Disappointing. This was the closest Chinese place to my friend's new apartment, and the prices and selection looked good so we took a walk over to check it out. Although it doesn't say anywhere, the photos clearly show a dining area so we thought we could go and eat there. Nope, no tables to be found. It felt like walking into a sleazy check cashing place, with the kitchen and staff behind metal fencing. Well, we were here anyway, so we ordered. The staff was friendly and the food came pretty quick, but that's about the only highlight of this visit. We walked back to his place and started to eat, and... were very disappointed. The food was bland. Not explicitly bad, but it was just meh. My pork egg roll had no pork in it - just cabbage. The General Tso's looked like it'd been made with ketchup. First time order via Door Dash. We bought L22. Hunan Shrimp and the L20. General Tso's Chicken. My brother had the General Tso's, and he said it tasted all right. My meal was bland, lacked spices and heat. And there were maybe three shrimp in the container. The taste didn't improve with all the soy sauce. I didn't finish it, even though I hate wasting food. I went here at around 6 o'clock tonight in search of a place that was still a. open b. accepted credit cards and c. wasn't on the Northside (cough cough China King). Joyful Garden delivered. I got the General Tso's with the egg roll for like $8. First off, as you can see from the picture, I just want other Chinese places to take note at the chicken/broccoli ratio. NO ONE LIKES BROCCOLI. Got it? It only adds to the aesthetics. I don't think anybody actually bothers eating them. The chicken was pretty good, not burnt, but the best part was the delicious sauce that it was drenched in. I mean they really caked that sh/it in, and I just want you to know, JG, I appreciate it. The place was also well run, and had fast service. If you're looking for Chinese on the west side, this is your place. Also, there was a sign that made me laugh. Someone already posted a pic of it, so I won't, but it was a picture of lettuce that said: "WOW!!! GREEN LEAFY VEGETABLES. EAT MORE GREEN MORE HEALTHY" First off, no one gets that excited over a picture of lettuce, and also, who the hell wrote that sentence? Did the guy have a nephew with Down Syndrome and he put him in charge of the signs? And that's no disrespect to the awesome Down Syndrome community. But that is sometimes how they write. I don't really like the taste of the food here. The sauce on the chicken and broccoli was not good. The chicken in the house special fried rice didn't look, feel (texture wise), or taste anything like chicken. I just ate around them because it was definitely not the same that was in my chicken and broccoli. Traveling south and stayed in Wilmington. First time stopping there. After an 11 hour drive, just wanted comfort food, which is usually Chinese. Disappointed in wonton soup, pork fried rice, vegetable lo mein, but surprised by orange chicken. Not very orangey, but a good texture and taste. Will have to investigate other Chinese here. I love ordering from this place, pretty much the only local restaurant which delivers to the downtown/Brandywine Park area of Wilmington. Food is the basic Chinese stuff, but good and REALLY cheap. The girl who takes your order in the evening is a sweetheart, never rushing you, helpful... the delivery men are friendly, ALWAYS smiling. Many times they'll include a free iced tea or soda just to show appreciation for your business. Doesn't get any better than this when it comes to Chinese food delivery. read more

Joyful Garden is our favorite Chinese food in Wilmington so far (we've only lived here half a year). The lady that works the counter most nights is sweet as can be, always friendly and has never messed up an order. I strongly advise delivery if ordering at night; the restaurant is on a darkly lit downtown side street. I don't want to stereotype the neighborhood but at the same time I would never send someone down there alone to pick up food after the sun goes down. Safety first--have it delivered! Portions and prices are on par with any other Chinese take-out place. Shrimp with broccoli, their hot and sour soup, and the bean curd dishes are our favorites. My only complaint is that the curry is fairly nondescript. I've requested "extra spicy" a few times and the results are random and not significantly different from the 'normal' curry. I'm happy to continue my hunt for great Chinese curry elsewhere and stick with the other menu items here that are done much, much better. Summary: until someone offers a better Chinese take out I haven't tried in Wilmington, this is the best of the category. read more

Being in the downtown/Brandywine Park area of Wilmington, not many places deliver to residents. That being said, this place is wonderful even without having much competition. Their prices are really reasonable, and the food prepared perfectly. I can order a feast for our family of four and keep it under $30 with enough left over for lunch the next day, and they have really great coupons on their menu. They always get my order right, even when I stray from the menu and order bean curd with black bean sauce and steamed broccoli, a dish that my children love. Every one I have dealt with has always been extraordinarily friendly and helpful. The food is always fresh, hot, and never greasy. I really can't say enough nice things about this place. I am staying down the road at the Execustay by Marriot (An absolute abomination of an extended stay) and this place is about two steps away from my hotel. I am impressed by not only the quality, but the quantity and value of the food from this location. I ordered Cream cheese rangoons, and sweet and sour chicken and the food was delivered piping hot and was delicious. I would recommend eating here to anyone trapped in the financial district. Just don't walk there at night. It's not dangerous... it just feels a bad zombie movie once all the bankers go home for the day. read more

