First time coming. 3:30-4 on a Thursday and no one in here! Beautiful restaurant & welcoming staff! Sheridan helped us out and was wonderful and so nice! The calamari was a little disappointing because we were expecting it to be like the other pictures on yelp. Hopefully they can make it crispier or change it for the future. Potatoes were great. Last Friday night we tried Juniper again in hopes for a better evening. We didn't plan anything after dinner this time so we could make certain to get food. This experience was much different than the first. We arrived with reservations at 6:30 early. We were seated promptly downstairs vs upstairs last time. It was was not as loud and we could carry a conversation across the table. We only had 4 of us on this trip, so that could have helped. The Food: We ordered the Rosemary Fries to share. They were seasoned well, and perfectly crispy. I ordered the lamb burger with bacon, my wife ordered the salmon. The salmon, she said, was very good. I requested my lamb be medium, but it turned out to be well done. The burger had good flavors that complemented each other well. If the burger was not dry, it would have been perfect. The salad was not bad, but way over drenched and saturated. I raised the star count by one because this experience was night and day different over the first visit. But because my burger was over cooked and dry I couldn't give them a 4th. read more

Just tried it out for the first time, and I loved the ambience and apps! The brussels sprouts were some of the BEST I've had- pancetta, Caesar, garlic, parsley, Parmesan, and more. I was so excited to hear that Juniper had reopened! Unfortunately, this was probably the worst food I've had in Boise. I was sure they had a new chef but our server assured me they didn't. They still have almost all the same menu items that they did before closing. However, they "revamped" everything. I had the best mushroom risotto I'd ever had here last summer. I ordered the same thing tonight and it was the weirdest "risotto" I've ever had. I've never known a risotto to have tomatoes, peas and pesto. Yet it was bland. I had to add so much salt and pepper to make it somewhat edible. I was glad the server suggested I add salmon to it because otherwise I would still be hungry. I ate the over cooked salmon which wasn't terrible. Just dry. I ate more of the risotto than I normally would have because I hadn't eaten all day. My friend had the trout that she used to order and said it was also very different and flavorless. Our server said she would discount our check. I told her that wasn't necessary. That I just wanted to give feedback. She insisted. AND THEN.... came back and said that the manager wouldn't let her discount it because "nothing was wrong." I'm giving them two stars because our server did a great job but my friend and I both agreed that we wouldn't be coming back. Such a bummer. read more

I was not informed we would be charged $2 extra for each dish we shared. The service was great... but I would have liked to be informed. came in here during lunch and man was it fantastic. They weren't too busy so service was very good. They had a large menu with lots of different choices. We went with the ramen and salmon entrees. Don't go in thinking traditional japanese ramen. They did their own bold twist to it and came out tasting great. The duck was well flavored and crispy almost like a pulled pork style. They had a healthier type of wheat noodle which was a nice change. Overall great! The salmon was covered with sweet honey glaze with carrots and brussels sprouts. They either fry it or sear it but what ever they did to it, it was probably the best tasting brussels sprouts i've had. Try to get a seat upstairs. A bit more intimate with less traffic from the bar. Try the house made ketchup. Good stuff. And if you make it to brunch, let out your belt and try the chicken in a biscuit. The fried chicken is tasty and crisp and the sausage gravy thick and flavorful. Service is nice but not above and beyond. It's a solid spot to dine, just not jammed pack with memorable dishes. Sheradan was one of the most friendly waitresses we've ever had- she gave us excellent drink recommendations and even sang happy birthday! Absolute Fabulous Second Visit. Worth updating my review. We popped in for brunch on Saturday at 11. I had made a reservation just to make sure - but there were a handful of tables available. We were quickly seated and enjoyed our table in the sunlight. I love the interior style. The pendant lights are cool & I love the chalkboard wall in the back. Our waitress Kailea was perfect. Just the right amount of joking, friendliness and super attentive. I ordered the Brioche French Toast with Huckleberries. FREAKIN' YUM! I ordered my eggs scrambled & to be honest - the bacon was the star on the plate. Order the $8 fresh squeezed mimosa. Seriously. For the extra $1 it's worth it. Took my daughter and her friends to juniper during parents weekend at BSU. Think the kitchen must have been having a bad night, hope it was unusual. Reservations for 8pm, ordered at 8:15. Didn't get the appetizer (bread!) Until nearly 9, entrees arrived at 9:12. Our orders were all pasta, 15 cook time tops. The flavor was good. Pasta (several types) were all undercooked and chewy with large clumps in the linguini dishes. By that hour the place had lots of empty tables. Our server was mortified, kept our drinks full, was pleasant. Wait too long, food not stellar, service otherwise good. They didn't live up to their reputation so maybe was an off night for the.. Came here with a girl friend on a weekday evening and got seated right away. Our server was very sweet and knowledgeable of the menu. I ordered a burger with a gluten free bun (from a local GF bakery) that was DELICIOUS and a side of fries!! The lamb burger was fantastic and, believe it or not, the ketchup was to die for!! They make their own ketchup in house and you can taste the difference. It was SO good! You have to try it! read more

