Very good donuts! When we walked in it was crowded and had a few people in line. They had a good selection of donuts, both in types and amounts of each. After we walked in, a fire truck pulled up, and the lady stopped helping the line to help the firefighters - although I had kids in the car and was in a hurry - it felt very small town, and that somehow added to the appeal. We got a dozen donuts including blueberry cake, devils food, honey dew, buttermilk, Boston cream, banana cream, cinnamon powdered sugar, strawberry cream, and some other one I can't remember the name of. They were all very tasty! The creams were generous, flavorful and a great texture and the powdered toppings were strong and packed on! My typical go-to are blueberry cake and devils food/chocolate cake, and they were just okay, but the rest were absolutely worth trying! Interestingly, they do a baker's dozen (13 not 12) but the 13th donut is chosen from a separate case with options that are different than the regular donut options and at other places would cost more like cinnamon rolls, apple fritters, specialty long johns, etc. we found that fascinating, as I tried to get one as part of my dozen and they said those are the free ones instead. I don't usually eat sugar, so trying donuts on this vacation was a big stretch for me, but these were absolutely worth it! Great Donut shop. Delicious Donuts, and always open. They also have sandwiches and Gyros, but those aren't available 24 hrs every day like the Donuts are. Was it the best donut I've had? No. But was it pretty good? Yes. They have their own parking lot. Pretty big. We were here later at night and it looked like they still had all of flavors left. I'm sure they make so many batches for everything. We've got variety of dozen donuts and finished them within a day. Their glazed was alright. Which is usually my go to for any donut places. My actual favorite was actually the chocolate filled donut. It wasn't too sweet, it was perfect amount of chocolate you need. I do have to say their cinnamon donut was disappointing. I love Jolly Pirate Donuts, and I consider myself extremely fortunate that I currently live only about two minutes away from it. There are a number of things that account for why it's just so darn awesome: 1) It's open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It doesn't matter what time it is: if you need coffee and/or a donut, you know you can come here and they will fix you up. 2) There's an excellent selection of donuts, all of which are delicious. Do you prefer other baked goods like apple fritters? Worry not, they've got those too (and they are AMAZING). 3) Great and quick service. Come in, get your donuts and coffee, grab a lottery ticket, and you're out the door (or sitting at a table, depending on your preference). 4) Easy parking, and easy to get here on Route 60 (very close to exit 15 on I-64 if you're looking to make a quick getaway as well). I think that's a pretty representative summary, though just to reiterate: this place is awesome and it's always open. What better combo can you have than that? I suspect that Jolly Pirate was once a donut chain--but you'd be surprised at how the few remaining restaurants of former chains can be pretty good. Triple X in Lafayette, Indiana comes to mind. But I digress... I had the chicken gyro here and it was pretty good. The chicken wasn't fatty, the tzadziki was tangy, and the pita was fresh and chewy. I also had a dolma (meat and rice wrapped in grape leaves) and it was on point, too. While the baklava looked homemade (and will be tried should I go back), I had to go for the donuts. I had the pumpkin (cake) donut and the raspberry jelly donut. Both were spot on. Not too oily, lots of pumpkin and raspberry flavor, respectively, and well cooked inside. Late at night, while on my way to a motel, I just happened to see the Jolly Pirate Donuts store, and was compelled to stop. Small town donut shops tend to be pretty awesome, and are even better when they are open 24 hours a day. A half dozen donuts later, my girlfriend and I were not disappointed. The shop itself was a little grungy and dimly lit, but that adds to the charm, in my opinion. The staff member who helped us was very friendly, and even at around midnight on a Friday night, there was a wide variety of cake and raised donuts. I demolished a frosted cake donut, a stix donut, and a vanilla creme filled donut within 60 minutes. They were all sublime, especially the creme filled. The cake donuts have the absolute perfect combination of a crispy exterior and a soft, moist interior. The donuts themselves are a bit smaller than what you might get at many places (for example, Dunkin' Donuts), but that just makes it easier to try more varieties, and not to feel like you had too much. If you happen to be driving through Huntington, consider yourself a cake donut fan and do not stop here, you are doing yourself a tremendous disservice. The place is open 24 hours a day. I wish I could savor this gyro more. I have something wrong with my jaw that prohibits me chewing on my left teeth. The pita bread issue doesn't seem as bad. The girls working over in the deli/gyro side act like life is SO terrible every time we come in here and can't even force a smile at you. I work in food service... it's not hard. The girl who took our order got our drinks and touched multiple non-food safe handles with her gloves and then handled our food boxes with bare hands after being on the phone...ew.
