This is hands down the best record store in Dallas. It's HUGE! They have thousands of vinyl records and cds. They have a move section, book section and a cassette section. I went down to Josey records to bump a few albums off, under the impression I'd be impressed . Upon arrival the guys we're extremely eager to check my various vintage vinyl LPs... I was amazed at the miles of aisles and endless records they had. I browsed the store and became ecstatic as I seen some of the same LP's I brought in for sale..... The prices were inspiring and fair on the floor. Posters? They got the best.... T=shirts ? Badass, like a skunk fart. One of the guys came over and said "we have an offer for your classics, let's go check the numbers..... " I brought around 35 45 LPs and 20 78 LPs 10 box sets not a scratch on them..we're talking Hank Williams, Billy Idol, John Denver Randy Perry signed.... so the suspense was palpable....... The record guru said we can go as high as $3.05 cents....... and he watched for my reply...... I said WHAT ? He said yes.... 3 dollars and five cents.... cash.... So in closing if you need badass stuff, Josey Records has the finest Tees and posters, Texas Jam or Q 102 bumper stickers, in the land, If you need to sell your albums ....... my suggestion is to do so before you hit Josey Records cuz they gon git you...... I thought I had explored the best record stores the DFW area had to offer. I was confident in my ability to plan a Saturday morning of record-buying and eating lunch at whatever was around the corner from my vinyl destinations of choice. I knew I could take a box of records I was done with to point A, eat lunch at point B and then go about life with a full stomach and a full heart knowing I was now the proud owner of records no one should ever admit to owning in public. I had no idea how wrong I was. Josey Records demolished my preconceived notions for what a local record store could be, and even though I still have no idea where to eat at after coming here, it has effortlessly claimed the coveted spot as my favorite place to buy records in the DFW area. Josey Records is a massive building of vinyl, CDs, books, movies, turntables, bliss, impulse purchases, happiness, t-shirts and smile-inducing joy. You would not guess that from the parking lot that resembles some demigod's pothole collection, but after you navigate the literal ups and downs around the storefront, you are in for an experience that demands a minimum of 45 minutes, and a maximum time-limit that numbers cannot calculate. Take your favorite Half-Price Books, double it in size, make it smell tolerable and you have a good idea of what to expect here. Aisles of records stretch before you resembling what I imagine the fabled Library of Alexandria looked like before it burned down. No, it does not span into the cosmos like Amoeba in California, but Josey Records does something that a lot of record stores could benefit from: it uses the space they're in wisely. More than two people can stand across from each other in an aisle here! You will not find yourself wishing for a traffic guard guiding shoppers as you browse the genres on offer because there is room to breathe! You'll find listening stations off to the right, books and movies to the left, and rows upon rows of new and used records broken down by genre. The staff here know what's up, even curating special sections for MoFi releases and imports behind glass cabinets that make my wallet weep with anticipation knowing that one day, at least something in there will be mine. And actually, I should probably clarify that last statement by saying prices here, to me, are very fair. That even extends into selling records. A box of records I turned in was documented, collected and turned around for money to spend here in no time. Did I buy any of the 33 1/3 books I was missing from my collection? Did I purchase a blind box Eddie of Iron Maiden fame for my desk at the office? Did I briefly consider buying all six copies of "Mr & Mrs. Smith" on DVD like some sort of performance artist buffoon? Of course not; I bought more records, silently thanking the store for taking the time to break down "metal" from "punk," allowing to effortlessly score a Suicide album I did not know existed mere feet from where the Megadeth records were (though sadly not a copy of "Th1rt3en," an album so good that I will tolerate the absolutely stupid spelling of it). Add in a punch card for shoppers who pick up used items, a staff that could not be friendlier and a general atmosphere of laid-back fun, and Josey Records is the only record store in town I now consider venturing out to... even if I don't know where lunch will be after I visit. Still, the money I would have spent on lunch can better be spent on old blues albums, so it all works out. read more

