The food here is ok, but the service is horrible. If you don't want to work, please don't take the job and make the customers miserable! We don't come here often simply because it is so frustrating! When you walk in, get in the disorganized line...oh, but pick a table first. If you don't have a table, when you go to order, they snarl at you! Granddaughter ordered a glazed cake doughnut. I ordered a bear claw croissant. DH ordered a scrambled egg sandwich. She handed him the pastries...no napkins, no silverware. I got a coffee and she filled it up to the very rim...no room for cream and sugar. When they brought his sandwich, it was on a microwaved croissant with ham and cheese. He ordered just scrambled egg! He's lactose intolerant so what's he going to do with cheese and microwaving a croissant ruins it! It becomes hot, limp bread! We were traveling home from Peoria and stopped in Jubelt's for lunch. This was our first time. It was right at the beginning of lunch time and they were moderately busy. First impressions, the restaurant needs some help with cleanliness. Tables and chairs are worn out, the floor just looks old and dirty. I'm sure they clean, but when things get that worn and old, it doesn't matter. Part of the "charm" of this restaurant is the Route 66 proximity, and that was part of our reason for going there being the 100th anniversary of the mother road. When you enter you are faced with a bit of confusion. There are handwritten signs telling you to grab a menu and get a table, then you have to go to the counter and place your order. I've seen this before and it makes little sense. I suppose it's a labor saving method, but not practical at all. We found a table and looked at the menu, which is quite extensive. They, also, baked their own breads and pies and have a display case with pastries. We placed our order and returned to our table. The food arrived in a reasonable amount of time, but while we waited, I watched people coming in and being just as confused about the ordering system as we were. Plus, the line at the counter grew into the seating area. I would think the counter would be good for to go orders like the baked goods and pastries rather than dining customers. I ordered the 1/4 ham and provolone croissant sandwich with fries, my daughter ordered a turkey wrap, and my wife ordered the turkey club. They both ordered fruit cups as their side. The croissant was very good. It was flaky, moist and pillowy, but held the ingredients of the sandwich well. My wife and daughter said their sandwiches were fine. I'm not sure my sandwich had a full 1/4 pound of ham on it, but it did have good flavor. The fries were hot, but right out of the bag. The fruit cups didn't appear the freshest. It looks like they do a good business with the baked goods and pastries. Maybe that should be the business which would make more sense with the style of service they are doing. It was worth trying, but I don't know if I would return. We stopped by Jubelt's on the way to Milwaukee and it did not disappoint! It is adorable and the lunch and breakfast options are plentiful. Service was friendly and fast. I got the summer salad with chicken and fruit and vegetable beef soup. Both were fresh and tasted great! My fiancé got the biscuits and gravy, hashbrowns, bacon, and sausage and it was all delicious. We got some baked goods on the way out and they were also wonderful. I did get a special latte that I didn't care for, so I would try a different drink next time. read more

We were passing through the area and thought we would have breakfast . Its not a sit down restaurant where they wait on you , its more like a fast food , you go to the counter order your food, when its ready the bring it to your table. I got the 2 eggs w/ hash browns . sausage & toast with a soda to drink . The sausage was not freshly cooked , it taste as it was cooked earlier then served to me as the ends were hard and not hot , the hash browns were warm not hot by no means and the toast was the same way. Excellent food! We each had the loaded baked potato soup which was good and creamy. My boyfriend had the three sirloin tacos which was very filling. We drove from Kansas today and before we went to our RV spot we wanted to stop at what we thought look like a cool restaurant. Shame on us! We park in the very sparse parking lot at 3 PM on a Saturday and they told us we couldn't park there. We were in the restaurant literally two seconds when we were told we couldn't park there. Very very bad customer experience. There was nobody but two cars in the lot by where we're parked. This was so rude I wouldn't eat here ever. They obviously didn't want our business. Management you need to train your staff to be kinder and better. You lost our business and we travel through here all the time. read more

FINAL VISIT I've been going to Jubelt's for years, & grew up in the area. Now that we live out-of-state we had always made it a point to stop and eat-in or get food/baked goods to-go because we could always count on the quality. Today was another story....stopped in and the first thing we noticed was how chaotic and rushed it was to order bakery items at the counter...like it was an inconvenience that we were spending money there. I asked if they happened to have any raisin pies left, which was personally my main reason for going there all these years (I assumed they were probably out, but had to ask since we had driven so far), but was told rudely they hadn't made them in "years" . I would have to say what stood out even more than the rudeness (to us as well as the elderly couple ahead of us) was how nasty the restaurant looked and smelled. I noticed my feet sticking to the floor by the frozen pie case. It seemed like there had to be multiple health code violations going on. That alone gave us reason to never come back. Unfortunately we purchased a couple of cookies & a mint brownie cupcake, before fully realizing what a dump the place had become. The lime frosted cookie had zero flavor, the brownie cupcake was dry and the "frosting" was actually a rubbery marshmallow substance It's so disappointing that Jubelt's has gone so downhill. read more

