We just returned from four nights at East Fork Campground in mid-August. We can't say enough good things about the campground and the campground managers, Dennis and Terry. They were welcoming and assisted promptly with adjusting our reservation so we didn't have to move sites mid-stay. The campsites are well-maintained. Steph and Tatiana scurried about keeping the restrooms spotless and preparing sites for the next campers. They too were very friendly and helpful. The campground has many wonderful sites, some by the creek, others more private on the outer edge, still others with open areas where families and children can play. It's an advantage that about half the sites are first-come-first-served. East Fork Campground is our favorite Eastern Sierras place to camp and this was our third trip. read more

Terri was helpful on the phone when booking the reservation, and actually happened to greet us at our spot as we arrived! She was informative about the campground, and went above and beyond to coordinate/recommended a day of spot change to one that was magnificent and by the creek! Water. Clean flush toilet bathrooms. Quiet campground. A hiking trail that runs along Rock Creek and all the way to the lake (or drive), an easy hiking trail if you have kids who are wanting to meander their way through nature. Great campground minus the hornets! We had so many at our campsite and unfortunately I don't remember which site we stayed at but they were everywhere. I like nature more than the next person & this definitely wasn't my first rodeo camping, however there were so many! They would swarm our food anytime we tried to cook anything. I ended up being stung by one on my temple and ended up swelling pretty bad from it, one antibiotic shot in the butt later all was good but I'd be aware for smaller children or doggos. I was just happy it was me rather than my pup. Park ranger said it was due to the heavy snowfall they had received last winter before the spring, so I can't speak on how it is now just wanted to make everyone aware of how it was last year. Other than that it was a gorgeous campground with lots of hiking and fishing! Happy camping y'all! read more

East Fork Campground. #44, stayed solo this time, 3 nights, had a great stay. I always stay in that loop of the campground... the sites in this are could use more visual separation if possible, but it's not usually crowded up there, so not a huge issue....The camp managers in that loop are really nice, welcoming people. I feel like they have an eye out for me and my family every time I go up there. They also do an amazing job of keeping the grounds and bathrooms clean and operational, and that is no simple task with the amount of campers rolling through there every year. Will of course try to get back up there next year! Bears in the area, keep all food (actually anything with a scent), LOCKED in the bear box--even if you leave for a short bathroom visit--they apparently eat candles, colored pencils, those tumbleweed fire starters...(and of course bags of trash sitting for too long will draw them in)....and they are even curious about bottled water... (evident from the teeth punctures)... They spook off easily so don't be afraid if you see one, just make some noise and they will jiggle their little butts out of there--just be smarter than them. They DON'T seem to eat stoves, wood, chairs, tools or pans though (haha) so I think you are safe to leave those type of things out overnight if it doesn't all fit in bear box. read more

Used this campground as a stopping point at the start of a camping road trip. The camp was fairly crowded could not really notice from our spot.l, which was just across a little dirt road from a small brook that we could hear through the night. That was nice. The restrooms were clean. Can't tell you if they had a shower or not. We weren't there very long. It's a nice stopover/jumping off spot to some of the many fishing locations in the area or while traveling up the eastern Sierra Nevadas. read more

East Fork campground is a welcome respite from camping at lower elevations in the Eastern Sierra where there are no trees! While our boys trips to the area for fishing, horseshoes, drinking beer, cooking dead animals over fire, and more fishing are ably facilitated at those lake-side treeless spots like Crowley and Pleasant Valley reservoir, the wifenkids seem to enjoy a more riparian, forest campsite; hence, we camp up here when I bring the brood. Backing a 19' tent trailer into some of these spots is challenging. Some of the driveways are anything but level, and on one trip, one pull out bed was practically at ground level while the opposite was 6 feet in the air. No matter-- we chocked the wheels really well, lowered the stabilizers, and once you were inside, you wouldn't know we were on a slopes driveway. Rock Creek is pretty, with a beautiful canopy of pines, and lots of alpine wildflowers in season. Nights are cool, and the wind can howl something fierce here. The drive up to the campsite is windy but beautiful. Continue up the road to arrive at Rock Creek lake, Mosquito flats, and an entry to the Ansel Adams wilderness. Elevation is pretty high, so drink lots of water, and watch the littlest campers for signs of altitude sickness. Oh, and at times, there are some local black bears that can be pretty pesky. Lock up the food, and don't keep Fritos in your tent. Trust me on this one. read more

