I came here for lunch with some coworkers (one of which is a fellow Yelper) and the consensus is that we'll be back! Located at the corner of 3rd Street and Massachusetts Avenue (Northeast), it's a popular spot on Capitol Hill for a casual and quick sit-down. The spot is easily walkable from Union Station. You order at the counter and then can find seating in the back if you choose to dine in. There's also patio seating. Since it was our first time visiting, we asked the cashier for his recommendations and there were so many great options to choose from. The salad bowl servings are huge - definitely a good value. They have a baked goods display, and the seasonal churro Cruffin (croissant muffin) caught our eye so we couldn't resist trying it. It was delicious! Think of everything you like about a croissant but make it puffier, taller, and fill it with goodness (aka cream filling). Other than them bringing the food to your table, it's mostly a DIY type of place - fill your own water cups at the fill station, grab your own cutlery, etc. I ordered the Fungi Philly ($19) which is basically a vegetarian Philly cheesesteak - instead of meat, you get mushrooms. I'm a mushroom lover so it was perfect! The sandwich came with your choice of a side - fries, homemade Old Bay chips, or a side salad. I opted for the fries which came out hot and fresh, was a good serving size (about a cup), and served with ketchup. The sandwich was hearty (I filled up on the fries and was able to save half of the sandwich for later). It's served on a brioche hoagie, which ate soft so I think the sandwich could have used a little more texture, but overall I enjoyed the local ingredients and flavor of the sandwich. I would get it again, but there also also lots of other menu items that I look forward to trying. One coworker ordered the Turkey Avocado BLT and it was ginormous - they really pile on the meat! I love that it's a simple walk from Union Station, and it's so many things in one. It's a bistro, a bar, a bakery... it's delightful! I will say though, parking around there is a pain in the neck... so metro or Uber if you can. I went in around lunch time to meet with colleagues and every table was occupied except for the long one in the back. The bar also had availability, but that wasn't going to work for us. I was first, so I got settled while waiting for the others. The staff happily gave the Wi-Fi password when I asked, and it was nice. The place was really poppin. I wonder if it's busier during dinner and happy hour time? Once the others arrived, we ordered. That's done at the front -- when I came in, there was a chaotic line. But slightly after 1:00, the line had completely disappeared. I was debating between the turkey chili and veggie tacos, and opted for the latter. I couldn't resist the GIANT grinch cruffin that was peppermint flavored. It came first, so I finished it before my tacos came haha. It was delicious, though I wish I asked the staff to heat it for just a few seconds. The tacos came with black beans and rice... and they were LOADED. Ordering is done as soon as you walk in, and then you can seat yourself at the bar or any of their tables. We went on a rainy Wednesday afternoon and the place was absolutely packed. Service is super friendly and fast. I ordered a latte and even though I got it plain, the espresso had hints of caramel that just made my tongue dance. It was so good that I had to find the source right away and was happy to hear they use local roaster Commonwealth Joe for al their coffee products. They are famous for their mile high cruffins and even had seasonal Grinch ones on display, but since it was lunchtime I decided to go with their mojo pork rice bowl which came topped with salsa, sour cream, rice, and black beans. Before I could even make way to my seat at the back of this rowhouse, I was being served! Loved the quick and seamless service, especially at a busy time. I didn't find the bowl especially delicious but it was warm, filling, and comforting on a rainy day. They have free quick wifi and a large patio for nice days. Junction was close to both the office and my hotel, so I came here two days in a row for dinner. Good thing the food was great! Would definitely stop by in the future to try the pastries. For my first night, I went with the healthy option - the sesame kale salad with chicken. My jaw got a solid workout from all the fiber in the bowl, the kale, purple cabbage, red pepper, carrots. Lots of veggies, though I should have asked for some more dressing on the side, it all got kind of dry after a while. My second night, I went for the turkey avocado BLT which was BY FAR the better of the two. Served on two gloriously thick slices of toasted white bread, it had generous layers of turkey and bacon, avocado, and mayo. Not the neatest thing to consume and you do have to unhinge your jaw to get everything in one bite, but I loved it and it definitely powered me through a late night of working. I came here with friends on a Saturday for a quick brunch since you're able to order at the counter and then get served. I'm not sure if the