I normally don't write reviews but I'm truly shocked by my experience at Juliet. I've heard great things about this place and was so excited to take myself to brunch this morning. I arrived and there was no one at the front (just people behind the bar), so I wasn't sure if I was supposed to seat myself or wait. The restaurant was busy but definitely not packed, and the bar had several seats empty. After a few minutes, I went over to sit at the bar and a staff member quickly ran up and told me I should've waited to be sat and the bar is not self-seated. This was fine and an error on my part, but then I sat at the bar for 20+ minutes with 0 service from anyone. I literally watched a server sit down at the end of the bar and start talking to someone while I was still waiting. I finally flagged down who I think was the manager and asked if I could place my order. He took it, I received my drink in a timely fashion, but it took 30+ minutes to get my food. In the meantime, no one checked up on me, no one asked if I'd like another drink, and once I received my food, no one checked in. I got the shrimp biscuits and they were super dry and lacked flavor. After I finished my food, someone came to clear my plate and I asked them to bring the check (since I assumed this was my only opportunity to ask without having to flag another person down). They returned with my check and just plopped it on the bar without saying anything. I had overheard servers telling their tables that a 20% service fee was automatically applied, but had I not overheard this, I would have tipped on top of the total because no one explained it to me. The server ran my card and again said nothing when plopping the receipt down in front of me. I was really excited to have a fun brunch day and I'm really sad to be writing a negative review. This is a covid time dine in review. Went here today as of 12/12/2020. Juliet offers patio seating and they have four tables in a small garden close to the restaurant. All tables were very distant away so I felt super safe dining here. There were heaters, but the one close to ours was out of gas and they didn't refill it. Ughhh it was not comfortable eating in the cold haha Food here was amazing. We have shared a potato pancake for the table. It was three pieces and they easily made it to four with additional charge. There were three spreads with the pancake, and my favorite was the smokes salmon spread. So rich and creamy :P for my entree I got a brioche bun sandwich with juliet ham and fried egg. The bun was so buttery and soft. The ham and egg went so well with each other. My friend ordered different omelet and they both like their choices. If you're looking for well-done and classy, look no further than Juliet's. I've been here a couple times for breakfast and have been wow'd by the favor. The last I was there my partner and I ordered scrambled eggs, an olive omelette, and Captain Leo's Toast. Looks were very deceiving because you start thinking you could have made this at home. The presentation was very simple, but classy. All were very fresh and the flavors blended well together. The scrambled eggs came with toast and had bits of smoked salmon- very tasty! The olive omelette was something I've never had and was very solid. I don't know if I'd get it again (if offered), but it was well-done. Captain Leo's Toast was the star of the show. Very creamy and the tomatoes taste so fresh! All in all, this meal set me back $43 with coffee. They don't do tipping here, so that makes things a little easier to calculate. Dinner is a pre-fix menu with tickets. I haven't been but I imagine its pretty solid. The menu here frequently changes to what's in season, so I'd check online to see what you're going to get. The part I loved most is that they offered an assorted pastry basket for the table to share. I took my hubby here for his 35th birthday and we had the Les Pommes Sauvage menu with wine pairings. This consisted of the buttered endive, consommé, crepes, Pete + Jen's chicken, and tarte tatin. The dishes were so fresh and I loved the consommé and crepes! The crepes had several different types of mushrooms and as soon as it came out, it smelled delicious. The consommé had puffed rice, lemon, and lovage. Light and satisfying. The wine pairings were great! Our waitress did an amazing job of describing where each wine came from and the notes behind them. Love everything that Juliet stands for and I've been dying to try it out for the longest time. We were able to get on the waitlist on Yelp beforehand and only had to wait for about 5 mins after getting here for brunch. The eggs were by far the stars of the dishes we got. I ordered an omelette with guyere and topped with seasoned mushrooms ($15) and my boyfriend got the scrambled eggs ($14). We were both raving about the way that the eggs were cooked! Absolutely eggcellent! I didn't love the mushroom ontop of my omelette because it wasn't incorporated well with the omelette and was just merely a