Jones Store, up at Beasore Meadow (about half an hour above Bass Lake), was everything I hoped and dreamed. (We lived in Bass Lake for 7 years and somehow never came up here when Jones Store was open -- well, today was the day.) It's a wonderful little spot in the high country, next to a beautiful meadow, with friendly, welcoming people and wonderful food. We learned that they have been in business since the 1930s (with an original cash register -- only cash here! No cards or checks)! And the building it's in -- with so much fun charm and decor -- has been there since the 50s. No electricity up here -- everything runs on solar, or generators or (like the colorful old fashioned fridges full of soda, water, and beer) on propane. The folks who run it shared that they go and stock everything for the store themselves: they go to Fresno (a one and a half hour drive each way) and do the shopping and bring the food up here themselves. And when you consider all that work, the prices are very reasonable (even if they would be high for Fresno). A delicious home cooked and extremely flavorful cheeseburger (on Dutch crust bun with grilled onions, tomato and pickles) with potato chips, which two adults can easily share, is $15. A huge piece of homemade pie with ice cream and whipped cream (again, which 2 adults can share), is $10. Hours are hard to find online but a sign there says it's open (summers only) Tues-Sun 10-4 or until the food runs out -- and sometimes it does run out so get there earlyish. There's lots of beautiful outdoor seating with views in every direction. Bodie (the Jones Store dog) might say hello. He was very friendly and chill when we were there. We got quite a few photos of this adorable place, both inside and out, as well as the menu board. Ive been in the food industry for ove 25 years and a ServeSafe instructor. The food was horrible. Burger was dry unseasoned. The service was the worst I have ever seen. Rude AF. I asked what flavor of pies they had and this clown tells me "just pie". WTF does that mean??? What's in the pie???? What if the customer has a allergy. Avoid this place at all costs. If your hungry keep going. read more

Beautiful meadow, and a much appreciated break from the valley heat. Service was friendly and welcoming. My kids had an ice cream cone and ice cream bowls. I had heard people rave about the pie, so I was really excited to have the pie a la mode. They won't tell you what kind of pie it is. My guess is it was canned Bartlett pear or zucchini based on the mealy texture and lack of flavor. The crust was crisp, and the ice cream had a nice vanilla flavor and texture. Perhaps the pie flavor of the day was just off on the day of my visit. Regardless, next time I'd skip the pie and just enjoy a scoop of ice cream. read more

I really wanted to like this place. Made sure we stopped here on our way to start a backpacking trip to try this burger people have raved about. The burger (which was actually two halves of a weird-tasting patty end-to-end on a hoagie roll with SHREDDED cheese on it) tasted very off. I couldn't put my finger on it, but it honestly seemed like a version of a burger you might expect in a foreign country that doesn't see enough Americans to ever fix that problem on their menu - like, "I see what you're going for, but that's not quite it. If you think the bad food is made up for by super friendly service, you're in for more disappointment. The lady at the front seemed annoyed that people were trying to order pie, which the store was sold out of with no signage or mention of the sold-out-of-pie status anywhere. As if that's the customer's problem. She acted like people should just expect the store to be sold out of pie, at lunchtime of all times! The nicest person there was one of the cooks in the back. The store had a small amount of weird random items on the shelves, but it was very unclear if it was even for sale or just decoration. I give it a star for atmosphere because the outdoor seating is along a really beautiful meadow. Otherwise, honestly I'm bummed to say it is not worth the stop in my opinion. read more

Second time coming back, but I actually got a chance to try the food this time. Pro tip: Always come to Jones Store prepared with plenty of cash. Jones Store is a no nonsense type of establishment. There's no arguing or negotiating anything on the menu. It's a real rustic joint with a lot of personality. The food's ready when the food's ready and your only option is to deal. With that said, the food is incredible and well worth the wait. I recommend getting here early but not too early so you can put your order in and get ready to dig in. I ordered a cheeseburger and a slice of pie. The cheeseburger was hands down one of the best that I've had. It comes on a soft potato roll, but kind of long like a French roll and what I'm guessing is cheese baked on top. So it's not quite a cheeseburger bun, but a larger and longer bun. You're basically getting your money's worth. The pie was divine. It was something akin to a religious experience. I received a slice of Blueberry Apple Pie à la mode. It was heavenly. It would knock Dale Cooper's socks off, if you know what I mean. You would be extremely hard pressed to do any better than this. Order your food, sit outside, enjoy the view of Beasore Meadow, then sit back and relax. read more

