A coworker and I flew in from Las Vegas for business and was looking for something for dinner. After realizing that Elko was a "drive through" city, on the way to Reno or Salt Lake City, and the only types of dinning options were mom & pop style settings, I searched my iPhone for a place that we believed sickness would not be in the future. That is when we decided on JR's Bar & Grill. If you are expecting a bar & grill atmosphere, as the name depicts, this is not the place for you. They do have a bar, but it is sectioned off and not within the restaurant setting. It is a family style setting like a Rams Horn (Midwest) or a family style diner. Overall I was impressed. I ordered the salmon with a baked potato and veggies. My co worker ordered a 10 inch pizza. Food was good and the atmosphere was nice. Their deserts are huge. I recommend this place. read more

Dependable service with OK food. I only recommend the burgers. Don't worry about deciding how your eggs or meat is cooked. They'll figure it out for you. Staff is friendly but very robotic. Four stars for the service. Two stars for the food. Three overall. Menu boasts they have the best steaks in northeastern Nevada. If these are the best I'd hate to eat a steak elsewhere in town. T-bone steak was thin, very tough and sinewy. Also not cooked properly, I requested medium rare and got barely cooked on one side and medium plus on the other. No I didn't send it back since I suspected they would just throw the same steak back on the grill for too long, rendering it completely inedible. The sides were just ok, baked potato (good), steamed veggies (from frozen I'm sure), and iceberg lettuce garnished with a couple of cherry tomatoes and grated carrot passed for a house salad. Would I eat here again? Sure. I'll stick to a sandwich though. There's gotta be a better place for a steak in town! read more

We were there for dinner. The spot was close - walking distance - to our Hotel. I had shrimps with rice what was ok. My son had the mustang burger - he could not eat it - the taste was awful. I have been impressed with my meals both the times that I have eaten here. The spinach salad is incredibly hardy and very well put together with great ingredients. Also the Buffalo burger made of buffalo meat was well prepared. The food is so down home and comfy, and the service has always added to the down home and comfy feel, leading to forget that it is even in a Casino. I wish wife and i would've just shared a pizza. $23 for the steak and scampi was a bit high based on the overall taste and quality, but the server was fast and friendly. They use some whipped butter spread that didn't melt on my baked potato. And the corn with bacon was... interesting. Place overall was clean, which was nice. Don't let the shabby décor fool you: For two weary travelers in search of a late-night meal on the desolate Nevada interstate, we were pleasantly surprised! Staff were friendly, despite the fact that we arrived minutes before closing time. The "urban cowboy" pizza was delicious--even by my NYC pizza-snob standards! Fabulous crust! My fiancé ordered the fish & chips (halibut with sweet potato fries). He is a former chef, and he very much enjoyed his meal. They had a decent beer selection, and portions were generous. The menu was HUGE, and it appeared that they'd hired a trained chef to execute it. My only critiques would be (1) that the booth seat could've been cleaner, and (2) that the cigarette smoke from the adjacent casino was a bit intrusive -- but secondhand smoke is pretty much a given in Nevada. They serve the full menu in the Lounge til 11pm, and for super-late dining, the staff informed me that the Red Lion hotel/casino across the street serves food all night. I tried to order a reasonably healthy meal here, which is not easy given the menu. However, I ordered a salad, a piece of halibut with a side of cooked vegetables. Most of it went into the garbage because it was almost inedible. The salad was brown and wilted, the halibut was way overcooked to the very chewy stage, covered with breading and drowned in an obnoxious white sauce. The vegetables tasted like frozen vegetables that had been boiling on the stove for two days. To top it off, service was practically non-existent. Never again. read more

Prices were good, staff was friendly, food was not great, but great for the price. Varied menu, with nothing that I remember over $18, and most entrees under $15. Went for dinner, and had the Blackened Chicken Alfredo, which was good, but a little watery. My wife had the 10oz sirloin, which was good, and had whole roasted cloves of garlic. The steak was overcooked, more medium than medium-rare, but it was alright. The mashed potatoes were great, home made, and the mixed vegetables were good, for frozen veggies. The casino staff was also very friendly, and even gave us a couple of post cards for free, when we asked where we could find some locally. Note that while the Casino allows smoking, and has ash trays, the restaurant is non-smoking. I can't speak for the bar section, as we sat in a booth. read more

