I was actually on my way to Del Taco when I saw J's Teriyaki tucked inside a small strip mall. I decided to check out their menu in the window, and then called hubby to see if he wanted that instead. He's from Hawaii all his life, so been missing authentic Asian food outside the home. I went inside and was greeted by a friendly lady with a Korean accent. I was excited to tell her she was the first Korean I've encountered in Salem. I'm half Korean so it was nice seeing someone "like me." Anyway, after reading the whole menu to husband, he decided on Chicken Katsu and I got vegetable Tempura. I didn't wait too long, and when I got home to open the delicious smelling food, I was pleased at the way it looked. It was fresh batter and fresh veggies. My husband knows more about Asian cuisine than I do, and he said the Katsu was ono. I liked my food, too. We will be back soon. This place was amazing! We got the Lancaster and Dragon roll which was superb. And then each ordered the chicken teriyaki combo with gyoza. Everything was phenomenal and tasted great. But the most impressive thing was the lady serving us and running the restaurant (we think she'd owned it) was the sweetest thing on this earth. So nice and hospitable. And then when she found out that we called ahead and were on our way way to Seattle she gave us water to drink for the road and folded dollar bills into shirts for us to take like a souvenir. She was so lovely and if I'm ever in Salem again I will be back! read more

Lots of veggies, great portions and amazing service... I wish I could rank this 6+ stars! You know that feeling you have after eating at a teriyaki restaurant? Heavy stomach, dehydrated from the saltiness, and not really satisfied? This place breaks the mold. This is a Korean-owned teriyaki restaurant with sushi, daily rotating specials, teriyaki, excellent yakisoba, and AMAZING spicy chicken/pork/beef. The spicy chicken has more of a gochu Korean flavor base (maybe why others were not accustomed to it and thought it tasted tomato-based) and comes with plenty of vegetables. I told the owner I could handle the spice and wow, it had me sweating as if I had just had jukkumi (small squid fried in spicy sauce) back in Daegu. The house salad is excellent and comes with a creamy mandarin/orange dressing that really helps after the spicy chicken! My wife (who is Korean) ordered the Yakisoba with less sauce and she found it to be exactly what other restaurants fail to deliver. The noodles were not overcooked and mushy and the overall texture had a great blend with the well-cooked meat and variety of vegetables (have I already mentioned how great it is that there are so many great vegetables in the dishes here?) We stopped by on our way to Eugene and had to make way in our itinerary to return on our way back. The owner was so happy to see us again and we really felt welcomed! Found this adorable little hole in the wall today. Ordered the teriyaki chicken plate and wow! It was amazing my sister ordered the yakisoba and egg rolls and everything was so delicious. I don't see too many customers and I am guessing there's only one person working in the kitchen. Best customer service I've received! They are friendly and go the extra mile to make sure you are satisfied! The lady always remembers what you have ordered in the past and asks if you would Like the same thing :) She also remembers what my kids have ordered. When my wife, son, and I walked in, I immediately felt at home. My mom used to own a Japanese restaurant and the atmosphere was the exactly same. The lady was very nice and greeted us. Place is quiet and cozy, but not too small. Food was obviously family recipes as they were similar but different to other restaurants'. We were constantly checked on, which was nice as we never ran out of water. We are definitely coming back here for good Japanese food and nice, quiet atmosphere for a family. read more

