I had the opportunity to dine at Saltbrush for a business dinner recently. I had heard the pork chop was amazing and as a midwestern girl, I was excited to try it. Spoiler alert--It is all that! Our server shared that it is a mainstay on the menu and how it is presented changes with the season. For our visit it was served with a rice salad. TBH, I would have licked the plate if I could. Also, I wish I could have finished every thing and picked at the bone. OMG Amazing. The restaurant itself is beautiful. Great build out, quiet--great place to have good dinner conversation. Service was outstanding. Wine list was solid. My only regret is that I wish I would have gone with a larger party so we could split dishes and try more. I can't wait to go back. read more

The ambience is fun. Waitstaff was attentive but not over our shoulders the entire time. The food...... I could go either way. It wasn't bad but for the pricing, I wasn't wowed either. Here's some food review: The steak tartar lacked salt. But the flavor and quality of the beef was good. The duck fat potato didn't come with the trout caviar on top. It was crispy on the outside. Mush on the inside. The sauce lacked salt and needed more of a flavor punch. The curry snapper needed more curry taste but the dish was cooked very well. The duck confit was just okay in my opinion. Again, lacked salt again. The duck was fall of the bone tender but was placed on top of a miclx of mushy lentils and salad, not my jam. The ribeye was cooked well but in my opinion, a steak shouldn't be presented already cut. Would I go again? Yes. I'd take a date for a few cocktail and a nice meal. But did it wow me? Service wise. Had dinner here for a work event. The appetizers were good- the hash brown potato situation in duck fat- but it's tough to mess up fried potatoes in lard. The main course was sub-par. The rice that accompanied tasted like boxed rice-a-roni mix. The veggies were just oddly presented/ almost raw and barely seasoned. If I had to pay to come to dinner here it would be even more frustrating. However the ambiance was nice and so were the cocktails. read more

We stopped by Saltbrush for happy hour cocktails and appetizers. You can tell a lot about a restaurant by the feel of its bar, and Saltbrush delivers--comfortable seating and a great view into its classic Art Deco-style bar create an inviting atmosphere. We took advantage of the two-for-one Old Fashioneds and shared a kebab with a uniquely smoky flavor and incredibly tender texture. We already had dinner plans elsewhere, but Saltbrush is definitely on our list for the full dining experience soon. read more

For a seamless experience, stay away from the verbal special menu. It seems to be experimental apps only served at the bar. We liked every special, except the spotted prawn skewer, which was double the price of the chicken or beef skewers, at maybe 1/6 of the size. They sold us on one of each of the skewers, but of course we didn't know the price until we paid at the end. However, Saltbrush really hits the spot on the permanent staples on its menu. It seems to be updated regularly because the online menu didn't match with what we saw in person. The carrots were slightly sweet and not overcooked, the Alaskan Black Cod was FALL APART FLAKY, and the duck fat potato was literally my singular favorite dish. Alright, quick confession. My wife and I first tried to get a table at Tavolata next door and could not get in on a Friday night, no surprise there. So we decided to try our luck at Saltbrush, a place we had not tried before. I am very glad we did, because we landed in a great spot. We grabbed seats at the bar and the service was very good, even on a busy weekend evening. The inside of Saltbrush feels well designed, chic but not pretentious, and comfortable for a date night. Right away I was introduced to a new Walla Walla wine I had never heard of, and it completely took me by surprise in a good way. The wild sockeye salmon and the wild Thai snapper were both very well executed dishes and showed a lot of care from the kitchen. We will absolutely come back again for an adult date night. Saltbrush turned out to be a happy find and a place worth returning to. read more

