It was another fabulous visit at the Metzl practice this year. I do the annual Euflexxa hyaluronic acid injections in my knees which are a series of 3. It keeps me doing my fitness routine of weight training and cardio, and anyone that trains hard knows that when you enjoy fitness, you definitely do not want to stop. It's a pleasure to see the same HSS security guard 2 years in a row who is funny with small talk. Michael, the door greeter and receptionist is very professional and engages with everyone who stops by the practice. I typically arrive early and always enjoy chatting with other patients, some in their 70's & 80's who share what their treatments are like. Stacy, Gisele & Teresa are always a pleasure to see, too. I like laughing when I go to the doctors, and along with Jordan, the ladies keep up the positive vibe. I haven't tried PRP, but have heard from other patients there it is a good option. Dr. Jordan Metzl is great at diagnosing and treating pain. I am a maxillofacial surgeon. Came in with a plantar fasciitis, no history of trauma. Had MRI done and received an ultrasound guided steroid with lidocaine injection and obviously it felt better immediately, but I know he knows his field very well, he found a trigger point right away and did it quickly and painlessly. I recommend Dr. Metzl very highly as a pain specialist for pain anywhere in your body, back knees, shoulder, feet and knees. The Best!!! read more

I have been going to Dr. Metzl for many years, but my latest visit was a nightmare on multiple fronts. I suggest ANY OTHER sports medicine/injury doctor simply because his office was an administrative and operational mess. I waited for just over an hour on a day when there was only one patient when I arrived. Finally, someone guided me to a room where I waited longer and explained that they were not notified by the front desk that I was even there. After the visit, I was charged $835.00 for a visit that took about 10-15 minutes. They refused to provide me with a patient's receipt for services (necessary for insurance) but insisted on payment. When I pressed for this, they said that they file with my insurance as a courtesy. After three weeks, I called again to get the receipt and ended up getting an answering service. Dr Metzl's office called me back and when I explained that I simply wanted my receipt, they gave me yet another number in Long Island. I called that number at least 6-7 times and each time I was disconnected after going through the voice prompts. I called the answering service (the only number listed) again and left a message again -- and his office returned the call. When I explained the problem, I was once again told that they could not produce the receipt, and that I needed to call the Long Island office number, and that they did not have an extension for me to use. I began calling the office in Long Island again and called approximately 8 more times, randomly dialing extensions. Finally, a helpful woman called back and was able to email me the receipt. All told, I made about 20+ calls just to get my patient receipt -- and I had not even gotten started with the insurance! A few days later, I log into my insurance account to see that the insurance benefit payment was made DIRECTLY to Dr. Metz -- after I made full payment at the office visit l!! So frustrating. So now, after all that, after a 15 minute visit that required dozens of calls, I am still awaiting my insurance payment and it's more entangled and mismanaged than I could ever imagine. Dr. Metzl may be a good doctor, but he should take a hard look at his office administrative team. Speaking as a patient/consumer, it has been fraught with all kinds of problems. If you want to avoid insurance and billing problems and be taken into your appointment without waiting for an hour or more -- I strongly -- strongly -- recommend another doctor. read more

Would not recommend to anyone. Extremely long wait (mine was 90 minutes on one visit) for almost no face time, maybe five minutes. I had been to him about three times for the same problem, each time he put out a diagnosis in a few minutes, and referred me off to someone else, not a single one of these panned out to a helpful solution. He also ordered a test for compartment syndrome even though he even said that the symptoms didn't match and he was very certain that compartment was not the issue. The first few times in his office when I went to shake his hand he tried to greet me with a pound... honestly. After seeking out the help of a different doctor who helped prescribe a more specific PT regimen my running is back and well after just two weeks. Overall very negative experience. read more

