Joli Bijou Salon is new to me, but not my hairdresser, Cindy Viola, who moved over from Secret Agent Salon where I saw her for years. Cindy is one of the best out there. Because I do not live in San Francisco anymore and haven't for some time, I have a couple stylists I rotate through near where I live. But, I have always returned to Cindy when, after a few cuts, I know she will just "get it," and give me a fresh start. There is never any attitude or judgmental BS. She is lovely in so many ways, and worth every bit of extra time to get into the City. I always feel amazing when I leave the salon. My twenty-something daughter loves her artistry as well. When I need a reboot with my favorite and most competent, creative, and kind stylist, it's Cindy every time. Highly Recommended. read more

I've been going to Caryn Cohen for 15+ years - followed her from Di Pietro Todd to Secret Agent and now at Joli Bijou. This new salon is in a great location and I was able to park on the same block (on Sacramento) - and conveniently run some errands on Fillmore St after. She's the absolute best hair stylist in town! She seems to have a magical way with hair that looks as good 6 months later as it does the day I walk out of the salon. I've been through nearly every kind of hair in the couple decades (I like to change things up a lot!). From chin length, A-line bobs, all the way to waist length hair with her - not to mention all the various kinds of bangs. She always cuts exactly to the style I want (I usually show her a few ideas from pinterest of what I'm looking for) and she'll be upfront with you about how the style you want will actually look on your hair before you take the plunge. For example, I have a lot of hair and some cowlicks in the back, so in order to get the shaggy bob I wanted she had to do a bit of an undercut, so she talked me through that before going for it, but then it fell exactly as I wanted, which no other hairdresser has taken the time to figure out my head and it's intricacies for the cut I want. She's incredibly detail oriented which I appreciate and will check how your hair looks for every way you part it or wear it. She also always gives you great tips on how to style it, dry it, etc. I've got a lot of hair and a bit of a wave to my hair, but I've watched her cut all kinds of hair, from thin and stick straight, to thick and super tight curls. She herself has curly hair, which I feel gives her a bit of understanding on how to deal with that. I've also gotten my hair cut with her during the pandemic and she's taking all the precautions very seriously, which gave me piece of mind. Everything was incredibly clean and we wore masks the whole time. Which, I have to say the last haircut I got ended up lasting me a full pandemic year - and people still were complimenting my haircut - 12 months later! I also happened to walking by the salon today and she ended up making a few trims to make my new long curtain bangs she cut a few weeks ago lay right with how I've been styling it. Right there on the sidewalk! Now, that's definitely a stylist who goes the extra mile. If you're looking for a new hair stylist, I highly recommend Caryn. I'd literally trust her with my life! Love Tweetie, the manicurist! I've been to many nail salons throughout San Francisco and she is the first esthetician that I've met that is a perfectionist. She is very delicate with your cuticles so they don't get bruised and is detail oriented with applying and removing gel manicure. I used to get gel manicures and I had to stop because my nails started thinning. After Tweetie, I get them done almost every 3 weeks now because she removes the gel polish very delicately. I bought a Gilt voucher for a gel manicure at the nail salon at Joli Bijou and redeemed it right before the holidays on Dec. 23rd. The salon itself is so quaint and lovely, there were two nail stations at the very front with a great selection of colors. I arrived at my appointment on time at 12:00pm and was out the door by 12:30pm. I thought it was rather quick, but my nails did look great when I left (I did a white gel manicure) The person who worked on my nails was nice, seemed a bit in a rush but I understood the stress before the holidays. Sadly to say, my gel nails only lasted a week and started peeling right before New Years. Not sure if I would go back just yet for a mani/pedi, but I would definitely like to try the salon next time. read more

Kookla is not one of your typical Pac Heights establishments. It's not trendy, overcrowded, or trying to sell you beautiful things that you don't need for way too much money. I have been getting my hair colored at Kookla for 4 years now, and will never stray. Denise is a great colorist - all she does is color, and she is an expert. She uses only the best European dyes and takes her time applying them. Not only does she have a loyal customer base here in SF, she also travels to NY to service her clients there every 6 weeks or so. I look forward to my visits to Kookla - to catch up with Denise, who is uber-cool and wise, read her great selection of magazines, listen to interesting music, and pet her greyhound Remy, who is a fixture in the salon. The difference between going here and to other salons is that this is Denise's place - you are not subject to the colorist-of-the-day or a change in management. I use the Rene Furterer line of hair products - excellent brand. This salon is not at all about selling products, but Denise believes in this line, and I trust her experience and advice. As with most of the women I know, the state of your hair can dictate how you feel about your self-image. Therefore trust is vital when it comes to hair care. I feel lucky to have found Kookla because I trust that I will be taken care of there - and that's why I always come back. read more