Possibly my favorite thing about this place is how several locals approached us to ask after us and proceed to share stories and history! My second favorite thing may be the old pictures adorning the place. The menu is huge, far too much to choose from- if I'd taken my time to look through all the offerings I might have difficulty choosing. The servings are as huge as the menu! In any case, I was there just to try their famous baked goods. While all looked appealing, I chose a simple chocolate frosted cake donut. I highly recommend. read more

Super cute "hole in the wall" diner on Rt 66. French toast was delicious & my husband enjoyed the horseshoe. Not a fancy great service kind of place, but 5 stars for what it is - hole in the wall diner to stop in for a quick bite of good food! Order at the counter & the bring the food out for you. Very reasonably priced & the establishment was fairly clean. Note - they have new hours & now closed at 3 on Sundays, but that may be only temporary. Covid / Precautions info: Staff wore masks and use hand sanitizer. Masks weren't enforced for patrons that I could tell, as most there weren't wearing them but we had no problem finding a table that allowed for some distancing. I ordered the western omelette. Ate through about half of it and all it all was Kraft slices. Torn it apart and only have had onions and peppers (very little) and one 1/4 inch piece of ham. Looked at receipt and the gave me a veggie omelette. But even if it was a veggie one it was more like a cheese omelette made with kraft slices. Also had marble toast that was very hard with a small dot of better. I requested hash browns to be well done, that didn't happen either. I have never complained at all restaurant but I thought they needed to know in order to improve. For a $9.56 meal they gave us a credit of $3.00, lol. First time here, we live about half an hour away and have been hearing about it for a while. We got here around 1pm and I ordered the Cali Club Melt with Caesar Salad and peach lemonade; my lunch comrade got Pulled Pork and Steak Fries. Friendly, fast service. All yummy. LARGE portions. A bit too much butter/grease and too much bacon (said almost no one ever), but half of my sandwich did have less bacon and I enjoyed that more; it overpowered the turkey that I was really interested in. Next time I'll probably just get a turkey sandwich. Or breakfast. A huge menu for both morning and afternoon and lots of baked goods. A ton of flavors for coffees, teas, and lemonades. On August 11 Jubelt's dining room was open. This sit-down diner also has a drive-thru. However, Jubelt's isn't fast food so if you use the drive-thru, as I did, expect to be directed to a wait area where your meal will be delivered. In my case that was exactly 20 minutes from ordering with two other orders ahead of mine. (Admittedly, a Club sandwich is a complex and time consuming item to prepare.) Typical of Midwestern small town diners Jubelt's has a wide menu of breakfast to supper to dessert items at reasonable prices. Also typical, taste is middle of the road. I ordered a potato soup and Club sandwich combo. The flavorful soup had bits of bacon and carrot with semi-firm potato chunks; the Club sandwich was neither objectionable nor impressive. The "Place your own order" system only creates chaos at the front counter as soon as you walk through the door. The lady behind the counter although very nice, was extremely inept and easily rattled and should not be running the show. Half of our order didn't even come out. The CB that did come out was cold,fries were cold,my watered down Pepsi was warmer than the food. So I made my way through the crowd,waited in another line to inquire about my missing food,and was told the ticket didn't make it to the kitchen. WTH?? After of few moments of excuses I just asked for a refund for the missing item,not my entire bill,although it wasn't worth paying for either,and we were on our way. At one time this was really good place for food and service. I couldn't believe the waitstaff was gone and now it's more or less like a fast food operation. They did bring the food to our table, but no check back to see if everything is OK or for anything. Can't call it fast though, took almost 40 minutes to get our breakfast items and they were not busy at all. Grab a menu yourself, go up to the counter to order and pay. Give them your name. I can remember when the French Toast was made from bread they baked in their bakery. I'm pretty sure it was. What I was served sure didn't seem to be. But be that as it may, I couldn't taste any flavor in the egg coating....no cinnamon, no vanilla.....nothing. Best I could tell it was just beaten egg. That's not even any effort put into it. A small diameter sausage patty, two eggs and 3 pieces of French Toast (if that's what they call it) all for $9.59. Two of those slices maybe should have been flipped over a little sooner. Bit hard around the edges on those two. Cut past the hard parts to eat it. The biscuits are good. I don't remember the gravy being as thick as it was. It's pretty thick when it's similar to paste. A small carton of milk was $0.99 cents, no cup or glass offered. A straw for the box. My wife had an Iced Tea. Not sure if there are refills on that. They never said and they never offered anyway. We've eaten here several times over the years, but we won't be stopping back here again. We'll explore other restaurants in the area. I probably would have given a better rating if not for the fact that while