Our very very fresh fruit bowl!
    Robin F.

We read the poor reviews prior to stopping in to JR's and concluded that maybe this place was "hit or miss." We kept our expectations low but soon realized that low expectations were completely unnecessary. The diner was quiet and we were immediately greeted by a friendly waiter and an adorable "junior waitress" that couldn't have been more than 6 or 7 years old. The restaurant is very clean and we seated ourselves at a window side table. We visited on a Sunday around noon and had our choice of breakfast or lunch (they're open until 2). The menu is large and the food is what you'd expect at a diner - simple and "comfy." Everything we ordered was homemade and absolutely made to order. The fruit bowl was filled with pieces of apple, kiwi, melon, grapes, strawberries and banana and had clearly been made just seconds before being brought to our table. My husband's egg whites were light and fluffy. Toast was perfectly brown and not over buttered. We both ordered shredded hash browns that were homemade and delicious. Even something as basic as my hot tea (a Lipton tea bag) was brought out in a mini tea pot which is, in my opinion, so much nicer than just a mug :) We were so impressed with the food that we chatted with the owner for a few minutes. She clearly takes a lot of pride in making sure that everything is fresh and homemade. She had just finished making a pot of vegetable rice soup and brought out a small dish for us to sample. It was so delicious, we ordered some to go. We live on the north shore but will definitely be sure to stop by again for a bite the next time we are in the area.

Pastel with chicken cheese and corn. Deliciousness

He genuinely cares about his restaurant and the people he serves. A lot of owners would get defensive over something as minor as "the home fries weren't well done enough," but not Ari. We've been to Hamilton Diner many times and the food is consistently delicious. On this visit, our home fries weren't quite as crispy as we'd asked for. It was a small thing that honestly wouldn't have affected our rating at all -- we know how busy things can get. What impressed me most was Ari personally coming to our table to apologize and bringing out a fresh replacement. He didn't have to do that, but he did - and that's exactly why we'll keep coming back. Thank you, Ari, for your compassion, your humbleness, and the pride you take in your restaurant. You and your team are doing it right. Also sorry for the lack of photos, we dug right into our dishes. South Street Diner was one of the few places open that early, so I decided to give it a try. Parking was easy at that hour, and I thought it was kind of cool seeing a classic diner tucked in among all the large office buildings downtown. I was in the mood for pancakes and ended up ordering the diner special with eggs over medium, home fries, corned beef hash, bacon, and pancakes. Unfortunately, the food was mostly average to below average. The eggs were a little underdone, the home fries were slightly overcooked in spots, and the toast was pretty standard diner fare. The homemade salsa was actually a nice touch and added some flavor to the potatoes. The biggest disappointment was the corned beef hash. I was hoping for something homemade, but it reminded me of the canned version I grew up eating. The texture and flavor just weren't for me, and I ended up leaving most of it behind. The pancakes were okay but a little dense and doughy, nothing particularly memorable. On the positive side, the coffee was decent, the service was fine, and being open early is definitely a plus for travelers. Overall, I'd put this one close to 3 stars. It's convenient if you need breakfast before sunrise, but the food didn't quite live up to what I was hoping for.

Busy joint, tight seating, and energetic servers who keep attentive. -- Patty Melt: So much to like about this, from the marble rye (though I think pumpernickel) to the full size patty (better than the double smashed you get elsewhere) to the onions to the gooey melted cheese to the extreme juiciness and pleasing flavor. I didn't detect any Russian dressing, but this sandwich wasn't lacking for moistness or flavor oomph. A near-elite rendition and one of the best I've had in a while. Excellent. -- Fries: Included with the patty melt and a plentiful supply. The bad news: they're the dreaded industrial "coated" kind. The good news: they were piping hot and cooked perfectly, crisp outside, fluffy inside. The great news: you can substitute home fries. My server offered a sample of the home fries. -- Home Fries: I found them to be right in my wheelhouse for doneness, crispness, seasoning, onions, and overall texture and flavor. Superb. Between the good looking plates that passed by and my enjoyment of my own food on my first visit, there's sure to be a second. Looking forward to returning with my wife for breakfast and more of those home fries.

For the record: under the ADA (and Massachusetts law, which follows it), a business can ask exactly two questions -- is this a service animal required due to a disability, and what task is it trained to perform. That's it. No vest, no ID card, no paperwork required, full stop. I said as much, was met with attitude, stepped out to keep the peace, came back in with documentation anyway (which I didn't legally owe him), and got a passive-aggressive "well you could've shown me that at the beginning" -- followed by a genuinely bizarre stare-down over the counter. Charming. Then, while waiting on my order, I made the mistake of taking a video of the (admittedly cute) interior -- 100-year-old diner car, hard not to want a keepsake -- and got yelled at for filming, with a pointed accusation that my brother outside was "also filming," said like it was a crime. Meanwhile this place has an active social media presence built on customers doing exactly that. You can't crowdsource your Instagram content and then treat a phone camera like a weapon. Oh, and the hot dog itself: $5 for a boiled dog on white bread, no toasting, no char, nothing. A sad little snack to cap off a genuinely unpleasant interaction. The building has real history. The guy behind the counter does not deserve it.

Upon walking inside, you'll immediately feel like you've gone back in time. It gives off a very classic, old-fashioned diner feel, with booth seating and red stools along the counter. Important to note that this place is cash only. Lobster and other seafoods are advertised as their specialty both online and within the restaurant. I never had a lobster roll before, and unfortunately, this place made me think lobster rolls were mediocre and overrated (and then I had my life changed by lobster rolls from other places). FOOD: Lobster Roll (6 oz.) (2.75/5) - I opted for mine to be served warm with butter. It came with a side of slaw and very generous portion of onion rings and fries. The lobster roll itself was lukewarm and the melted butter came on the side in a small plastic cup. (I was expecting for the butter to be more incorporated.) The lobster sat on a small bed of cut lettuce. The lettuce wasn't of the freshest quality as some pieces tasted strangely bitter. The lobster was a tad rubbery, and everything was overall bland to me. I found myself reaching for the salt shaker more than would have wanted to. SERVICE: I believe a new hire was getting trained during my visit, so it was a bit clumsy. However, I found it rather charming. They are all very warm people, and you can tell that this is a family owned establishment, which is why I really wanted to like this place. TLDR// Unfortunately, did not have the greatest first lobster roll experience here. Hopefully, I went on an off day or I was better off ordering something else.
