I began having electrical problems with my older model car. Joyce told me the alternator was fine and that they could not find anything wrong. They replaced the battery even though it was still functioning (with my approval). Three days later I began to see dashboard indicators of electrical problems again, and the car died completely. I had it towed to another mechanic, who told me the alternator and belt were shot. How did Joyce miss this? Very happy with the service here. My car needed a lot of repairs that I had known but was too busy to get to this summer in the midst of all the moving. Finally brought the car here, dropped it off around 4:50PM right before Joyce closed one day. The next morning around 9AM got a call from Joyce listing all the items that needed to be repaired, once I agreed they got right to it and was done by 4PM same day because they had the right parts on hand. **This review only covers VA Safety Inspection Realized late yesterday evening that I had completely missed that my inspection had expired, so I was in a pinch. I needed it done ASAP so I came in bright and early - Safety Inspection doesn't open until 8:00 AM, but not a big deal, the shop put me on the list (around 7:15 AM) and I grabbed a cup of coffee nearby. Came back around 7:45 AM to wait for the inspector, and he even took me early! I was done and on my way by 8:20 AM or so. I've brought my car to Joyce motors for YEARS, trusted them completely, and they have always been kind in return. But that took a 180 the last time I sought their help with a battery change. They fixed the battery fine, but when I returned for my car my brand new vegan vanilla protein powder was 100% GONE from the back seat and they THREW AWAY/STOLE MY ART PORTFOLIO. Crazy, right? I thought so too. "Nick" the mechanic who insisted on clearing my trunk to see my battery threw away (or kept..?) my entire year's worth of art. I touched it the very same day I brought the car in and when I came back, GONE. When I asked what could be done, management completely denied the entire thing. I've given this business well over a thousand of dollars over the years and this was my repayment! They didn't even help me look!!!! Neighboring mechanic establishments thought this was ABSURD as I called to see what could be done. I cannot tell you how much I cried knowing my art is gone. DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU VALUE YOUR ASSETS. My husband took the day off work to take our car in for oil change and maintenance. We got to Joyce Motors around 7:30 am but were told they were booked and couldn't guarantee the car would be done by the end of the day. We could leave the car and take our chances. I told Ryan that we'd try another day because we were planning on waiting around for car. Ryan graciously squeezed us into the schedule and we were out of there by 9 am! We just moved to Arlington several months ago and needed our car smog and safety checked before registering it at the DMV. Found Joyce Motors on Yelp and got things done in less than an hour. Nothing to complain about at all. This is a wonderful longtime locally owned business and it shows. A little scruffy, but this is a great example of a small neighborhood Indy shop. The location is fantastic as it's adjacent to downtown Clarendon, behind the Silver Diner. After calling first, I dropped in on a Thursday morning for safety and emissions inspections, and was seen after only a short delay. I was probably back on the road in about 30 minutes. Honestly, I had a plan to get to my dealership at 6:30 am and get my emissions done. I called ahead of time and show up there, and they tell me when I arrive their emissions has been broken since Saturday. In a loss, I quickly search for places nearby. I find that Joyce opens at 730 am. I panic, because I need to be at work by 830 am. The receptionist tells me to sign in and he usually gets here before 8. Sure enough, he came to work early, and got my car finished by 810 am. I was so grateful. Id come back again. read more

Such a delightful experience! Went in around 11 am with my out-of-state vehicle to get an emissions and safety inspection, so I could apply for a VA registration. They were quick and efficient and I was done in 15 minutes. The wait was also comfortable inside, despite the 36 degree weather outside. Update: Susan the owner called me personally within 20 minutes of leaving this review. She apologized profusely for the situation. After hearing me out and explaining their side, she assured me that it couldn't have been as a result of the past repair but she still offered me a 50% discount on the new repairs needed. I thought this was more than fair. Once they got in, they did confirm that it was an old problem that had been festering. However, true to her word, she still gave me the discount. It was a truly stressful situation but I can say that with the utmost confidence, that I am happy with the service and especially Susan's customer service. I've been taking my car to Joyce Motors for about 12 or 13 years now (of the years I have lived in this state); I don't even live near them now and I still go to them. They have never disappointed me and have often surprised me with a low cost or alternative fix to my car's problem. Once or twice the solution or their fix didn't work and they took care of the problem or error right away :) I give them much of the credit for my car about to begin its 17th year of life with me. They are family run and they exhibit all the traits you would expect from such a business. I'll go to them as long as their doors are open. read more