topping that I could've done without. The mushrooms were also cold which was a strange combination. The potato salad side that came with each entree wasn't my favorite. I think they could've done regular breakfast potatoes and knock that out of the park! The fresh greens was delicious. The pastry basket ($9) included earl grey scone, walnut & fig coffee cake, and cranberry and pistachio muffin. All were baked perfect and the flavors were . Did I think striped bass belonged in a fish taco? No, but it was a Special, and seafood is Juliet's thing, so I trusted their judgment. There was supposed to be slaw of some kind, avocado crema, jalapeños, and hot sauce on these things, but man were they BLAND. I found myself fishing around for jalapeños & cilantro, squeezing on lime, just trying to find some flavor. But the fish oil flavor of the bass skin was the only thing that stood out. My companion's vegetable risotto was very good, however. Strawberry shortcake for dessert was heavy on the balsamic and salt, but too light on the sweet. The coziest little spot in all of Somerville! The kitchen being right in the middle of the restaurant and the friendliest staff to ever exist, makes this place feel like home. There are only a few tables and there was lots of natural lightning from the windows during dinner. Food: 1.5/5 I had the Xenia feast of the gods meal. The spring appetizer was beautifully plated. However, there was something off (bitter) about the artichoke. The lamb entree with potatoes and salad was boring and unsatisfying. It was a large portion of meat, but my pieces were tough and had gristle/sinews that were difficult for me to cut through. It was lacking salt and had no acidity or heat either, despite some spices. I hate wasting food, but just didn't eat all of the lamb. The potatoes were good though! The olive oil cake looked 'ok..." but tasted good. They also gave us a tasty baklava at the end, which was the best part of the meal. Value: 1/5. The prix fixe menu was a bad value. In the Somerville/Cambridge area Oleana, Sarma, Pammy's, Alden and Harlow, even Tenoch have more complexity of flavor and are better values. Service: 5/5 The staff are gracious and kind. They gave a tiny poem/menu at the beginning of the dinner which was cute. Overall, I like the idea of this gratuity-free location. Food: A very interesting menu that this breakfast venue created. If you are a type of foodie that likes to try different food combinations, this place is definitely a place to try. The meal I ordered was something I was not used to. It was delicious however I found some parts of it a bit overpowering (maybe if they put less on the plate I wouldn't feel obligated to eat it all haha) but I don't regret ordering what I ordered at all! Cost: A bit expensive for breakfast. For example, the caramelized grapefruit was a couple dollars. A bit steep but it was delicious though! Just be aware that it is the cost of both the food and experience that you are paying for. Environment: Very quaint. Although the exterior of the restaurant doesn't really stand out, the interior is something to definitely take a look at. They utilized antique items to decorate the place and it worked out very well! Service: The server was amazing! Everyone in the restaurant seemed to really enjoy working there and that was reflective of the attitude they gave to the customers. Uniqueness: I did not know of this until the end as the bill was about to get paid but they do not accept tips! It was such a surprise, especially because they did such an awesome job. For dinner, the risotto and the Niçoise salad were both excellent. Solid 4.5/5.0. The earl grey scone that I received was also yummy and it was the best focaccia bread I've tried in a long time! Stopped by here for brunch on a Saturday morning, and it was a really pleasant experience! We were greeted by really friendly staff and were seated within ten minutes. In the meantime, we grabbed a coffee from the cafe section up front, which also had a display of amazing looking pastries (we ended up only trying a blueberry pecan coffee cake). For the meal itself, we started a chocolate tahini toast and bruleed grapefruit. The chocolate tahini toast was creamy in an almost peanut-butter like texture but without being too sweet and was a great decision. My girlfriend and I weren't particularly impressed by the grapefruit, but we've been thinking about trying bruleed grapefruit for a long time and it just seemed like a good place. Nothing wrong with the dish itself, but probably just wasn't for us. For main courses, we got the artichoke risotto and a cranberry toast. Honestly, the risotto tasted great, but was way too water and had almost a porridge-like consistency. That being said, if they had called it artichoke porridge, I probably wouldn't have this complaint. Still recommend. The toast was another impulse order since the mix of cheese (ricotta?), cranberry, and toast sounded great. Having an egg on top of that was a little strange