Recently enjoyed an evening on Juniper's patio on a beautiful fall day. I also took a peek at the inside, and it's all exposed-brick-charming. We started with cocktails. I got one of their bourbon cocktails which was a solid ok. In retrospect, I feel like at a spot called Juniper, I should have veered toward gin and would should I come again. For our starter, we adhered to our if-there's-brussels-sprouts-on-the-menu-we-must-order-them rule and got the brussels. Served with a lovely sprinkling of chevre, the brussels sprouts are a solid choice. The star of the show, though, was my main. I got the kale and eggs with salmon added (for a $9 upcharge). It was a beautiful blend of kale, bacon, pistachios, squash, and raisins with two sunny side up eggs and the added seared salmon. It was fresh and oh-so-flavorful. My husband wanted to try something new. We decided on Juniper. It was early in the day, so it was nice and calm. Service was good. Our server was super nice, and she knew her stuff. She let me use her hair tide. We ordered the Bison Burger, and I was a bit hesitant about the sweet onion jam, and so I asked her to put it on the side. It was a bad decision because I put some and wow it was so delicious the meat mixed with the sweet jam went together so well. The kids' pizza was pretty big. Made a reservation this past Sunday for a dinner with some family....cool spot downtown Boise with lots of seating inside, bar, upstairs and outside. Upon arrival got seated right away and glad we made a reservation because this place was packed on a Sunday night. However once seated that's were the wheels started to loosen in a few aspects of our experience. 1) Once seated the hostess informed us that Sundays are Happy hour all day on a spectate part of the menu. Looked over the menu she put in front of us and though "wow" this is a great deal. Dinner drinks were 2 for $12 and the pizza prices were $12 as well. 2) We were sat upstairs which was fine, but I felt like we were in no man's land. It took over 10 mins just for our waitress to come over. We ordered some drinks and appetizers. 4) Water that was brought to the table was extremely lukewarm and no ice. 3) After what seemed like a long time the appetizers showed up and still no drinks. 4) Now after at least 15+ mins our drinks arrived but she forgot one and that took another almost 10mins. A little training for the staff and ensure making a drink on the fly for a customer is pretty key. Now after our food arrived this was the best part of the dining experience. We loved every type of pizza we ordered and everyone shared a little bit. Great crust and tasty toppings on the pizzas with great flavor combinations. Additionally while still thirsty I ordered a beer as well and that even took over 10 mins to get. I would for sure come back here for the food and atmosphere. But the reason for the 3 star was not only the lack luster experience in service it was the misleading information about the happy hour. Once we hit our bill we had a small sticker shock. After inquiring we were informed that on Sundays the happy hour is only for the drinks. So when your expecting to pay $12 for a pizza and the average was $18-$20 range. Food was delicious as I stated before just didn't have the greatest of feelings about the service or questionable happy hour. I recently revisited Juniper for dinner after a long hiatus, mainly due to past service issues, but I'm delighted to report that our recent experience was exceptional. We kicked off the evening with two cocktails, and I chose a gin concoction that arrived with a single large ice cube, making it an instant hit. For our appetizer, we ordered the truffle fries, which were not only delicious but also creatively presented in hefty wedge chunks, offering a generous amount of potato goodness. We inquired about their house-made ketchup, which they no longer served, but were pleased to hear it's making a comeback due to popular demand - trust me, it's worth it, even for someone like me who isn't typically a fan of ketchup. Moving on, we tried the sweet strawberry salad, which, while tasty, didn't offer any particularly outstanding flavors but had a well-balanced profile. Finally, for the main course, we shared the shrimp pasta. It was undeniably delicious, though a bit heavy on the Kalamata olive flavor, to the point where the olive juice in the sauce made it overly salty and overpowering. On the bright side, the shrimp were cooked to perfection. Juniper's ambiance has always been a strong point for me. The charming brick walls, candlelit tables, and an elegant bar create the perfect setting for a relaxing and enjoyable evening, whether it's a romantic date or a get-together with a friend. I'm glad I gave Juniper another chance, and I'm looking forward to more visits in the future. I want to try their pizzas! Right kind of vibe, though the food and service was just okay. A lot of items were over-saturated and looked better in presentation over taste. My favorite item was the Kale & Eggs Salad - not your typical salad but had lots of good flavor. What caught me off guard was that they offered to split the dishes for us, then charged a split fee for every item we split with no heads up about the extra fee. We came during good weather season so got to sit outside and enjoy live music. Would come back for chill drinks and good vibe, but not necessarily the food. read more

Hidden amongst the 8th and Idaho restaurant collection, is this modern comfortable American restaurant and bar. If you don't do anything else, you have to get the rosemary truffle fries! The hibiscus margarita was my favorite but all their cocktails are perfectly shaken. Steak, fish, pasta, pizzas, and salads, you can't go wrong. Unexpectedly fantastic. Mostly empty restaurant on a very busy street and had the best food of our trip. For food we got the Burrata Salad with Salmon and the Spicy Linguini with Clams. The burrata was super creamy and the salmon was perfect - crispy outside, moist inside. Not oily at all. The linguini had great flavor with some kick. The corn and olives went really well with it.  We also tried the pesto gnocci which was super pillowy. Good cocktail menu with lots of options. I got a Bee's Wings (lavender honey goodness) and my wife got the Berry Burlesque (fruity herby).  Friendly staff, nice interior. Felt like we were going to fall off the slippery high top seats but everyhing else was great. read more

