The emergency vet is what happens when the day breaks open. This was my third visit to an emergency vet. I have a small frame of reference. It is not a frame of reference anyone should want. Newburgh was the best of the three, and not by a little. The staff were calm without being clinical, caring, attentive. They moved like people who understood that the dog on the table was, to me at that moment, the whole point of everything. I am grateful they were open. I am grateful they were good. I hope I never see them again, in those circumstances anyway.

This is a prime case of do not believe what you read and hear. This vet guilted me, frightened me and ultimately bullied me and charged me almost $1,000 for a simple checkup, a generic heartworm medication that I have never seen before, a 1-year rabies shot, a 1-year distemper and a lyme that I had no intention of getting until he frightened me so badly that I said yes. He refused to give me an itemized bill until after he did all of the procedures. He then told me that the extra shots for lyme required boosters but it was included in the price but that I would need to come back in 2 weeks. Although I did not want to because I already felt like I was taken advantage of, he said the medication would not work without a booster so I was forced to go. He charged me another $260 on top of the original $750 for the first visit. Then he lied and said he never said it and that I should go look at my receipt. He also told me after the fact that I had to pay in cash if I didn't want to pay a 6% fee on top of the bill. I have had dogs as an adult for 40 years. I have never had such a traumatizing experience where I felt so violated by a veterinarian. It is not just about the money, he did not have water, he did not have treats, and he did not check for certain things that a another vet definitely would have. Our cat got into a fight and wound up with a cut on the side of his nose. It turned into a very…read moreswollen abscess and within an afternoon one of his eyes was almost completely covered by the swelling. Our daughter had the car, so I called Dr. Barbara MacMullan and she came over after she was done working her day job, at a local Vet's office. For $50 she did a full exam, weighed our cat, clipped his nails, examined his ears, eyes and mouth and talked to us at length about the options. We didn't want to lance the abscess because it was so close to the eye, so she prescribed amoxicillin. Two days later our cat was on the mend. We didn't have to take him anywhere! No stress. And a $10 savings from going to the Vet. A Vet who makes house calls is great. A Vet who makes thorough house calls and follows up is amazing. And Dr. MacMullan definitely falls into the latter category. :)

Dr. T has spent her career researching, publishing, and advocating for Shar-Pei health. I love that they let you stay in the room for the exam and participate vs taking my dogs away from me to a place I can't see like they do at some other veterinary clinics. We get them on the table and I stand at their head where they can see me to calm and reassure them, while a tech stands on one side and Dr T on the other for their exam. We love a fear free visit! Additionally, my boy Ruxpin has had eye surgery there (pretty standard for the breed) 4x. He's very fragile medically d/t a greedy breeder who cared more about money than his health. Without Dr. T's expertise in Shar-Pei health, he undoubtedly would have died. People come from all over the US to see her; even one from Dubai! I wouldn't trust anyone else with their health.

Since January 20 23, they've taken in close to 400 local dogs that were either lost or needed placement into new homes due to circumstances beyond their control. The local SPCA is not associated with the ASPCA, but they are a small nonprofit that depends on funding from communities to keep the doors open and keep the employees paid to continue rescuing and saving and placing puppies and dogs into their forever homes.. the new board and all of the employees give a warm welcome to people coming in and take care of all the animals that are in the shelter as if they were their own. It's a beautiful facility and they do different charity events to help. Keep those doors open. The dogs that I adopted are the most perfect pups in the whole wide world and I may be a little bit biased because I love them so much. When my cat died, the Spca helped me with getting him cremated and we're so caring which really warmed my heart.