though. Very beautiful restaurant but as some of the reviews said I found the food underwhelming. To be very fair, I want to state that I came here for a brunch party where there was a set family style prix fixe menu for 10 people. That said all the dishes on the prix fixe menu are on their regular menu. The prix fixe menu included assorted toasts (toasts with different toppings-some include goat cheese spread, hummus spread, smoked salmon, etc), omelette with mushroom and gruyere and herbs, mussels baked in escargot butter, and kale caesar salad. The assorted toasts were lovely but this dish was followed up with a plate of mostly all bread and a few mussels (which each side of the table was expected to share with 5 people). The mussel dish really killed the vibe unfortunately. It's too bad this happened because the mussels itself were delicious but sharing 10 baby mussels among five people was devastating. The omelette dish was good but slightly bland. The mushrooms on the omelette were my favorite and the cheese was not due to its rubberiness. The kale caesar salad with charred cabbage, brioche and espelette was delicious but unfortunately was served last. The staff was friendly and very accommodating but I felt like our brunch could have been a lot better with meal organization and more flavor. Also, 10 girls paid $30 a person and left hungry. I've wanted to come to Juliet for sooooooo long! I was actually in the neighborhood because of Milk Bar opening, but the line was hideous. So I Yelped to see what else is good in the hood (love you Yelp)! Arrived a little after 10:30 on Saturday, but they were already full house with about 10 people before me. Thankfully, I was dinning SOLO and got seated immediately. Juliet has a French bistro vibe, a bit buzzy but in a very good way. They also had The Beatles playing in the background when I dined. The waiters were super nice and attentive--made me feel very special. In 2016, my favorite magazine rated this as one of the best new restos in the U.S., and I could not agree more. I got the Turmeric and Nigella seed scone ($4) and a latte ($3.5) to start. The scone had a thick coat of coarse sugar on top, which gave it a really nice texture when you take a bite. I also had the Duck Hash ($17), their daily special that day that featured duck confit, caramelized onion, crispy potatoes and two perfectly cooked- runny eggs. Two words: GET THIS! Broke the yolk, and the GOLDEN SAUCE came down like lava from a slow volcanic eruption over the bed of crispy potatoes and confit. Almost positive that I heard the angels sing. FYI: they don't accept tips, because tips were already factored into the price on their menu (LOVE fair wage policy)! So, you would think a place literally around the corner from my apartment that has $1 would automatically get 5 stars from me, right? Not automatically, no. But Juliet does get its 5 stars, but not just for its oysters. I will admit, when Juliet first opened, I did not give it much of a chance. I came during an odd hour during its first week, when it had not quite found its legs. I was slightly disappointed at the time. I came back about a month ago when the weather was hot, I was starving, and the draw of the oysters was too much for this girl to take. I went in, and was so glad I did. The oysters were great, and they are always experimenting with new stuff, which I like. And even though I am a girl of simple tastes, if they want to amuse my bouche with a delicacy of some sort, who am I to say no? I am just glad this is not the kind of place where I would be worried about dipping my fingers in the lemon soup because I confused it with the finger bowl. And while I still get stumped that this this a tip-free establishment, my servers have reassured me more than once that the profit sharing is amazing and I shouldn't worry about it. We visited Juliet for the first time last weekend for their summer Beach Rose menu/production. We'd walked by many times, and it had been on my list for several months, especially since it was on Bon Appetit's Best New Restaurants list. The food was incredible, and I totally support their profit-sharing and livable-wage models (I couldn't believe it's currently the only restaurant in MA that operates that way). I was excited to try this place because of the good reviews on Yelp, but I was honestly a little let down. I had the Captain Leo's Breakfast ($16), which included toast with cream cheese and sliced tomatoes, a small greens salad, a soft boiled egg, and potato salad. The potato salad was very hard and tasted too raw, and everyone else at my table who had it as part of their dish thought the same. Everything else was only decent. My americano had a nice layer of crema though and was pretty good tasting. Service was also friendly and reasonably fast. I probably won't be bad because the food quality was lower than expected for the prices. They don't take reservations for brunch; wait was about 30 minutes on a Saturday at noon. read more
