things looked. Guess what happened next? He proceeded to do the cleaning himself! This is the ONLY time I have ever had a dentist (and not a dental assistant) clean my teeth. He was very gentle and thorough, spending more time than other dental offices I have been at, and his dental assistant was basically his unspoken right hand through the whole thing. Dr. Calvin Kim and Dr. Sonia Kim are extraordinary dentists! They are very knowledgeable and very friendly dentists. There office is very welcoming and the staff is always very polite. There have been a few occasions where both doctors have actually given me a teeth cleaning which surprised me because every other dentist I've seen never cleaned my teeth themselves. They have never tried to sell me on unnecessary dental work. They are always very honest with me about my dental health and give me necessary feedback without making me feel like a utter failure when I haven't done everything I should. I like that they take their time and I never feel like they are rushing to get done. Usually my cleanings are between 20 - 40 mins. They are always willing to answer any questions I have and actually take the time to demonstrate anything I am still unclear on. I have referred friends to them and will continue to do so. Amazing! Absolutely amazing. After being told I would have to wait over a month to get an appointment at the UCSB dental center, I called Dr.Kim's office and was able to get an appointment the next day. I downloaded the new patient paperwork off their website (no forms to fill out when I got there) and then relaxed. When I got there, they completed a new patient intake interview to assess any concerns and get my history. The dentist was part of this interview too. Then I went to a chair and got x-rays done. Then Dr.Kim came back and checked the x-rays and cleaned my teeth. THE DENTIST CLEANED MY TEETH. Not the hygienist or the assistant, the dentist. He was careful to answer all of my questions and only made a little small talk (and not when his hands were in my mouth). The front desk scheduled my next appointment and emailed me a confirmation. Dr. Kim is awesome. He has fixed all my dental problems, is in-network and is very fair priced. I have gotten a few cavities filled due to a lack of insurance in the past...and he has taken care of everything. The Hygienists are all friendly and awesome. I had a huge cavity under a crown. Dr. Kim proved to be gentle, knowledgable, and skilled. He has leading edge technology: the new crown was milled on site and fitted 20 minutes later! AND he takes insurance. He is a good listener who answers all questions intelligibly. He drilled out the old crown, dealt with decay below the gum line, all and then fiddled with the 3D pics, filling and removing on the model right there in front of me. It was mesmerizing! When I first moved to Santa Barbara I researched dentists on yelp very thoroughly because I had undergone a nightmare in SLO where my insurance mandated that I use one dentist that was very bad. In fact, at one point they asked me when I was coming back for more work and I lied and said I was moving out of the country because I was so afraid. So when I came to SB I wanted to be very careful and choose the best for me. I chose well because this office has a nice staff, the latest in technology, a gentle and responsive style, and the husband and wife team of Dr. Kim and Dr. Sonia whom are both meticulous, friendly, and professional. Unfortunately for me I've always had dental issues like a sideways molar that wouldn't rise, braces, and lots of cavities (my own fault). So I've seen a lot of dentists and an orthodontist in my day. These guys are the best I've seen so far and since I have dentist PTSD from my prior experiences it's helpful that they are as gentle and comforting as possible. read more

I carefully chose this dentist after researching many in the area and was extremely disappointed by my experience. Strike 1: After asking the dental assistant to please keep the x-rays to a minimum, she messed up on the set up so many times that I had more x-rays in one sitting that I've had in my entire life put together. I know it was a mistake (or 5) but seriously? 15 x-rays in one sitting?! Please train your employees to operate your equipment. Strike 2: The doctor (Ms. Kim) convinced me I absolutely NEEDED a "night guard" even though I wear invisalign while sleeping which essentially does the same thing. She was so pushy I finally agreed. It wasn't until I went to make my next appointment that they told me it's not covered at all by insurance and they handed me a bill for over $300. Oh now I understand why it's so necessary...... Strike 3: My second appointment (for a cavity found at the first appointment) was on my lunch break from work, which I made clear when scheduling the appointment. I showed up 5 minutes early, sat in the waiting room for 10 minutes, then sat in the chair for literally 35 minutes before the doctor even acknowledged my existence. She offered to do the filling "quickly" when I tried to get up and leave and blamed it on me for not telling her more clearly that I was on my lunch break. Even if I wasn't, who has 45 minutes in the middle of the day to waste waiting for you?! Needless to say, I have chosen to take my business elsewhere, where people know how to operate their own equipment and don't try to steal your money or waste your time. read more