You definitely pay for the ambiance here more than the food, in my opinion. The food wasn't bad, but my friend and I both got the sweet potato gnocchi, and the portion was really disappointing for the price. I didn't feel like the quality matched the price enough for the quantity to be so small. We were both done with our meal well before our friends were. I also tried one of their mocktails, as did my other friend, and we both agreed that neither had a lot of flavor to them despite the ingredients. If you do go, I do recommend the stuffed mushrooms. Again, the portion isn't great, but they're really good. The bread is also good! All in all, I'd rather have spent $16 on an entree at my favorite Italian spot in Boise than this spot. These people know how to put a meal together, and combine the perfect flavors. I've been here a few times now, and I can't understand why this place isn't overloaded at lunch time. I get it, it's a bit fancier than the average place, but you are missing out if you dismiss this place. They take something as basic as Kale and Eggs and makes it mouthwatering. I've had it twice, because it's THAT GOOD, and it's one of the very few items on their menu that is gluten free. The other item I recently had there was the Paella, and it's a big serving, so be prepared to be stuffed. It's loaded with seafood, veggies, and wonderful flavors that pair up perfectly. This makes for excellent leftovers, so no worries if you can't finish it. Ohhhh, and the steamed clams are incredibly. I was expecting the clams to come in a broth, but instead, they came in this thick soup/sauce that was spicy and heavenly. I ended up dipping fries in it, since I couldn't have their bread due to being GF. I can't speak to the rest of the menu, but the outdoor seating is lovely in the summer, the staff is very accommodating, knowledgeable, and polite, and the food is delectable. My superstitious mother always told me to be careful how I choose to ring in the New Year because it would have a detrimental effect on how the entire year turns out. Maybe she was right. And let's admit - 2020 is anything but fun as of right now. Maybe it could have been better, for me, at least, if I had chosen to eat elsewhere on December 31 2019... So for some reason my husband and I decided to leave the comfort of our humble abode to tred downtown to spend the new year eve. I didn't want to get too crazy so we decided Juniper seemed like a nice, calm restaurant to enjoy a late dinner. They had a limited menu for New Year, so there really wasn't much choice we had. The most appealing item was the Duck Ramen. It was $18 for a serving, which is alright based on the concept and atmosphere of the eatery. I was super stoked for the dish, then I got it. Terrible. Absolute joke of a dish. My very traditional Asian mother would be mortifed. First of all, there was maybe 7 tiny shredded pieces of dehydrated duck confit on my ramen. Second, there were hardly any ramen noodles. Third, they packed in the mushrooms to hide the fact there were no noodles. It was almost ALL mushrooms. Just sad sad SAD. I couldn't even eat more than 3 bites. If my husband didn't eat it out of pity I would have asked for it to be removed off the ticket. Okay, but then... What better way to make up for a disappointing dish than with dessert, right? You can't go wrong with that! Well, or so I though. Again, limited menu so we had to go with the peanut butter pie. I wish they added "store bought" on the description. I've had better desserts from Walmart and say better from Albertsons, a damn supermarket bakery! Shameful. Absolutely disgraceful. I may have been able to give a second star out of pity if the service had been good. But our waitress didn't really seem like she knew what she was doing. It was a busy night so I tried to give her the benefit of the doubt but she rolled her eyes when I asked for the dessert menu. It was dark in there, but it happened. I be seein things you don't know I can see. Never returning here again. I hope others are able to have a fabulous experience. I would consider giving Juniper a second shot however DT Boise has so many superb eateries to offer, and I ain't here for a long time, I'm here for a good time, especially when it comes to my food. read more

