J's Homestyle is a great place to go if you want some good home cooked food. Not only is the food great, the service treats you like they have known you for years. They are fast, friendly, and J's has an atmosphere that is hard to find. You can't beat it. This is my favorite restaurant in the Cedar Valley, hands down. The owner is such a kind and genuine woman, and her employees, service, food, and atmosphere reflect that. If you are looking for a delicious, home style, Iowa breakfast, THIS IS YOUR PLACE. My personal favorites include the Panther Fried Omelette, the Western Omelette, and the Biscuits and Gravy, but the menu is very versatile, including not only a wide variety of delicious breakfast foods, but also many lunch and dinner options. The prices are very reasonable for the quality of food and service. Even when every table is filled, the service is fast (I don't think it's ever taken longer than 10 or 15 minutes to get my food) and the waiters and waitresses make sure to be hospitable to every customer. Walking into J's is almost like walking into my grandma's kitchen rather than walking into a restaurant right of campus. I've heard such great things about J's so I wanted to try it out. My boyfriend and I went for breakfast this morning and I ordered a western omelette (eggs, ham, green peppers, onions, mushrooms) with hashbrowns and toast and he got steak and eggs with hashbrowns and toast plus a cinnamon pecan roll. First of all, it took an awful long time to get those two dishes and our server looked like she hated being there. Secondly, he asked for his steak medium rare and it was definitely medium. My omelette was awful.. The eggs were really pale looking as if they hadn't been cooked long enough. The vegetables had to have been out of a can.. They were just horrible. I didn't even eat half of it. The hashbrowns and toast were good.. but that's not too hard to mess up. To top it off, I have been in and out of the bathroom since eating there. I will not return nor would I ever recommend this place to anyone. read more

I've only been there for breakfast, but we go often. Have only had bad service once (out of many times) and I haven't seen that server since. This is our usual place because a) the breakfast food is great at a decent price and b) the service has always been excellent. read more

Our family was traveling through town. Everyone greeted us (my husband, two children and myself) as we came in. Service was prompt from the beginning. Food was excellent! Large portions so we got to take home leftovers. They gave our children cookies to go as we were paying to leave. Overall-disappointed. This was just OK. Was expecting more. Ordered the ham and Cheese omelette. Big but not much flavor. Bacon was great! Hash browns OK as well. Coffee is what you'd expect. Waited in line for 1/2 hour for breakfast on Sunday (10/19), got seated and order taken right away, waited over an hour for our food. Waitress didn't check on us once. We drank all our drinks and asked for fresh drinks when our food arrived and they CHARGED us for them. A lame insincere apology about the food taking so long was not enough to make up for the horrible service. Food wasn't that great either. read more

Amazing meals with great prices and an amazing staff plus atmosphere. They serve meals all day and this is that place that you want to go with family and friends and about anyone. Theres always a spot for someone at J's and you'll never go home not full. They serve killer breakfast and lunch and dinner. Very disappointed! Service was fine and we had a sweet waitress but food was not good at all! I had the tenderloin with fries....fries were hard kinda like they had been kept hot under a heater for awhile...no flavor either. Tenderloin had a weird porky flavor and the ketchup even tasted funny! Husband had the meatloaf with mashed potatoes and gravy. Meatloaf was really sloppy joe meat in two slices of bread with gravy on top! Will never return! On a brighter note, the water was delicious! Ice cubes were crystal clear! Decor was outdated and it was not a very clean restaurant. You can tell a lot about a place just by how clean the front door is....this one was dusty and full of finger prints! I ate breakfast here after hearing positive reviews from some of my peers. Pick up orders are available, which is awesome for me since I live within walking distance and can order Sunday brunch if I'm feeling lazy. The decor and atmosphere is very family oriented, home cooking, and has a typical small-town diner feel. The food comes in large portions and is very hearty.