From the moment I walked into the waiting room at Dr. Metzl's office, I felt relaxed. Great jazz was playing while I filled out some forms and the entire staff was so welcoming! It had been a number of years since my last visit, but now due to an issue that was causing extreme pain, I returned to see him. He is one of the most uplifting people I have ever known possessing a terrific bedside manner, listening to you as the patient, being clear and providing a course of action for healing. True story: I saw this guy like 6 years ago when I was just a young adult (about 20) for a hurt back. Waited a long time. Finally saw Dr. Metzl for about 5 minutes or so. During that 5 minutes, he came across as fake (kept calling me "brother") and ordered a CT scan for my back. He said he knew of a great CT place that he was associated with. As an immature spoiled kid, I went right away without following up with my parents about price. It was $3,000 for a mediocre CT place. Quality aside, that's way too much for a CT scan. They're often $1000ish. Anyways, my mom was pissed. Rightfully pissed. Pissed at me and pissed at him. Yelled at me and left Dr. Metzl a bad review. I never asked her to write the review and I was honestly embarrassed that she had. Whatever, free country. A week or so later, I got a call early in the morning from Dr. Metzl's office. I forget why, but I had called the office a few days earlier to get some information. Anways, I'm stunned to hear that it was actually Dr. Metzl on the phone. My dad is a physician and routine house calls like this are rarely done by the head doctor. I was really impressed for a second. ... I quickly realize that Dr. Metzl had a different agenda... THIS DUDE CALLED ME TO YELL AT ME AND ORDER ME TO TAKE DOWN THE REVIEW THAT MY MOM LEFT!!!! Like what?!?! Crazy egomaniac yelling at some inexperienced kid (I was). I was shocked. He never answered my question either. Who in the hell has such a big ego that they check their reviews religiously. Like legit this dude called me just a few days after my mom had posted it. Dr. Metzl was recommended to me by a colleague when I needed a second opinion regarding an ankle injury. I waited 70 min outside the reception and when I was called in, another 35min in the examination room. There was no apology for the +100 min wait, even thou I have a busy schedule as well. The doctor examined the ankle and came to a conclusion that there is nothing wrong with it. I replied that there definitely is something wrong with it because the pain is ever present in every day life. That caught his attention. He then said that the ankle is loose. He did not compare the ankle to the other ankle (as a baseline) so how does he know whether the looseness of the ankle is due to an injury or something natural. Hopefully I just had a bad experience and he can find a solution to the problem. In that case, this rating will go up from 2 to 5 stars. read more

First off, I absolutely agree with the other reviews about the wait. It is completely insane. Again, if you have a real job, this is even more not the place for you. I got to every appointment early and waited over an hour every single time. Then the nurse would bring me to a room and I would wait another 20 minutes to see the doctor. My first appointment I went in due to severe pain in my knee. Dr Metzl talked to me for a few minutes. Pushed my knee up and down a few times and said I just needed to buy a new foam roller, read his book and do the exercises and I was guaranteed to be better and to come back in a month. The pain increased after following his direction and I was back in 2 weeks. I got an x ray that he said showed swelling so I then got an MRI. Mind you this is equalling 3 trips that could have been 1. After my MRI I came back and Dr Metzl pulled it up, looked at it for approximately 20 seconds and told me nothing at all was wrong and that he had no clue why my pain continued to increase. I left frustrated and confused as to why this big shot doctor could give me no answer but to continue stretching. After talking to a few people I was advised to ask for my MRI and go to another doctor. I called and requested the film and was told they could send me the MRI report from the radiologist. The MRI report stated there was fluid, scarring and impingement in my knee. After consulting with another doctor there is MUCH you can do to relieve the pain and prevent further injury. Now I will be paying to go see another doctor to take care of this. Altogether I was more than upset with my time seeing Dr Metzl. I wasted a ton of time and money and received zero answer and was withheld information on my MRI. PLEASE do not go see this doctor. This is a difficult review for me to write. I like Dr. Metzl as a person. I am very upset with him as a patient. His office stacks up patients with long waits. I had injured my shoulder 10 months ago. After X-Rays, the diagnosis was "an impingement". With PT over the next 8 weeks, the shoulder deteriorated. After an MRI the next diagnosis was a torn rotator cuff. A steroid injection added two weeks to dealing with pain. The next best treatment of choice was a new procedure "Plasma Rich Protein" (PRP) direct injection. After the PRP, it took another two weeks to realize that this treatment was not effective. The key problem is that the PRP was performed without fluoroscopy or ultrasound, a fact I found out after getting a second opinion. The PRP requires total precision, not a short cut due to an over crowded waiting room; or dragging out the entire process with a knee jerk diagnosis A conservative approach to treating an injury makes sense. However, it requires more concentration that the Dr. seems to be able to give. read more