waiting in line for restroom one of the employees came out, picked her apron up off the floor outside of restroom to put back on and go back to serving food. This was a one person at a time restroom. All of us standing in witnessed this. If I had not already ordered and paid for my food I would have left. When it was my turn for restroom I saw there was a hook on the inside back of door the waitress that she could have hung her apron on instead of throwing it on the floor outside of restroom. We live about a half hour away and driving through on our way up north for a volleyball game. We try to support local when we can, so decided drive through vs chain restaurants. Ordered and it took a bit to get through the line up to the window. Paid, got our drinks and a few min later we were asked to pull up by the door and they would run the food out. Nearly 20 min later and we still didn't have food, I went in to ask about our order and was told they were waiting on my bagel. Waited a few more min and finally walked out with my food. After more than 35 min since we arrived in line, we were on the road to find out my bagel sandwich was piping hot, but my husbands croissant sandwich was cold. Made us wonder if they forgot mine and his had been sitting until I went in? Certainly felt like it! Messaged the restaurant about maybe a training moment where if there is going to be a long delay to maybe indicate that as I would have ordered something else but instead, got a message back with excuses. Based on some of the reviews, we were looking forward to a, hand crafted experience. We found that if the pastries don't come off of the food distributors truck, for some reason they're made to taste like they do. We tried 2 of their recommended specialties from the baked goods case, a flakey puff pastry and a cinnamon roll. The pastry seemed stale and we brought it to the attention of a team member at the register. She apologized and happily replaced it. It's substitute wasn't better, and we just gave up. The cinnamon roll also seemed stale, and had an ingredient we couldn't pinpoint that seemed out of place. For our meal we ordered one biscuit & gravy and the Texas Burger. Again the alleged store baked biscuit seemed off, and the gravy didn't have the taste of being freshly made. No flavor and maybe even no sausage? The burger was nothing special, but it was tasty and we were happy to split it. Over all, the vibe and the environment was great! Very friendly and busy. We just figured that maybe this is just some thing regional as this restaurant/bakery has been around a long time and still seem to do quite well. I think it's just not for us. Dating from 1922, Jubelts is arguably the oldest surviving restaurant on the original US Route 66 segment in Illinois.  It's about halfway between Chicago and St. Louis. Functionally a full bakery with attached restaurant, the eatery is open to serve delights from all three meal dayparts. It was late when I rolled in, and I was really looking for a motel to crash in, but when the lightbulb went off that this place was what I remembered it to be, I had to try it. Although faced with a very lengthy menu,  as well as a full page of specials, when I'm in central Illinois, there's really no choice for me but to get a "Horseshoe" - a plate unique to the area that many say originated in the Springfield area. A "shoe" is two pieces of toast, with your choice of protein on top (burger, ham, pork, bacon, chicken) topped with fries, and then cheese sauce or sausage gravy. Throw in a couple of fried eggs in the middle there, if you're inclined. The "pony shoe" is a downsized version, and that was just fine for me; i chose another regional speciality, the fried pork tenderloin as my protein.  A tenderloin in these parts (and Indiana, and Iowa) is a lean piece of pork hammered very think, battered, deep fried, usually served between a terribly inadequately-sized bun. In this case, it was in the middle of my pony.  Opted for cheese sauce, probably gravy would have been a better idea with the pork. Nevertheless, if you're getting your kicks on Route 66, plan your day's drive to hit Jubelt's. Good grub. read more

This place is great! Their bakery is fantastic. I absolutely couldn't have it all but what I did have was fantastic and the things I didn't have looked as good or better. Once again I find myself out on old route 66 and stopped here for lunch. I had the patty melt on their marble rye. Wow delicious doesn't do it justice. With it 98 degrees outside, ( not the boy band ) the cherry lime-aid really hit the spot. Excellent food all around. Even had to get some bakery for the road. Drive thru lane was closed so secured my items in Jeep & went inside. Two - 2 tops with folks eating & a woman with her son ordering donuts & cookies to go. 2 women & a guy behind the counter. No acknowledgement whatsoever when anyone entered let alone getting a "May I help you"? As I am waiting for the lady to complete her order 2 women walked in & proceeded to go around the lady ordering & was IMMEDIATELY waited on by the other girl behind the counter. Only after those 2 women left & sale was completed with initial lady - did I get acknowledged & order taken. Pathetic - customer service is basically nonexistent anymore. Pancakes- Amazing. Biscuits & Gravy- damn near amazing. I only ly say damn near because it seems I am always wanting there to be more sausage in the sausage gravy. But I have to say the gravy had a great sausagey flavor. My 13 year old son even agreed.
