Disappointing. Made a detour on my way back around the beltway just to pick up a sandwich. Check ahead of time to make sure they were open but when I arrived doors locked and no note. Lost 20 minutes of my day and no lunch. :(

The gluten free options in grocery stores have grown to many these days but restaurants are still few and far in between. Thankfully Josephine GF is not only gluten free but also friendly towards other dietary restrictions. I especially appreciated the logos on the menu to accommodate those seeking sugar free, dairy free, or vegan options. I'm new to all this as a mom who recently learned my kids have gluten sensitivity and dairy allergy so it's really nice to have options like Josephine GF that makes the dietary restrictions more fun. The place may have been small but the friendly staff and good flavors made a big impact in our gluten free and dairy free journey. This is definitely a place worth visiting again!

Say Fromage waffle wrap (hard boiled egg subbed for bacon)

Josephine's offers unique gluten free waffle wraps- made to order sandwiches- both sweet and savory. They offer cute, small GF bread loaves and a limited number of fresh baked pastries to go as well. We tried the double chocolate cookie which was fantastic (the best GF cookie I've ever had), and I had the Say Fromage waffle wrap, packed with delicious, fresh, organic ingredients, very satisfying. The smoked salmon and the hummus waffle wraps were also superb! Only way to possibly improve the ambiance would be to offer indoor seating, but it's a small shop. Instead they have some market shelves of tasty GF (mostly French, some Italian) pantry options, like dried pastas, bread mixes, salts, and spreads. Easy, free parking right in front. A must try whether or not you are GF! Unique Bethesda take-out lunch option. The owner is charming.

Hass We Can waffle breakfast sandwich

Amazing gluten free breads and waffles. Had the Hass We Can waffle breakfast sandwich and it was amazing. The waffle has a nice crust and chew. The bacon pieces added a nice crunch. Bought 2 mini loafs (ranberry and raisin) and they were nice and warm, and had an amazing chew to them. The madelines here are lovely too, with an orange blossom flavor.

Delicious baked goods. All are gluten free.

Don't you love getting those freshly made waffles on the boardwalk, when you are at the beach? You can add delicious toppings and make them sweet or savory. We'll my friends, no need for a 3 hour drive, just hop on down to Saint Elmo Avenue in Bethesda. Josephine GF recently opened and I had the pleasure to visit with my granddaughters this week. They both opted for the Berry Supreme, which had fresh fruit, whipped cream, and nuts. Don't worry, your waffle toppings can be customized to your taste. I don't know what the secret recipe is, but it is out of this world! My granddaughter said they should win an award for the taste alone. I whole heartedly agree. But, I haven't told you the best part... they are gluten free and are also approved for those who have Celiacs disease. Josephine GF is named for the owners daughter, who needs a gluten free and celiac approved diet. I feel like we discovered a Diamond mine. Each waffle is made fresh as you watch....The owner is as nice as can as can be. There is a bakery case full of brownie blondies and other gluten free baked goods. There are baristas coffees and other packaged snacks that are totally gluten free. I tasted the waffles and they are too die for! I highly recommend Josephine GF and I look forward to trying the savory waffles on my next visit. This will definitely be one of our favorite stops in Bethesda.

One of my friends took us to Josephine's and I did not know what to expect. I was delighted to find so many delicious options. This was the best gluten-free savory waffle I've ever had (the salmon didn't taste weird and fishy like most places I've gone to). They had delicious bread and the staff were so friendly and helpful!! I'm heating up some bread I purchased today to snack on and am planning to come back again for more.

Awesome place! Friendly service, delicious food, very mindful of different kinds of allergies. Will definitely be one of our gluten-free go-to's!

Breakfast Menu as of Feb 2023

Lovely waffle shop hidden away on St Elmo! Their waffles are freshly made in store, and they make each combo right in front of you. Their waffles are gluten free and there's a fun assortment of pantry goodies/snacks for you to peruse while waiting for your order. I happened to swing by to see that they had their breakfast menu available, on top of their usual savory and dessert items. Note that for the breakfast orders, even though it doesn't say so in the menu, you get a complimentary coffee! It was a bit of a wait since it seemed like there was only one person making the orders while another was taking orders. The breakfast waffle I got was perfect - light, crispy and just the right amount of chew. I'll be back to try more of their menu!

I just tried the "hass we can" waffle and cranberry bread and loved both. The bread was lighter and chewier than most gf breads, and all the ingredients in the waffle were fresh and delicious. Service was friendly and accommodating. Will definitely come back!!

Egg, BLT waffle wrap with some spicy delicious dressing

Really good food. Happily Not what I would expect from a gluten-free place with dairy-free options. The person behind the counter was great to work with and the customers are equally friendly. I'm planning on coming back with an entourage when it's a bit warmer. They have rolls and sweet foods that I get to experience as well. I had the waffle with the egg BLT (without the tomato) and it was delicious. The GF waffle is chewy, but not crumbly, which is amazing.

Salmon cream cheese waffle wrap

Wow! This place is a Celiac's dream! I had the salmon and cream cheese savory waffle wrap, and it was amazing. Wonderful food combined with friendly service makes this place a winner!!

Absolutely incredible!!!! An amazing find in Bethesda. I ordered from here twice in one week because it's so good. The owner is so nice and the food is made fresh.

Finally an amazing option for gluten-free breakfast and lunch. Even the little one loves it!

We got a blueberry pop tart, and some raspberry scones, along with a chocolate covered vanilla cupcake. Yummy! The only problem is that Henry's is not just a dessert bakery - the store may appear tiny on the outside, but it's huge on the inside. In addition to the bakery, they got all kinds of candy and other goodies for sale. I gotta stop back in another day and try all the other good stuff inside. Plus, you can tell from the Rick Astley-inspired sign outside, Henry's has a great sense of humor. This is exactly what small business brings to the neighborhood. The small sundaes were huge! Kids could not finish them and at $7ish each hard to beat for the quality! I had an eggnog cupcake. I was not sure it would be good but whatever magic y'all put in it worked great together! The frosting was light and fluffy not too sweet not too bland. And the cake was moist, not crumbly, not heavy just perfect! Had a latte with soymilk because my belly does not care for milk in coffee. Local coffee company supplies the beans. They also have pretty much any kind of candy, pies, and sweets you might need and apparently they cater! Stop in you will not regret it...unless you do not like sweets and then I am sorry.

There were a few seasonal items that captured a spring aesthetic. Everything was packed well and we were out quickly. *Carrot Cake: one of their seasonal offerings and my favorite of the bunch. It was not the moistest cookie, but it tasted the most balanced. There was a subtle sweetness, although I would have loved to see more elements of a traditional carrot cake highlighted, such as raisins or warm spices. *Cherry Scone: reflective of the fleeting cherry blossom season. My party was split on the texture, with some disliking how dense and heavy it tasted. I personally did not find it dry or overly crumbly. The cherry flavor was light, and it colored the dough nicely and paired well with a darker beverage. *Caramel Coconut Chocolate Chip: subtle coconut shavings with barely noticeable caramel. The chocolate chips were by far the most dominant ingredient and flavor. Apparently one of their classic flavors, but it was my least favorite. I was actually more impressed by their seasonal offerings, which is disappointing since those rotate out. Their classics are popular for a reason, but they do not feel refined enough to justify the pricing compared to other bakeries. I would not mind splitting a cookie with a friend, although I would not go out of my way for one.

While I was tempted by these silver dollar-sized beauties of varying alluring colors, I couldn't keep my eyes of their Passion Fruit tart.