PEOPLE WHO WORK A REAL JOB BEWARE!!! As thorough a doctor he is, please keep in mind that the wait times at this place are absurd. The office books appointments at 8am, and the doctor doesn't even get in until 830, which sends delays all the up the chain. If you book an early appointment thinking you can squeeze it in before work, think again. I had an 815 apt, and was seen finally at 920 for 5 minutes. Medical review: he is a solid doctor who knows his stuff, and for a serious injury may be worth the wait. He did diagnose my problem correctly. However, he clearly doesn't value the patients as he overbooks his schedule trying to make the extra buck. Wait times shouldn't be an hour!!! This isn't the ER! I will probably never return unless I am retired or unemployed. No professional courtesy to the people with normal jobs. read more

I saw Dr. Metzl for follow-up after foot surgery 3 months prior, so there wasn't a lot of diagnosing that he had to do, but I was satisfied with his practice overall. The reception staff were friendly and efficient and I was seen within 15 minutes of my appointment time (rare at any doctor's practice!) Dr. Metzl has been with me through my long battle with Plantar Faciitis. As an avid runner and hopeful Iron Woman, I developed plantar after ignoring pain that developed over a period of time. I went to see Dr. Metzl in agony and he was extremely positive and very calm. His personal knowledge about sports is the reason why I chose Dr. Metzl. He's not just a sports doctor but also competes himself so the advise and medicine that he prescribes, he's personally experienced. After my initial visit with Dr. Metzl he continued to follow up to make sure I was okay. After not getting better, he gave me a cortisone injection in my heel to help with the pain I felt 24/7. As as athlete my entire life, I've never had a cortisone injection but Dr. Metzl made me feel 100% comfortable with it. The last time I saw him about a month ago, I was still working through my exercises and strengthening my heel. Yesterday, I ran 2 miles (at a slow 10.15 pace) but it felt amazing. Dr. Metzl told me to listen to my body and when the time was right I'd be able to try running again. After I wrote a previous review, I got a call from a different doctor, directly from the doctor's personal phone to my personal phone, not from his office. This is highly unusual. I had previously quoted the other doctor (OD), by name, in my review of Dr. Metzl, to the end that Dr. Metzl often doesn't spend enough time evaluating patients such that he sometimes makes a wrong diagnosis. Dr. Metzl said I had femoral anteversion. OD said I did not. I don't know who is correct. That OD said my review caused quite a stir and asked me to modify my review, to remove his name. I did, however while I don't know what was said between them, it came across as if Dr. Metzl was extremely upset and someone was in a precarious position. I actually directly asked OD if someone was in trouble, because the way he was talking to me it sounded like someone was in a load of official trouble. I actually thought through merely commenting I had put someone's career in jeopardy based on how concerned OD was about a mere internet review. Also odd, OD followed up by posting a suspiciously positive review of Dr. Metzl on google maps, their one and only google maps review. I don't know the stakes involved, but me merely quoting OD criticizing Dr. Metzl resulted in a rapid, almost panicked response, from OD himself. It was really weird and in hind-site, far more disconcerting than it was in the moment. Dr. Metzl must monitor his reviews closely and is a bit of an enforcer to ensure his reputation doesn't get tarnished. Otherwise the other doctor wouldn't have called me directly. He wouldn't have posted his one and only google maps review to laud Dr. Metzl - that alone is sketchy. He only could have found out about my review because Dr. Metzl monitors his reviews and immediately contacted OD. Something that seems highly abnormal occurred, and it looks very inappropriate from my external view. I will change this review if I am appropriately corrected about my understanding of what happened. I know based on what happened Dr. Metzl remembers all of this a year later. Since he monitors his reviews, and I have the same cell phone number I had last time I visited him (or he can get it from HSS at large), he is free to call me (himself, not a representative from his office) any time after my normal working hours (7am-4:30pm eastern time), when I have access to my cell phone, or any time on the weekend and explain what was said between him and OD. If applicable, I will modify this review. Below is my previous review: Cannot recommend. I saw him in 2014/2015. He recommended I see a neurologist, though he didn't think my problem was neurological. Just to rule it out really. I did, even got an EMG, and the neurologist said (adamantly) there was nothing wrong with me neurologically. "You do not have a degenerative neurological condition" - almost word for word quotation. AFTER I reported to Dr. Metzl these results, Dr. Metzl said he thought it was neurological. So he first didn't think it was neurological, but had me go to a neurologist, and when the neurologist tell me as emphatically as he could I had nothing neurologically wrong, Dr. Metzl THEN said he thought it was neurological. When I confronted his office about his baseless change of opinion, providing the exact chain of events I state here, there was no acknowledgment of error or inconsistency. I just got a refund of my $40 co-pay. With no notification or explanation of any sort of why I got a refund. The refund clearly suggests my confrontation revealed his negligence - I think he just wanted me to go away. Why give a refund if I didn't have a valid point? read more

