Our very very fresh fruit bowl!
    Robin F.

We read the poor reviews prior to stopping in to JR's and concluded that maybe this place was "hit or miss." We kept our expectations low but soon realized that low expectations were completely unnecessary. The diner was quiet and we were immediately greeted by a friendly waiter and an adorable "junior waitress" that couldn't have been more than 6 or 7 years old. The restaurant is very clean and we seated ourselves at a window side table. We visited on a Sunday around noon and had our choice of breakfast or lunch (they're open until 2). The menu is large and the food is what you'd expect at a diner - simple and "comfy." Everything we ordered was homemade and absolutely made to order. The fruit bowl was filled with pieces of apple, kiwi, melon, grapes, strawberries and banana and had clearly been made just seconds before being brought to our table. My husband's egg whites were light and fluffy. Toast was perfectly brown and not over buttered. We both ordered shredded hash browns that were homemade and delicious. Even something as basic as my hot tea (a Lipton tea bag) was brought out in a mini tea pot which is, in my opinion, so much nicer than just a mug :) We were so impressed with the food that we chatted with the owner for a few minutes. She clearly takes a lot of pride in making sure that everything is fresh and homemade. She had just finished making a pot of vegetable rice soup and brought out a small dish for us to sample. It was so delicious, we ordered some to go. We live on the north shore but will definitely be sure to stop by again for a bite the next time we are in the area.

Pastel with chicken cheese and corn. Deliciousness

We've been to Hamilton Diner many times and the food is consistently delicious. On this visit, our home fries weren't quite as crispy as we'd asked for. It was a small thing that honestly wouldn't have affected our rating at all -- we know how busy things can get. What impressed me most was Ari personally coming to our table to apologize and bringing out a fresh replacement. He didn't have to do that, but he did - and that's exactly why we'll keep coming back. Thank you, Ari, for your compassion, your humbleness, and the pride you take in your restaurant. You and your team are doing it right. Also sorry for the lack of photos, we dug right into our dishes. PATTY MELT REVIEW…read more Iconic diner on the edge of Chinatown, a couple blocks east of the Expressway. It's been around for decades and it's open 24/7. More of an authentic this-place-has-aged feel than the typical diner attempt to evoke an earlier era. Went in the morning and went for a patty melt-- because I could. It's too elusive these days, so being able to not only find one but have it at breakfast, a double win. Double patty is standard, not an add-on, and fries (probably frozen, but lengthy, crisp and fluffy) are included. No onions, no rye, but lettuce and tomato-- a non-traditional configuration. Nicely browned patties that had juiciness. The ingredients weren't anything to write home about, but the execution was great all around and so was the cheerful service from a seasoned veteran. Sure, I've had better with the proper rye, griddled onions, and higher quality beef, but an easy 4 stars for the execution, value, vibe, and being able to even order a patty melt before 10 in the morning. Bonus points for a plastic ketchup squeeze bottle that was slightly warm. Breakfast items (eggs, crispy home fries, and pancakes) on a neighboring table looked good.

Busy joint, tight seating, and energetic servers who keep attentive. -- Patty Melt: So much to like about this, from the marble rye (though I think pumpernickel) to the full size patty (better than the double smashed you get elsewhere) to the onions to the gooey melted cheese to the extreme juiciness and pleasing flavor. I didn't detect any Russian dressing, but this sandwich wasn't lacking for moistness or flavor oomph. A near-elite rendition and one of the best I've had in a while. Excellent. -- Fries: Included with the patty melt and a plentiful supply. The bad news: they're the dreaded industrial "coated" kind. Upon walking inside, you'll immediately feel like you've gone back in time. It gives off a very classic, old-fashioned diner feel, with booth seating and red stools along the counter. Important to note that this place is cash only. Lobster and other seafoods are advertised as their specialty both online and within the restaurant. I never had a lobster roll before, and unfortunately, this place made me think lobster rolls were mediocre and overrated (and then I had my life changed by lobster rolls from other places). FOOD: Lobster Roll (6 oz.) (2.75/5) - I opted for mine to be served warm with butter. It came with a side of slaw and very generous portion of onion rings and fries. The lobster roll itself was lukewarm and the melted butter came on the side in a small plastic cup. (I was expecting for the butter to be more incorporated.) The lobster sat on a small bed of cut lettuce. The lettuce wasn't of the freshest quality as some pieces tasted strangely bitter. The lobster was a tad rubbery, and everything was overall bland to me. I found myself reaching for the salt shaker more than would have wanted to. SERVICE: I believe a new hire was getting trained during my visit, so it was a bit clumsy. However, I found it rather charming. They are all very warm people, and you can tell that this is a family owned establishment, which is why I really wanted to like this place. TLDR// Unfortunately, did not have the greatest first lobster roll experience here. Hopefully, I went on an off day or I was better off ordering something else.
