Jonathan did a bathroom for us as well as some floor tile. It took a while to see all the problems with the workmanship, but they eventually came to be. Some of it, I have lived with, but the shower has to be completely redone now and its only a few years old. read more

My husband and I were looking to remodel our upstairs master bath and tile our entire downstairs floor. With a job this big, we wanted to get a lot of bids. We got 6 estimates. Jonathan was our last bid because we had 2 neighbors who used him a few years ago and they highly recommended him. He was on time, well dressed with his business shirt, clean cut, and was very polite, he took his shoes off when he entered our home. With the other estimates, the prices were varied. Jonathan didn't ask to see them, he just wanted to know what our vision was. Our ideal master bathroom we wanted was very custom, and Jonathan clearly saw what we envisioned. He sat down at our kitchen table and sketched a drawing and it was exactly what we wanted!! He was confident he could bring the drawing to life for us. After spending over an hour talking about our master bath, we then discussed our downstairs flooring - which was another huge, custom project. We wanted to do natural stone on the floor, but Jonathan convinced us to go with a porcelain tile that looked like a natural stone. He told us to go to a couple stores to look for the specific tile - the other contractors never told us where to go or what to look for. He answered all our questions (for two hours) and we never felt rushed. He never got impatient with us and maintained a calm demeanor and always had a smile. He said he would have an estimate for us in a few days, but to our surprise, we had it in our inbox that evening. His estimate wasn't the most expensive and it wasn't the cheapest. It was right up the middle. After our neighbors recommendation and how he represented himself, my husband and I knew he would be the one we hire. We called him the next morning and we hired him. He said, "great, thank you!" He then proceeded to ask if we wanted to meet him at the tile store to order the tile with the proper quantities and so that we could get his discount on the tile purchase. We met him and he got everything ordered for us and got his discounted price and he offered to deliver it when the tile was ready. He started in the master bath. He protected all our carpet and furnishings, was very OCD in cleanliness. His attention to detail is impeccable, and his talent is undeniable! When he did our floors, he made it very convenient so that we didn't have to leave our home. He made it so that we always had a walkway to each room. After 6 weeks, the job was complete and we couldn't be happier. Not only does Jonathan do ALL the work himself, he was always polite, had a smile on his face and never complained. Jonathan told us at our initial meeting, that he does each job like it is his own home - we have the proof because we LOVE our new remodeled master bath and flooring. We highly recommend Jonathan and will be calling him again when we are ready to remodel our guest bathrooms. I would strongly recommend staying away from Jonathan's Tile and Construction. Jonathan Friedman has a very high opinion of himself and when you meet with him you might buy it but in the long run you'll be very sorry. I hired him because I was under the assumption that he was going to do all the work himself, that he was very competent and that he's the person that people call when they've had a bad installation but that wasn't the case. He had day workers that came in to help which I didn't like but that was the least of my problems. He also does things to make life easier for himself. He put the tile cutter on our front porch ruining our brick porch. Many of the tiles are crooked, he didn't back butter (put mortar on the back of the tiles) the long plank tiles which left us with many hollow sounding tiles, he put in chipped and damaged tiles and he doesn't listen when you ask him to correct something that he did wrong. He mixed the grout incorrectly leaving us with whitish grout instead of brown, which is what I picked. The tile work was below the acceptable standard for tile installation. This isn't just my opinion, I had the Ceramic Tile Institute come and do an inspection and a report which showed he did a poor job. I had the maker of the tile come in to inspect the tile but they said there was nothing wrong with the tile and that it was an installation issue. Run, don't walk, away from Jonathan's Tile and Construction. Jonathan is very arrogant and self-righteous and is not someone you'll want to pay thousands of dollars to only to find out you have to have your job done over again by someone competent. I wound up filing a complaint with the contractors board. I went to arbitration and won a settlement. The reason I'm posting this review isn't revenge, it's to save someone else the aggravation and stress of what you'll have to go through when your job turns out horribly. read more

We were referred to Jonathan from Tile City & Stone in Simi Valley. We wanted to have two upstairs bathrooms tiled (one had cheap old tile and the other was linoleum) He was very prompt to take our call and schedule an estimate. He met with my wife, discussed the project, heard her concerns and was quickly able to offer suggestions and put together a reasonable bid. Once we agreed to the project and terms, he provided us with measurements and quantities to buy in the tile we wanted and we scheduled the project. He predicted he could do the work in 4 days and offered to do it Friday-Monday. Jonathan was prompt, came prepared, and had all necessary tools and supplies ready to do the job. His work was superb. He kept the area as clean as he could and never once did we feel he was rushing it. He spent a considerable amount of time leveling the floor (it needed it) and set the tiles, then went home as they needed time to cure. Next day he grouted, cleaned up the grout, and went to work on the next bathroom while the grout cured. On the last day, he assembled the rest of the room (new toilets, and baseboards), and just like that, it was finished. The final product was exceptional, and overall we were very satisfied with his work. We also will note that we had new bathtubs installed a month earlier and we were concerned they would be scratched up. Didn't happen! He also cleaned up the work area, left very little in the yard, and hauled everything away. Overall, Jonathan is an artist and takes pride in his work. He's honest and forthcoming. We certainly would recommend him and will use him for future projects. read more

