We were blazing down the interstate on the way home from a trip. We needed to stop for gas. It was 10:30 in the morning and we didn't eat breakfast so we were hungry and needing something to eat. Behind the gas station a little down the street was this BBQ joint. It's early but a couple cars in the lot so we checked it out. Quite possibly the best BBQ ribs I have ever eaten. Perfect smoke ring, great smoky flavor but not overwhelming, the meat pulled away from the bone but didn't quite fall off, perfect. The sauce was a nice tangy vinegar based one. The owners were great and very talkative and chatted for quite a while. The restaurant is featured in the bonus material on Alton Brown's Feasting on Asphalt. Would have missed this if I didn't stop for gas. BTW: Big Georgia Bull Dogs fans. Uga is rumored to eat there. This made eating the meal tough for Tiger fans. Although Los Angeles is not the prime capital of Barbeque, we do have some good BBQ eateries such as Bludso's Texas style BBQ & Phillip's BBQ in Leimert Park. However, Jomax still haunts my craving for truly excellent barbeque for what seems to be over 15 years. I visited Savannah after reading "Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil" & had to get to Atlanta's Hartsfield in order to fly back to Los Angeles. About 40 miles out of Savannah on Interstate 16, I spied this large signboard touting the virtues of Jomax BBQ, instructing me on which off-ramp I should exit. I am a fan of BBQ and have eaten in Kansas City & Saint Louis, Missouri; Raleigh & Charlotte, North Carolina; near Little Rock, Arkansas; Amarillo, Texas; Memphis, Tennesee, etc. But for me to remember the taste of the BBQ at Jomax after so many years makes me realize that I had eaten at a very special BBQ specialist. I ordered the pork ribs, but there was so much meat and relatively low amount of fat on the bone, it reminded me of a thick cut, premium porkchop. I have yet to find another BBQ establishment that is so generous. Only a few of these pork ribs are enough to make me full. The pork rib BBQ was not heavily sauced like St. Louis or Memphis style, but it seemed more like a herb/spice rub with a slight bit of acidity from vinegar. My guess is that the rib meat may have been brined in the rub & vinegar since the slow cooked meat was still very moist & flavourfull. The smoking process must also have been for hours since there was a pronounced smoke ring as well as a mellow, deeply infused smokiness in the rib meat itself. The BBQ at Jomax seems more delicate & finely nuanced compared to the other heavily sauced BBQ varieties which have such rich, strong, cloying flavours that mask the complex interplay between the intrinsically good flavours & textures of the meat and of the spicing, type & quality of the smoke. The subtle vinegar also acted as a gastrique to the relative heaviness of the meat & slight bit of fat so that the BBQ retained a savory richness that did not become too leaden & dull. If the exemplary pork ribs at Jomax could be paired with a wine, I would try a Nero d'Avola, Barbera d'Asti, or a Chateauneuf du Pape which is peppery, fruity with dried cherries, blackberries, leather, smoke. Or a heavier beer such as Bock or a citrusy Hefeweizen would be a good palate cleanser to the porky, smokiness of the luxurious meat. I'm sorry to see that there is no Jomax as yet in Los Angeles, but Georgians are lucky to have this culinary jewel within the borders of their Peach State (Which I must say are better than our peaches especially when sold by a country road from a farmer's truck.) Instead of the melon in Prosciutto e Melone, try it with a ripe, juicy Georgia yellow peach. read more

We stopped here for a quick lunch on a Friday drive to St Simons Island. Based on the yelp ratings this seemed like the best bet. The restaurant did not disappoint. The staff was very friendly and we were addressed and seated right away. There was a list of fresh vegetables the waitress told us about in addition to the usual sides on the menu. I ordered the BBQ pork plate with the fresh tomatoes and okra and fried squash. The tomatoes were really stewed but still good. The squash was excellent (but then again what isn't delicious when fried?). The pork was more chopped than shredded or pulled. The sauce was a traditional sweet with a slight spicy taste. The food came out extremely fast so I would recommend this over any of the fast food restaurants nearby if you are just passing through. read more

I came across Jomax as I was scanning yelp on my way to Savannah. It's been a week since I tried Jomax, but I still think about the food. The restaurant is spacious and clean and the food fast and good. I tried the quarter chicken dish which came with two sides. The chicken was smoked with crispy skin and served with a tangy/peppery BBQ sauce. I don't normally like BBQ sauce because I find it too sweet but I kept adding more to my dish. The string beans were fresh and simmered with spare rib meat so it was flavorful without being salty. My favorite was the fried okra which were sliced, battered in cornmeal and fried until very crispy. It was a great meal, and I wish I lived closer. read more

