Whale Tea at UConn is a specialty boba tea shop on or near campus that has developed a steady…read morefollowing among both students and people in the surrounding area who make it a regular stop. I found the space clean and the interior with enough character to make it a comfortable place to sit for a bit rather than just a grab and go counter. The brown sugar boba is the signature item. I tried it and the tapioca pearls were chewy in the way that good boba should be, with enough body that they held up through the drink rather than dissolving into something gummy by the midpoint. The brown sugar flavor came through clearly without being cloying. The broader menu covers fruit teas, milk teas, and slushes with a range wide enough that most preferences are accommodated, and customization options for ice level and sweetness allowed me to dial in the drink to my preference. The ability to order without boba if that is not your thing is worth knowing if you are new to the format. Service was friendly and the staff were welcoming in a way that made the shop feel approachable for a first time visitor. Order accuracy has occasionally been an issue, and online orders do not always get flagged as ready in the app when they are, so checking in at the counter if I have been waiting longer than expected is worth doing. Pricing runs over ten dollars per drink, which adds up quickly for a group, and the shop is closed on Wednesdays, a detail worth confirming before making a specific trip. For boba in the Storrs area, Whale Tea sits at the better end of what is available locally.

This is the Whale Tea that created the boba addict in me. When I heard they added egg puffs to…read moretheir menu, I had to come back. I got my usual oreo milk tea with 30 percent sugar and jelly boba, and it was the perfect treat, as always. I got the matcha egg puffs, and they looked so cute with their little smiley faces! The flavor and texture of the egg puffs was also delicious and standard, but I was disappointed because I was expecting an oozy matcha filling in the center, and, as you can see in the photo I posted, there is barely any filling at all. The matcha flavor was very weak, and I was basically just eating a plain egg puff. It was still good, but I hope their other flavors have better filling or it was just an off batch.

I am glad to see a new Vietnamese place in the area though, and especially with earlier hours. We were quickly greeted upon entry, and service throughout was pretty stellar. No complaints at all. We were pointed to what was available on the menu that day, which was probably one of the biggest frustrations about the overall experience. Given that this restaurant is a cafe, it already has a small/limited menu, and then to be told only certain items were being served was even further limiting (overall it was fine though because we knew what we wanted and it was available). The interior is well laid out given how little space they are utilizing, and there was a TV blasting a Vietnamese game show of some kind. I normally would be annoyed by this sort of thing, but it added to the overall charm of this place for me. Clean interior. The food was pretty great overall, you can tell everything is made from scratch. The pho broth was very unique and very complex in flavor. There was a little bit of heat in it, which I absolutely loved, and have never tasted in other pho broths that I've had before. I wish there was a little more meat in the dish than what we were given, but overall pretty solid. This place is a solid lunch time spot to get pho, though there is stiff competition for Vietnamese restaurants in this area...

I ordered the Rice with Korean Short Ribs and at first it's your typical Rice with Korean Short Ribs, but what sets them apart is how much food you're getting for the price that you're paying. I basically got half a plate of short ribs for $10 and just as much rice to balance it out. The short ribs were tender and well marinated. Initially, my thoughts on the short ribs were salty then I REALIZED that I was SUPPOSE to eat the short ribs with rice because unlike western cuisine, the short ribs and the rice are suppose to be eaten TOGETHER and not separately. D'OH! The two balanced each other out nicely when I ate it correctly (i.e. short ribs and rice together). The Pho broth that accompanied the rice dish is a nice touch because traditionally, rice dishes are accompanied with some sort of soup (even in Vietnamese Households at dinner time) because sometimes as you are eating rice, your throat might feel dry and the soup helps balance that out. +ELITE TIP: Before adding fish sauce to the rice, try the short rib with the rice first. Then if you think it's bland, add fish sauce to suit your taste.

But here is the problem: the owner is clearly staying in the kitchen with their head in a hole and has no idea what customers are actually experiencing. The dining room was cold. Not comfortable. Not cozy. Just cold. My wife ordered something she didn't expect and didn't like, but no one ever came by to ask how things were. No one noticed. The waiter wasn't rude. He just wasn't attentive. Out of touch, not alert, going through the motions. We sat there in an empty, cold room with pre-poured dipping sauces in little plastic cups like we were at a takeout counter. its chintzy, For $50? Really? Here is the thing people need to understand: people don't just eat out to eat. They eat out to feel better about their lives. Even if just for an hour. Even if just to escape the kitchen and the stress at home. When the service is missing, or poor, or causes more stress than it relieves, it's not worth going back. No matter how good the food is. It was slow when we were there. So, it's not like they were overwhelmed. They just weren't paying attention to the people who actually showed up. I feel for the owners. I do. Running a restaurant is brutal. But if folks like us don't come back, and we won't, you're in trouble. Because the service element is like a note which says we want you back or we could give a****. The food alone isn't enough. You have to look up from the stove once in a while and see what your customers are going through.

I usually go for the ice cream, but the Japanese (gf if you don't get the ones with cookies or pocky in it) crepes that come sweet or savory, drinks (especially if you go for their special light up, reusable, refillable, lightbulb receptacle that comes with a travel cap when not in use) and their specialty "Dragon's Breath" are so fun and tasty! Absolutely worth the stop into this little shop! The guy who is behind the counter is always friendly and quick. The inside is quaint and has nice music going on.