What a beautiful restaurant. warm and inviting but not overly pretentious. Bartender was knowledgeable and created cocktails to suit our tastes. Had an order of roasted carrots with whipped ricotta and drizzled in honey. I did find the carrots a bit to hard to bite through. Would have rather they softer bite, The flavors were amazing. First, I want to say that this restaurant is absolutely stunning! It's dripping with ambiance, soft light, and is perfect for celebrating something romantic, like an anniversary. Expect higher prices for the food that has been made with love, attention to detail, and exotic flavors. The service was accommodating, helpful, and very friendly. I loved our server. He was pleasant and checked on us regularly, and kept our drinks coming. Their menu is relatively small, but they have a few plant-based items, breads, apps, wine, and your mains. We immediately started with the Sourdough bread with cultured butter, which was so delicious that we regretted getting it because we ate too much of it and couldn't quite finish our dinners. On top of that, we also ordered the Duckfat Potato as a small appetizer, and my husband really liked it, but for me, it just felt like a fancy tater tot, lol. I'm not big into fried foods, so I wouldn't order it again, especially since they have a few other yummy appetizers on the menu. My husband ordered the Broiled NY Steak, which he thoroughly enjoyed, but couldn't finished, since it was 14 oz.! He was happy to take it home and eat the rest as part of breakfast. :) It was rich, with deep flavors, and incredibly satisfying. I, on the other hand, ordered the Roasted 1/2 chicken, which was definitely too much food for me, but it was very decadent. The risotto was out of this world....just a subtle and beautiful herbal flavor that I couldn't stop eating. I would highly recommend it. Our server continued with the hospitality and even offered a chef-created off menu vegan dish for my friend. We ended up not getting a bottle, but looking over the wine list, we had a Somm come offer assistance in a friendly, approachable way--not overbearing or pretentious. My husband and I went to Salrbrush for the 1st time for their NYE pre-fixe menu. The food did not disappoint (although we were told all the items with the exception of the sourdough bread are not on the main menu). Starter course of Dungeness crab salad with a salty sweet crouton in top was unique blend of flavor, followed by nicely baked halibut and greens with a nice subtle flavor of caramel and nut marmalade on top. Then they brought out a small dish of ravioli with a complimentary light sauce that you wanted to use the remaining sourdough bread to capture on your palette. Finally, a beautifully cooked filet mignon that melted in your mouth with each bite. House made macaroons were the dessert served but since we are both not really dessert lovers, the dinner itself was the most pleasing. read more

Want to visit France, Italy, Alaska and Thailand in one evening? Check out Saltbrush. I rarely write this much about a restaurant but I feel that recognition is deserved. Rarely do I go to the same restaurant 2 nights in a row but there was just too many dishes on the menu that I hade to try. The first night I tried the Pork Cabbage Rolls, Himachi Crudo and the Mibrasa Roasted Half Chicken. Oh, and the Oak smoked Alaskan wild shrimp on homemade toasted brioche points. I asked the restaurant co-owner what a Mibrasa was (I thought it was a spice). A Mibrasa is a charcoal oven. They use the oven to cook the chicken and steak over medium smokey oak. The second night, I visited with my family and friends for more. I had the Duckfat potato, Heirloom Tomatoes/Pork Belly and the Alaskan Wild King Salmon. Both dinners were started with their homemade sourdough which was amazing. I sat and looked around at the restaurant. It was abuzz with quiet laughter, softly lit ambient lighting and delicious foods. Expect a visit at your table by either the sommelier or one of the owners (or both). I travel the world for work and have had the privilege of eating in some amazing restaurants ( and my waistline shows it ). Greeters, server, manager were so welcoming and polite to us. Mr.Bartender... not sure who you think you are being so rude when 3 ladies walked up to the bar to ask for shots on the way to the bathroom. No we weren't rowdy nor were we rude to you. We just walked up trying to give you business. We were with a bigger group and only 3 of us wanted shots so we came to the bar top. As a former bartender who also managed a very busy bar and restaurant I'd never talk down to customers the way you did and make them feel judged. Please correct your attitude and perhaps you'd get more business. You can still have your aesthetic and vibe that you're trying to create and still be kind. Saltbrush was an okay experience overall. The ambience was one of the better parts of the night. Not too loud, and not too quiet. The waitress, Kayla, made sure we were enjoying our meal at proper timings and informed us of any changes to the menu. The service was excellent overall by her and the manager for complimenting dessert for us. That being said I did have one issue. I have had plenty of pre-cut steaks in my life, but this is probably the first time a pre-cut steak hasn't come out of the kitchen at the correct cook. I don't particularly have an issue with a raw steak, but someone else who cannot eat raw foods may end up having a problem. This did not ruin my night, but I was a bit disappointed when I raised the issue and the chef's response was he would have been happy to fix it if I'm not satisfied with it (without any sort of apology). There's honestly not really an excuse to it coming out raw (bloody in the middle portion) when it's already cut open... especially after waiting close to 40 minutes for it. That being said, the steak itself was seasoned decently, but the potato mash was the highlight of that dish. Disclaimer for after, my partner ended up throwing up the minute she got home. She believes it was caused by the Hamachi crudo or Mibrasa roasted half chicken. read more

