I can tell you that this is so true. I have a community of parents that are supporting me and my kids. My kids have a class where they feel like everyone is their friend. My kids have teachers and faculty that understand their strengths and weaknesses and help them grow. And best of all, my kids are learning all this with a Christian perspective. I love hearing about their bible classes and chapels or hear them practice their memory work. I am glad to have made this choice for them!

Fortunately, I had them over a four year period and took them for other classes. Sadly, most have moved on and retired- Gorman, Lynch - others I've lost contact with- the rest- but their legacy lives on. Walk down the E wing and you can see Lynch's closet where he smoked three cigs during our testing sessions. Or the indentation on the lockers from Gorman's golf club. Or you can hear Freyer say 'c'mere sonnnnn' six times so he can yell at you about your polo not being tucked in. Or the obnoxious smell and piss poor lighting of the Dwing. Or the overly bright C wing which had Fowler deal from the deck. Subconsciously, I believe that's why I like playing cards so much...because I got called on so many fucking times in his class especially when I was day dreaming about being in Gorman's class instead of Trig. B wing had Br. Mahoney who is the undisputed lightweight champ of the brothers. Mr Scott had such great enthusiasm for StL that it was a shock to me that I had heard he left. His legacy is one of playing an active role in the community- find a program that he didn't help think of or handle. In 02 the administration decided to erect a moto above the student entrance/exit- Leave as a Leader. I thought it was a bullshit moto...leave as a leader ha! But it didn't dawn on me until I was away for quite awhile and swung in for a visit to see if Gorman was around. I came in as a boy in 98 with a wickedly bad pubic-y mustache and left in 02 as a man...a grizzled man, but a grizzly leader.

Still better than anything my mom cooked. The blocks and train sets....omg. The kids were nice too. I remember "strawberry girl". She didn't say much if anything, but she was nice and often wore a smock with a strawberry on the front. I'm so glad my mom took me here so she could have some "mommy time".' Transitioning from one school to another is never easy and wasn't a decision we took lightly, especially since we left behind some really wonderful people. That said, my son's move to St. Gerald has been seamless--far better than we expected. His teachers, staff, coaches, and Principal Pape have all been incredibly kind and supportive. The families here have been so inviting, and honestly, that's been the very best part. Let's be honest--every Catholic school in Oak Lawn seems to claim financial needs and asks for extra contributions (all the time even when they have surplus funds). But when you add up tuition and fees, the overall cost ends up being about the same year after year. For us, the value at St. Gerald has been clear. All in all, I'm so glad we made the switch. I look forward to seeing my child finish his elementary school years proudly as a Giant. Go Giants!

With that statement out of the way, the reality is that this school is a shade above public school in terms of education quality. The only difference is you get religion and get to wear an uniform. Otherwise, this school is a joke in terms of education. After COVID hit, we realized what they taught there was very basic and our kids were not being intellectually challenged. Parents at St. Gerald are like a high school clique. Our kids came from another Catholic school that closed and one parent commented how all the children that came from said school should be in their own classroom (separate from her precious St. Gerald legacy child). Some parents here think they are Oak Lawn Royalty because they drive a leased Porsche or second hand luxury vehicle. The snobbery really shows but at the same time you have a large portion of Blue Collar parents who are rude and rough around the edges. Any parent with any sort of perceived power thinks they can talk down to you or make your child feel inferior. The review by James B. pretty much sums up St. Gerald. Nothing really has changed from 2014 to 2020/21 except for a new principal. We never really fit in this school. It's pretty much a babysitting Catholic service. Most of these "Catholic" parents never really go to church on Sundays let alone act Catholic.

They've definitely reworked this school, beautiful inside and out. Bunch of additions and modernized stuff they have now. It's still a Dwayne Wade Memorial Museum that I'd remember. Also great place to check out fireworks on the fourth of July. Definitely will come back here, not a fan on how some of the hallways are all white and looking uninspiring.