Very good service good atmosphere and family friendly. They seated us in a timely manner and our server was prompt. The inside of the place was very clean an looked like somewhere you would find miss Kitty and Matt Dillon at and I liked that and found it to give you a very relaxed and at home feeling. I really enjoyed the hostess and the server they were very friendly and really took good care of us. Had the fish and chips and the only bad part was the cole slaw which kind of tasted nasty, but guess it was left over. The server returned to check on us several times which is unusual now days. I know it's Sunday afternoon. I know it's a small town. But seriously -- this was among the most underwhelming food I've had in recent memory. The Caesar salad was downed in Caesar dressing. The best thing about the shrimp skewers was the sugar cane skewer. The vegetables were defrosted, cooked, then overcooked to grey. The rice looked and tasted like it came out of boil n serve bag. This is the best I can muster: the lemons were well sliced and the Romain lettuce was crisp. This was not good. Service was very bad. To make someone wait over 5 minutes to be seated, when you are not busy and standing in plain view of the staff that are in a group talking and laughing. To finally be seated and again having to wait to get my order taken. I literally watched The servers continue to talk and laugh and ignore me. In addition once I was served by Cynthia she continuously wanted to touch me on the shoulder. This conduct is unacceptable as I have never met her. The food was nothing spectacular eggs served right, sausage links for good. The home potatoes were deep fried diced pre-made potatoes with strips of onion and green pepper, again nothing spectacular. On the good side they do bring you a pot of coffee so you can refill your own cup so you don't have to wait on them. These people don't even know how to slice a muffin that is pre-sliced as I actually got 3/4 of a muffin a quarter of a muffin after I took it apart from the large part of the muffin, it's like someone did not know that the muffins came pre-cut. We went here for dinner as well as breakfast. Dinner I got the seafood fettuccine. The lobster bisque tasted horrible - like dirty sink water. The seafood fettuccine was mediocre and bland - the white sauce had no flavoring. Breakfast we got the chicken fried steak which was ok and mom got the omelette - which you can pick two toppings like mushroom and avocado..but for $8.00. Anyway we forgot the free continental breakfast and we forgot the coupons in the hotel room and we got them and came back - the server was there and remembered us but the manager (a women) was being extremely difficult and would not refund it back as she wanted a receipt...but the server never gave us a receipt. I will never recommend this place to anyone on the fact that if you have some sort problem the manager will NOT try to resolve it. Whats a few bucks to them versus customer satisfaction and i will tell other people. Because the American Gold Country Inn was very clean and a good stay but its too bad about this place. We spent the night in Elko on our way to Yellowstone and ate at J R's based on the Yelp reviews. We both had burgers and they were above average but nothing amazing. I am pretty sure the patties were the pre-frozen kind you get at Sam's or Costco that have the "charcoal" flavor added. Not a bad burger, but not the best I've had. The sweet potato fries were really good. We were going to get the chicken fried steak that was the special, but saw a couple come out of the kitchen before we ordered and changed our minds. Not bad food if you are traveling through, though. And there isn't much else in town. BTW, the restaurant is off the casino area, so if you have a problem with cigarette smoke, go someplace else. read more

The staff was so cheerful. We were promptly greeted and seated. Our breakfast came in 5 minutes and looked and tasted great. The waitress suggested the country potatoes with our meal and they were darn good. Pancakes were delightful too. Nice way to begin our day. read more

Overall my experience there was fantastic. My son had the chicken fried steak which was obviously homemade which impressed me. I was expecting a frozen prepared item. I had a burger with sauteed onions, sauteed mushrooms, bacon, cheese and guacamole and the tabasco chips. The burger was great and huge, the tabasco chips were a pleasant surprise. Being from Vegas you do not find many places that scratch cook their food. This was all or mostly scratch cooking. We even went back a second time before we headed back home. I had read many reviews of the restaurants up in Elko and none were too flattering. Stacy at the Fairfield Inn recommended this place and now I am doing the same. Yeah it is adjacent to a smoky casino floor but the food will make up for that. read more

This large family friendly restaurant is part of a large hotel casino complex. We had a quickie dinner of garlic mushroom burgers, mine with french fries, my wife's with sweet potato fries. She thought the burger was overdone; I liked it just fine. Cloves of garlic mixed with the meat, piles of onion and tomato and lettuce. The menu is large with multiple entrees, pizza and sandwiches. Jrs has the best biscuits and gravy in town, I think. When you have a room you get access to the pool, you can also order food and drink at the pool. It is one of the deepest pools in Elko it goes to 9 feet deep. read more

I was pleasantly suprised by the dinner. JR's was clean and service was great. The Casino next to it does have a Smokey smell, but JR's wasn't as bad. We had salads and they were good. I would give them a try. There aren't a lot of places to eat close in Elko. We are staying in the RV park so needed to stay within walking distance.