The sweet potato gnocchi was disappointing, tasteless and barely edible. The sweet potatoes didn't even taste like sweet potatoes, just a texture. The wine pours were very small, maybe 4 oz? Not a food review. Good craft cocktails. Mellow late night Tuesday chill when many other places already closed. They take their ice shapes very seriously. In one instance a single 3-inch cube and in another, hand crushed ice. Seriously, I watched him. Many in-house prepared syrups, house made grenadine and maraschino. Great martini says husband and perfect bartender. Friendly, frequent check-ins without intruding on our conversation and then responsive and informative when we made comments. I'm encouraged enough to want to come back when next I'm in town to try the food and other selections. read more

Juniper was fallback choice for Happy Hour when first choice was closed. (There's a First World Problem. No complaints.) Splendid serendipity to have been vectored here. The list of things enjoyed was almost as many as the years of wedded...umm...bliss being celebrated. Vibe, menu, foood, service, price point all get thumbs up. VIBE All people will feel welcome here from those in little black dress (as was our hostess) to the bartender's jeans and shirt. During our late afternoon into early evening (about 4:30 - 6:00) folks of all ages (from twenty to seventy somethings) and all attire (including shorts and tees) arrived to take tables in and out. Music mix was nicely eclectic to fit the space and tuned low enough in volume to be a thread in the tapestry of the vibe but not take over the experience or drown conversation. Nice! Two story interior was remodeled from a former restaurant for uber cool meets warmly inviting design. Exposed a wall of brick on one side as counter point are sleek black wood tables and chairs, unadorned for meal service but for white cloth napkins with black design. Look up to creative lighting options. Open only three weeks let's hope they keep this universal appeal going and don't devolve into "hipster central" because this is a location for people of all stripes who are lovers of great food and drink. Nolo timere, fellow Boomers! ;-) SEATING Some tables on front patio. About 14 high stools at the bar. Maybe 35 seats at standard height tables with banquette seating and chairs line the wall on main floor. More standard height seating up a flight of stairs. Seats 120 overall I am told. Plenty of space in the aisle way for service staff or guests on their way to and from tables or the loo. That owners avoided the "sardine can" in traffic flow here is "yahoo" worthy. So is that the bulk of seating is standard height tables and not obnoxious (IMHO) high perch tables. SERVICE Top notch for warm welcome, good attention and follow through. We were greeted promptly, given menus and had "the drill" explained when we asked questions. Our server knew the menu, could answer questions and also make recommendations. We felt well tended but not hovered over. LIBATIONS Specialty menu leans to gin cocktails, one of my favs, and then it dawned on me...duh...Juniper...what is a key ingredient in gin? Both gin mojito ($7.50) and Juni and the Jets ($8.00) a perfect summer sipper of muddled grapefruit, gin, St.Germaine, and prosecco were expertly crafted. Thoughtfully assembled by bottle and glass wine list and approachable prices. For big "woohoo" they had two sparklers by the glass and a third poured at brunch times. Coffee is Dawson Taylor ($2.50) served hot in white mugs. MENU & PRICES Food is fresh twists on classics along with new creations that leverage seasonal and local ingredients. That there are so many options that encourage small plate or shared plate dining is right up our alley. Chef Aaron Wermerskirchen clearly knows his stuff for creativity and execution. Prices ranging from $5 to $25 are a good value for this quality. FOOD We ordered a couple of things and both were excellent so we are eager to return. Fried root vegetables were crisp and seasoned just right and came with warm blue cheese dipper (@$6). Mussels and clams with chorizo and sweet red pepper (@$14) came in a broth so delicious and perfectly seasoned we asked for spoons to be sure we got every drop along with the three generous baguette or batard slices sent out with the dish. The only suggestion we'd make is for the kitchen to put grill marks on that bread to have it be an even better partner for the broth. The dessert menu is short, four or five options all presented in the same way in a mini mason jar. We shared rhubarb and strawberry with pistachio crumble that came with a scoop of fantastic cardamom ice cream (@$5). THIS N THAT 1) LOCATION: Downtown next to Matador. Parking can be a bear on street. 2) ACCESSIBILITY: Level in and throughout first floor. Many standard height tables. Ample floor space for path of travel. Upper level seating is by stairs only. 3) HOURS & HAPPY HOUR: Love that they are open straight through from about 11a to 2a, so if you like to dine for late afternoon "linner" you'll find them open. No Happy Hour here but since they are open straight through, there are lots of options on the lunch menu (until 5) or dinner menu (starting at 5) for that purpose. read more

