Our family visited Julia's while on vacation in SPI, we spent a rainy day and Bobz World and went to Julia's for lunch. From the outside Julia's looks like any small town diner and the inside isn't much different. They have two dining rooms. The one up front feels like an old soda shop, the one in the back feels like an old country cafe. The service was great, they were polite and attentive. The food was out of this world, I had the carne asada plate. The meat was cooked perfectly and full of flavor. Lastly this place is a bargain. I would come here again and again, the only thing wrong with this place is it is too far from home. read more

This local Mexican restaurant has been around for decades and it's a popular place for locals and visitors alike, since it's on the main road and on the way to South Padre Island. We decided to give it a try on a Friday since now they are open Thursday and Friday until 8p.m. instead of closing at 4p.m. I got the entomatadas plate with rice and beans and the overall flavor was pretty good. My husband got the fish plate that comes with salad and French fries. Depending on how much fish they have on any given day, they have an all you can eat fish deal. Our server Erika was friendly and helpful. Julia the owner was around and took a few minutes to talk to us. We went pretty early, 4p.m., so there weren't that many people there but as we were leaving, more people were starting to come in. The atmosphere is somewhat quiet and everything looked clean. My wife and I each ordered a chicken enchilada, a chicken entomatada, and a chicken enmolada. If you prefer a mole sauce, I'd recommend the chicken enmolada. If you order a tomato sauce, go with the entomatada. The chicken enchiladas were excellent. The chicken entomatadas were outstanding, even better than the enchiladas. My favorite, though, was the chicken enmoladas. My wife preferred the chicken entomatadas. I can see why Julia's is famous for their enchiladas. read more

We stopped in for a quick meal of flautas, refried beans, rice, nachos and salad. It all tasted good and fresh. Te restrooms were super clean, both men's and women's! Since it was 8:30pm or so when we stopped in, some of the lights had been turned off. But the woman working the counter had the lights turned on for our safety when we asked to use them. Nice! The front section facing the main road is set up like an old fashioned diner in red and white upholstery and ice cream signs up: Blue Bell! There are other cakes to choose from that are displayed on a turning fridge. The back is set up like a restaurant and now the menu made sense! I'm originally from South Texas living in the Midwest. We were looking for delicious authentic Tex Mex food while visiting SPI. This place was incredible!We ordered a variety of dishes. The chili cheese enchiladas, carne guisada and tacos were spot on. The flour tortillas were homemade and the salsa they served with chips was outstanding. I can tell when the beans are home made and when they are from a can and the ones they serve me were definitely from a can .. Again this is just me and my opinion.. We came with a small group to Julia's after church last Sunday. The food, and the service was bad. I cannot believe this restaurant is in the Valley. The Valley is known to me as a great place for some Mexican, and why not it is close to Mexico. The food tasted so plain, and the portions were very small. This had to be the smallest plate of enchiladas I have ever ate. They were those cheap quick made enchiladas. They just put them together real quick, and stick them in microwave to melt the cheese; Instead of baking them like you're suppose to. The waitress was not attentive she would come every 10 or 15 mins for 30 seconds to see if we needed something. She was so rushed I couldn't enjoy my meal. Talking so fast that my wife who is very fluent in Spanish couldn't understand her. She kept forgetting everything after several request it took her 20 mins to finally bring us chips and salsa. To top everything off they gave my son a cheeseburger with mayo; instead of a hamburger with mustard my son hates cheese and mayo. They took the cheeseburger, and scrapped off the cheese and mayo and gave back to him. By this time he was so hungry he didn't care. "Dad, you better give this place one star" One star for Julia's it's just plain bad, and does not belong in the Rio Grande Valley. read more

Love Julia's. Being on Keto, I wanted lots of meat. Had the South of the Border Burger and it was fabulous. About 1/2 lb good ground beef, lots of thick bacon, ham slice, avocado, cheese, tomato, onion and lettuce. Did not eat the huge bun. They have a extensive menu with tons of Mexican and Gringo choices. No reason for anyone to leave here hungry. Don't do the small cone ice cream though. The scoop is about the size of a Key Lime. read more

While visiting Brownsville, decided to step out and try Julia's instead of defaulting to the local IHOP or Denny's for breakfast. If you are interested in trying something off the beaten path, you should try Julia's. Ample seating, great service from our server Erica, an array of good breakfast options and reasonable prices. We were a party of three. My only regret was not sitting in the front of the restaurant. We sat in the back where the acoustics aren't great and the seating is able to accommodate larger parties and there was a large group there. As a result it was much noisier than you would expect. read more
