Stir fry noodles

Rainy day means pho! That's what Lisette was craving so we tried a place new to both of us. Parking can be tricky, might end up on the street. Inside is big and open with quite a few tables full for a Wednesday night. We had spring rolls too start-- perfectly fresh. Lisette had traditional pho with tripe and beef, while I tried a stir fry noodle dish. I immediately had order envy when I saw her pho! My dish wasn't bad, but I prefer the Thai stir fry noodles because this version was a bit dry for me. Would return, but for pho and those spring rolls!

The pho here is not bad, but I thought that the portion size was too small for about $15 a bowl, which is close to LA and Bay Area prices. I was expecting cheaper pricing given that it's in Springfield MA. My friend ordered a chicken pho, but they misheard it for another vegetarian item. We brought this up and they asked us if we wanted the chicken in which we said yes, but we ended up getting charged for the item they mistaken and extra for the chicken. Also, the street to the left of the restaurant seems a bit sketchy at night since it's super dark with minimal lighting.

Seriously, one of the very best Vietnamese restaurants we have in our area. The menu is extensive with many selections not found in other restaurants. Food quality is always delishes no matter what you order. The friendly prompt service is an added bonus to an always outstanding dining experience.

So we wanted to try a Vietnamese restaurant after leaving mgm and this placed opens up early 9am. We came and it was empty, the worker came over w menus, hot tea, and ask if we wanted anything else to drink. His service gave it an extra star bc he was nice. However as for as authentic Vietnamese food, maybe we ordered the wrong items today. I didn't know what to order or what I was craving so I let my fiancé pick. We ordered fried calamari with sweet and sour sauce and banh canh noodles with pork, shrimp, and imitation crab meat. I wish they added salt and pepper to the seasoning and the sauce is the typically sweet Thai chili sauce. As for as the noodles, it was blahhhhh. I had better banh canh noodles. The one they had seem store bought not freshly made. I didn't know they used imitation crab meat, so that was a downer. Dissatisfied meal, but that's ok it happens. Maybe we didn't know what to order or know what good dishes they have. I'm not from the area so I doubt I will be back here again.

We walked into Soc Trang Vietnamese Restaurant on a Friday seeking warmth from the cold, and something deliciously nourishing. At first, there was some hesitance because they're still doing some work/remodeling outside, and to be honest; the establishment doesn't really look like a restaurant from the outside. At first glance I thought it was a hardware store, but hopefully the outer appearance is being worked on and once it's finished it'll look more inviting. Our reason for coming here is because we were told that this is the new Vinh Chau which I always enjoyed when visiting the New England area but personally, I tasted differences with the food, and I didn't think it was as good. I shall momentarily explain specifically what that means. I'd say the overall new location is about 3 times bigger than the old Vinh chau. Service was excellent, and our waitress was really kind and patient - especially with my excessively undecided aunt that kept changing her menu option every 5 seconds. I was able to get my meatless options and the Vegetarian style pho I ordered was absolutely delicious. The broth was golden and rich tasting, the tofu was lightly fried so it had a slight crunch; really very good, I'd come back for that happily. The summer rolls however, i'd definitely skip that. It was literally just rice noodles, a slab of tofu, and a thai basil leaf wrapped in rice paper - very boring and uneventful and in my opinion doesn't warrant the almost $6 price tag. Everyone else at the table ordered the chicken noodle soup which they said didn't measure up to Vinh Chau's, they still liked it, but again; it just wasn't the same. I was torn between 3 and 4 stars here and I finally decided that because service was so good, I'd give them a 4 but the food was between a 3 and 4. I'd still recommend Soc trang because of its good service, and definitely give that vegetarian soup a try.

Chicken curry sautéed although owner claimed is something like sautéed chicken lime grass or something like that... unbelievable ‍

We've been to a lot of the restaurants in Northampton and decided to jump over to Amherst to try a new to me restaurant. This was a cold and damp afternoon, only a day after a snow storm. Mom was excited to order her Tofu Bahn Mi, but I was really looking forward to a big bowl of hot Chicken Pho and a Summer Roll. Our friend tried the Rice Bowl with Steak and Shrimp and a Bao Bun which was delicious. My mom loved her sandwich. The bread alone was enough to make me decide that I must try one next time. My Pho broth was well flavored. The chicken pieces were slightly smaller than what I'm used to from other places, but there was plenty to enjoy. There was an adequate amount of noodles, basil, sprouts and jalapeños. My Summer Roll, while quite enjoyable, was a little difficult to eat. I'm used to having my roll cut in half and this was served whole. The wrapper started to fall apart at one point, but I made sure that I didn't lose anything. Our friend's bowl was good and filling and we were told that the bun was delicious,

I am glad to see a new Vietnamese place in the area though, and especially with earlier hours. We were quickly greeted upon entry, and service throughout was pretty stellar. No complaints at all. We were pointed to what was available on the menu that day, which was probably one of the biggest frustrations about the overall experience. Given that this restaurant is a cafe, it already has a small/limited menu, and then to be told only certain items were being served was even further limiting (overall it was fine though because we knew what we wanted and it was available). The interior is well laid out given how little space they are utilizing, and there was a TV blasting a Vietnamese game show of some kind. I normally would be annoyed by this sort of thing, but it added to the overall charm of this place for me. Clean interior. The food was pretty great overall, you can tell everything is made from scratch. The pho broth was very unique and very complex in flavor. There was a little bit of heat in it, which I absolutely loved, and have never tasted in other pho broths that I've had before. I wish there was a little more meat in the dish than what we were given, but overall pretty solid. This place is a solid lunch time spot to get pho, though there is stiff competition for Vietnamese restaurants in this area...

Subsequent visits to the same place is basically what solidify my impression about a certain place…read moreand today An Cafe did not disappoint me when I visited them for lunch. I ordered the Rice with Korean Short Ribs and at first it's your typical Rice with Korean Short Ribs, but what sets them apart is how much food you're getting for the price that you're paying. I basically got half a plate of short ribs for $10 and just as much rice to balance it out. The short ribs were tender and well marinated. Initially, my thoughts on the short ribs were salty then I REALIZED that I was SUPPOSE to eat the short ribs with rice because unlike western cuisine, the short ribs and the rice are suppose to be eaten TOGETHER and not separately. D'OH! The two balanced each other out nicely when I ate it correctly (i.e. short ribs and rice together). The Pho broth that accompanied the rice dish is a nice touch because traditionally, rice dishes are accompanied with some sort of soup (even in Vietnamese Households at dinner time) because sometimes as you are eating rice, your throat might feel dry and the soup helps balance that out. +ELITE TIP: Before adding fish sauce to the rice, try the short rib with the rice first. Then if you think it's bland, add fish sauce to suit your taste.