Wow! We stepped in for Saturday brunch after walking the Farmer's Market. All of the staff were extremely nice and helpful. I'm a sucker for a fried chicken biscuit. There is a place in Portland that has the best and Juniper is the first place I've found that even comes close. The pork sausage gravy was tasty but the chicken was the star. Perfectly cooked and crunchy. I washed it down their habanero Bloody Mary which was delicious. I like my Bloody Mary's spicy and this fit the bill perfectly. First time here. Would have given 5 stars were it not for the hostess greeting me with attitude and condescension. That said, here is what we ordered and our feedback. Started with the steamed clams. Lovely flavor with some fun extras of bacon, olives and cherry tomatoes. A little heat in the sauce was a delightful surprise. I ordered the autumn salad and added chicken. A perfect ratio of spinach and arugula along with, in my opinion, the best salad toppings, pear, gorgonzola, candied pecans and a delicate wine vinaigrette. Perfect. My daughter had the sweet potato gnocchi. She said the kale that accompanied it was cooked perfect and the ratio of greens to pasta was good. She really enjoyed it. My husband had the seared salmon served with quinoa, kale and a squash/pistacchio sauce. Cooked perfect and great flavor combos. We finished up with the GF pumpkin cake with maple/fig sauce and a chai whipped cream. YUMMY! Highly recommend you try their tasty food if you have not. I am ashamed to say that after all these years, I only tried Juniper this past Sunday. I met a couple of friends for brunch. I am decidedly NOT a gin fan, however, I did try a gin that was really good and didn't leave me feeling like I had just licked a juniper bush. For food I chose the Duck Chilaquiles and it was so incredibly delicious that my tongue wanted to reach up and slap my brains out. It was a refreshing item to have a on a brunch menu. I don't tend to gravitate toward "breakfast" foods so brunch menus can often be difficult to navigate. The duck chilaquiles was flavorful and just right for a warm day. It didn't seem heavy though the portion was generous and enough to fill me up. The absolute highlight of my visit was trying a cocktail called "Saved By The Shell." Not only does the name conjure up my crush on Mr. Belding, it is my new favorite cocktail in Boise. A gin and pistachio mix, it is a dreamy drink that captures the decadent pleasure of a pistachio French macaron. It is flavorful and divine. I am glad I finally came in. read more

Third time here but first review, wanted to average the visits out but every time it has been fantastic. Moscow mule was made with house made ginger beer, love the slight ginger burn as it goes down. Had pickles and olives, pickles being cured in-house. I love the attention to everything being made fresh with a local emphasis, down to the proletariat wine. Upon arrival, it appeared we probably didn't need the reservation. There were a number of open tables. Overall it was a decent experience but the service could have been more attentive. The food wasn't terrible but I don't feel it was worth the prices they are charging. I might give it one more try just to see if this is normal. If it is, I can get a better steak and better service elsewhere for less. read more

The food is not good. I don't know how else to say it nicely. Probably the worst tasting pizza I've ever had and the Caesar salad had huge clumps of lettuce core in it. Secondly, the waitstaff seems to only be attentive to large groups. Which I get, but we're paying for food and service too as a group of 4. No one ever came back to check on us, we were never offered drink refills, the food took almost an hour to come out and it is beyond LOUD in the restaurant. Good brunch place but wasn't amazing for me. I ordered the chicken in a biscuit, side of potatoes and a mimosa. Potatoes were a hit - (can't beat Idaho's potatoes) and the mimosa was how it should be: mostly champagne, so I was happy with that! Now for the grand entree - I really wanted to love it. The sauce they have the sandwich sitting on was good, kind of reminded me of stroganoff (or maybe that's what it was), biscuit was buttered but cold and did not taste freshly baked. Juniper sports a fun and vibrant atmosphere and takes their service seriously. Our bartender, Jake, delivered fantastic service and concocted fantastic cocktails. We were impressed by the concept containing an abundance of locally sourced goods presented in a refined fashion. I had a braised buffalo dish with gravy, potatoes and veggies. The veggies were crisp and the potatoes probably riced (super smooth no chunks). The shank was so juicy it melted in my mouth and didn't require a knife at all. I was impressed at how well the gravy paired with the buffalo. I typically don't like gravy slathered over everything because then it all starts to taste the same, so I ordered it on the side. It came out piping hot and on a cool plate (didn't sit in the window for long). My sweetheart had the blackened trout and said it was terrific. I didn't try it because I'm not a huge fan of blackened seasoning since the bitterness lingers too long for me, but her plate was presented well. I stole the pictures off the web because I don't like being that guy, but chose pictures that I felt represented my experience. By far one of my favorite places to eat in Boise. The staff is always attentive and knowledgeable on the menu (great for the wifes dietary restrictions) and they have killer cocktail menu to tie it all together. I can never fault a place for being busy on a Friday/Saturday night and our food taking a little longer than usual...it's the name of the game people! Luckily our server Kevin came over and kept us informed on how things were going in the kitchen so we never felt in the dark. I ordered the beef tenderloin special they had going on that night and my wife ordered the skirt steak tacos and we were more than satisfied when they arrived to the table. You know it's a solid dish when the people at the next table over ask what you ordered so they can get the same thing! Visit after visit my family and I love Juniper, it's a local restaurant serving quality food with local ingredients.