day we came was just abnormally understaffed, but the wait time for our food was almost an hour. There weren't even that many customers inside, but there only seemed to be 2-3 people working. I got the Short Stack Biscuit ($17), which has braised short rib, mustard onions, white cheddar, and scrambled egg on a cheddar chive biscuit. The short rib was very tender, but it was also super oily. I wish there has been something more acidic on the biscuit to cut the fat. The biscuit sandwich was still good, but it ended up being much more heavy and salty than expected. The dish is also supposed to be served with home fries sautéed with peppers & onions, but they ran out of vegetables and didn't give any heads up, so it ended up being A LOT of potato. The menu was pretty extensive for such a place, which was a relief. They did not have pour coffee when I arrived, but I was able to get some mocha. It was tasty but needed extra sugar. I ordered the Turkey BLT + chips & it was pretty decent. I think the bacon was the true star of the sandwich. It was thick cuts of bacon. I also ordered the Friday special, which was $7 spiked cider or mulled wine. I ordered the spiked cider. I was pleasantly surprised at how yummy it was. I ordered it hot, and I am sure that made a huge difference. The atmosphere itself can be cozy & average noise, but will quickly turn into a bar atmosphere after 5pm. This place might be good for meat eaters, thus the reviews - the cooking meat certainly smelled good when we came in. But my friend and I both ordered vegan entrees for lunch on a weekday and they were incredibly disappointing. Which is unfortunate, because we picked this place specifically because it offered several good-seeming vegetarian/vegan options, but if you're a vegetarian, I would 100% skip this place. I wish I had remembered to take photos while we were there, but portions weren't just disappointing - they were laughable. Again, if you're serving meat you can get away with leaner portions because meat is super filling (and a more expensive ingredient) but my tofu stir fry came with, count em, three one-bite pieces of tofu, a cup of rice, and some mushy veggies. My friend ordered a quinoa and felafel bowl and there were like 3 or four tiny, bite-sized spheres of felafel. Both these dishes were around $20 and they were portioned like side dishes. Then there was the quality and flavor. NOPE. Half the veggies in my dish were broccolini, which I can't digest, so I set them aside and I can't judge them - that one is on me b/c I saw broccolini elsewhere on the menu and didn't ask. What was left was cut up - I'm going to say matchsticks, slice is too generous - of bell pepper and onion. They were overcooked and slathered in an oily, viscous, flavorless sauce that tasted like it came out of a jar. My rice was just plain, boring jasmine and it was overcooked. The tofu was fried and yet somehow had no flavor, including the batter, and wasn't crispy. I don't think there was a single seasoning in the batter I mean, this wasn't just bad. It was gross. I ate very little of it and ended up eating a full size baguette sandwich at Pret at Union Station immediately after. If you have to get a second lunch, that's pretty bad. My friend was sorely disappointed with her felafel. It was bland. She said she could make better at home. There are tons of places in DC that sell better tasting, better portioned felafel for less than half the price (like the felafel place at the Wharf). Again, this place is well-reviewed, and my theory is that this has to be related to the meat dishes. As a pescatarian looking to eat more strictly vegetarian, I am never coming back here. read more

This is such a charming cafe near Capitol Hill. I've been to the Alexandria location numerous times, so I expected good coffee and good food. My expectations were definitely met. After some meetings, I met some friends here on a Friday for lunch. I got my hot coffee and GF choc banana bread (so chocolatey) before heading back to the office and they got more substantial sandwiches and fries. All disappeared quickly except for the coffees that needed some time to cool. I felt quite bad for the person behind the counter. Although the lunch rush was beginning in earnest, he was taking the orders and delivering the orders around the room (after ordering, you get a number to put on your table, and the food is delivered to where you are). Ordering was fast, but deliveries took much more time. On this particular visit, it was a bright, cool nearly autumn day and I saw more patrons sitting at the outdoor tables. A cute little spot near Capitol Hill to grab lunch or an afternoon pick me up. They have plenty of seating and free WiFi so ideal for working if you don't mind some background chit chatting. I was going for a morning pastry but unfortunately they were transitioning to their fall menu so had very limited stock in the pastry case. So I was kind of 'forced' to try the internet famous cruffin - croissant dough baked in a muffin tin and filled with cream. I got the churros flavor because the mini chocolate-covered churro on