We tried J's Teriyaki for the first time, yesterday. It's now our favorite teriyaki restaurant. The salad was super fresh. The chicken teriyaki super flavorful. Rice was perfect. We also tried the chicken kabobs and they are our new favorite teriyaki dish! Perfectly charred. Very flavorful. Perfect medley of mushrooms, chicken, onions and peppers. 0 stars. I went to get a food order and to refill a teriyaki sauce bottle. I was deciding on food, so they charged for the refill 1st. I ordered the food, and they came out as I prepared to pay for the food and said they were adding $2 to my bill so I asked why. They said they didn't charge enough for the refill since I had a 16 oz bottle not 12 oz (They didn't say sorry we need to add $2). I had paid $5. not $7. previously on this same bottle refill. THE REFILL PRICES ARE NOT WRITTEN ANY WHERE IN THE RESTAURANT. No record of DIFFERENT REFILL SIZE prices noted. It was upsetting because they did not tell me ahead of time and tried to add the difference to my 2nd food order. It was their mistake for not posting the prices and not informing me of the price increase until trying to add the $2 to the 2nd order. Since I was visibly upset I explained I was autistic and can take a minute to understand. Then I heard the owner whisper to another person making fun of me for being autistic and being emotional. I got more upset since she didn't even apologize. I asked why she hadn't apologized for their mistake and she argued she did. Then she tried to take back the bottle that I had brought in, that they had already refilled and I had paid for. I asked why she didn't just make a slip of paper that said the 16 oz bottle cost $2. more than the 12 oz refill since the ONLY REFILL bottle price on their counter says $5. It DOES NOT SPECIFY for a 12 oz refill. She laughed in my face and said "why don't you make it for us." They made fun of me, were rude, and offered no apology for something that was their mistake. She lost a $40.+ order for a $2. mistake tonight. My family usually spends $80. a visit to J's and have spent over $600.00 at this place in the last 3 months. They just lost a very good customer for a lousy $2. and for making fun of a person with autism. It's a sad day that people can be so unkind and uncaring over $2. and rude because a person has a disability. read more

Worst Asian food in Salem. It's that plain and simple. The chicken cuts contain too much fat and cartilage which makes it seem as if they are trying to cut costs at the expense of quality. Not to mention the warm sushi...I regret spending any money here. read more

The food is very good...a notch above Love Love, if you ask me. But that's not why you choose J's over other teriyaki places. You go to J's if you want to feel like someone loves you and cares about your general wellbeing, because that is how the woman who works at the counter (the owner?) makes you feel. The first time we went, in addition to excellent service, she tried to convince me to order regular Pepsi "because you're already skinny! You don't need diet!" (I was about 10 lbs overweight at the time but hey, flattery will get you everywhere!) The second time was several months ago when I was quite pregnant. in addition to fussing over me and trying to make sure I was comfortable, she was adorably enthusiastic about assuring me that the cali rolls used Krab, not real crab, and were therefore safe for me. We went again a few days ago with our 2 month old. Upon entering, she encouraged us to sit, brought us menus, and rigged up a high chair on its side to put our daughter's car seat on, "so she can see you!" Good food cheap, amazing service? Hubby left a huge tip. So what does she do? She origami's up one of the bills into an elaborate heart, and gives it to me! I encourage you to give this woman your business!! read more

As appetizing as all their food looked (thank you, pictures), I went with their Teriyaki Bowl special for $4.95. And a huge bonus here to really note: I asked the female cashier (she may have been one of the owners/managers) if I could get spicy chicken teriyaki for the bowl (instead of regular teriyaki). She said it normally costs $1 more to get the spicy option, but today, since it was my first visit, it was on the house. Now that is going beyond the call of customer service! I got the food to go, but it looked so damn good when I opened the to-go box that I just noshed away at it in the car. It was very delicious. It was still temperature-hot, meaning it had just been cooking on the stove minutes earlier...super fresh. The mixed vegetables were wonderfully cooked and added amazing color to the dish (heck, I even saw some broccoli in there). The sesame seeds added an little extra appeal for the eyes, but it seemed to get lost in the shuffle here otherwise. I got a nice bit of spice, but nothing overwhelming. I'd say Fuji Rice Time's spicy chicken still packs more punch. The chicken was juicy and moist. I would have liked just a bit more teriyaki flavor here, but maybe the spice negated some of that. All in all, a very successful dish that I would eat again and again. The rice was also cooked very well and, when mixed with the teriyaki and spicy sauces, really made me one happy panda. Flavor, people! So important! I received a bit more of their house spicy sauce on the side (yup, they gave me more sauce if I wanted it). Good flavor in that as well. I dumped that all over my food after snapping the picture you see above and continued to chow down. Chuck B., a person I know through Yelp, had reviewed this place last year and had an awful experience. He then went back (on the request of another Yelper) a month ago and gave it rave reviews. Chuck mentioned that new management was the reason for the turnaround. I can confirm that with the extremely friendly service I received on my visit. Just a great place to go. It's a bit of a shame that the place is a bit hidden behind a Wendy's; otherwise they would be getting far more customers. But hey, go check out J's Teriyaki & Pub for yourself! (It's really four stars on Yelp for the food, but I'll bump it up to five for the wonderful customer service.) read more