We were traveling to Jekyll Island from Atlanta for a long weekend and were in need of fuel and sustenance at about the halfway point. Jomax BBQ hit the spot! Upon writing this, I had forgotten exactly where it was located, but another yelper (thanks Maria S.) pointed the way: Just north of I-16 at exit 104 in Metter. The restaurant is in a rather charming stand alone farmhouse style building on a small pond (though all seating is inside and I do not recall tables having a view, but no matter, this was just a quick stop on the way). The plates were very generously sized. Some standout menu items were the Brunswick stew, according to my bf, and the pulled pork and beef brisket which we shared. Onion rings were extremely hot and crispy, but really oversized! Ask for the toasted garlic bread vs just Texas toast which was not cooked, just soft white bread. Papa Buck's is closed on Mondays, so Jomax it is. This is a very curious review for me. The unquestionably weakest part of my BBQ meal was - the meat. Not great. I ordered the pork platter and the meat came out underseasoned (nice flavor, but not a lot of it) and underdone - chewy, not tender. I feel like the meat needed another 6 hours in the pit. That's the negative. Here are the positives: * Price - very reasonable, especially for the amount you get. Downright cheap. * Very easy access to I-16. Sadly not signed, so you need to know to head north from Exit 104 and look for the white sign on the left. They're back a bit from the road. Worth it. * Sauce. Delicious. Just enough spice to it that I didn't break into the hot sauce. They only have one sauce, but it's the only one you need. * Sides. The brunswick stew tastes fresh and there's plenty of meat among the tomatoes, potatoes, and corn. The special "field peas" turned out to be marinated beans with spots of ham and greens, also delicious. Then the sweet potato souffle. My goodness, you don't need dessert. Just get that as a side and save it for last. Pecans. I can't. I can't even. It's too good. * Service. Very friendly and personable. Always attentive. So yes, it's very curious to rate a BBQ place four stars when I'm not enamored with the meat. But every single other part of my meal was 5 stars. I just can't be too hard on them. Well to my luck, $7.99 special for the jumbo sandwich, side and drink. The pork is some of the best I've had. It does come sauced. I simply love their sauce. Tomato base with probably some significant mustard and spices I will never be told. The bun is slightly toasted to hold up to the meat. A side of slaw and sweet tea to wash it down. 1st off, their hours are posted wrong on Yelp; they close at 8:30, not at 9. So the 1st time that I went there, they were already closed, but I took 1 of their to go menus with me. So I called in a rushed to go order at 8:15 tonight. I should have looked back at all of the Yelp pics to refresh my memory that it was the baby back ribs that were recommended and looked better. But the girl taking the order was telling me that she recommended the spare ribs and brisket....bad advice. I even said that I had been to their competitor, Papa Buck's, a few nights before and found their brisket to be overcooked and dried out even though I asked for some with fat on it and was leery about trying their's without being able to see it; she swore that their's wasn't. I ordered the combo platter with the spare ribs and sliced brisket (they won't let you have the baby back ribs on the combo, only as a 1/2 slab platter) along with the house-breaded fried squash and frozen pre-breaded fried okra and a small side of their house-breaded onion rings. I asked for the onion rings to be as lightly breaded as possible and for them and the okra to be fried longer so that they were very brown. And of course, when my order came up, I had to ask for them to fry them longer as they were too light. They gave me a requested sample of the cole slaw and potato salad; both taste like your typical commercial mass-produced types that taste like they have preservatives in them, too sweet and I find inedible. I got 2 of their very mini-pecan pies that they don't make, but are made by a local woman that I believe makes all of their desserts (that are out on the counter to grab) and for Papa Bucks; they are just ok, as they seem to have a crust made with margarine and/or oil instead of real butter. I then went to eat my dinner in my vehicle in their parking lot. The ribs were ok, not great, and I do not like their sauce at all, that they put lightly drizzled on the meat and then give you more of on the side....And in the trash the 2 slices of nasty untoasted white bread went....The fried squash was good....I removed much of the breading on the onion rings and okra. I don't care for the seasoning in the breading on the onion rings. I kept trying to eat the sliced brisket, but it was stiff and flavorless due to it being overcooked to the point of being tough and dry like shoe leather....yes, that bad!.....totally inedible! Soooo, I called the restaurant and told the manager that the brisket was so bad that I could not eat it and either wanted a partial refund or something in its place. She finally decided to break their usual rule and gave me some of the baby back ribs which I can tell you are really good. They were juicy and fatty the way I like them. So I would recommend that you ignore the counter help's or waitress' bad advice and go with the baby back ribs here. read more