Really nice store, it's cool that record stores still exist. But dont sell them your records. I came in with 5 milk crates of records. I spent hours looking up resale values for all of them prior to bringing them here, when I spoke to them on the phone they said they offer a buck or so for the common stuff from the 80s and 90s and 1/3 of resale value for anything collectible. So I loaded up all of these records and brought them in, and 5 minutes later they offered me $100 for all of them after they pulled them out of the organized bins I had them in, and moved them all around, and didnt actually look at the value of any of it. I wasn't expecting resale value, obviously they need to make a profit, I was expecting maybe 25% of resale value...they didnt even come close. I'm a business owner, I understand profit margins and overhead costs, I understand there would be shelf time and staffing costs before they saw any profit on my records.. But if you're reading this review right now considering taking some old maybe nostalgic or sentimental record collection to them...don't let them rip you off. read more

Dallas seems to be on an upswing when it comes to vinyl records. As of late, there has been huge buzz surrounding record stores popping up in the city, but none like Josey Records. They sure did live up to the hype. I attended their soft opening last weekend, and for crate - diggers like my boyfriend and myself , it is an absolute wonderland. Rows upon rows of vinyl records await you, organized by genre, and alphabetized. And you will lose yourself in the $1-2 dollar bin if you are not careful! There is also a sizable section of 45's, for those of you who are into that. They have awesome artwork on the walls, and a small section of books for you to peruse, as well. The listening stations are legit, too. They have multiple ones, so it is unlikely that you will have to battle it out with someone to use one. The staff is super helpful and knowledgeable, so make use of them. You can hang out in any of the available lounge areas, complete with comfy chairs and coffee tables, so you can examine your potential purchases. It really is a vinyl nerd's dream come true. I am so happy to have a place to buy records that has such a large (and growing) selection, with prices that are extremely reasonable. I will be frequenting Josey Records as much as I can! read more

Dope place! Nothing but good vibes here, staff is friendly and they always have something cool playing. They always have an arrangement of art, which is usually music related. It's a cool place to hangout in and dig for records. Although, they are bit over priced, I don't mind supporting them. Every time I'm in Dallas for a gig I always stop by. (DJ From Houston) I always usually find some gems. They also support local artist as well and carry battle records! (for those scratch djs out there). They also have an awesome rewards program if you spend a certain amount they'll give you a discount. I've had a chance to meet one of the Owners and he was really friendly and laid back. A bit over-picked and overpriced. I agree with other reviews that the "New Arrivals" section is your best bet to find desirable records ($5-30 price range). They list the month & year when the record came into the shop on the price tag, and unsurprisingly most of the ones I snagged had been in the shop for 1-2 months. They have a decent selection of new vinyl, but digging through the used vinyl felt like a waste of time because in the over-picked rock section, the selection for more popular artists were mostly several copies of unpopular albums (but that's often the case at a lot of stores these days). The "Collectables" section had a small selection of popular albums but they were a bit pricy compared to the actual worth. They had a copy of Introducing the Beatles for $40 which seemed like a suspiciously low price for the exact pressing they had ($100-150 value according to various websites). After throughly examining the record, I wasn't 100% sure if it was real or a bootleg (after all, that album is one of the most bootlegged albums ever) but the sales associate told me his manager had a pretty good eye for bootlegs. Ultimately, I stuck with my gut and passed on the questionable album. I already had a copy of it anyway; it's a little beat up but at least I know it's not a bootleg. My boyfriend liked the cassette selection since it had a lot of tapes for his music taste (yacht rock/80s/70s) and they were fairly cheap (probably since the trending cassette hype amongst younger generations like myself hasn't reached the same level as vinyl yet.) Overall, this place feels like they're more geared toward consumers who are beginning to build a library, not avid collectors. read more

Received a defective CD. They said it was really strange that it defective because it was new. Aside from implying I was lying, it was really strange how someone who sells CDs thinks there's no such thing as a defective CD. They offered me 20% off or return it for a refund. I accepted the 20% refund. I paid $26.00. 20% of $26.00 is $5.20, but I received $4.20, which is 15%. When I explained that to them, then they told me they meant 20% of the cost of the CD only. And then they told me they should have explained that, but they still didn't refund me the difference. Customer service was a broken record. No matter what I said, they just said the same thing over and over again. I have many, many CDs, so I've purchased CDs from many sellers. This one is one of the worst. That was the first and last time I buy anything from Josey Records. read more