i made an appoint for our son, who is a serious high school runner, and have to say was pleased when the office staff said they could fit us in the same day. it was all downhill after that. to make a long story short, after waiting in the office for over an hour dr. metzl came and talked with us about the super bowl (blah, blah, blah) and then asked our son what was wrong, had him stand up and that was it! are you serious? he didn't go over the x-rays with us or even attempt to do a physical examination or allow our son to fully explain what was hurting him. after the brief "exam" dr. metzl then had a 2 step plan: just use my iron-strength training program and buy shoe inserts. we went based on his reputation for sports medicine but we are extremely disappointed. his advice about running or resting was, he hates rest. we will not go for a follow up visit that's for sure read more

He honestly was the worst doctor I've ever been to. He misdiagnosed me because he refused to listen to me. I told him I thought I had illness X and he said no without even looking at it. Now 2 months later after physical therapy for the WRONG diagnosis, I finally got an MRI to confirm that he's an as*hole. He makes you wait for 1 hour for 5 minutes of his disinterested banter. The appointment confirmations go out via email and have three times been given me the wrong time. Honestly, I don't know how he still has a medical license. He refuses to look at you, tell you any options for treatment, or explain anything about what's wrong. Now, because he misdiagnosed me, I have to have surgery. I wouldn't have had to had that if he had actually done his job. If your treatment requires rest and ice, then you will be happy with your treatment from Dr. Metzl. Or, you could just go to a school nurse. He can only treat patients who don't really have anything wrong, but just stressed a ligament running and need to take 2 weeks off. read more

My first appointment with Dr. Metzl was a huge relief because his prescription of fixing my achilles tendonitis was to treat it via exercising vs. sitting on my behind. As an active person this was AMAZING news. Fast forward 1.5 months later and I was back in the office with severe pain in my heel (indicative of plantar fasciitis) and Dr. Metzl wouldn't give me the time of day. He kept trying to walk out the door and kept repeating that "it would be a bumpy road to recovery" without giving me any answers as to what was causing my pain. I explicitly asked him if the pain could be plantar fasciitis since the pain had nothing to do with my achilles heel and tendon. He said no and then ceased to respond to future emails of mine complaining of my pain. He never x-rayed me or even took an MRI. Fast forward two months, I am bedridden and spending $70 on cabs to/from work a day because I can hardly walk with severe plantar fasciitis! Not only did he not diagnose me, his "famous" iron strength workout was the worst possible thing I could've been doing for my heel because of all of the jumping. To summarize: he blew me off, didn't give me the time of day, failed to properly diagnose me, and his recovery plan (his published workout) made my condition much much worse. Don't go to him! I had a really awful experience with Dr. Metzl. After waiting for an hour past my appointment time to see him, he spent maybe 5 minutes with me, gave a half-assed exam, and terrible advice for how to treat my muscle injury. I came in with muscle pain following a particular workout, and he squeezed the muscle once, then asked me to stand on my toes and diagnosed me with "not being strong enough," and "in terrible shape." I'd like to point out that I ran division 1 track for 4 years and only finished this recently, so truth be told I think I'm at least in ok shape. He then said I would be cured BUYING his book and strength classes! Dr Metzl completed my visit by pointing to another woman in the office and told me "I should look like that." Ass. read more

I went to Dr Metzl for a running injury to my knee. He ordered an x-ray which I don't think was necessary since it was a ligament issue. He also took very little time to listen to my symptoms before telling me I needed to get stronger. He then just happened to have a class which he teaches at Equinox the following weekend that I could attend at the cost of a office visit! To charge $125 plus copay for an hour long workout is absurd and should be illegal. Barring the ethical issues with this practice, it also is an easy cross-fit workout that I could do standing on me head. Avoid this doctor. read more