I had higher expectations for this place, so I left slightly disappointed. First, the good things- the service was wonderful and the restaurant looked beautiful. We don't drink, but if I did, I'd probably like to come back just to sit at the bar during happy hour. Howeverrrr... The restaurant was freezing inside (everyone was wearing their coats). The portion sizes were small enough to leave you hungry when you left. The skin on the trout wasn't crispy at all and the beef risotto was bland. For our $80 dinner, I just had higher hopes. Juniper's back, baby!! Back and better than ever too! Remodeled inside with the star of the show being their brand new pizza oven on display for everyone to see. I didn't get a picture of the pizza oven this time around, so you'll have to go and check it out yourself but it is, dare I say it ... sexy. The pizza that comes out of it is really good too. My mom isn't a crust eater but she ate this crust, so that says a lot. We got the Pesto, prosciutto, and burrata pizza- it also had olives, artichoke, roasted garlic, arugula, and a balsamic reduction. SO MUCH YUM. If fried calamari is you thing, you'll love it here- the texture is perfect and the dipping sauce is addicting. The kale and eggs salad is a classic juniper dish that I'm glad they kept! Added salmon for an extra $9 but it also had pancetta in it which was my favorite part. The roasted cauliflower and steamed clams were both amazing and just paired so well together. Both of the sauces in these dishes had a really nice spice that built on the more you ate- I swear they complimented each other so well. The roasted focaccia bread that came with the steamed clams was soooo delicious. The Juniper house salad is a really good deal listed on their menu at $9! The black garlic balsamic dressing was recommended and absolutely did not disappoint at all! Loved it! The bar at Juniper is just as good as I remembered pre-covid! This was our first time trying this upscale restaurant. We were a party of 7 having a birthday celebration. First. let me give you the positive experience portion. The service was good. Started off with a young male waiter and after our drink order, a female took over for him. She was attentive and did a fine job. The calamari appetizer was fine, and my Mom's pesto pasta was fine. That's the end of the positive. Ordered a gin and tonic from the young man and he neglected (the female waitress told us) to tell us that it had a special house ingredient (can't remember what it was, but it made the gin and tonic orange and bitter). We also got some margaritas on the rocks, and they were not good, very sour. Ordered the Garlic Oil Focaccia appetizer. Focaccia should be a light, bubbly, sponge like texture bread, but what we got was what appeared to be the 4 heels of a loaf of white bread with some oil and light seasoning on top. It literally looked like 4 pieces of toast, and it was very dry and tasteless. Yuck! I ordered the Carbonara Linguine which was also a disaster. Carbonara is pasta tossed with raw egg, pancetta, cheese, and other herbs. Typically, you toss the hot pasta with those ingredients, and then let it cook together so that the egg cooks and the dish is creamy with a slight smokey (pancetta) flavor. I got linguine with zero pancetta taste and a fried egg on top. This dish was $18 dollars. The biggest bust was the $25 dollar Paella that 2 people ordered. Paella is a traditionally slow cooked rice dish that has a very unique slow cooked creamy, chewy texture with some type of protein on top. Ours was supposed to be seafood. Paella is usually pricey at restaurants because it's a time-consuming dish to make and has a very rich flavor with an array of seafood on top. What we got was a very obviously precooked Spanish rice tossed with a couple different seafood pieces. Not even close to the real thing, and very overpriced. My husband and I split a Cesar salad and it was saturated in dressing. Our bill was about $400 dollars including tip. Dinner house prices with Diner style food. Very disappointed. read more

Stopped by for some drinks and munchies on a weekend food crawl. The vertigo cocktail made of averna, house made ginger beer and lime was super refreshing on a hot day. The ginger beer has a nice strong zing to it which I loved. The bread came out warm and the garlic pesto dip was delish! Fried calamari was done perfectly. Just the right amount of batter for crunch but nice and tender on the inside. Went great with the arugula. Restaurant has a nice modern feel and lighting is good for romantic dinner. A great place for an out-of-towner to have dinner in downtown Boise featuring good Italian-accented American food. The homemade tonic water was the most notable part of the meal. The three of us probably had two each of them. The drinks, the food, and the atmosphere all clearly had a lot of thought put into them. The staff was very helpful, communicating back and forth with the kitchen to accommodate our party's various dietary restrictions. If I could have just one suggestion it would be to incorporate more local ingredients and style into the entrees (or just have that more clearly marked on the menu). I think the restaurant already attracts the exact type of customer that would really appreciate that. read more

I can appreciate there was an emergency, but I feel with the service we received, at least one item should have been taken off. With 2 for 1 drinks and some great apps, we got pork belly fries and then dinner was good.We had vegan ramen and a happy hour burger, and pastrami dip sandwich. All were delicious and the space so cool and chill. I'd definitely take drinks here over dinner; the food was good but not wildly excellent. We were passing through Boise and looking for a good place to eat on a Saturday evening. Juniper had decent reviews and was close to our lodging so we decided to give it a try. The atmosphere inside was chilly and largely empty but the outdoor area facing 8th Street had a much better vibe. Our wait person Anna was pleasant and attentive without hoovering. My husband and I each ordered a glass of wine from a very limited menu; not bad but not great. On to ordering, I chose the Chèvre Salad with a salmon add on ($21). Anna asked how I'd like my salmon prepared and, being from the PNW and having ordered salmon in restaurants many times, I was surprised by this question I had never been asked. This isn't steak; it's fish. If it's not sushi grade, it should be cooked until it flakes, which is what I requested. I expected the salad to have a respectable amount of its namesake but it arrived with only a sprinkling of cheese. The salmon was dry and overcooked so I was grateful for the extra salad dressing to pour over it. My husband ordered the Idaho Trout ($24) which he enjoyed but I would have been disappointed by. The plate contained a lot of potatoes topped by only half a trout fillet. The apple-fennel slaw -- quite salad sounding -- was only garnish so no actual vegetable was included. First time coming. 3:30-4 on a Thursday and no one in here! Beautiful restaurant & welcoming staff! Sheridan helped us out and was wonderful and so nice! The calamari was a little disappointing because we were expecting it to be like the other pictures on yelp. Hopefully they can make it crispier or change it for the future. Potatoes were great.
