Unfortunate experience with Susan and Greg at Jones Masonry where they gave my 80-year-old mom a quote (for a project she then gifted me for Christmas) and then through a series of curt, one-line emails I was informed that they changed their service area 45 days later (which included the holiday break) with no communication and will now not do the job. "Hello we no longer work in [my town]" and "he is not available or interested". Their quote technically expired after 30 days, so no issues and wouldn't work with them now anyway, but would have appreciated a more proactive communication and some appreciation for the fact that their service area changed with no notice (and they knew they had an outstanding bid in the area they no no longer serve). For sure they get to take whatever work they want, but my experience was overall not great. read more

Should have placed this review months ago. Due to the heavy storms water was leaking inside out gas fireplace insert. It was determined that the chimney was the source of the leak. After a ton of time between my wife and me going through photos and hours and hours of me sketching up the exact design and dimensions I wanted in Sketchup for our backyard fireplace, the Jones Masonry team more than delivered. They put up with a couple changes along the way. They delivered on service before the job and all the way through it. All I can say is wow!! Our project came out amazing. I was referred to Jones Masonry by another one of his customers. After seeing his work, I contacted Greg Jones (owner). He came out, looked at what we had wanted, and gave us an estimate. Although we were late to sign the contract, he was able to fit us. It was a sigh of relief, as he was booked for months. He estimated the project to be completed in 10-15 day. It was done in approximately 9, well ahead of schedule. As you can see in the pics, the project consisted of an interior wall, exterior wall, walkway, and patio. We had provided Greg with a lot of very old brick, whole and halves.. Since we didn't have enough whole brick for the whole project, Greg recommended assembling them in a "flemish bond" using all the whole and halves. It was much more labor intensive, as it required more cutting and bonding. It was exactly what we wanted for that "historic" look. Greg was there almost everyday to make sure everything was on track, and when he wasn't, his son was there laying the brick himself. The site was cleaned everyday as if they were never there. After the project was done, the entire work area was immaculate, more than what I had ever expected. As far as the workmanship, we could never be happier. Look at the pics for yourself. During the entire 11 months of our home construction, we dealt with a lot of contractors. Greg and his team were by far the most professional and trustworthy. My wife and I wanted to update the face of our very plain looking fireplace with stacked stone veneer and an electric fireplace insert. Greg Jones and company came highly recommended, and now we know why. From start to finish, the team that worked on our project was professional, courteous, and responsive--they answered all of our questions and addressed all of the concerns we had. It is really nice having someone in the trades who is licensed, professional, reliable and has good follow through. I have had plenty of contractors (other trades) during my remodel who were unreliable or poor workmanship; not Jones Masonry. Greg removed our fireplace facing, hearth / mantel that was built by a general contractor who did not build it to code. It was set to be ready for a gas insert, but the general contractor built it out of WOOD! It was a fire hazard as well as not structurally sound. It all had to be removed because the original general contractor failed to hold up his end of the agreement settled at a mediation with the city. We hired Jones Masonry to correct the work of the original contractor and had a great experience. The scope of the work was detailed out in a written estimate. Greg provided me with his schedule and when to expect the project to begin. Cost of the work was clearly stated in his estimate. He converted the "disaster" back into a wood burning fireplace, helped order the facing, sheet rocked and textured the walls to match existing texture, and installed a new damper which had been removed, bringing everything back to code. The project could not have gone smoother from start to finish. I highly recommend Jones Masonry. Greg is very competent at what he does. I found Jones Masonry on YELP, after I had a chimney fire that demolished the top half of my stucco chimney. This required a re-build of the wooden frame & chimney walls, re-fitting of the metal pipe, a complete fabrication of a new metal cap, stucco texturing, paint matching, patching of the cracked fireplace back-wall, as well as repairing a wall inside the house (where the fire department had to cut a hole to ensure that the fire didn't proceed into the house walls). All of the texturing on the wall as well as the stucco looks natural and the paint matching was perfect. Greg was extremely professional, straightforward, and wanted to make sure that I was satisfied with the job. He even provided extra matched paint for the wall and chimney. Jones Masonry was quite busy this season, as they were pretty booked with scheduled jobs when I first inquired, but it was worth the slight wait to have the work done by a true professional who knows chimneys. read more

We found Jones Masonry via Yelp. We needed a large ($10k-15k) brick job done on the front of our home that included doubling the size of our front porch, laying a wide, long walkway across the middle of the yard out to the sidewalk, and building a garden wall around the entire front yard perimeter. We called Jones Masonry and two other places that were all highly rated on Yelp. Greg showed up ON TIME for the estimate (first win). He was very patient with us as we explained our plans to him. He walked us through the various things to consider about our goals that we hadn't thought of. I had several specific questions about the foundation work, re-grading of our porch (it was sloped incorrectly), and how the brick would ultimately be laid. Greg was patient and thoroughly answered all of my questions. After receiving the bid, we selected Jones Masonry as their pricing was competitive and we liked the answers Greg had provided to our specific questions much better than the other estimators that we spoke to. One example: the other guy wanted to to use half-bricks on the porch and lay them on top of some tile that was previously installed on our porch. Jones Masonry told us the tile needed to be removed in order for proper adhesion and recommended full bricks for the best visual quality of the porch step. These subtle yet very important things gave us confidence that Greg and Jones Masonry knew their stuff. They did not disappoint us after the job got started. They were on time each day, work progressed as promised, and the finished product looks amazing. We had some mid-project scope changes and Greg was accommodating and more than fair with the incremental costs associated with our changes. The crew was clean, very respectable, and my wife never felt uncomfortable being home alone with them working in our yard. At one point I had some uncertainty about whether irrigation pipes had been laid under the concrete foundation and Greg was willing to speak to me late in the evening to assure me that they were properly installed as we had agreed upon. After speaking with him I grabbed a shovel to double check and sure enough everything was exactly as he said it was. Nothing I asked for throughout the entire project was forgotten. This is quite an accomplishment in my opinion as I am used to reminding contractors of things over and over (and over) to ensure they get it right. The finished project looks amazing. They ended up using close to 2,000 bricks on the job. The solid concrete foundation for the brick walkway and porch is several inches thick and I bet I could park a semi-truck on it and the brick would not move. We enjoyed getting to know Greg, Matt, and his entire crew and would happily recommend Jones Masonry to our friends, family, and fellow Yelpers. read more

