I was surprised with how shitty the chicken katsu was. My boyfriend & I ordered it. Both of our chicken katsu looked good enough until we both took bites. Way too much breading for barely there chicken! Too much crunch, to the point where it was snappy. The rice was fine, the salad was okay (depends on what you like) I thought my katsu was bad until my boyfriend told me he had the same issues. Bleh. The sushi I ordered was definitely solid, no problems! I might come back for the sushi, not their chicken katsu, that's for sure. I bought a groupon for this restaurant at the recommendation of a friend. I wasn't sure about how well it would turn out since I had never been there before. The service was good, and I noticed during my around 30 minute stay that there were many regulars at this place. This was definitely a good sign. I ordered the dragon roll, and my mom ordered the eel roll, and the Philadelphia roll. They were really good, and the rolls were big enough that we got full and took a few home. I have eaten at J's at least 30 times in the last three years. It's less than five minutes from my work. The lady is always nice and friendly every time I come by to pick up my order. It is apparent the business is ran about a few employees, and the owners manage the business. Their teriyaki plate is one of my personal favorites of teriyaki chicken in general. My second favorite menu item is the Lancaster Roll, however its albeit too pricey for the portions provided. It was okay. Based on reviews I was expecting great. The owner was nice and service was prompt, but food was okay. I had the chicken teriyaki bowl and my veggies were watery. My husband had the spicy pork yakisoba. He liked the spice level. As he was eating it he discovered he really had less noodles than appeared because the noodles were on top a mound of rice. The best teriyaki in Salem is at Fuji Ricetime and it is well worth the drive in to downtown to get it. read more

This place was absolutely wonderful!! I was in town with friends for a conference, and we serendipitously stumbled upon this place that just turned out to be a gem! The teriyaki tofu was incredible! We stopped here during our travels in Oregon. We were impressed with the solid food and by the super outgoing and friendly hostess! The food was tasty and reasonable. May not have the fastest service around but J's is defiantly the friendliest place to eat. Come here just once and they will remember your face forever. Our experience was totally different than the other reviewer. We were immediately greeted by a very gracious Japanese lady, who tried VERY hard to please us the whole time we were there. The food was excellent, also. I went with a girlfriend for lunch the first time and had the Chicken Teriyaki Bowl and a Gyoza appetizer. They were both delicious, especially the gyozas (pot stickers). I liked it so well I talked my husband into coming with me for dinner a couple of days later. We had the Hot & Spicy Pork this time. This place is in an unassuming strip mall. Only reason we checked it out was because of the yelp reviews, otherwise I would have passed this place up just based on visuals. Luckily, we didn't. It's a Mom and Pop place, and service was friendly, helpful, and quick. We must have had a "what-do-we order" look, because as the wife/owner was taking a couple of plates of food to another table she said those were the chicken teriyaki and gyoza combo. Guess what we decided to get. The chicken teriyaki and gyoza combo was a good amount of food. We also ordered a pork teriyaki/chicken teriyaki and gyoza combo. The pork teriyaki was GOOD! Very flavorful. The dressing on the side salad was really good. I could have had more salad, because of the dressing. The only downside for food was the yakisoba. The noodles were piled on top of rice, which I thought was a little strange. And a little bland. Teriyaki is where it's at. If we weren't travelling through, I'd check them out again. read more

Oh my gosh! The owner here is so sweet! She even asked us if it was our first time. She seems to take pride in knowing her customers. The atmosphere is not quite as nice, clean or updated as I may have liked, but I will look past it because the lady was sooo kind. The food was very good. We enjoyed the yakisoba noodles and the teriyaki sauce. I also had the gyoza plate with beef, rice and salad. The salad had a nice dressing and the portion sizes were generous. We were passing through Salem and I wanted sushi but my husband wanted a hot meal. This restaurant had what each of us were looking for. They were very busy but we were greeted and seated immediately. The owner (who served us) was very nice and helpful. We got both chicken teriyaki, gyoza, and a California roll. The servings were very generous but the food was so good we ended up finishing everything! The teriyaki chicken with rice tasted fresh and cooked perfectly. It was better than most teriyaki we eat. The California roll was also above average. It tasted homemade and was even better than my expectations. I expect that the rest of their sushi is delicious also.