The have a great selection on new vinyl from current and classic favorites as well as a massive selection of used vinyl. The pricing is very reasonable too; most pricing is less than Half Priced Books these days. They have a listening station too, so you can sample the records; they have books, board games, t-shirts, memorabilia..just everything a music lover could want. Highly recommended for the devoted vinyl collector or the average music hobbyist. My first I came totally unprepared and found myself immersed at this place for 2 hours. Being a huge fan of music I came in as a blank canvas looking to expand my vinyl collection. They totally have a large selection of vinyl encompassing many different genres. CD's are also available! I need to revisit because I ran out of time to check the huge $1&$2 sections located at the back of the store. I would also recommend becuase if you're looking for a current artist, you can expect to find multiple different albums in stock as opposed to other vinyl stores sometimes limiting themselves to just one body of work from that artist and in many cases just their newest album. read more

I have a selection of records to sell - 50s-60's 70's.I had not sold any records before - these just sat in a closet. I took a number of 45s to Josey Records. A good number from some artists I had not heard of, but several Beatles, Stones, Kinks, 4 Seasons, Bobby Darin, Lesley Gore and more. All in good shape (in my eyes) and in original jackets. I also took a small selection of LP's - (as a test) Who's Next, Tea for the Tillerman (Cat Stevens), Gaucho by Steely Dan, Rolling Stones Now (1965), kingsmen, Johnny Cash, Jimi Hendrix (Experience) plus 3 more. After some time as we wandered around the sizeable store (Posters, clothing, 45s, 33s, CDs and more... ) , and i was called to the desk for an offer. I was flabbergasted - $20 for the lot... I asked questions as to why.. I started to pull some back. Basically the 45's were worth 15-25 cents each. we are moving out of state - i felt under pressure. I accepted the offer - begrudgingly.. But i don't intend (at this point) to take the balance of my LP's there... read more

Great place to find music - vinyl or CDs. It's a spacious location so you have plenty of elbow room. I like the way they have the store organized. For vinyl, they have sections just for new vinyl, broken down by genre, and they have used vinyl section also broken down by genre. They also have a big section of 45s if you're into that, a $1-$2 section, a rare/collector vinyl section by genre and also a New Arrivals section which is really handy if you're a frequent customer - just run in, hit the new arrivals section and get out. They also have some CD and turntable listening stations and some cool couches if you just want to sit down and chill out. Just recently (Spring 2018), they have started adding used books, movies, and games. I guess to compete with the Half Priced Books of the world. Every time I go to Josey I have a habit of spending way too much time here. It's a problem, I'll admit it. The selection of used and new vinyl is unparalleled from what I've found, and with the constant rotation of new arrivals, there is literally something for everyone. Some tips: when you first get in the store and are looking for vinyl, peruse the new arrivals. Others have this same idea, because this is where some of the best stuff can be found. Mind you, these arrivals are typically more than what is already in stock, due to demand/desirability, as well, selection. If you find something you like, grab it, and visually inspect, then hold onto while you look for that same vinyl in existing stock. Chances are, if it's there, it's not in the same condition or is a little less expensive. Good way to compare. Of course, as a good customer, if you don't buy, put it back where you found it! I really like to browse and find things I hadn't heard (or thought of) in years. They seem to be doing a better job of cleaning the vinyl lately (justifying a noticeable price uptick), so that helps in not being disappointed when it comes time to listen to your selection. I try to get to Josey every couple of months, usually coming away with 2- 4 albums I can't do without. It's easy, trust me! read more

I just bought a record player and have been enjoying going to all the different record stores. So far this place has been my favorite. The store is big and at first overwhelming but everything is organized very well. They also have books, CDs, movies, and I think I saw comics too. They also have a cool $1-$2 section where you can just pick up something that might be pretty cool. Like I found a German beer fest record. I like that they mark what is new and used very clearly. Not only is this one of the biggest record stores in town, it has probably the best selection of used vinyl. The LP jackets might be hit and miss, but the actual vinyl (the most important part) is in great shape. And cheap, too. Wonderful staff and selection. Highly recommended. read more

Before Josey Records magically appeared in this unassuming North Dallas location, there were basically 2 options for vinyl hunters in Dallas: Half Price Books and thrift stores (plus Good Records for new stuff). I was going to lose my mind if I had to sift through the another box of Barbara Streisand records and Christmas compilations ... This is a record store for the musically curious, the ones always looking for a new sound (even if it's 30 years old). An amazing selection organized just well enough to find what you walked in for but also to encounter unexplored artists and genres. If you've been to Amoeba on the west coast you know the vibe.