Can't rate him because I never got to see him...I had an appt & was hoping to get there early as a new patient to fillout forms but after waiting 25 min for a bus crosstown I called to say I would be a little late....they were very appreciative of the call....I showed up exactly 5min after my scheduled appt & promptly filled out all forms....then I proceeded to wait & wait....a young man came in after me for an appt 15 min after my scheduled appt....he waited 10 min & was called in....when I questioned the receptionist as to why he was seeing dr. Metzle before me he became flustered and proceeded to tell me that there are other drs here & it shouldn't be much longer (45 at this time) when I pressed that I heard he was seeing dr metzle and once again asked why was this man put in before me, he told me he would find out but he left his post and I never saw him again..in the interium 3 other patients came in behind me all for dr metzle and I thought to myself as a new patient with a longtime injury which I have seen 2 others Drs for and with the NYC 1/2 marathon a week away, I wondered how much time could he spend with me???? I waited 1 full hour before I went to the now new receptionist and told her I had to get back to work....she didn't even say hold on let me see what's going on or nothing, she just got up and walked away from me to talk to the girls in the back....the entire experience left me with a sense that if I'm treated this way as a possible new patient what can I expect once I commit to treatment here.... Needless to say I was very disappointed with the entire process and was hoping he would be the answer to my ongoing issue.... My visit with Dr. Metzel was a huge waste of time and money. He spent no more than 5 min with me. He didn't even examine my knee nor did he listen to me when I discussed my problem. He was extremely arrogant and uncompassionate. He spent half my visit ripping on another doctor who performed my knee surgery. I should have read these yelp reviews before I made my appt. Do not see Dr. Metzl. He does not take the time to sit down and really figure out what is wrong or how you are feeling. In fact, he doesn't really listen to you. He is too rushed and way overbooked. He is one of the worst doctors I've ever been to in my entire life. I went to see him because I was experiencing knee pain while training for a marathon. He told me that it was an IT band problem and that with some stretching, foam rolling and squats I would be fine in several weeks, a month tops. He also told me to buy his book. Ugh. I ate it up and did what he said. I did the exercises religiously but the pain did not get any better. For my second visit, after waiting TWO hours to see him, his assistant said he had ordered an x-ray for me. Without questioning, I went and got the x-ray taken in the lab next door. When I finally got into the room to see him, he did not mention the x-ray. He told me that I had a different ailment (patelo femoral pain syndrome) and that if I kept strengthening and stretching, it would get better. I mentioned the x-ray to him and he said oh, they did that? He looked surprised. He looked at it (I think to make it look like it wasn't a total mistake) and said "yup, you're fine." He confirmed there was no irregular bone growth. Why he was checking for irregular bone growth without my consent is beyond me - it does not sound like a common condition or a priority in treating knee pain. I was still feeling pain a month later, despite doing the exercises and stretching daily. I went to see him a third time (silly me, I should've gone elsewhere at this point). He said with a cortisone shot, all should feel better. So he gave me one. It did not change a thing, and my knee still hurt. I finally came to my senses and went to another doctor for a second opinion. It turns out I pronate when I run and the recurring pain is my knee cap pushing in the wrong direction; it was wearing away my cartilage. Luckily the knee cartilage regenerates and all is well with orthotics, which would've helped me escape months of pain if diagnosed the first time around. I missed the marathon I trained months for thanks to this doctor. Do not see Dr. Metzl. It is a waste of time and money. read more

Not recommended. I saw Dr. Metzl for moderate shoulder pain. After waiting an hour past my scheduled appointment time, he spent five minutes with me, did not conduct a physical examination, and sent me to physical therapy. The physical therapy exacerbated the problem and put me into severe, chronic pain. I called his office and his answering service (who paged him) several times to ask what to do about the pain. He did not ever return my calls. I then went to another doctor who saw me for a good 30 minutes and performed a physical exam, and then diagnosed me with a different injury requiring different treatment. Perhaps Dr. Metzl might have diagnosed me correctly and spared me a good deal of pain if he had spent more time examining me. read more

Went to go see Dr. Metzl after I displaced 4 ribs (confirmed by another doctor and the fact that I went through all for replacements). He walks in, asks why I'm there. I tell him because I displaced 4 ribs and explained how. He promptly responds with 'no you didn't.' It would be one thing if he looked at my x-rays or even did an exam of my ribs or even said something like 'well maybe it's something else'. But no, he just sat that, cut me off and said 'no you didn't'. He proceed to say 'you're coughing like an animal' and did nothing else. read more

Wow! I am really surprised by the low reviews. Dr Metzl is great. Guess what people, if you live in NYC and see a Dr -- THERE WILL BE A WAIT!! Yes I waited 60 minutes for him, Yes I was unhappy doing it, but it's worth it. I would also like more time with him in his office because they are quick appointments, but whenever I ask more questions, he answers them. He doesn't run away from them. I also email him, and he responds, which I really appreciate. read more