Fantastic little campground. I had wanted to stay closer to Mammoth Lakes, but I was really happy with this spot. I had wanted to stay closer to a lake but it turned out there was less wind here, nicely sheltered by Red Mountain. Firewood available from campsite manager. My site, 30, was nicely sheltered by little Aspens, but a little closer to the entrance many sites have a nice view of Red Mountain. Mammoth Lakes is about a 30-minute, very nice, drive. In some ways maybe better than being closer to town. read more

We had a great experience at East Fork Campground! We have been to many campgrounds across the country and this is one of our favorites. The campground hosts, Terry and Dennis, were amazing! My husband and I were celebrating our 1 year anniversary and they took great care of us. They were so friendly and you can tell they really care about their campers. Decent sized campgrounds. Like the other Yelper mentioned, privacy for those up the hill, not so much for those down by the creek. But if I had to choose, I'd be down by the creek because the shade is so much nicer. Depending on which East Fork campground you get, you might not even have a single tree with shade. Another complaint I had was that the camp site wasn't that level, so make sure you sleep with your feet facing down the hill (or so I'm told to avoid waking up and throwing up). Firewood is available for $5.50 or $6 from your campsite ranger or at Tom's Place (general store out by the 395). Yes, there is cell phone reception out by the main road. Bear boxes are provided, but make sure you use them. I don't think there are bears in this area, but some squirrels might come and nibble on your food while you're gone. Bathrooms are surprisingly clean, but they don't always lock, so make sure you're aware of your surroundings. And a tip for anyone visiting, there's a nice fishing spot we found at the creek towards the East Fork entrance sign. There's some decent-sized trout in shallow water. read more

This place was great for family camping. They have sites close enough together for big camp groups..but still far enough for privacy for smaller groups. We showed up early and asked the ranger which walk up spots were available and he suggested the perfect spot. I shan't reveal the site number .. but it was just right for 4 adults, 2 kids and 2 dogs. Some people dont keep their pets in a leash, but the rangers are pretty good about putting those people in check. Theres a nice trail along the river and they offer firewood at $7 a bundle. The bathrooms are kept clean and there is access to water throughout the campgrounds. There aren't any shower on the grounds, but theres a cool little lodge (rock creek lake resort)not to far away where you can take showers. This was out first time camping as a family and this spot was perfect for what we needed! read more

Great campground. Stayed at #23. Clean restrooms and friendly campground hosts. There is a river that flows by perfect for fishing and kiddie wadding. Store nearby for supplies if needed. No mosquitos observed while camping however the first night it rained and the temperature dropped below freezing. What an adventure for our kids! I would definitely come back again. This campground would have gotten 5 stars but our site had a broken picnic bench seat and older style fire pit. Would not have been an issue but almost got a splinter in my rear and the site beside us had an updated fire pit and new picnic table. When I return we will look into reserving the sites closer to the river which had more pine tree shade. read more

We stayed at east fork campground on labor day weekend. It was one of the best campgrounds I have ever had the pleasure of visiting. Camp manager Jeff Cleveland was very knowledgeable about hikes and fishing. The managers are very courteous. If we needed any info they were happy to help. This campground was amazing, stayed there for 3 nights middle of August and the weather was perfect, rolling clouds and warm in the day time, but cooled off at night enough for a campfire. We stayed on sites 3,4,5,6 with a group of 11 people total and it was perfect for us. Site 6 didn't end up being used because we all fit at the the other 3 sites. Our sites were really well shaded and sites 5 & 6 were first come first serve sites that we got when we arrived. We went on a 6 mile hike round trip one of the mornings that was just up the road and got to see two different lakes along that trail. Dog friendly for the campsite and hike. We saw two bears so be aware and make sure to use all the bear boxes and trash cans. They went right through our campsites. The bathrooms were super close and very clean. No showers though. The camp host came around a few times and even gave us a bag for recycling, but unfortunately we didn't know where to take the recycling bag when we were leaving there was only trash bins. read more