Judging from what I had, Jomax offers what in my mind is the specialty of Georgia barbecue: completely underwhelming pulled pork on an equally boring hamburger bun, with sauce as the only flavor present. Which is not to say it's not good, just dull. The meat is only there to support the sauce, which to me defeats the purpose of barbecue, which should always be thus: Through the application of low heat and copious time (and maybe a dry rub) you will make me happy and earn my everlasting patronage. And aside from not having a net effect on my disposition, my sandwich was ridiculously small. They offer a medium and a jumbo (defying logic, which requires there to be at least three options for one of them to be "medium".) Not generally considering myself a "jumbo" sort of guy, I went medium and went hungry. My side of baked beans was fine, but with a sweet tea this meal cost about $8. Usually 8 bucks in a BBQ joint leaves me beyond satisfied. Bonus for them and me: my lack of satiety caused me to purchase a lemon bar at the register made by Cotton Patch Bakery. It was amazing. The service was friendly and it's very convenient to the interstate. Why I keep ordering pulled pork sandwiches is a mystery for another day. Stopped on our way for vacation to charge our car, and it was between Jomax and a couple other places. We decided to give it a try. Glad we did! Brisket was yummy. I had the platter with fried okra and sweet potato fries, everything was tasty, including the cornbread. They had some amazing looking cakes, which we didn't try, but definitely were tempting. As hometown as a bbq joint can get, their sweet tea is suh-weet and their food is downright tasty. They served me one of the best bowls of Brunswick stew I've ever had (secret ingridient: potatoes!), and I've had lots to compare to. They had a long list of veggies to choose from, and quite a few meat combinations, too. I had a bite of everyone else's food, and it was all very pleasing. I'd feel comfortable ordering anything on the menu on my next visit. Perhaps one of the most charming aspects of this restaurant is the friendliness of the staff. We stopped here on our way from Atlanta to Savannah - it was right off I-16 and convenient. While I enjoyed my meal here, I'm pretty picky about my BBQ and this was far from the best I'd had. I ordered the pork plate. The meat was shredded really fine and was a bit dry and under-seasoned. I like my pulled pork to be tender and moist. The brunswick stew I had on the side was good and we also had fried squash slices that were really really good. The sauce was tasty with a good level of spiciness. The service was good. They also had a nice selection of baked goods up front from a local bakery. We purchased the peanut brittle and it was really good - light, crispy, just the right amount of sweetness. I liked a lot about this place and might try it again - but obviously the meat is the most important part of a barbecue restaurant and it fell a bit short. I hope that was just a fluke! read more

HOLY SMOKES. This place has food that will make you want to smack your mama. I give it 4 stars for the waitstaff but it could be a 5 if they improved in that area. We stopped here after being famished at a day at Roebling Road and turned to Yelp for guidance to fill our stomach. Jomax popped up and based on the reviews from fellow Yelpers, we decided to try it out. Had the brisket and pulled pork, onion rings, and brunswick stew between the two of us and everything was made perfectly. The BBQ sauce there is a great balance of mild and sweet. A nice little surprise there was the partnership they have with a local bakery--Cotton Patch Bakery from Portal, GA. This review is based on a July 4th lunch. When we walked in at 2pm, the sign on the door stated the would be closing at 3pm. Unfortunately that also affected the items that were available. We ordered baby back ribs with three sides, creamed corn, lima beans, fried squash and cornbread. Our server came back to our table to tell us they were out of baby back ribs and creamed corn. We opted for spare ribs instead. After the first bite of the lima beans and fried squash, we were hooked. We couldn't stop eating either of those. The cornbread was good, moist however we didn't taste any corn kernels in the bread. Unfortunately the reason we stopped here was for ribs and the spare ribs were not very good. They were a little too tough and lacked flavor. The sides were the memorable part of this meal, I don't know if it's worth stopping at this bbq restaurant. Nice local place with decent food. Like many others, we stopped here on a drive down I-16. Super easy in and out, right off the highway. Very nice staff and welcoming atmosphere. Lots of southern charm, including rocking chairs on the porch. Seems popular with local residents, since a lot of people coming in knew each other. The pulled pork was odd. Chopped into very tiny bits, on the dry side, with not really any smoke flavor, on a plain white bun. Doesn't compete with really good places in Atlanta or various other southern cities. But the sauce was excellent. I'd be happy to buy bottles of it. The sides we tried were all fine, although nothing beyond ordinary, including mac & cheese, fried okra, coleslaw and sweet potato fries. In addition to the menu there was a long list of additional specials on a blackboard at the front, mostly vegetables, and several looked good. Glorious aromatic aromas wafting from this BBQ "joint" greeted my first visit. I almost avoided it due to the very large crowd present. I later discovered that it was mostly composed of an after funeral lunch. After ordering a BBQ plate with side salad and baked spud, it appeared in five minutes flat. I did not expect much from the slightly wilted lettuce and voluminous croutons but sprang to life after adding the bleu cheese packet. I love this type of salad. The baked potato exceeded expectations. A huge bottle of Texas Pete sauce added sufficient heat. My server was pleasant, attentive, and efficient. The pork was chopped. I usually prefer pulled. I can't wait to pass through Metter again. I will try the country fare next time. read more

If you are traveling on I-16, food stops are few are far between. We found Jomax on Yelp traveling back home from Hilton Head this past Monday. My wife, daughter, and I all had BBQ pork plates. The pork was tender and had a mild smoke flavor. The sauce had a nice smooth flavor as well. For sides i had the fried okra and squash they were both excellent! The staff was very friendly and the restaurant was very clean. The food came out quick and accurate. On a side note the restrooms were clean as well. I stopped in recently for lunch on a business trip to Atlanta. Metter is about the only place for food between Savannah and Macon, and there aren't many choices that aren't the typical fast food. I ordered my usual bbq pork sandwich with a side of fries. Good prices- a jumbo pork was $5, fries $2. The Q is solid, nice and lean, though I like it with LOTS of smoke... too much for most folks, really. I especially like their sauce, it seems like a combination of ketchup AND mustard based, not too sweet or hot, and you can just catch a taste of molasses... very nice. Servers are fast and friendly.