My husband built the structure for a new mailbox but didn't feel like he had the experience to tile it. Greg's son worked our job, along with another of their crew members. They've done a lot of mailboxes and knew exactly how to cut the veneers so the seams were staggered and all edges were finished. Honestly, the mailbox is so nice-looking now that our house (which is badly in need of a paint job) looks dingy in comparison. We especially appreciate that they came back to grout the seams for the mailbox door so it was watertight. Very nice to work with and definitely on our recommended contractors' list. They have a waiting list, so you probably want to call them sooner than later when planning your project. The other thing we learned is that some cities require permits for even a structure as tiny as a mailbox. Something to check on beforehand! read more

Two walls of a 25' x 12' red brick planter collapsed because the original builder did not make the walls thick enough 50 years ago. I found two masons through Yelp. Greg came up with a great idea on how to rebuild the planter that would save money, so he got the job. It took a month to get on the schedule, but many good contractors are busy so no stars deducted. I'm really pleased with their first-rate brick work. Because they were repairing an existing brick walls, they needed to put in extra effort to match the bricks, the pattern, and the mortar. If they did it wrong, it would be really obvious, and this is in the front of the house. They did it right and it looks great. The new planter has drain holes to help prevent future problems. It's a tiered design that solves the stress problem that caused the original to collapse. Greg's son spent some extra effort to build decorative caps on the corner posts, which look great. I postponed writing this review because the new mortar was initially much darker than the old, but they said that it would lighten up and match after a couple of weeks. It's now two weeks later, and the new and old mortar do match quite well now. Next masonry job I have, they get the first call. read more

Greg and his son are the best in the business. We asked them to bid on a job to (1) apply new stone pavers on top of a slab to extend a pool side patio and (2) apply a stacked natural stone to the face of a preconstructed cinder block wall. Right away their experience showed. We had preselected materials and preordered them. Greg insisted that we bring the materials on site to make sure we where happy before he would finalize his bid. In the back of his mind, he new the product was going to require more labor hours and he wanted to show us some alternatives that would be easier on our budget. First, great decision I made was to listen to his advice. He turned us on to another real stone veneer that was perfect and cut the cost by 25% His son is a perfectionist which is who I want for the job. Mat works diligently to ensure that each stone has a good home and always looks at the job from the perspective of the home owner. Mat alerted us to issues that arose from other contractors work, helped us resolve those issues efficiently and economically. Overall you won't find a better stone mason in the area. I am super pleased with Jones Masonry! They did a spectacular job of repairing leaks near my two chimneys on a 1930s home. This home is so old, the gutters are made of redwood, no kidding. They were able to fix some significant cracks in my stucco at the same time, and replace one of my spark arrestors. I got a complete estimate on the sport with the inspection. On the day of repairs, they were on time (early, but waited before ringing my bell, thanks!) got it done quickly and showed me in detail what they had done. A car hit our house, the contractor hired by insurance rebuilt the rock facade in the front. I thought it was ok. Then a very hard rain came and water came through the rebuilt wall, into the house. I decided it was time to hire a real mason. That's how I met Greg Jones. From my first contact, to the end... every interaction was professional, expert and kind. It's him and his wife, she scheduled him to come out the next day. He diagnosed the problem, it was clear is lives and breathes masonry. I received a clear estimate. When we agreed, we set the start date and he and his team arrived exactly on time. Everyday they showed up on time and worked hard all day. They put 3 times more water protection into the rebuilt wall, than had been done before. They also took such care to preserve the rocks... they're 60 years old, can't find any more! Each one was painstakingly cleaned and prepared to be utilized again to match the house. I had a contractor doing electrical work at the same time and that contractor had left an open hole in the stucco, Greg spotted the problem and did a beautiful repair, just because "it's the right thing to do." He kept his promise, on-time and on budget. When you call his office, you may get an answering machine. I would advise, don't be turned off by this. To me, it's better than getting someone who sits around answering the phone all day who doesn't know anything. I always got a call back within an hour, until we set the start date. Then I was given Greg's cell phone number and anytime I called, he answered right away. He is also a clear texter. His wife is very adept at digital document signing and all other aspects that made it easy for me to manage the project remotely. I placed my trust in Greg and he respected it and delivered excellent results. I will hire him again for my next project.
