First time coming here and was looking forward to their pizza! Arrived on a Saturday afternoon around 530 and they weren't too busy yet. Snagged a booth and my party placed their order quickly. It was a bit dark inside but the booth was comfortable. I loved the outdoor setup and want to come visit on a cooler day! Food arrived fast and we all enjoyed our orders. The kiddos loved their chicken tenders and fries - the RANCH! Yum! Their mixed spring salad was great and I really enjoyed my guanciale and fig pizza (a little too heavy on the fig jam though so I did remove a lot of it). The others in my party had a pepperoni pizza that was great as well. Absolutely best crust I've had on a pizza in awhile! Overall very good, just nothing spectacular so giving 3 stars. read more

First time visiting Jolly Pumpkin and really enjoyed it. Wish the patio had been open .but in due time. Inside has a fun vibe and I like that you order ag the counter vs waiting for service. That said we still had excellent service in that we were greeted at our table, welcomed in, and plates cleared. Was pleasantly surprised to see that they have a nice NA menu as most breweries do not. They were out of the one I wanted to try, so maybe next time. The burger was amazing. Like truly amazing. Fries were pretty good...overall I liked them but a bit salty even for me. Dipping sauce was fantastic! The pizza was good in that the crust was excellent. I'm not typically a fan of the pizza you get at bars....it's too crispy. This crust though OMG so good!! The flavor of the toppings, however, were lacking. The one we ordered was supposed to have pesto and hot honey on it. I tasted no pesto and barely any hot honey. My wife and I have been enjoying meals and beer at the Dexter Jolly Pumpkin location for years. We enjoy the concept of farm to table. The food is delicious and innovative. The staff is friendly and when we bring others in with kids, the kids are welcomed. Relaxed environment. I personally like to sample the choices of artisan ales (usually sours). All good, but, after going to the restaurant about 6 times in the past couple years only to find it closed for any number of reasons (only open Weds. through Saturday, staff vacation time, or being closed for private events) tonight was probably the last straw. After calling to find out if it was open to the public and getting a response indicating it would be open to the public till 7:00PM, we arrived at 5:45PM and were told we only had 40 minutes. The restaurant was closing early for a private events. Sadly, we left, as did others entering as we were leaving. To add insult to injury I checked the website for this restaurant after getting back home. It still indicated the restaurant was open to the public and closing at 9:00PM. read more

Six years have passed since my last visit to Jolly Pumpkin and Null Brewing and, other than new covers on the booths, not much has changed. And that's a good thing! The team at Jolly is always helpful, friendly, and easy-going. Great food and even better beer served up in a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere...what more could you ask for in a people and dog friendly taproom and outdoor beer garden? This review is for food only as we didn't order drinks tonight. They're 5 stars as far as beer selection goes, so if you're in the mood for a beer or two or three, you're in the right place! The seating/dining area is really nice. Seat yourself at one of many tables or booths, take a gander at the menu, then go up and order at the bar. Having enjoyed beignets in the southern part of the US, we thought trying the cheddar beignets was a good idea. While they aren't bad, they aren't beignets. Cheese balls would be more apropos. There's a lovely, delicate, crisp breading on the outside, but an unexpected soft, runny (not stringy, but like fondue) cheese inside. These cheese balls sit atop shaved parmesan and honey. I was good after one but my husband ate three because he loved them. They're very rich so I'd only order again if it was for a table of 4-5 people. For a main dish we ordered smoked lamb pizza. The chunks of lamb were far too large for a pizza. Some were so big, we took them off and separated them into several pieces and put them back on the pizza. The chef threw cilantro on top, and it laid there loosely, stems and all. At the very least, the stems need to be removed. The sesame seeds should be sprinkled more evenly so as not to make a few bites here and there super crunchy. This pizza is quite salty, but not overwhelmingly so. The crust is good. I wouldn't order this particular pizza again, but I would definitely try one with different toppings. So, overall it was a pretty good experience, and I really like the feel of the place, so I'll return. read more