My initial impression of Jonathan did not match up with what I experienced and with the end result of the job. Jonathan appeared very knowledgeable, positive, and professional. A plus was that he did "all" the work. I saw him use long levels (6 ft. I believe) to keep the tiles straight. But I didn't hover much (I work from home) to realize that he wasn't using levels to ensure that the top of each tile was level and that the tops of the tiles were level with one another. I only saw him eye it. I can say that having lived on the tile most of the floor has ridges when transitioning from one tile to the next. I immediately noticed the ridges with my bear feet. Also, I can see shadows cast from one tile to the next by the sun in the morning. Finally, the ridges are even more noticeable when sliding furniture with Magic Sliders across the floor. The most pronounced ridges are as tall as a penny or nickle. I should note that I had admittedly poorly poured self-leveling compound on the foundation in one room. Jonathan said that it wouldn't be a problem. He cut the tiles with his wet on my front walkway and many small pieces and chunks landed in my grass and planters. I had to hand comb through the areas to find them. In respect to cutting tiles, Jonathan would cut several tiles along an edge using the same measurement from a single tile. He told me he did this and that usually it isn't a problem. The assumption is that the tile lines on the floor paralleled the wall (which requires the wall construction to be square). This approach burned him on a few tiles as the cut was well short of the wall to accommodate the baseboard overlap. He left these tiles alone. The quarter round we decided to install has covered everything. I had to ask him to relay a tile in prominent spot that hadn't had the spacers properly used. Before the grout was laid I bounced a golf ball across all the tiles looking for a hollow sound (where the tile/thin set/self-leveling/foundation were not solid). I did find over a dozen spots that sounded hollow and we asked him to replace them. He said that the problem was with the foundation/self-leveling compound and/or the Redgard. He did agree to replace a few of the tiles though. All but one Jonathan did, the other he had his sub-contracted grout guy do (so that he could get the experience). The grout guy laid the replacement tile with a ridge the depth of a nickle. The entire job took him five days. By day three I think he realized that he had under-estimated (and thus under-quoted) the job. At that point it seemed to me that he was in a rush to get the job done. He did jokingly say to me on the last day that he believed that he under estimated the job. A haze was left behind from the grouting, which I understand is normal, but after mopping the entire floor with warm water/white vinegar and rinsing with warm water and towel drying, and then steam mopping the entire floor a haze remained. (The steam mop helped; I could see the grout picked up on the mop's pad.) The haze went away after one to two months of normal foot traffic and additional cleaning. When I finished "cleaning" the haze I sealed the grout with two coats. It was then that I found two tiles that were installed with chips in them. One is a full tile in the middle of a room. The other tile has two chips along the cut of the tile, and is placed along the outside edge of a room next to the fireplace brick. The color under the chips blends with the tile color so I'm not feeling hard pressed to ask Jonathan to come back and replace these tiles. I also discovered a number of thin set and grout splashes along the walls. So that I could install the baseboard flush with the wall I had to chisel these spots off the wall. These spots were low enough to the ground that the four inch baseboard covered the marks from chiseling. The thin set and grout was mixed on my custom colored stamped concrete front walkway. A number of splashes fell onto the walkway and were allowed to dry and became hard. I called Jonathan after the the job and asked him to please come back and clean them up. He said he was busy and would call me in a month (by late December 2012). I called him back in February 2013. He said he had forgotten about me, apologized, and was very busy and would need more time; "Please be patient with me." A week later he called me from my front walkway, said that there was no need for me to come out and that he was going to clean off the walkway. He tried pressure washing but that didn't work. Then he proceeded to grind/scrape them off. They did come off, but the colored concrete is distinctively marred where the thin set and grout once was. I've tried to relate my experience and observations with Jonathan's Tile. I have tried to minimize my personal opinions and feelings. As a side note, he laid 20" porcelain tiles (from HD) on a 1/8" grout line using thin set and grout also purchased from HD. read more

In 2012 Johnathans crew installed our kitchen with 16 sq tiles. It looked good but as of today there are no less than 15 tiles that have separated from the floor. Some have broken due to the separation. I have banged on the floor and many have that hollow sound. This has been 8 years since the installation. Totally unacceptable. read more

Jonathan is a hard worker. There were a few setbacks and he never complained. He went out of his way to do little things like move the washer and dryer, put in a new toilet and replace new trim between the tile and wood. He is honest and I could trust him in my house when I wasn't here. His partner also did a great job cutting tiles, they came out perfect. read more
