Jomax is a great lunch stop for the drive between Macon and Savannah. I hadn't been there in several years, but I was pleased to find the barbecue to be as tasty as I remembered. My son and I each had a barbecue pork sandwich with sweet potato fries, and we agreed both were top quality. In particular he noted the fries were some of the best he's had - crispy outside, not greasy, right texture inside. Pork had good flavor and didn't lack for pieces of tasty bark. A rustic cabin which fits the BBQ theme well. When you walk in it's not obvious how it works. There are people seated and there is a line of people ordering. Order and find a seat I thought. Wrong. After standing around confused I saw others enter and go right to a table. That cleared up I sat down and was greeted by the sweetest server on the planet. Nothing fake here, Just a genuine sweetheart. Food is good, however brisket is cut too thick for my taste, so next time chopped. Pricing is what you'd expect certainly not cheap. However there were many there dining on delicious BBQ, a sign of a well like popular restaurant. Looking for a nice place for BBQ, we found Jomax BBQ through a local person's recommendation. It was highly recommended as a casual family style restaurant with great BBQ. We had not noticed Jomax BBQ in a general Yelp restaurant search, and did not see any great BBQ recommendation in that nonspecific restaurant search. Food is good. The cheeseburger that I got was on point with all the works. Wasn't fond of the mustard on it but lesson learned it had a little more than I really like to have on there. Fries were nice and crispy which if I get crinkled fries they better be. Good job to the cooks. We also got the pulled pork with 2 sides. Can't do any wrong with how delicious that was. It is odd that they didn't have any hash. Not used to that. Young girl behind the counter running the register was very nice and pleasant. The ladies serving were also friendly enough. We arrived around 2:20 a couple of days before Christmas and they were closing early (at 3). We quickly got our order in but the food was lukewarm and the service was nonexistent. Several items on the menu were not available and we quickly got tired of the staff glaring at us, clearly wanting us to leave. I understand, we all want to get home for the holidays, but if you are open... Be kind and courteous. My family visited here recently and I was shocked at the quality food and service received based on word of mouth from others. On my recent visit, I ordered the hamburger steak meal. My meal was perfect. The waitress kept my glass filled with sweet tea, but it seemed there were customers in the area that did not care for the safety of others. If you're sick/not feeling well, there's no reason for you to be sitting in an eating establishment, putting other people at risk. The food was great. The staff seemed very friendly and welcoming. The place looked clean. Besides the issue with the person that wanted to walk around the room coughing and making throat-clearing noises, I enjoyed my short time there. read more

Jomax's some good points, but there are better BBQ places in the area. This was our second visit to Jomax and probably the last. I order the the rib and chicken combo platter with sweet potato soufflé, Brunswick stew with Texas toast. My wife had pulled pork plate, fried Okra, Brunswick stew and cornbread. I received a large quarter breast with wing attached, unfortunately the chicken was a little dry and not as smoky as I like. The two large ribs were meaty and tender but they had the fatty portion that some restaurants remove attached. Their BBQ sauce is a watery tomato based and has little spice so this did not help. The sweet potato soufflé is very good, sweet and full of pecans and would sub as a nice dessert. The Brunswick stew is watery and has very little of the zesty flavor I like, my wife said she enjoyed it but not great. The fried okra was good. Food 3 - You have to find what they do well. Sweet potato soufflé, ribs..., fried okra would do, with Texas toast. Service - 4.5 They work as a team here to make sure you are well taken care. We had at least three different servers fill our glasses, offer to go cup, etc. Maybe the split all the tips? We were greeted enthusiastically when we walked through the door, and we picked a comfy booth by the window that looked out over a small lake in the distance. It only took a few minutes to make our selections from the standard bbq fare. The hubs and I had pork bbq sandwiches. I opted for the potato wedges, while he chose the baked beans. Our son had chicken fingers and fries, and he out-ordered us all! The chicken fingers were the win, and I liked the fries better than the wedges. But everything was great. We finished with the banana pudding, which was the perfect finish. Service was quick, attentive and very friendly. Lots of people were there for lunch, but it didn't feel crowded or rushed. This BBQ is stellar! The restaurant itself is very quaint and country and full of smiles. Everyone here looks like they are truly enjoying themselves with the staff all smiling, friends exchanging a hello from different tables, and laughter filling the room. We stopped here on our way home from Savannah and it makes the perfect pit stop. You can get to-go orders but it's not necessary because the service is super fast! There's also a gas station right next door incase you need to fill up. We ordered a BLT classic, Texas Burger, BBQ Pork Plate, and Brisket Plate. The BLT was crisp and I was happy to see they didn't skimp out on the bacon! The Texas Burger, I hear from my brother, was delicious. The Pork was delicious as well and tasted real and sweet (but not too sweet)! And the brisket!! The brisket melted in your mouth. Amazing! The fries were also good and I would recommend the potato wedges. In short -- Jomax BBQ is a perfect road stop and a delicious place to dine. read more