My husband and I were excited to check out Jolly Pumpkin in Dexter, since we've been plenty of times to the Ann Arbor location, and wanted to check out what was the same/different. This review will primary focus on comparing this location to the Main St. Ann Arbor location. Physical space: This establishment is outfitted into a business park. Initially, we thought we were driving the wrong way, but soon realized it is inside what looks like an office building. One wrong turn to the bathroom and you'll find yourself in a maze of hallways.... But aside from that, I like that they have an indoor and outdoor space. The indoor area is separated into a bar/seating area and an additional, back seating area. The back room is more of a mixed-use space and has different decor. Service/Ordering: Bartenders and waitstaff are friendly. You order at the bar and take your number back to your seat for food to be delivered. Bar/Drinks: Great, as always! The beer menu is similar to Ann Arbor, but I found cocktails to be more limited. Food: The menu is changing more frequently than Ann Arbor, which is welcome since they are prioritizing fresh ingredients. Plates seemed more veggie forward which was nice! I did notice that you can view their menu through their online ordering platform, and you'll see that items are going in and out of stock throughout the day/week. Guys, you need to figure out if you are family friendly or not. We love love to come here with our kids to get a beer and pizza. The outside area is chill for this. They seemed family friendly. Well they aren't. They have a fountain (which after tonight now finally has a sign on it to not touch it) with handles that totally invites little kids to come look at it and touch the taps. We were a large group and yelled at by an older lady and a younger server who is usually nice to our family to not touch it it's a water feature. They could have easily said it in a nice way but they were so foul about it. Put. Up. A. Sign! So tonight as we left they finally had a sign. The older lady with the bob who works here yells or snaps at my kids every time they come and they are playing on any rocks outside. Seriously people put up some signs. We are happy to help our kids follow expectations if they are clearly stated I don't want my kids running wild but they weren't and still got yelled at. They constantly clear your table outside when you come with kids to try and get you to leave faster. They rolled their eyes on any kids playing in the giant walk through barrels they have outside. So don't let the laid back nature of this place fool you. They hate kids and will go out of their way to make it known they hate kids being there with sighs and eye rolling. Used to love coming here, now I'll think twice we didn't feel welcome at all and it seems portly run with no clear management. read more

So there's a world class brewery in an office park outside of Ann Arbor, in the town of Dexter. It specializes in beers that make many people's palates writhe and squirm. And if this isn't odd enough, the brand is tied to gourds with a ribbon of Hawaiian culture that laces through it all. I love it! For me, the beer is five stars all the way! Sure, I have my favorite JP brews, and not all of them fill me with the same delight. But that holds true for all the world class breweries I adore. This was my very first visit to the mother ship. I have popped into the Ann Arbor location a small handful of times. But it is a wonderful experience to be where these beers are made. I will certainly need to return once the pandemic has fully receded, and hopefully they may even have a tour. Regrettably, on this trip, the outdoor patio was being reconstructed. That meant this was my very first time eating indoors, outside of my home, since the pandemic began. It felt very safe, and I totally enjoyed the experience. The beer was the star of the show, as it should be. I had a single hopped sour pale ale, which was delicious! The food was much much better than it needed to be. At least mine was. I had the Fried Chicken Bites from the "Snacks" section of the menu. It had basil, radish, green Szechuan peppercorn, and hot sour cream. The plate was $14 and was more than enough for a meal in and of itself. Care was clearly taken in its preparation. The crust was crisp. The chicken juicy. There was that telltale tingle of green Szechuan peppercorn that lets you know it's present, without being overwhelming. But it was the bright aromatic pop from the whole leaves of basil that really made the plate sing! These really weren't "bites" but more like large strips. I ate them with a knife and fork, not because I enjoy being pretentious with bar food, but as finger food they would have been unwieldy. And if I'm being my totally honest and picky self, I would have preferred the basil in a chiffonade so it would be easier to get a little bit with every mouthful. My daughter ate all of her kids cheeseburger, which came with fries. The patty had a nicely caramelized crust. She ate the whole thing, but to me the taste and the texture of the beef left me lacking. Plus it came with a HUGE seeded bun, which I imagine would be much better for bigger burgers. The kids size, not so much. Service was friendly and enthusiastic. The bartender checked in to make sure I knew the beer I ordered was made in a sour style. And I totally get why they do that, but it makes me weep sad tears in my beautiful beer. How many perfect glasses of beer must JP have to dump because people don't know they've walked into a rare find in the American brewing scene, that just makes sour beers? Pucker up and embrace the tart! Revel in the funk! Be wild. And celebrate the weirdness that this amazingly idiosyncratic brewery resides in such a straight laced place. The stars are for the margherita pizza. The loss of stars is for their wretched vodka, made in-house. My husband sent his back, it smelled like Jack and coke- a common screw up. The new one was just as vile. My vodka and soda tasted like whiskey, it was nasty. Maybe the beer is good, but I don't like beer, I like vodka. The manager said she'd make me a new drink, but it would taste the same, like a burned tire. No thanks, stick to beer, vodka is not your forte. read more