At my initial appointment I was a slightly intimidated by the cool, highly business oriented atmosphere; however, after meeting Calvin and Sonia and attending one or two appointments, I began to feel completely comfortable and welcomed in this establishment. Moreover, I was able to quickly develop a trust and a great relationship with all of the employees that work here. I've been a patient with Dr. Sonia for about 6 months now and am very happy. I was initially referred here by a friend who was treated for Invisalign, which I am now halfway through my own treatment. Because I have felt so comfortable, I decided to switch to them for my cleanings and check ups as well (have had only 1 so far). The hygienist I had was very thorough. Dr. Kim's office is beautiful, updated, and cozy. It like that it feels like I am going to a locally owned office and not a corporate money-hungry office (*cough*JohnsonFamilyDental*cough*). What's great is that their office doesn't seem too busy and they always provide a friendly and warm welcome when I arrive. I'm in the office quite often because of my Invisalign, and I feel like they genuinely care about my case. You know you have a good dentist when you actually look forward to your visits! An important note is that Dr. Sonia quoted me the BEST price for my invisalign treatment - roughly $2,000 cheaper than elsewhere. My family have been to Dr. Kim for over 5 years. Everything was fine until last year. I noticed their front desk/billing team have been changing and the service that I received was not as great as before. Until recently, I have an unclear billing issue with them, the billing person never available, the front desk receptionist told me that the amount was correct but won't explain anything to me and said the billing person will call me. Over a month attempted (calls/in person) to try to get a hold with the billing person. I had to have my insurance to get involved. The receptionist also told me that I own them money but found out that they have submitted the claim wrong. If you have any billing issue don't waste your time to talk to the front desk receptionist, unless you want to tell again what you already know and the billing person will get back to you but in my case the billing person never get back to me for over 7 weeks. Although the front desk receptionist was not helpful with my billings but she was happy to cancel my next appointment like doing me a big favor. The only reason I give two stars instead of one is the positive experiences that I received from both Dr. Kim and their hygienist over the years. read more

I had been a patient of Dr. Sonia Kim for a few years and had been pleased with the service here until my husband was recently added to my insurance. He had not gone to the dentist in several years so I was happy he was accepted as a new patient. Unfortunately he was overcharged for services and the staff refused to refund him the balance owed for several months. He took time away from work to go to the office and the front desk staff kept deferring and saying only Dr. Calvin could fix the issue. We didn't get reimbursed until we filed a complaint with our insurance company (we did get a prompt response once the complaint was filed). They are competent dentists but I cannot trust them anymore to handle standard billing issues. Keep a close eye on your bills and make sure to check in with your insurance company about what the charges should be. read more

I've had excellent dental care over the years and had high expectations, but Dr Calvin Kim and staff exceeded these! I chose them because of proximity...but I stay with them because of extraordinary care. With each visit I am well-informed of the course of treatment and expected cost. Dr Kim has state-of-the-art equipment and replaced a crown in one visit and there was never that awkward "I have something different in my mouth" feeling. I have a confession. I have a mild fear of dentists. When I chipped my tooth from the sheer force from my nightly teeth-grinding, I very seriously considered shaving it down myself before a good friend scolded and deterred me and good thing too. I sat fiddling with my fingers while Dr. Calvin Kim introduced himself, and I braced myself for the inevitable tools poking and prodding into my mouth and the little bit of uncertainty that came with not being able to see what's going on in there. However, Dr. Kim did not approach me in the familiar terse no-nonsense manner in which doctors often assume when attacking a problem. He asked where I'm from, what I do, and told me a bit about his own life before proceeding to address the reason for my visit. He performed a thorough examination, and even pointed out a few more chips I didn't notice. He suggested a night-guard, then handed me a mirror. He then alternated between shaving down the chipped area, then asking me to look in the mirror and give him feedback. Would I like it shaved down more? Do I like it where it is? Now... perhaps I am not the best reference for determining normal dentist behavior seeing as I stuck with one dentist for 10+ years since I was 5 years old. But I've never had my dentist ask me for feedback midway through procedure in this casual and friendly way. All the uneasiness about the foreboding unknown-happenings-in-my-mouth flew away. Heck, even the terrifying chair seemed quite cushy and warm by now. Needless to say, all my teeth concerns in the future will be directed to Dr. Kim's office. I liked the pleasant administrative staff as well as the friendly dental assistants, and especially Dr. Kim's sharp skills and friendly demeanor. I suppose I don't fear dentists now. read more