Everyone knows, I'm extremely picky when it comes to my nails. I'm notorious for never returning to a salon more than once because I'm not completely satisfied with my signature mani: a stiletto French tip. I've been hard pressed to find a go-to nail salon in the city...so much so that I traveled to SJ on a regular basis to get my nails did. But the nail gods were shining down upon me when I made it to Joli Bijou on the day my Groupon expired, no less. 'Tweety' is amazing. She was warm & cordial. Booking an appointment here for 2 at the same time was a little difficult bc they were going through some staffing changes, but we were finally able to do it. The place is cute and the girls are VERY meticulous. We got gilt city deals for a deluxe pedi, which included a paraffin wax, talk about real pampering, and gel mani. It's been 2 weeks and everything is still looking pristine. Love coming here and then heading to salt and straw for a sweet treat! They are pretty high tech too, allowing for payment via venmo. I'd love to say Georgette is horrible so no one will go to her, but the fact is I'm 43 and far from hip and she made me feel beautiful with an incredible cut. Hands down the best gel mani that I have ever had! The polish lasted more than 2 weeks with zero chips, so I was a very happy customer. The manicurist was kind and unobtrusive. She takes her time and is gentle and meticulous. I used a Groupon since I was a new client, and felt that she gave me the same level of treatment that she would have a full paying customer. The salon environment was cozy. It is located on a quiet street off of Fillmore (plenty of parking nearby). I am still in shock after reading some of these reviews. I just bought a house a half a block away from Kookla and thought it would be a great place to go. I walked in one day last week and was completely IGNORED! I decided that while I was being ignored I'd pet the dog that hangs out in the salon. Finally someone (the owner?) came over to the desk and STILL IGNORED me. In spite of being ignored I was very polite and friendly and told her I was interested in having my hair done and doing something somewhat low maintenance. She told me it was impossible and walked away and never turned back. I seriously stood there in shock because I couldn't believe someone could be so rude. Where do they find customers with this treatment? Maybe they should hang a sign on their door stating they don't need any more customers, as they obviously don't. read more

Tweetie is an Amazing Nail Technician! I really appreciate her attention to details and her gentle demeanor. Georgette Semedo and Denis Helias are the best cutter/stylist and colorist (respectively) in SF. And not necessarily the most expensive. Denise has loyal clients on the east *coast* for crying out loud. Georgette was formerly at Elevation, and Architects and Heroes. It's a long schlep for me from Mountain View to see these two, but so worth it. Denise does slow processing, non toxic color that is incredibly natural looking. She brought my over-highlighted blond hair back to normal, and made it shinier, too. Georgette does perfection with cuts, braids, even taught me to style my hair to bring out its natural curl. But I love her cuts the most. They are so precise that it's easy to make it behave and look the same way every day that it did in the salon. Plus, she's fun as hell to be around. The only downside to this salon is that parking is scarce (it's SF, people) and the sign outside is a little hard to spot the first time. Also, the lighting in the salon can be a little dim for my taste (I don't care for halogen spotlights), but otherwise it's nice and comfortable in there with cool antiques, and Denise's dog hanging out. I have tried many different people for blowouts in the city and Georgette is by far the best. She has done amazing things with my hair. Tweetie was so patient with me (I kept forgetting to tap my fingers so the UV light would stay on to cure the gel), and two weeks later my nails still look incredible. She really took her time to be meticulous, and even though my nails are really short and brittle (pianist here), she made them look beautiful. I have been coloring my blonde hair for 20 years in cities all over the country. No one has ever done such a fabulous job as Denise Helias. I never have roots because Denise colors my hair with lighter and darker colors so it grows out looking very natural. She has long time clients in NYC as well - so to me that is really saying something. My husband always says my hair looks great. Her salon has a really nice vibe - cool use of antiques in its decor. Unfortunately, at Kookla I had my worst haircut experience ever in California (and I've had a few bad experiences over the years!). Even with VERY specific instruction many more inches were cut off than I wanted and even in the wrong places! I work on this side of town and have had a couple of fantastic pedicures here. The hot stone massage is by far, the best touch. They do a great job with the service and I've had no issues at all!