Wow. Had no idea that Jolly Pumpkin existed in Dexter. It's certainly a different type of venue than that of Ann Arbor. We drove through the industrial park, second guessing we were in the right place, but lo and behold - there it was! As it is currently Covid, there were a number of tables and chairs placed outside, but the indoors was just as spacious! Don't think about not ordering the fries, get some always for the table. This is not a place that will be accommodating of large groups. The beer garden used to be a wonderful place to bring kids! But not anymore and we are so sad about it since we came with our little kids all the time. We wanted to seat four adults and four toddlers, but the host was adamant that they could not join two four tops as it was against policy even though many such tables were empty. That seemed strange so we just grabbed two extra chairs and squeezed into a four top. No big deal right?? Wrong. When we tried to order, we learned that the host had shut off our QR code making it impossible to order without any notice whatsoever (really fun with four hungry toddlers). My husband returned the chairs and ate on his knees, which the staff apparently thought was fine. Again we used to love this place but probably will never go again with guests. So sad. read more

Been a JP mug club member for about 15 years. We visited last week (even had some JP swag on). Wanted to eat outdoors. It was pretty empty. I think we counted 8 tables (at least) empty. We were introducing a new companion to JP for the first time. We went to sit down and were quickly told by an employee we couldn't move a chair or table. We hadn't even started to touch a chair to move yet...seemed like a major rule infraction. We had 5 in our party but all open tables were for 4. We were not permitted to even move one chair even though it was a weekday night and mostly empty. We were told we had to squeeze in seating for 4 or eat inside. Because we were hungry and had been here many times we didn't want to disappoint our friend so just decided to head inside. Not one customer in the entire place!! So we sat and ate. Food /drink was good as usual but this not moving a chair policy especially when practically empty seemed ridiculously excessive. If this gets recalibrated we will definitely return for outdoor eats. read more

After trying to find Jolly Pumpkin's Dexter location, I finally just typed 'beer' into the Google machine and found the holy grail- Northern United Liquid Libations, "NULL." This is the umbrella name for Griizzly Peak, Jolly Pumpkin and North Peak Brewing Companies. The roomy, seafoam green curved seating booths (rescued from some Mafia-era club in Chicago) were soft and comfortable. A perfect place to duck in out of the hot sun and try some deicious local beer. If you love craft beer and spirits, this place is a MUST VISIT! First, I gotta tell you how to find Null. It's in an industrial park so don't think you're in the wrong place. Null is located in a build-out of the Jolly Pumpkin and North Peak production brewery. Here, they feature Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales, North Peak Brewing Co., Civilized Spirits, Old Mission Spirits, Nomad Cidery, Bonafide Wine, and more. My wife and I checked them out opening weekend and they had 30 different beers on tap. We both enjoy Saisons so we got a 6-sample flight of different types of Saisons, some I have not even heard of from Jolly Pumpkin. All were delicious and we appreciated tasting the subtleties of the ingredients like hibiscus and rhubarb. If you like sour ales, you'll definitely appreciate Jolly Pumpkin. If not, North Peak has some great versions of traditional style beers. And if you don't like beer, they have hard cider and spirits. Local Michigan snacks were also available. The decor of Null Taphouse is equally as impressive as the drinks. Large pallets with chalkboards of what's on tap hang from the ceiling above the bar. Booths have a 1950s diner appearance. Unique chandeliers hang from above. Custom woodwork and counters are kept clean. You can tell a lot of heart went into designing and building this place. Our bartender was very friendly and helpful. She showed a genuine passion and knowledge of the drinks she poured, sharing her favorites as well. I'm already looking forward to visiting Null again! read more

The food was good and we finished it all, the atmosphere was fun, the music was a little loud. The building is nice inside and the outdoor seating area looks like it would be perfect when weather permits. You seat yourself and order from the counter when you're ready and then someone brings your food to the table. 30 rotating taps from Jolly Pumpkin, North Peak, and the Grizzly Peak production line, along with house-infused spirits and cocktails (have Dan make you a bloody mary, you won't regret it). Light snacks (curry chips! nuts! meat sticks! cheeses!) are available here, but no kitchen. Food trucks on the weekend and menus from local restaurants to order in. Which you will probably end up doing. Because you'll come here thinking you are going to have a drink and then hit the road, and then 4 hours will go by. This place is magical. This an interesting place. Location seems odd in a business park, but inside it's very nice. Nice selection of beers brewed by their group. I believe the sours are brewed somewhere on site. Only downer for me was they really only had one pilsner / lager type beer available - Rambler - which was nice. A bigger selection would have been better. Snacks were good - hummus & pretzels, and Gorgonzola & pitta chips. No food menu as such, although I think they allow you to order in. Service was very good.