Came here because it was one of a few sites available for the 4th of July weekend. It was a bit farther than i originally wanted to go, but once we got there, we felt like we would have driven twice the distance to get such a perfect site! We were near the creek, such relaxing sounds all day and night, great shade from the tall trees, and we were across the street from the wood purchasing and bathrooms. Totally convenient. While we were on a slight slope, it wasn't enough to complain about. If you decide to come here, and i suggest you do, and you pass through Bishop, stop by the mahogany smoked meats place on the edge of town and pick up their bacon and smoked cheese. You'll be stoked. read more

Well, we returned for the 2015 season and decided to do as the masses do and get a reservation.....although it's not the perfect site, it was nice to not leave at 5am to try and get a site after a 5+ hour drive. The bear infested trip from last year still lingered this year with a bear (cinnamon, as she's called) meandered through our site and ended up at a near by site creating havoc while they were making lunch. Our site this year was right in a heavily populated area vs last year at the far end of the campground.....overall better experience, but still a bit nerve wrecking seeing all the camping neighbors leAving food, coolers, trash, etc out and the hosts doing nothing about it. I believe the hosts are required to speak with EACH camper regarding the bear problem, which these particular hosts did not. It's also alarming at how many people make reservations and don't show up. Site #2 is our all time favorite site and used to be first come first serve.....but now it's reservable. It was not occupied the entire 7 days we were there, yet was reserved! read more

Was a sight for sore eyes having ridden a motorcycle from SF through Yosemite that day. Mid-week -- Early OCT '14 I got pointed here by an old guy (old guy knowledge rules!) on a recent motorcycle trip I was on. I had planned on getting all the way to Onion Valley but couldn't make it that day. Had to laugh as a previous Yelper said this is high elevation. I guess that is true; hadn't thought of that. The entrance is not marked that well so just remember to take a right as soon as you get off the highway (south side). I was there in early Oct. and the weather was beautiful during the day. The temperature dropped considerably and I'm an avid outdoors-man that grew up in AK. It got COLD that night. I have a 18 degree mummy bag, camp hammock, and was wearing two pairs of socks - one wool, probably two and three layers on tops and bottom, beanie ...very cozy till about 330am then COLD! The season will end early for most people at this place. Probably Sept is the end. Bathrooms: Clean Spots: Nice; I had no reservation and drove right into a decent spot...again was very late season. Camp Ground Host: attentive and they did patrol in case bozo's were acting up. Nice couple. Bears: I didn't see them but it might have been too late for them. I did use the bear box for everything. Cost: 22$ is too much for mid week camping; a camp toilet and a spot. If you went for a long weekend you might have to shell out 88$. Honestly, get an Adventure Pass and just go up around the corner. read more

Love this campground. I have camped at East Fork 4 times now. Some of the sites in the center of the loops have no shade, but many sites, especially near the creek, are very shady and nice. You can hear the creek loudly all day and through the night, which we love! There is lots of fishing and hikes leading out of the campground. With a short 10 minute drive, you find yourself at Mosquito Flats trailhead and have the choice of a number of great hikes leading to tremendous views and gorgeous lakes. Beware though...take mosquito repellent! read more

Bear problem: The host mentioned that there were 4 bears coming to the campground including a mom with a cub. I did see a young adult bear that came into our site at least twice. Once while we were there. Saw the same bear walking around the campground almost every day over the 8 days that we were there. I know the bear did get someones chips earlier in the week and the host told me that someone had left a bear box open near the entrance and a bear had a feast last month. The bear that came into my site didn't appear afraid of people. At one point we had to stop our vehicle quickly as we saw it was about to cross the road. It just looked at us, and then proceeded to cross. It is used to people and that can become a problem in the future. Bathrooms: This is the first year that the management company RRM has decided to not turn on the heat. In years past the heater would turn on when the temp got doen to the 40's. This year: you froze in the bathroom. The fee went up $2, so now it's $22 and the heater is turned off. I asked the camp host and she told me it had been off all summer. Bathroom are cleaned daily. Reserved sites: Noticed several reserved sites empty. Figured that those people decided to not show up, it happens every year. Unreserved sites: But did notice that 2 of the first come, first serve sites, were being held. All there was for many hours was a pay slip and a chair. No people. We would have liked one of these sites as we were physically there, but didn't make a fuss and picked another site. Dogs: Saw several dogs off leash, despite that fact that the forest service stipulates that they must be on a leash at all times. This has been going on for the past several years. Forest service: In the past, I would see a forest service person come into camp at least a cupple of times. I guess with all the budget cuts they may not be coming in at all. They certainly could make quite a bit of money on citations and the bear problem would decrease. Road: Part of the road is being repaved currently, so expect some minor delays. They were working on it M-F while we were there. About me... I've been camping at Rock Creek lake for the past 22 years. Not every year, but quite frequently. I've never seen the bear problem this bad. read more