They have excellent teriyaki here. I had the chicken-beef-gyoza combination and upgraded to fried rice. Very tasty lunch. I was hoping for more individual selections of sushi, and not just rolls. I opted not to order sushi. The waitress was fantastic and very attentive. Price was great considering the quality and amount of food. But not sure why they have "pub" in their name as it feels like a teriyaki shop, not a bar. But they have a selection of spirits if that's your thing. It has everything I want in a quick, flavorful lunch, or take out. But wouldn't be my first choice for a pub or special night out. read more

I really hope we had a bad experience here with the food. Now service-wise, these folks are downright fantastic. Super kind, very sweet. We got two combos - Chicken, Pork & Gyoza and then Chicken and Beef - to go. Rice was overcooked to start with. The chicken was acceptable, the pork and beef were horrible. Beef was grainy and mushy (not sure how that was done) and lacked any good beefy flavor. The pork, not in my box, was declared "nasty" until he tried my beef, then he said the beef beat the pork in the bad category. Salads were crispy and fresh and the dressing was amazing. So I'm sad. Very very sad because where we live now doesn't have any great Teriyaki joints (like our last place of residence that had a terrific hole in the wall every few miles) and we figured Salem would have GREAT yaki. Friendly owner and very helpful. We had spicy chicken teriyaki, but it was not spicy is actually kind of had a tomato sauce flavor. The chicken was not grilled it was just sautéed in a wok. It had a touch of propane flavor. We also had the pork teriyaki. Again, the pork was not I grilled it seemed boiled. The salad dressing was good very - it had a carrot/gingerish flavor. read more

The rice was very good, the teriyaki chicken delicious but the teriyaki sauce and the carrot ginger salad dressing (house dressing) was the bomb! Owner was very friendly, told us of upgrades to kitchen equipment he had recently made to be able to make specialty menu items and was glad we stopped in. Service was quick and friendly as well. You probably shouldn't go to J's Teriyaki. Actually, let me rephrase that, I'd really rather you didn't go to J's. Where to begin. I have been there no less than half a dozen times and have yet to even have anything less than an A+ experience. The husband/wife co-owners are so friendly and wonderful and provide an unsurpassed level of service. The female half comes out and plays with the kids if she isn't too busy and typically makes my daughter a special set of chopsticks better suited for kid hands. She kneels down to the kids' level and always goes out of her way to make each of us feel special. The food is always hot and delicious. The prices are fair and the atmosphere is fresh and fun. The sushi is excellent, the yakisoba is to die for, and my personal favorite, the chicken teriyaki, served here is second to none. So, I'd really love to give this place a bad review to scare off all the newcomers and keep this place all to myself. But I do realize that they may eventually go out of business if I were their sole customer. So I give up, go ahead and go to J's, just don't tell anyone and let's keep Salem's best kept secret to ourselves. 5 out of 5 potstickers, would definitely recommend. read more

Amazing food! And very clean dining. Everything we ordered was right on the mark: gyoza, Egg Rolls, Tempura, salad, Chicken & Beef Teryiyaki. The BEST Tempura I've had the BEST Eggrolls my boyfriend ever had (he's picky about his Eggrolls.) Also the waitress is super sweet and gave me an Origami shirt from one of dollar bills as my change :-) Wish we lived closer to this place. read more