We were blazing down the interstate on the way home from a trip. We needed to stop for gas. It was 10:30 in the morning and we didn't eat breakfast so we were hungry and needing something to eat. Behind the gas station a little down the street was this BBQ joint. It's early but a couple cars in the lot so we checked it out. Quite possibly the best BBQ ribs I have ever eaten. Perfect smoke ring, great smoky flavor but not overwhelming, the meat pulled away from the bone but didn't quite fall off, perfect. The sauce was a nice tangy vinegar based one. The owners were great and very talkative and chatted for quite a while. The restaurant is featured in the bonus material on Alton Brown's Feasting on Asphalt. Would have missed this if I didn't stop for gas. BTW: Big Georgia Bull Dogs fans. Uga is rumored to eat there. This made eating the meal tough for Tiger fans. But managed to choke it down anyhow. read more

Although Los Angeles is not the prime capital of Barbeque, we do have some good BBQ eateries such as Bludso's Texas style BBQ & Phillip's BBQ in Leimert Park. However, Jomax still haunts my craving for truly excellent barbeque for what seems to be over 15 years. I visited Savannah after reading "Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil" & had to get to Atlanta's Hartsfield in order to fly back to Los Angeles. About 40 miles out of Savannah on Interstate 16, I spied this large signboard touting the virtues of Jomax BBQ, instructing me on which off-ramp I should exit. I am a fan of BBQ and have eaten in Kansas City & Saint Louis, Missouri; Raleigh & Charlotte, North Carolina; near Little Rock, Arkansas; Amarillo, Texas; Memphis, Tennesee, etc. But for me to remember the taste of the BBQ at Jomax after so many years makes me realize that I had eaten at a very special BBQ specialist. I ordered the pork ribs, but there was so much meat and relatively low amount of fat on the bone, it reminded me of a thick cut, premium porkchop. I have yet to find another BBQ establishment that is so generous. Only a few of these pork ribs are enough to make me full. The pork rib BBQ was not heavily sauced like St. Louis or Memphis style, but it seemed more like a herb/spice rub with a slight bit of acidity from vinegar. My guess is that the rib meat may have been brined in the rub & vinegar since the slow cooked meat was still very moist & flavourfull. The smoking process must also have been for hours since there was a pronounced smoke ring as well as a mellow, deeply infused smokiness in the rib meat itself. The BBQ at Jomax seems more delicate & finely nuanced compared to the other heavily sauced BBQ varieties which have such rich, strong, cloying flavours that mask the complex interplay between the intrinsically good flavours & textures of the meat and of the spicing, type & quality of the smoke. The subtle vinegar also acted as a gastrique to the relative heaviness of the meat & slight bit of fat so that the BBQ retained a savory richness that did not become too leaden & dull. If the exemplary pork ribs at Jomax could be paired with a wine, I would try a Nero d'Avola, Barbera d'Asti, or a Chateauneuf du Pape which is peppery, fruity with dried cherries, blackberries, leather, smoke. Or a heavier beer such as Bock or a citrusy Hefeweizen would be a good palate cleanser to the porky, smokiness of the luxurious meat. I'm sorry to see that there is no Jomax as yet in Los Angeles, but Georgians are lucky to have this culinary jewel within the borders of their Peach State (Which I must say are better than our peaches especially when sold by a country road from a farmer's truck.) Instead of the melon in Prosciutto e Melone, try it with a ripe, juicy Georgia yellow peach. read more

I don't drive thru Metter often, but when I do Jomax's is on my list. And today was one of those days. All I wanted was a simple pork sandwich. Well to my luck, $7.99 special for the jumbo sandwich, side and drink. The pork is some of the best I've had. It does come sauced. I simply love their sauce. Tomato base with probably some significant mustard and spices I will never be told. The bun is slightly toasted to hold up to the meat. A side of slaw and sweet tea to wash it down.