We had the BEST time at east fork. Many of the sites are surrounded by trees and shrubbery, and from our site (#33), we couldn't see anyone else. Rock Creek is gorgeous and my husband caught a large trout there. The bathrooms are extremely clean, especially compared to other campgrounds' bathrooms, and the camp managers are friendly and helpful. We had such an amazing time and can't wait to come back next year! read more

Located near Crowley Lake and Lower Rock Creek. This is the first campground I'd visited in the Eastern Sierras. I was happy with it, for the most part. It was just my husband and I in the site and it was a tight fit. Not sure if we'd have been able to fit a 2nd tent in there. The individual camp sites are packed right on top of one another - but due to the vegetation surrounding the sites you're pretty insulated from your neighbors. You'll still be able to hear them, but at least you won't be able to see them. Unless you're in a site near the creek. There's absolutely no privacy between those sites. But, if you're going with a group of people, I'd recommend reserving a site near the creek. You can buy wood from the camp manager and each site comes with a bear box large enough to fit 1 standard size cooler and 2 Rubbermaid tubs stacked side by side. read more

Stayed here for a weekend of fishing. The lower numbered sites are the best with sites under pines and plenty of shade. Many sites located near the stream and are very nice. The higher numbered sites have less trees but the views are beautiful. Bears do roam through the site occasionally so use the bear proof food lockers to store your food. The restrooms have flush toilets and are clean and well kept. The one downside is that there are no showers however there are some at Rock Creek lodge about a mile or so up the road and is $2 for a 10 minute hot shower. There is also a deli where you can grab a burger and a beer after a day of activity. The campsite is a great jumping off point to Hilton Lakes and Rock Creek Lake as well as Crowley Lake and The village of Mammoth Lakes about 15 miles away. There is a burro pack station up the road at the Rock Creek pack station about a mile or two up towards Mosquito Flats. Overall, this is a great family place to enjoy the great outdoors. read more

This campsite is GREAT! They have everything you could need yet still feel like you're rouging it. The site manager will ride around and deliver your firewood. There is a general store a mile up the road. The hikes are close and relatively easy for most peope that are in healthy shape. The views are incredible. read more

We stayed June 22 through June 26, 2015 they take reservations the campground is huge with shade and a lot of the sites along the creek which are hard to reserve The creek there is amazing and good to fish we also went to other day trips like rock creek lake ,pie in the sky ,a diner with outstanding food and a day hike at the mosquito flats trailhead to several high-altitude Alpine Lakes in the John Muir wilderness The area is breathtaking while camping at any campgrounds along rock Creek be careful and store for all of your food in the bear boxes Bears came into the campground two of the three nights ,one is a large 300 pound bear that the Ranger named cinnamon they do break in the RVs through windows and doors we were a little scared sleeping at night in our tent I had bear spray and huge knife this is truly the wilderness and their home the area is beautiful to enjoy to hike ,camp ,and fish they also rent boats at rock Creek Lake read more

Very high elevation should you be troubled with breathing issues. Park is very tight and sites are close together. One way in can cause traffic back up. Sites down in valley near creek are pretty with trees, however sites away from creek are not as level and the majority are in full sun. Park indicates dump available, but it is a drive back down hill towards French Camp is actually where you empty tanks and can refill water. No cell coverage, minimal coverage back down hill/lower elevation. read more
