I believe I've said this before: I consistently root for the underdog (except when it comes to the Yankees...don't hate). When it comes to the juice bar underdog, this little wooden hut-like stand on the corner of 1st and 1st probably embodies your idea of a cheaper, quicker, realer (I just wanted to keep with the -er parallel) version when compared to other posh green markets and things with fancy names. They really pulled on my heart strings with the sign expressing how they are working hard for tips, which they would really appreciate. There was another sign asking for part time help and I was about ready to quit my teaching job because it's much easier to make people a nice juice with love and send them on their merry way. They feel psychologically and physically better and there's more immediate gratification than students get in the classroom, no? Yes. But instead, I ordered my juice, feeling like I had done my body good, and sipped the bright red beet tinted beverage as I walked down to Chinatown. I swear I got funky looks... and I guess I don't blame them. That color looks freaky... even though it's more natural than all those other caramel colors we usually drink. This place has sort of a beachy feel, and you can get both fruits and veggies juiced on the spot. They have three sizes, the medium is $3.99 and the large is $4.00 and extra "boosts" or shots of "bee pollen" (i"m just getting into the juicing thing so I haven't explored all of that) are available for an extra $.25 or $.50. If you don't want to get one of their recommended "cold killer" or "energy potion" whatever mixes (all of which contain some kind of apple or carrot juice in addition to other fruits, veggies and perhaps some ginger or garlic), you can choose your own mix and they'll hook you up. You can also get coffee (they brew the cafe bustelo brand), chai, lattes and other exciting energy cocktails. Again, I don't know what these entail. There's also a red bull punch (with a sugar free option) and all kinds of acai berry blended drink options. The acai is the new expensive berry on the superfood block. Is it a hoax? Let me know. (I saw a bottle of acai berry juice at another greenmarket today and it cost $20... that's INSANE unless it's a magic elixir... again, inform me). I came here on Sunday afternoon at 3pm, hungover, and absolutely starving. I ordered their açaí smoothie for a whopping $9. The service was very fast and there are two cute benches on the right to sit down and people watch. I hate myself a little for spending $10 with tip for the smoothie, and also I was very desperate for some form of fruit, and I finished the smoothie in only a couple of minutes. The woman worker made me a large and made me pay for it... I visited on Tuesday, July 3 when it was over 90 degrees outside. I understand the shack is small and all the fruits can't be stored in a refrigerator/freezer but I wish at least the worker added ice to the juice. The juice was super lukewarm, hotter than room temperature. It was not drinkable. Also, I love lots of ginger in my juice but there was way too much ginger in the juice I ordered here. I really questioned if either the fruit/greens were rotten or there was too much ginger. I made my friend check and make sure it was too much ginger and not rotten fruit. I had to add apple juice and ice to the juice to make it drinkable. I won't be returning or recommending. read more

Next time you're there...look closely... See the Grande sized cup..next to the Super Grande sized cup...(the one you pay 1$ extra for) Notice how they are not the same cup manufacturer... See how the super grande is taller, but thinner, the grande shorter but thicker... This is because they are the literally the same volume..I wouldn't have noticed until something interesting happened the other day. I asked for a Super Grande but she gave it to me in the grande cup on accident, upon realizing her mistake she immediately pours it into a super grande cup, and behold, even to her surprise they are exactly the same! I came back the following day and actually poured a Super Grande into the Grande cup directly in front of the guy who worked there to explain, he stood there for a second staring at the cup then look up at me and said then.. "Why do you want to be a dick?"Admitted it sounds slightly funny.. but whats not funny... These smoothies are like totes the best gurrrl!!~`1one. Just kidding, but that's what y'all sound like. Anyways, the smoothies are, in fact, excellent and are composed of some usual, and delicious ingredients. Double banana chai is very good if you like chai, but I personally didn't really want a huge cup of it. I was a big fan of the açai, berry, and pollen-infused one because you could distinctly taste all those flavors basking in the creaminess that is the whole-milk base of these concoctions. (1st Ave and 1st St) On perusing the menu, I find the pricing to be reasonable for fresh squeezed juice ($2.99 for Chico 12 oz, $3.99 for Grande 16 oz, $4.99 for Super Grande 20 oz). I got the jr.'s skin fixer (pineapple, apple and cucumber) in the Grande. It was great -naturally sweet from the pineapple and apple juices. They didn't add any ice either so you're getting your money's worth. The place also advertised smoothies, hot soup and STRONG coffee. I will definitely come back for some of those things. read more

Tucked away in a small stand on the corner of 1st and Houston, stands Juicy Lucy which is your neighborhood go-to for cold pressed juice, acai bowls, and other morning wake up beverages. I stumbled upon this stand as I was stranded alone in the lower east side, waiting for my friends and for our brunch reservation to start. Being the first day of warm weather plus my traditional all black attire, I was feeling sweaty, thirsty and hungry. Not wanting to pick up a snack because I was about to eat brunch, I decided a cold pressed juice would suffice. The stand is small and almost hidden in plain sight. If you think you see it, you probably do. The menu is small:make your own juices, three kinds of bowls to choose from, coffee and some small snacks. I chose the Jr Skin Fixer, which is one of several set mixed juices on their menu. The wait was slow but can't put it past them as the stand is very small. The juice was OK. It was a mix of Apple, pineapple, and something else which probably isn't worth mentioning because I can't even taste it. The juice was warm, which wasn't helping in the heat but it was OK. Honestly just OK, nothing I would go out of my way for again. I might not have ordered the best thing on the menu, but the cashiers and juice barista were really nice and the snacks looks appetizing. read more

I just came back from a honeymoon in Hawaii where they are really big on Acai bowls . I missed them so much and didn't think I'd find them in NYC. Then again, it's NYC...we pretty much have everything. A Yelp search in my neighborhood brought up Juicy Lucy and I was ecstatic! They call it a RIO bowl and it goes for about $7.65 after tax. I miss this place. I don't live in Manhattan anymore, but even after years of absence I can still remember exactly how great I'd feel after drinking one of their smoothies with a shot of wheatgrass in it. Yes, wheatgrass-- which they pluck and grind up right in front of you. I swear you can't even taste it-- it'll be masked by the fruits you've selected. Their smoothies are super healthy-- you can tell they aren't just sugary milkshakes in disguise, and yet they taste better than your run-of-the mill juice drink. They use real fruit and not frozen prepackaged muck. I'm not a health nut or anything, but I always feel like a good smoothie after a night of sin helps balance everything out. Being able to customize definitely gives this place a leg up. There is also no place I know that can challenge Juicy Lucy's prices. On top of that, it's all real stuff. No syrups or chemicals.
