Simply delicious! Such nice, helpful folks working here, too. Obviously a small town favorite spot with a flurry of customers coming and going and gathering for lunch. The smokehouse out back says this place is legit! I ordered the BBQ sandwich lunch special which comes with a drink and side. The sandwich was heaping with smoked pork, and the fried okra was crunchy goodness. My half sweet/half unsweetened tea was fresh brewed in house and very good. The half rack of ribs were moist, smokey and tasty. Choose between several sauces to accompany your BBQ. I'll certainly return when in the area again! read more

I just had my boyfriend pick up some food here on his way home. Just 2 cheeseburgers and some mac and cheese. Brought it home and we opened it up just to find mold on the top bun of the cheeseburger. not a small amount either. They just buttered over it and toasted it anyways. Literally wtf. read more

My friend and I stopped here for some early dinner on our way from Savannah to Statesboro via the back roads and it did not disappoint for local, simple, but very good BBQ. I had the pork plate and he the BBQ chicken--a huge serving at that of chicken! His side was BBQ baked beans and mine mac 'n' cheese--both also very good, as was the many-layered caramel cake from a bakery up in Portal which they sell here. Service was extremely friendly and prompt as well--I went in the bathroom to wash my hands and by the time I stepped back out our food was ready and up for us. Good iced tea as well. Really, no complaints. I've had probably better BBQ if we wish to get really picky and have been to places with a better variety, but all that said, the food here was great. The "SS" ("sweet sauce" I guess, though not so sweet) was of the two BBQ sauces which come with it the best though both were good. read more

Stopped for lunch at Uncle Shug's bbq. Good home town bbq joint. My husband got the chopped pork plate and I got the fried shrimp. The shrimp comes in fresh and is cleaned and breaded. Batter was light and crumbly. We also bought 15 layer cake and it was good too. Baked by a local bakery. A solid meal in a restaurant that seemed to have lots of local customers. Clean basic bbq joint, sweet tea and friendly staff. read more

I am giving Uncle Shug's a 4-Star review for only one item--Pulled Pork BBQ. I'm a Texan and a Barbecue Judge. Georgia barbecue cafes, joints or restaurants usually do a good job with pork. Other than Fox Brothers in Atlanta, beef brisket is best passed on.The same goes for sausage. Chicken is a little better than acceptable. Uncle Shug's does pulled pork rather well. The side items are passable. Their sauces are pretty good. The facility is neat and clean, the ambiance is rustic and the service is okay. Their prices are reasonable and competitive. This is not a restaurant that I go to often. But, when I do, I am usually satisfied. read more

Our first visit to our new hometown BBQ joint & it won't be our last. Extremely friendly greeting & service by the team there. We split a rib plate & a pork plate & tried various sides including mac & cheese, potato salad, coleslaw & baked beans. The ribs were a true standout - great rub, meaty, tender & fell right off the bone. The baked beans were also unusually good - not overly sweet with a good smoky flavor from the pork. read more

Very disappointed with the change in the BBQ special. It was a favorite of me and my bride every Friday night. The bun, plate, meat and french fries shrank by about a third. Nothing wrong with the taste of the BBQ, but the bun was "different" texture of some sort. read more
