Chile relleno with rice and beans
    Frances M.

I was really excited to try Jose's Famous Salsa Restaurant, but it was a bit of a disappointment. I had a chicken tamale, a spinach artichoke tamale, chile relleno, and sopapillas. The chile relleno was small, but good, and came with rice and beans which were also quite good. The tamales were a huge disappointment. I ate the spinach one because it was okay, but I took one bite of the chicken tamale, got a big chunk of dry stringy chicken, and once I could finally swallow it, didn't take another bite. I took it home and doctored it up a bit and it was all right then, but I would definitely never order it again. Everything at the salsa bar was great, though, and the sopapillas were wonderful. There were fruit flies everywhere making every bite a challenge. They had live plants in the window and no fly strips anywhere to be seen. My friend (who ordered enchiladas which for too salty for him to finish), bought a $9 glass of wine which he had to pick five fruit flies out of during the course of the meal. This is on top of the constant waving the flies away from our food and faces. He mentioned it to an employee, who seemed pretty apathetic. We get it. It's not her responsibility. It was just an overall disappointing experience.

COVID safety is out the window here. Staff wearing masks with nose hanging out or pulled completely down and then walking to other side of bar to drink. Patrons walking around with no mask though it is the current guideline and then I see bartender put fresh drinks for my table next to an unmasked bar patron before they were served to my table. Salsa bar has no sneeze guard, but this is the only place to get salsa for your chips. The bartenders do not know how to pour a beer. We ordered a porter and a cream ale. The porter had a quarter inch head. The cream ale, no head--no cream on the cream ale. Worst tamales ever! The frozen tamales at Sequim Costco are better than what I ate here. I love tamales, not these. Spicy chorizo, overcooked and bland. The spinach, not as bad because the cream cheese added some moisture. They took the tamales out of the husk and just dumped them on a too big plate. At least if they had left the corn husk on the plate it would have been more presentable. There are a lot of great restaurants on the peninsula. This is not one of them I am sad to say.

Holy shit. We stumbled upon this one. Took a wrong turn off Kitchen-Dick and never looked back. It's rare that a hole in the wall is actually a gourmet venue but Jose lived up to its famous status. Salsa: great! However, 3/4 of my party thought it was as too hot. Not me. Delicious Service: Exceptional. Dudes/Dudettes...the staff is amazing! Beans: I think they do pinto as the standard. Ask for refried like I did. A bit soupy but oh so good! Salsa Bar: one of THE best in Washington

This is a "naked" Al pastor burrito.!!!

So here is this, I am impressed, the salsa is great, just the "mild" I wanted to see what it does. The burrito is out of this world, the flavors are exploding in my mouth, then the "mild" salsa comes in and enhances and bring more of the flavors out! This place is a must!! Come for the food, and enjoy the drinks also!

Good Latin music playing, helps to keep the vibes positive, very colorful with parrots and art as well. The food is VERY fresh and VERY good. Chips and tortillas came out steaming hot, I love that. You can taste the difference. I tried Sergio's platter which has many items (carne asada chile relleno, taquitos, enchilada), as well as some carnitas, all of which was delicious. Service was efficient and very friendly. Nice people who work here. We got everything pretty fast and we were checked on often.

My wife and I arrived just as the restaurant was closing. The last guests were finishing up, chairs were being moved, and the staff was preparing to head home after a long day. We offered to return another time, but instead were greeted with warmth and generosity that exceeded all expectations. From the moment we walked in, we felt less like customers and more like honored guests. The owners' pride in their craft was unmistakable. Despite closing time, they graciously prepared a full meal and cared for us with a level of hospitality that was genuinely moving. While we waited, we took in an atmosphere that transported us to Mexico. A large map of the country covered one wall, highlighting cities and regions rich in history and culture. As aromas of freshly prepared food filled the air, we found ourselves planning future travels through Mexico. The setting, anticipation, and sense of welcome combined into something memorable. Then came the food. The Carne Asada plate was outstanding. The beef was perfectly grilled--tender, deeply flavorful, and expertly seasoned. Every element felt purposeful and balanced, proving how skill and care can elevate simple ingredients into something remarkable. And then there were the churros. Perfectly crisp on the outside, light and airy within, and dusted with just the right amount of cinnamon sugar, they were among the best desserts I have ever had. Every bite was warm, comforting, and unforgettable. Even the smallest details reflected the restaurant's commitment to hospitality. Our waitress was attentive and kind, and an ice-cold Coca-Cola served in a classic glass bottle added an authentic touch to the experience. Many restaurants pursue excellence through technique and presentation. What this place achieves is rarer: outstanding food paired with genuine human kindness. The flavors were unforgettable, but it was the generosity, warmth, and heart of the people behind them that made this one of the most memorable dining experiences my wife and I have shared. If you're alooking for authentic Mexican cuisine crafted with care and served by people who truly love what they do, this restaurant is extraordinary.