My passenger side window broke a few weeks back and I did not want to go all the way to Rockville to see my normal mechanic, so I decided to use Yelp and find a place close to home. This place got great reviews, so I decided to go. Worst idea ever. They told me it would be $300 to fix the window--this is a very old car, so it wasn't worth spending that much on a passenger window. I asked if they could then just manually roll it up and I'd fix it later. They then proceeded to roll the window up without telling me it would cost me $150...half the price and it was still broken. Rip off. So based on that I would never go there again. BUT to make matters worst we took the car back to Newport News (hometown) where we had a friend who does car work and was going to help my boyfriend repair it. When they opened the car door panel all the pieces for my window were gone--the motor, wires, all devices,etc. My boyfriend called and the manager was not aware that his mechanics had essentially stolen the items out of my car. They said they would replace the items, but frankly we already were 4 hours away and I didn't trust this place since they ripped me off and thought I was a dumb girl who wouldn't notice pieces of my car were taken. My boyfriend spent almost 4 days taking care of this, finding the pieces, and putting it back together. We then got a receipt for the pieces and our friend charged some minimum labor. We asked Joyce motors for a refund for the $150 I paid and then asked that they pay for the work done to get all of the pieces back. Joyce Motors fought us on this from the moment we walked in. They were very rude and fought tooth and nail until they finally paid almost all back (not all of it however). I would never go back here, NEVER trust them, and NEVER recommend them. Terrible customer service and terrible practice to not know people are taking items from your car. read more

It's hard to write too disparaging a review because they're nice folks. Unconfirmed but I get the family business feel. If friendliness is what you're looking for in a mechanic, check these guys out. I am however, not impressed with their troubleshooting abilities. More than once, I've brought them problems they've "fixed" only to drive off with it still broken. I've had to tow my car to another mechanic, from the drive home from their shop... twice. I would recommend them for problems with known fix-actions, oil changes, routine maintenance, etc. I would find another mechanic for anything else. read more

Went here off a recommendation for a state safety inspection. Great location; right next to the Courthouse metro. I had a question regarding my radio, and it turns out that one of the mechanics used to work for Honda and promptly answered my question. Knowledgable staff! Super efficient! The guy at the front desk told me there was one other car before me and asked me to wait 15 minutes. Exactly 15 minutes later, the mechanic came out and asked for my keys, told me he'd be ready for me in 25 minutes. These guys are super efficient and don't price-gouge. The cheapest safety inspection I've found here - only $16! And the mechanic finished with my car in the time quoted, gave me the keys, and out I walked... Thanks, Joyce! ****UPDATE**** The saga continues. So no more than three weeks and 300 miles after the oil change I was given here, my car broke down with a completely destroyed engine with NO OIL in it. Never go here for an oil change, because the mechanics clearly don't know what they're doing. I appreciate the gesture which is why I have improved my rating, although a proper response upon my initial complaint would have made the experience much more pleasant. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Went in for a safety and emissions inspection and ended up needing two repairs to fix it. One was a simple fix of putting in a light bulb, the other to fix my passenger door. All in all, I ended up paying for 4 hours of labor to get it all fixed - figured it would be quicker and easier to get it done there and reinspected than take it to the mechanic I've used in the past. Not long after I get the car back, I realize they actually fixed nothing on my passenger door. So I take the car back and am told "we tried to save you money and make the easy fix". The guy, Joe, tells me to actually I'll need to purchase new parts to get the full fix. I agree, but contingent upon there being no additional labor costs which Joe agreed to. After waiting 5 days because they purchased the wrong part, I pick my car up with the problem fixed. On my bill is the cost for parts (fine) and another hour of labor ($100). I leave a message about my issue and get a call back a couple of days later. They claimed I was told there would be no additional labor for diagnostics. NO KIDDING, they already knew what the problem was and charged me two hours to NOT FIX IT. So I ask for a refund but am told "It's my word against his" and am given the choice of $50 back or nothing. read more

I went here for a second opinion on repairs to keep my hoopde alive. I previously took my car to Auto Stop, after reading a billion Yelp reviews. Auto Stop is 5-stars. They found all the problems, and were honest about the costs. Joyce Motors was honest with me. They also found all of the problems, admittedly only after I told them what Auto Stop had already found. They diagnosed half the problem on their own. Why did they get my service? Because they were still honest (if not 5-star Auto Stop quality) and they were right around the corner from my house. The put my car in decent enough condition that I could sell it. Their hours were quiet (8 - 4ish) but I'm a government worker and respect that. they also sorted it out so I could pick up my car after hours. Did I mention they are 2 blocks from the Clarendon metro? Major score. This place qualifies as my local spot. I would still recommend Auto Stop ANY DAY over them, but these guys are good for your needs in the Clarendon area. read more

A few weeks ago I brought my Cadillac CTS in to get a headlight replaced. The previous day, I tried to do it myself but couldn't get to the bulb; I checked on line and discovered that the only way to replace the passenger-side headlight on a 2007 CTS was to remove the front bumper assembly. I'm not kidding. The local Caddy dealer wanted $350 to do the job. I brought the car to Joyce, along with the bulb I bought at the local auto parts store and described the predicament to Joe, the shop manager. He said, "This is easy, we just need a slim mechanic with a thin arm" and off he went to get the mechanic. Ten minutes later, the new bulb was installed for $20. And that's why I've been going to Joyce Motors since 1997. read more