Rode my motorcycle to jones store today. I have herd so much about the burgers and pie. The burger was very tasty, it was on hoggi roll which for my taste is too much bread. It had tomatoes, pickles, onions no lettuce. Abut 1/2 pound of beef which was more than I can eat. The pie: I asked several times what flavor the pie was?? Her answer we only have two kinds? Pie and no pie. I saw several orders of pie go by, it was heaped wit ice cream and whipped cream! For $10.00 it is a great deal. Next time I will go for the pie and skip the burger. It is a great ride on the motorcycle although the road from bass lake to jones is curvy with many switchbacks. I highly recommend you enjoy this hide away at least once, I know I will be back I can't wait to find out what flavor the pie is. Then the mystery will be solved!!!!!!!! It is rustic but nice. Around 7,000 feet elevation. It has limited seating inside but ample places outside. read more

This place is a dump. Staff is surly and unprofessional, they are out of food even though they still list it on their menu board, and their prices are way out of line. If you order pie, it comes as a mystery, and is buried under piles of whip cream. Beautiful long drive up but best to turn around once you get there and drive somewhere else to enjoy your dinner. This place is the same as it was 22+years ago when I first stopped in. It's a rustic joint nestled in the mountains open during the summer months. First cold snap and they usually end up closing up as the roads close and the snow piles up. When it is open be sure to bring a sweatshirt as it's cooler weather even on a sunny day. Lots of mismatched furniture and tables and more than a few really retro friges make for an eclectic decor. Those retro friges hold a variety of soda in cans and bottles of water. Do yourself a favor and ask what pie is available and be sure to order at least one slice. Also be sure to order a burger/cheeseburger....something about that old flat top griddle in the middle of the sugar pines that just hits the spot. The air is so clean and fresh. The crew working is always super nice and willing to strike up a conversation. You'll usually find a few folks outside sitting around catching up on the news and talking about old times. Jones Store is quickly becoming a place to head towards for some fresh air and good simple food. read more

We had the tri tip cheese burger@ yummy!!) the tri tip was so good n tender and added on top on a nice thick cheese burger. Oh.. And those Amazing Huge rolls.. So happy they are still there! Its honestly worth the drive!! The pie.. OmGoodness! It's a Big portion with ice cream and whipped cream.. People may say it's pricey but honestly.. This is a great little spot to stop if you are up near Beasore Meadows above Bass Lake. We were out today picking Elderberries and Gooseberries and stopped in and had a great lunch. The portions are enormous and it is such a quiet little spot to have a meal. This is pure rustic old-world charm with no frills. Just good old-fashioned cooking. They only take cash so be prepared. This is well worth the trip even if you aren't coming to the mountains to do anything else. read more

Stopped here for lunch on a motorcycle ride, it's like stepping back in time. The first thing you might notice outside is the antique gravity feed gas pump. The way it works is they hand pump fuel from their storage tank into a glass reservoir at the top of the pump. Gravity then takes over as they pump into your vehicle. It's a really interesting process to watch and I heard it's the only certified fuel pump of its kind left in California! Inside they have a small menu including burgers, grilled cheese, and a wonderful tri tip sandwich which I definitely recommend. It's a large sandwich served on perfectly toasted bread with tomato, peppers, onions, and cheddar. Staff is very nice, I heard that the original owner was a WWII fighter pilot. read more

The tri tip was delicious. I wasn't that impressed with the hamburger (we would really have millers burger). The bread was nice & fresh. We didn't get the pie but some friends did and they liked it. I am not new to Beasore, but i am new to this web site. My name is Norty and I go back many years ( 50 plus +) regarding Beasores history. Every thing from Tom Breasore's Original Cabin to many wonderful years with Tom and Hilda. Plus many years with the Black family. I can tell you, you can not wrong any time you visit Beasore . I feel like one of those old farts who should be sitting in front of the old store, which is not there anymore, setting in a chair made of rope and willow. Those may be long gone today. I hope not. Tom Jones taught me how to smoke my first Cigar setting in one of them. I didn't like it, but I wanted to be a man just like Tom. I learned a lot from Tom whether it be from Beasore or the ranch in Coarsgold. I miss the memories of the old ranch and wish I could visit again. I remember very well the two Owes staring back at you from the fire place mantel no mater where you were in the room. Not to many people remember old Henry. He worked at the ranch for Tom + helped him at Beasore for a number of years. He was always charving some type of artifact and hiding it for the kids to find. Those were the days. Searching for chicken eggs or Henrys charvings, it was all fun, a wonderful place to visit and live as a kid. I wish I could do it again.