This was the second time my husband and I dined at Saltbush because we were so impressed with it the first time. Not so much the second time. Appetizers were great; waiter was attentive and asked how everything was. We ordered the 8-ounce tenderloin to split, medium rare. The restaurant was somewhat busy, but it took over 45 minutes to get our order, with no sign of our waiter during that time. Our steak finally arrived, and it was far too blue, rather than medium rare. Our waiter never returned to ask how the meal was, nor did he inquire when he cleaned the table and over 1/2 of the steak was still on the plate. Saltbrush is my favorite restaurant in Boise. The owner Neil Grant imbues his passion in every bite, successfully remastering the South African flavors of his homeland, making you feel right at home while sending your palate halfway across the world. That's my long winded way of saying the dishes are new and exciting yet familiar in their warmth and accessibility. I had the pleasure of touring his wine collection where I got to know, not only the dynamic spectrum of South African wines, but Neil's effervescent personality and kindness. He's a great guy. He cares about his customers. If you are in Boise, you MUST go to Saltbrush. Another sign that this restaurant will soon be considered one of the best in Boise is in the staff. They are just as passionate as the owner. Friendly faces, quick drink service and astute recommendations. We had a friend from Nova Scotia who is not the easiest Vegan to accommodate dine with us and Neil Grant found a way to make even him happy. Trust me when I say, that's a miracle! Haha. In all seriousness, I get a little tender-hearted when I dine in an establishment like Saltbrush. It's what elevated cuisine is all about. And let's not forget, the prices were more than fair. The service was good, not great. Food was an acquired taste. we ordered lots of things, more than usual. we had the Homemade Sourdough Boule which was very good (would recommend). House Cured Meats & Pate this was ok, the meats were good, the cheese was good, the stone ground mustard was really good maybe had some horseradish in it, the Pate was not that great followed by the salmon also not great. The Saltbrush Salad was not to our liking, the vinaigrette was not great, part of my gripe was the beats, I don't usually eat them and they gave the salad more beat flavor than expected. The New York strip was flavorful, compared to other places I have had here in the treasure valley it was memorable but there are, for me at least better out there. The double pork chops were great and the mashed potatoes were also great. We also had the roasted vegetables, not a stand out dish, was seasoned well just an acquired taste. Finally the Buttered noodles for one of the kiddos was good. Not to the fault of the restaurant the fire alarm in the building went off shorty after we got seated. it took about 15 mins for the Boise FD to clear the building, no word on the actual cause, it was assumed that an apartment upstairs in the building was cooking and set it off accidently. Lucky for us it was not raining or snowing that day. Also better safe than sorry and again, not holding it against them. although I am curious to know how often that happens. read more

When you go to a nice dinner, you expect good food and good service. The food was ok and the service was ok. So for the price, very disappointing. My friends wanted to take me to a nice dinner for my 30th birthday, and it does feel like we were judged immediately for not being a high-roller table. Big fan of the drinks- I ordered a side car and I can't remember the last time I had one that was prepared so well. My husband ordered the red snapper entree and it was delicious. Visited Boise for a day with a friend and stopped in for a bite and a couple of drinks. Best drink of my life hands down! Tried the Honeysuckle drink and was left in awe woth the flowery notes and smoothness of the liqueurs. The bartender lead, Staci, was on point with reaching perfection of proportions, execution, and taste Had the roasted squash arancini and that was the best paired appetizer to go with my drink. Stopped in here on a whim during a weekday and had a really nice time. The space is very pretty and modern, seems casual but upscale. Maybe because of how open the space is, it can get overwhelming loud with all the tables talking - to the point it was hard to hear each other at the table and the wait staff. But we interacted with quite a few staff members and all of them were very friendly. This is a tapas kind of place and you'll need several dishes each person to be filled up, even if you order the bigger plate options.. but each dish was super tasty and unique. On the pricier side as tapas places tend to be, but they seem to have a lot of fun with the food and ingredients and it was a great experience. read more

Went recently for dinner to celebrate our wedding anniversary and were very pleased. At first, we were initially surprised and disappointed -- the table they were about to seat us at was close to the entry/front door and way too out in the open. However, the owner (manager?) went out of his way to make things right and got us a nice table in the "wine cellar" part of the dining room, in front of the kitchen. It wan't too loud there (surprisingly) and, frankly, kind of "neat." The server (Sara, I think) was excellent -- nice/kind, well-informed as to the menu (including the drinks), and attentive. The food was excellent-- Mibrasa flat bread, the squash appetizer, the chicken entree, and the pork chop entree -- all delicious and perfectly cooked. In sum, a great evening and dining experience. We regretfully had a poor experience and will not return. While the greeters and the server were very nice, the food was marginal. We both had the Thai curry with snapper, potatoes and cauliflower. The large strip of snapper was presented with the skin on, unnecessary and visually unpleasant. The potatoes were only partly cooked in the curry sauce, and had an unpleasant crunchy, raw feel. How hard is it to know if your potatoes are done? You stick in a fork and taste one in the kitchen. The cauliflower had a much longer time in the Cuisinart than ever needed, and were unrecognizable. The decor is like one walked into the masonry center and said, "I'll take one of each!" There was a dizzying array of colors, surfaces, stains, and themes. The ceiling was like a Southern plantation with white wood and caning. The bar was dark wood. The walls alternated between dark wood, concrete, and a very creepy stark white subway tile with a large, dark burgundy stripe running horizontally in the middle. Were we in a morgue?