I'm really impressed. I went in suspecting that I might have leaks in my 2 right tires. After 10 mins the mechanic came to me said he found no leaks in my right tires, but a small nail in one of the left tires that had not punctured through. He removed the nail, did not need to plug hole and brought me my car. When I asked how much he Said "no charge". Fast, friendly service. I took my car in for a safety inspection and waited for about 15 mins (one customer ahead of me). The actual inspection itself only took about 15 mins as well. I thought it was very well priced at just $16 (this is posted on the wall, very transparent). FYI their posted inspection hours end at 5 pm. The mechanic found that both my license plate lights were out and told me he'd go ahead and replace them. I had to ask how much it would cost (he did not volunteer the price himself), and he told me it would be about $18 per bulb for parts + labor. The final bill had no surprises -- exactly what he quoted me. This may be a bit pricier than usual (I've no idea), but I feel like what I paid is worth it. Convenient service right in my neighborhood, and having them fix any issues saves me the hassle of figuring out what I need, finding parts at a store, and figuring out how to replace it myself. Super efficient. Overall I would recommend and would return again for my auto needs. read more

I took my 4Runner to the dealership for an oil change and of course they came back with a laundry list of stuff I need to fix. I didn't trust that ALL those things would go wrong at the same time, but did believe that I needed to get new rear brakes and that the drive belt was approaching the end of it's life. So I took it to Joyce to have them give a second opinion. Their quote was much less than the dealership so I let them take care of it. I was pleased with their work. They don't have the equipment to resurface rotors, so I ended up getting new ones for the rear brakes and it still cost less than the dealer, and actually, the overall bill (including the drive belt) was less than what they originally quoted. After they replaced my serpentine belt, there was some miscommunication about the agreed price. I thought it was going to cost $125, they said it was $225. They didnt give me much trouble, and let me walk out with the price I thought it would cost. I really appreciated that. Thats what you want from a car shop. Joyce Motors did right by me today! When another shop quoted me $730 to replace a water pump and drive belt for it, I called two other shops for estimates (I'd gotten safety inspections done at Joyce previously, so I knew they were generally good). Joe at Joyce spent a lot of time with me on the phone, then did the work himself when I dropped it off today. Total cost: $305. He also took a look at the oil pan gasket which the other shop said was seaping oil - not according to Joe! He saw nothing wrong. Joe also said on the phone as I was asking for pricing from them on the litany of "recommended repairs" from the other shop that he found it difficult to believe that a 2006 Prius with low mileage needed so much work (especially true considering I've done all recommended maintenance and I generally get any recommended repairs done right away). It was nice to hear another mechanic say what I was already thinking. read more

These guys are great. I have a 1994 Accord that I plan to drive until it dies, and they do all of the preventative maintenance for a great price, and won't recommend any unnecessary work. They stand behind their work, too. I had to have my radiator replaced, and when it turned out the replacement was defective, they took it back in and did the work immediately with no questions asked. I've had issues with this kind of thing at the chain repair shops. I know next to nothing about cars, and I trust their work and advice completely. read more

The hubs (okay, he has a name but I prefer the hubs because it sounds funny rolling off the tongue - don't judge!) and I moved to the DMV area back in the fall. We delayed letting of our sunshine state plates...and changing our driver's licenses. And we delayed. And then we realized we needed to get a move on when a friend gave us "the speech" about how Virginia cops are hard-core. True or not, I was scared enough to wake up at the crack of dawn and make it to the Dept. of Motor Vehicles by 7:15 AM the next morning. Alas, I found Joyce Motors for the emissions & inspection part of becoming a Virginian through Yelp. I admit that I am an assertive & empowered feminist but most women can attest that going to car shops can be overwhelming & intimidating. Joyce Motors made me feel like anything but. I arrived and I was greeted with a smile and friendly banter about being from Florida. Their waiting area is tiny, worn down BUT stocked with water & current magazines. Yes, current, not from 1998. I was there for about 1.5 hours as there were 2 customers ahead of me. They did their job and were courteous. And they didn't try to sell me high-tech, Blue Ray, XBOX 360 windshield wipers because I'm a woman. read more

I had a pretty good experience with Joyce Motors. I was able to get an appointment quickly - and they did a boatload of stuff on my VW Bug (2 new tires, new front axel, new battery, emissions inspection) - all for 700 dollars - which I thought was a pretty good deal. They didn't try to sell me any other services and everyone I interfaced with was really nice. They also referred me to a great European car place (since they couldn't fix the problems with my lights on the dashboard). I will probably take my car to Drive European from here on out - but had a pleasant experience with Joyce (after an absolutely TERRIBLE experience with the Tyson's Stohlmann VW Dealer). read more

Staff were friendly, and noted a couple more mechanical things that needed to be done to my car, but did not push me to get them all done today. They knew i was headed out of town the next morning, and told me that none of the maintenance was urgent, and we could find time in the coming weeks to look at it. As a 20 something female, I used to hate going to the mechanic because they would try to bamboozle me, and I felt very comfortable here, and also no one spoke to me like I was an idiot. They were also fast! Had to leave my car with them for about three hours because it was busier than expected, but when I told them I needed it by the morning they assured me it would be ready. While I didn't actually get my car serivced by Joyce, my sister-in-law has and she recommended them highly. When my tire blew out, I took it there to get it changed. The told me they'd be glad to help but that it woul probably take all day and that I'd be better off heading down the street to the trie place on the corner.