I'm wondering if the owners changed, because the food here has gone down in quality over the past 3 years. I always loved to order from here because they carry Ho Fun noodles, which is a favorite of mine. My coworkers stopped ordering after a few instances of clumpy sauce and bad textured chicken. Most horrible experience!!!! Placed an order for delivery. Provided my address with zip code. The restaurant confirmed delivery within 45-50 minutes. They called 20 minutes later to say they couldn't deliver because the address I provided was over 5 miles. I knew this was a lie so I checked while on the phone and it was only 2.8 miles. This evening makes the last time my friends and I will order from Joyful Garden. I ordered online and no less than three times, when I was ready to proceed to checkout, I was told I hadn't yet ordered. It took me at least 30 minutes to be able to finally place our order. Not only did they mess up this order, but had done so several times in the past. When our order arrived, they made a mistake on several items. I immediately telephoned the restaurant and tried to explain the problem. I was told the manager would be with me shortly. When he came on, I tried to explain the problem. I explained about the website error. I tried to explain about the mistakes with our order. Not once was an apology given for the inconvenience. At the end of a frustrating and unproductive 20 minutes, he said I needed to speak with the manager. I don't know why he failed to tell me initially he wasn't the manager. In short, I spent over 20 minutes trying to explain the problem to someone I could barely understand and who I'm sure, barely understood me, failed properly identify himself, and yet insisted upon arguing with me. When I was finally able to speak with the manager, I ended up pretty much repeating myself. At least she could be understood. However, she also suggested I telephone my order rather than use the website. I informed her this wasn't the only time that they had made mistakes with our order, and that those orders had been placed by telephone. Not once did the employee or the manager offer to replace the wrong order with the right one. Not once did either admit that they had messed up the order. Has this been the first time Joyful Garden had messed up our order, I and my friends would've let it go. However given the above, I and my friends won't be ordering from Joyful Garden for a very long time, if ever. They lost business tonight by losing four good customers. The "chicken fried rice" is something that appears to be chicken like, sitting in orange Mexican-like rice. Ever since I started working in downtown Wilmington, I searched wide and far for a chinese food spot for lunch. Not only does Joyful Garden offer the convenience of online ordering, they give you a 5% discount for ordering online. Also, repeat customers can redeem a stamped "rewards card" for a free meal after so many orders. Of course the food isn't authentic chinese food, but it certainly does the job of filling you up, all while tasting pretty darn good. My go-to lunch orders are Chicken/Beef with Garlic Sauce, Szechuan Chicken/Beef or General Tsos Chicken. I'd avoid the egg rolls as they are quite anaemic when it comes to the filling. Where else can you get a full meal and drink for $6 in downtown Wilmington? The staff are always working hard and fast to get orders out as fast as possible, especially during lunchtime. I have yet had a negative experience with respect to waiting for my order. My order is always ready within 15 minutes of placing it. read more

Was not feeling the food. I like the fact that they have a lower order minimum to deliver but I will not be ordering from here again. I ordered the combo platter of the shrimp and lobster sauce and an order of the BBQ spare ribs. Both are easy to make and yet this place screwed it up. The ribs barely had any meat on them and made me think they were from malnourished cows or something. The entree had rice that was terrible and the sauce was just lacking in the flavor. Order food for delivery and about an hour in I noticed my food still hadn't been delivered so I called the restaurant and was told my the cashier that my food was on its way another hour passed !!! Called them back now told the delivery guys car broke down!!! So when I immediately requested a refund because I paid on their website. They at like they wasn't going to give me one. I called several times that evening and they kept telling me they gave it back. Long story short the next afternoon still showing in my account that they never refund my money. So once again I called them back they said a manger will call me shortly they never did so I called back and threatened that they either refund the money now or I am coming up to the place.. Miraculously my money was refunded . What's worse they never offered a discount later or an extra egg roll on my next order. The sweet and sour chicken was good. I asked for shrimp fried rice and was given some yellow looking rice with nothing in it. And I didn't like it. The crab rangoon was not at all the best I've had, but not the absolute worst. I probably won't order it again though. The egg drop soup smelled "different" and didn't taste that great and the strips you put in the soup were stale. I won't be ordering that again. Chinese donuts were excellent. This was my first and last time ever ordering from this place. I ordered the cheese crabmeat wonton and it was horrible and i ordered the chicken wings with plain fried rice. I asked for hot sauce on the wings but I mean did they have to put the entire bottle of sauce on them. My chicken wings were soaked in hot sauce and the wings were completely soggy like they were not ever fried. I called and asked could they remake the wings, didn't even ask for my money back and the man kept hanging up in my ear. I asked to speak to the owner and left my phone number.