top looked cute. However, the churro itself was kind of dry and hard. The cruffin itself was delicious. The dough was soft with many layers, not as flakey and crunchy as a Kouign-Amann. The sugar sprinkled on top added a fun texture. They definitely did not skimp on the filling - about 70% of this pastery was cinnamony pastry cream. It was a fun experience and worth trying if you are into creamy desserts. This is one of our favorite regular spots for brunch, coffee, or meeting up with friends visiting the city! Junction is a counter-service restaurant but in a way that provides the perfect mix of the experience one has at a full-service joint and a coffee shop. The service is top notch, food is delicious, and an incredible atmosphere is provided via modern decor and natural sunlight. While I've had many meals at Junction in the last few years, I got the Huevos Rancheros during my most recent visit. Like all the dishes I've had, it was super tasty and appropriately portioned. Junction is one of those places where you always want to repeat what you got the last time but not more than wanting to try what else they have, because everything is awesome! Service was fast and our waitress was incredibly sweet! The chicken chorizo burrito was very flavorful- 4.5/5! Despite appearing to be a bit smaller, it was quite filling- I barely finished half of the hash browns that came with the dish. I wish there was more of the cilantro mayo, since the pico de gallo and beans didn't seem to be seasoned so they didn't add much flavor. The brisket biscuit was delicious- 4/5. We loved the cheddar chive biscuit, but the brisket itself was a little dry. I wish they had added a spoonful of the juices it had been cooked in at the last minute to keep the dish from being too dry. I was obsessed with this place! My friend and I came for happy hour and they had awesome specials. Their happy hour is M-F, 3-7pm and it is not one to miss! Most of their beers, wines, and cocktails were $5-6 which was a great steal. They also had some bar snacks on the menu, but we just had to get a side of Mac n cheese after smelling it from the next table. First time here liked the options on the menu and wanted to try it out. Liked the fact that they had Vietnamese coffee, can't really find to many places that makes it. Ordered the roasted chicken sandwich but wanted a breakfast item, came to late no biggie. Ordered the sandwich that typically comes with bacon and opted for NO bacon, well got the bacon anyway. Barista/cashier also forgot to make my drink that I ordered but remembered after I continued to stand there that I ordered something else. Ordered the Vietnamese coffee with oat milk but got whole milk instead also was shocked at the ice/drink ratio that I got with my drink. If I was allergic or sensitive to both the milk and bacon it could've been a bad thing but because those are simply preferences that I either paid extra for or asked not to have im not really tripping too hard. The sandwich was rubbery and flavorless the bread was nice and toasty and the arugula was soggy and pointless. Wouldn't get it again. As for the drink it was pretty good once flavors started to settle in but like I had said there was just to much ice I had very little sips and finished the drink quickly. I give it 3 stars because my first time wasn't all that great but I'm sure sitting down and ordering something else would be a better experience. Our visit at Junction Bistro was a long time coming! After craving the bucatini pasta for months we decided to give this place a try. The ambiance is very nice and spacious, I love their modern decor throughout the establishment. They also have plenty of seating on their outdoor patio. Now onto the food-- we ordered a side of their sweet potato fries which was absolutely delicious! For drinks we opted in for spritz cocktails, which were part of their happy hour deal. I was a bit disappointed as it had no flavor of Elderflower, instead the drink was watered down. For entrees we ordered the bucatini pasta and hot chicken sandwich. The pasta claimed to have oyster mushrooms but I can assure you I did not see any in my dish. Pasta was good but not worth the $19 price tag. What gets worse is the fact that we were dining right next to the kitchen so we were able to see the preparations going on behind the scene. The lady who was prepping our food was not wear gloves. I am pretty sure this is a health hazard!!! I even saw her tossing my salad with her bare hands (no utensils included). Since we already paid for our food ahead of time I felt obligated to eat. There's a mural in the back, an open kitchen, and restrooms (each with a changing table inside) off to the side. 2) Food: I've only been for breakfast, but their menu is diverse and the pastries fresh. The chocolate croissant is large and with a good chocolate to dough ratio. They brew Commonwealth Joe Coffee from Arlington and it's good. My latte was creamy and balanced. 3) Service: They bring the Northern Virginia charm. Each staff member genuinely greeted me and were attentive. If you need a place to work, go here.
